Alderman Khalif J. Rainey is leading an effort toincrease viewer accessibility to programming on theCity Channel.
The City Channel provides live and replay telecastsof Common Council and Council Committee meetings,as well as gavel-to-gavel coverage of other city boardsand commissions, special city events and other infor-mational programming. Currently, live City Channelprogramming is available for free through the city’slive-streaming website, and to cable subscribers withSpectrum and AT&T U-Verse.
Rainey is working with the Office of the City Clerk
to explore possibly making the City Channel availablevia analog over-the-air signal to allow thousands ofadditional viewers to access the channel’s vital pro-gramming.
“With the current U-Verse problem (the CityChannel is currently unavailable for all AT&T U-Versecustomers while a critical piece of encoding equip-ment is repaired) it really highlights how access toCity Channel programming is limited, especially forpeople who don’t have the means to buy cable andInternet service,” Rainey said.
“The size of a citizen’s wallet should not deter-
mine their level of access to City Channel program-ming and that is what I am hoping to change by look-ing into the possibility of access via over-the-air sig-nal,” he said.
City Clerk Jim Owczarski said he is working on abroader plan to expand the outreach capability of theCity Channel to allow for greater accessibility on var-ious platforms. “The (over-the-air) request fromRainey will now be included in that plan, which Iexpect to be presented to the Steering and RulesCommittee this fall,” he said.
