Reed was selected with the 11th overall pick, the first pick in the second round, by the Mir- acles, a team based in Moncton, New Brunswick, a city in far eastern Canada. Reed scored 1,099 points during his four-year career at Mount Olive. The 6-6 forward from Garner, North Carolina averaged a career-best 13.1 points per game in his senior season while being named the 2015-16 Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the Year. “To me, it feels sort of dream- like,” said Reed. “I grew up hearing how rare it was to play pro basketball so to get this chance is an amazing feeling. I’m ecstatic to have the oppor- tunity to play for a pro team.” Reed goes pro in Canada Women’s Basketball Opens Conference Play With 64-57 Victory The University of Mount Ol- ive women’s basketball team (2-2. 1-0 CC) earned a road victory over Emmanuel Col- lege (1-3, 0-1 CC), 64-57, last Tuesday evening to open Con- ference Carolinas play. A back-and-forth first ten minutes saw just two ties, but seven lead changes. The Tro- jans took a 14-12 lead after a three by junior Felecity Ha- vens, but the Lions quickly re- sponded with a 7-0 run to end the quarter and take a 19-14 lead. A free-throw by senior Kiara Jones snapped a 4:30 scoreless streak for UMO and cut the Emmanuel lead to 19-15 in the second quarter. Freshman Kel- ly Funderburk drained a triple that sparked a 10-4 run for the Trojans to end the quarter as UMO held a 32-30 advantage at the break. Emmanuel stormed back to take a 38-36 lead just shy of the midway point of the third period. Answering right back, Jones and junior Ni’Ya Styles hit buckets to put UMO ahead 40-38, a lead the Trojans never relinquished. Quick out of the gate, UMO took an 8-0 lead that forced a timeout by Emmanuel just three minutes into the game. The Lions clawed back into the contest, cutting the Trojans’ lead to five at 20-15. Emmanuel finished the first 30 minutes on a 9-0 run that gave the Lions a 35-34 lead at the half. The Trojans and Lions trad- ed buckets through the first three minutes of the second period before Emmanuel ran out to a 50-43 lead at the first media timeout. Trying to chip away at the deficit, Mount Ol- ive continued to battle, but the Trojans drew no closer than six. Leading the Trojans was freshman Armond Griebe with 17 points and eight rebounds. Former University of Mount Olive Men’s Basketball forward Dominique Reed will play pro-fessionally in Canada after being drafted by the Moncton Miracles of the National Bas-ketball League of Canada on Sunday.

The University of Mount Ol-ive women’s basketball team (2-2. 1-0 CC) earned a road victory over Emmanuel Col-lege (1-3, 0-1 CC), 64-57, last Tuesday evening to open Con-ference Carolinas play.

DONATION - Members of the Men of FIC are shown presenting a donation of $250 to Eldress Lula Newkirk in support of Helping Hands Ministries. Eldress Newkirk is involved in many services to help the citizens of this community. She gives out food through the year and the Men of FIC try to assist her; however, additional help is need-ed as she gives out around 200 boxes at Christmas filled with tur-keys, hams and all the trimmings.
