Single  simple  discussion – is  the  one  that  has  only  one  discussion   that  is  introduced  by  the  teacher  for  brief  discussions.

Best  practice: for  short  focused  discussions.

Each  person  posts  one  discussion – each  person  can  start  one  discussion  but  is  allowed  to  reply  to  all  discussions.  This  one  could  have  a  great  fit  for  student’s  course  reflections.

Best  practice: to  start  a  discussion  about  students’  reflections  on  weekly  course  topic.

Standard  forum  displayed  in  a  blog  like  format  – discussions  are  displayed  as  in  a  blog.  Participants  can  see  it  and  add  a  discussion  or  reply  to  an  existing  discussion.  You  can  monitor  or  guide   those  discussions   the  way  you  like  it  based  on  your  pedagogical  approach.  

Best  practice: for  large  discussions   that  you  intend  to  monitor/guide   or  for  social  forums   that  are  student  led.

Q  and  A  forum  – teacher  poses  a  question   for  students  to  answer.  Students  can  add  more  questions  and  reply  to  other  posts.  They  have  to  post  once  to  see  others  replies.

Best  practice: when  you  have  a  particular  question   that  you  wish  to  have  answered.

News  forum  – it  is  a  special  type  forum  that  is  automatically  created  with  a  new  course  and  all  participants  are  subscribed.  It  is  done  only  by  the  teacher  to  present  or  remind  important  details  such  as  deadlines,  exams,  reviews,  takeaways  from  a  course.  

Best  practice: for  general  announcements   such  as  exam  dates,  times  or  changes  to  exams,  lectures  or  seminars,  as  well  as  important   information  about  course  work  throughout   a  term  or  special  announcements   relating  to  events.

Subscription  hints

• Force  subscription   is  good   to  use  only  on  forums  where  you  are  the  only  one  posting   (e.g.  News  forum),   because  you  monitor   the  amount  of  email  for  your  students.  Auto  subscription   allowing  them  to  opt  out  when  they're  ready.

• Students  can  choose  not  to  be  notified  or  to  have  all  email  sent  once  a  day  in  a  digest  contain  either  all  posts  or  simply  the  subject  headings  Dashboard>Preferences>User  account>Forum  preferences.  

• Check  who  is  or  is  not   subscribed   to  a  forum  and  or  remove  from  the  subscribers   list  by  going   to  Administration>Forum  administration>Show/Edit  current  subscribers.
