Dear WA&A Area members,
As we approach the end of the year 2014-2015 term, I would like to
express my sincere appreciation to the outgoing sections officers for
supporting NACE International to achieve its main objective of
protecting people, assets and the environment from corrosion. Their
contribution has been clearly demonstrated through the number and
the quality of technical events held through the area including UAE
Corrosion Conference, Jubail Corrosion Day, and periodic technical
dinner meetings.
At the same time, I would like to congratulate the new officers and
wish them a successful year. The area officers will continue working
in partnership with the new section officers toward achieving the
strategic goals of NACE International.
At the end, I would like to welcome Lagos, Nigeria, the newest
section in NACE West Asia and Africa Area.

Communication is the most essential key to achieve success in all
organizations. On the other hand, effective communication directs
the organization’s path towards achieving excellence.
As NACE West Asia & Africa Area serves 11 sections in 8 countries,
it is important to establish communication between sections, and
this newsletter is a very good tool to make the communication
effective. This is a perfect way to make our sections be aware of all
the events happening in other sections in the area.
We encourage you, our members, to participate in the leadership
role in our sections. We’ll never know, one of the readers of this
newsletter may be one of the future leaders of NACE International.
Your active participation opens the door of opportunities to explore
new knowledge and concepts that will surely help our organization
to grow, our area to develop, our sections to be nourished, and
ourselves to improve as a professional.
Congratulations to the very first newsletter of NACE West Asia & Africa Area and congratulations to
all of us for a job well-done on the first half of 2015!

NACE International Arabic Website Successfully Inaugurated
The Arabic version of the NACE
website has been successfully
inaugurated during the Board of
Trustees meeting last 17 March 2015
during Corrosion 2015 Conference. It
is a breakthrough for the Area as their
own language is used for the website.
Abdullah Al-Ghamdi, Area Director of
NACE West Asia and Africa Area, has
led the virtual ribbon cutting
ceremony to officially open the NACE
Arabic website which was attended
by Area Sections Leaders as well as
NACE International Staff.
After months of hard work and review,
with the great help from the NACE
Headquarters, NACE West Asia and
Africa Area has finally launched the
NACE website in Arabic language.
NACE International is a very diverse
organization organized in different
sections of the world, serving 116
countries that speak different
languages. On the other hand, NACE
West Asia and Africa Area covers 11
sections in 8 countries, namely Egypt,
Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar,
Saudi Arabia and United Arab
Emirates. Most of these countries are
Arabic-speaking countries. Thus,
NACE Arabic version of the website is
perfect to give the members a better
feel of NACE International. Through
this, information dissemination and
understanding will be easier.
The content management of the
website is managed by the Area, and

D r. Abdulhameed Al-Hashem
is currently the NACE Kuwait
Section Trustee and West
Asia & Africa Area Technical
Coordination Committee (TCC)
Liaison. Dr. Al-Hashem is a principal
Research Scientist at the Petroleum
Research & Studies Center of Kuwait
Institute for Scientific Research
(KISR). He was the Director of the
Petroleum Research Center of KISR
from 2006 until 2013.
Dr. Abdulhameed Al-Hashem has a
bachelor’s degree in Chemical
Engineering from Wayne State
University, Detroit, MI, USA. He has a
master’s degree of Chemical
Engineering from the same
university. Lastly, he obtained his
PhD in Materials Science and
Engineering from Lehigh University,
Bethlehem, PA, USA.
Dr. Al-Hashem was involved in the
areas of coatings evaluation
through the use of EIS, oilfield
chemicals screening, corrosion
economics, and monitoring as well
as the cavitation corrosion behavior
of industrial alloys and fiber-
reinforced plastics for the oil industry
in Kuwait and the Gulf region.
His research expertise is in materials
selection, oil field chemical
screening and evaluation, corrosion
monitoring, coatings and paints
evaluation, cavitation and erosion
corrosion, and corrosion economics.
Why Technical Field?
Well, I thought it was appropriate to
get a degree in Chemical
Engineering to be able to serve your
country. As you can see, all the
GCC countries are in oil and gas
so it’s best to select something that
you can serve your country. So it’s
(a) you can serve your country,
and (b) you’ll be able to get a job
easily and this is where high salaries
are [laughs].
Outside the technical field, what
else do you do?
I used to do sports before (soccer
and pingpong). Now, it’s only
exercising indoor and outdoor.
During summer times, I like to go
hiking and in resort areas. Because
we have a farm, we go canoeing
and going to places where you
can’t see cars, only bicycles and
horses. That comes to
entertainment. I also like to go to
historical places to look at other
civilizations, whether it is for
example Japanese, Chinese,
European especially old cities. I like
to go to these to learn other
civilizations, but of course only if
time allows me to do so [laughs].
How did you find out about NACE?
When I was specializing in Materials
Science, I learn from one of my
advisers or teachers that there is
an organization called NACE and
they are specifically focusing in the
area of corrosion, and if you
become a member, you will have
the chance to attend conferences,
meetings and discussions that will
give you practical or some
perspective about your field. I
became a member in 1983. It’s
more than 30 years now.
How did you become an Officer?
I was highly encouraged by one of
the NACE Presidents, Dr. Iba Al-Adel.
He pushed me very hard to establish
a chapter in Kuwait. He tried telling
me since 1996, ‘please go ahead
and establish a section in Kuwait’. I
told him we do not have 10 people.
So we were telling our colleagues
that we’ll pay for you and become
a member so that we can have 10
people to establish a section here in
Kuwait. So when the section was
created, I was the section chairman.
And now, how many members do
you have? I think it’s 240–260.
How did you become the TCC
Liaison?
One, with the support of my
colleagues in the region, Mr.
Abdullah Al Ghamdi, Dr. Gasem
Fallatah and some NACE members
and past NACE presidents, they are
saying that ‘we need somebody
who has some technical
background who will be a
champion to take this and really
push for it or market it. I was a
Director before in my company for 7
years and I have many
responsibilities. But when I was no
longer with the management, I
might have a little more time. I
accepted it because I think it’s one
way to serve the region.
