Liston College’s Special Character Statement
This is what the Lord asks of you
“Act justly, love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God” Micah 6:8
Dear Parents and Caregivers Special Character Review:
This week Sr. Sian Owen has been conducting a Special Character Review on behalf of Bishop Patrick Dunn. She has been meeting with students and staff as well as some parents. The students who have met with her have been particularly enthusiastic! When we receive the report, I will give you feedback from the Review.
Recent Tragic Death of Kelston Boys’ High School Student:
The College has sent messages of sympathy and support to the KBHS Principal and staff and we included the school and Stephen Dudley’s family in our prayers.
I addressed both the Senior and Junior assemblies about the tragic death of Stephen Dudley and pointed out how avoidable it was. The key points I made were that there are always other options besides fighting to resolve differences and that if such a situation does arise then those nearby must do something to stop it. Fortunately, we have very few situations where our students resort to fighting to deal with disagreements. I believe our Restorative Justice approach has had a significant effect on making students more aware of their actions and the impact of these actions on others.
Monday Mass at Lunchtime:
Each Monday at 1.10pm, Fr. Kevin Murphy our Chaplain celebrates mass in the College Chapel and students attend on a voluntary basis. Each week we have a full chapel with both students and staff – and on occasion some parents. You are most welcome to join us on Mondays – just call in!
Reporting:
The mid-year reports are currently being prepared and will be posted home at the end of next week. The times for Parent-Teacher interviews will be on Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th July. Please refer to the College website for further details.
When you receive the mid-year report I would appreciate any comments you may have which could help us to improve the effectiveness of our reporting of student progress to you. The easiest way would be to email my P.A., Deirdre Auger, and she will forward your comments to me. ([email protected])
Community Consultation:
We had a Hui recently with a good representation of parents. The purpose of the meeting was to find out from parents how we could help our Maori students to achieve as Maori. One issue which was raised at the Hui was the introduction of Te Reo Maori into the curriculum. The Board and the Senior Leadership Team will be investigating ways of making this happen.
God bless you and your families.

The Liston College Fitness Centre is now complete. This will be used as a teaching resource for senior NCEA Physical Education. This will serve as a tool for students to learn functional anatomy and biomechanical movements.
Secondly it will be used as a space for our sports coaches to develop strength and conditioning programmes for their teams. It will also be available for senior students to use before and after school for their personal training.
We would like thank the Waitakere Licencing Trust for funding the building, the PTFA for their contribution towards the new equipment, and Stephen Hopkins for coordinating the project.

UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
Introduction of Academic English language requirement From 2016 the University of Auckland will introduce a new entrance requirement for domestic students. It is called the Academic English Language Requirement and its aim is to ensure that all students are in possession of a basic level of functional competence in academic English so all have the opportunity to flourish in the University environment and in the graduate employment market. Results of the University’s diagnostic tests, student demand for language support, the experience of teaching staff and the performance at University of students with restricted exposure to academic English in their high school programmes (measured by GPA and pass rates) suggest the current UE literacy requirements are not sufficient to ensure that all students admitted to the University have adequate skill levels in academic English, particularly in formal writing. These shortcomings impede students’ achievement both in their University studies and on gradua-tion – ongoing weaknesses in academic writing in particular compromise graduates in the employment market as good written communication skills are widely regarded as key to meeting employers’ expectations. The University of Auckland is therefore to introduce an Academic English Language Requirement which is specified in terms of achievement in NCEA, CIE and IB. Students will need to meet the requirement, stipulated below (as well as other entry and programme requirements), in order to be offered an unconditional place at the University:
a. For those applying on the basis of NCEA results: The applicant must have gained a minimum of 17 credits in English at Level 2 or 3. It is important to note that the Academic English Language Requirement is not intended to exclude students from the University. Those who do not meet the standard will have a further opportunity to strengthen their prepara-tion in this key competency while undertaking the initial stage of their degree studies. Otherwise qualified appli-cants who do not meet this standard will still be admitted to the University but their ongoing enrolment will be conditional on passing a specified for-credit course in academic English in their first year of university study.
On the 6th and 7th June, the Liston
College Prefects took part in a 24
hour cycle-a-thon where they
were in the pavilion riding 2 bikes
continuously from 2pm on
Thursday 6th June to 2pm on
Friday 7th June. The 24 hour was
quite challenging for them but
they enjoyed the company of each
other and were supervised by Mr
Girven. The Liston College Prefects
would like to thank Ron Jones and
the PE department for providing
the bikes and bike trainers, as well
as Mrs Ryan, Miss Hogan and Ms
Takeda, who generously provided
meals for us over the 24 hours.
So far the money raised for the Catholic Caring Foundation is over $2000 and donations are still to come.
