Feasting with Francis and Italian Heritage Parade

Group photo of the friars with the push float

View from the “Feasting with Francis” dining tables

Br. Niko and Fr. John turn the corner on Columbus Ave.

The afternoon of October 7 provided spectacular weather and the Shrine a fantastic vantage point to view the passing floats, marching bands and formations of our service men and women. What a wonderful occasion to tie together the Feast of St. Francis, Fleet Week and the celebration of the Italian roots of our North Beach neighborhood. We thank those supporters who purchased seats for our al fresco dining event. Mona Lisa Restaurant and our team of volunteers especially receive our heartfelt gratitude for the food, time and effort that will establish this as a tradition in the years to come. May God bless you in your generosity! Pace et bene

Mission Statement As Capuchin Franciscans we follow St. Francis of Assisi as brothers, living the Gospel in prayer, fraternity and ministry, witnessing simply to Jesus Christ and the Church as a joyful presence of hope and salvation to all, especially to those most in need.

Guiding Principles

PRAYER - Rooted in our Capuchin contemplative

tradition and expressed in many forms

As followers of St. Francis, desiring to be conformed more perfectly to the crucified and risen Christ

We affirm that our prayer is rooted in our Capuchin contemplative tradition and is expressed in many forms.

We seek to witness both personally and communally to affective prayer.

We seek to become a living prayer and joyful presence to draw others to Christ.

FRATERNITY - Rooted in mutual love, humble reverence and respect for one another and for all people

We Capuchins are friars minor, rooted in mutual love, humble reverence and respect for one another and for all people.

Individually and communally, we commit ourselves to be in greater solidarity with the poor.

We manifest a compassionate caring attitude toward one another as brothers.

We affirm, animate, support and encourage the building of community.

MINORITY - Following the meek and humble Christ and sharing our joy as lesser brothers by walking with people of every social condition

As brothers of St. Francis, we faithfully follow the meek and humble Christ.

We cultivate a disposition of humility and respect of the dignity of others.

We share our joy as lesser brothers by walking with people of every social condition and by being instruments of reconciliation.

We commit ourselves to the evaluation of our lifestyle, both individually and communally.

Reflections on the Wisdom from St. Francis

by Fr. Bobby

Even if you were so skillful and wise that you possessed all knowledge, knew how to interpret every kind of language, and scrutinize heavenly matters with skill: you could not boast in these things. (Admonition 5)

Sometimes St. Francis is portrayed as anti-

intellectual, abhorring books and book learning.

This, of course, is far from the truth. Francis loved

and honored “all theologians and those who

minister the word of God to us.” What Francis was

wary of was the temptation learning presented: the

temptation to feel better than others, to bask in the

glory of ‘knowing things.’ In this sense, learning was

like money: a useful tool, but too often valued for its

own sake. Books are important: is not the very bible

a collection of books, the word of God. But books

can become idols if we don’t remember that all

knowledge comes from God, that human words are

of value as they are inspired by the Word of God,

Jesus Christ. May the Lord bless and keep you

always!

Fr. Robert Barbato, OFM Cap. is the pastor of Old Mission Santa Inés in Solvang, CA.

ASSISI PARDON

PORZIUNCULA PARDON is always available under the conditions the Catholic Church has stipulated.

The conditions for receiving the Porziuncula Pardon are: To receive the Porziuncula Indulgence, one must receive sacramental absolution and receive Holy Communion at Mass. Additionally, one must visit a church where one prays at least the Creed and an Our Father for the intentions of the Pope. Additionally, one must be completely free of any attachment to sin; if this condition is not met, the indulgence is partial rather then plenary. At the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, the Pardon of Assisi may be received on October 4th, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (in the Shrine Church); on any two days of one’s own choosing during the year (one day in the Church and one day in the Porziuncula Nuova); and as often as one makes a formal pilgrimage as part of a group to the Shrine Church or to the Porziuncula Nuova. (One may receive a plenary indulgence only once a day and it may be applied to oneself or to the soul of one of the faithfully departed.)

News and Events

LISTENING SESSIONS WITH ARCHBISHOP

In his letter of September 21 to the people of the Archdiocese, Archbishop Cordileone invites us to come together to share our thoughts, speak our needs, and offer our prayers. As his letter says, in part:

"During this time of rightful righteous indignation among our people, it is more important than ever that we, your leaders, listen to you. Therefore, I have scheduled five opportunities for people in our Archdiocese to meet with me and speak to me directly.” (The schedule is as follows):

Wednesday, October 17, 7:00 p.m.

St. Mary’s Cathedral, San Francisco

Thursday, October 18, 5:00 p.m.

St. Stephen, San Francisco

Sunday, October 28, 6:00 p.m.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, Belmont

"We will begin these sessions by praying together the Church’s Liturgy of the Hours for the Evening Hour, Vespers. After that, those present will be able to ask questions and make comments. While I cannot claim to have all of the answers to the trials the Church is suffering at this time, I pledge to do my best to listen and respond. After these meetings with you, and further consultations with our Archdiocesan Independent Review Board and my Cabinet, I will determine what further steps will be necessary to help bring about the desperately needed purification of our Church."
