Term 3, Week 10 September 20, 2019 The House of 1000 Mirrors (Japanese folktale) Principal's Editorial Long ago in a small, far away village, there was place known as the House of 1000 Mirrors. A small, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit. When he arrived, he bounced happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. He looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. To his great surprise, he found himself staring at 1000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as fast as his. He smiled a great smile, and was answered with 1000 great smiles just as warm and friendly. As he left the House, he thought to himself, "This is a wonderful place. I will come back and visit it often." In this same village, another little dog, who was not quite as happy as the first one, decided to visit the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he looked into the door. When he saw the 1000 unfriendly looking dogs staring back at him, he growled at them and was horrified to see 1000 little dogs growling back at him. As he left, he thought to himself, "That is a horrible place, and I will never go back there again." All the faces in the world are mirrors. What kind of reflections do you see in the faces of the people you meet? Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. Galations 6:7 It’s worth a thought. Our Mission Statement -Our Vision -

Our Motto -

Through excellence in education to develop people of integrity and Christian character.

Nurture for today. Learning for tomorrow. Character for life.

Nihil Sine Deo - Nothing Without God

Value For T4 Week 1 General News

HumilityHumility is accepting that you are not always the most important person and that there is always something more to learn. People who are humble do not draw attention to themselves. Neither do they try to destroy others with their words. Humble people also do not put themselves down.

"The measure of a truly great man is the courtesy with which he treats lesser men." - Anonymous

"Don’t be selfish. Don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves." - Philippians 2:3,4

PB4L Focus I know accidents can happen; I consider others around me.

Nurturing Young MindsFriendship and Social Skills - Part II

Social and emotional literacy built around the SAFE criteria have a better chance at improving social skills and academic performance.

Sequenced: Follow a logical break down of skills.

Active: Allow students an opportunity to practise the skill through role play and practice.

Focussed: Time is dedicated to teaching specific skills.

Explicit: Specific skills are taught regularly.

Focussing on strengths is especially important when a child or young person is struggling to get long with others. It is important not to give too much feedback to a child about what needs improving without balancing it by celebrating existing and developing strengths.

Skills to be Taught: • Empathy • Keeping calm • Friendly facial expressions • Good listening • Social problem-solving

These skills can improve over time with practice and maturity.

Book WeekIt has been an eventful term, especially the exciting and engaging activities Book Week had to offer.

The Hunter Chronicles

Our guest author, Tony Knight, the co-author of The Hunters Chronicle privileged us with his motivating, captivating and interactive story telling. The students enjoyed listening to the animated story telling, as well as the generous prizes that were presented to our costume winners.

Street Library

Pastor Tony Knight also planted the idea of a Street Library, which we’re exploring. The concept of street libraries is a method of building community and supporting literacy initiatives. Many street libraries are popping up in many neighbourhoods. The books from the street libraries are free to borrow and can either be returned or exchanged for another book. Some of you might have seen the “street” library that was placed outside of the Acacia room during Book Week.

We also invited Dave Edgren, author of “The Serpent Scroll”, “Lamb Scroll” and “The Kingdom Scroll” to visit us during Book Week. Dave worked with our primary students to develop their writing skills.

Costume Parade

We’re very thankful for our creative students who used their imagination to dress up in many different colourful costumes. We challenged our school community to dress and depict their favourite Christian characters. With creativity, flair and resourcefulness, many students and parents rose to the challenge and came up with interesting, decorative and wonderful costumes that depicted their favourite Christian characters.

Many teachers, especially Mrs Shaw assisted with the organisation of some of the activities. Sandy and Mrs Vandenberg displayed the library and the books in an inviting and enticing manner so that we were able to view and purchase the books.

Sandy launched the “The 409 Bible Adventure Challenge” with Year 5 & 6 students. If you’re curious to know what this is, please ask a Year 5 or 6 student to explain it to you. This will give our students an opportunity to explain to you some of the exciting initiatives we have to engage parents and their children. To read together is to develop excellent literacy skills.

We hope your children are inspired by the many fascinating and admirable Bible characters. We also hope that Book Week has inspired you to read together as a family daily, so that one day your children can write their own stories.

Year 6 Canberra CampLast week our Year 6 class went to Canberra to extend their knowledge about how our system of government works in Australia. They were able to visit Parliament House and see our Prime Minister and even got a wave from our local MP Rob Mitchell.

A big highlight for the students was learning more about how things work at Questacon and seeing more coins being made at the Royal Mint.

All the students had a wonderful time and have many fond memories that will be with them for a long time.

Secondary News

University OfferThere was great excitement this week when Flona received an early offer of a place at La Trobe University next year through the Aspire Early Admissions Program. Flona wants to become a psychologist and she is on the right path now with a reserved place to study for her double degree of Bachelor of Psychology and Nursing in 2020.

The Aspire Program recognises a student's contribution to their community as well as their VCE results and Flona has held several leadership positions and has worked in a Peer Support program helping younger students. Many tertiary institutions are introducing such programs to reward the extra commitments of selected students. This is beneficial to students like Flona but it is also beneficial to the institutions which are attracting committed, positive young people to their student body.

Congratulations Flona and we wish you well in your journey beyond Gilson.

Primary Sport's Wall of FameThis term we have set up a Primary Sport's Wall of Fame in the Learning Corridor. This is to acknowledge the sporting achievements of students in our Primary School.

If your child/children have achieved something special in any sporting events during Term 3 or if they achieve success in sporting events during Term 4 please email Mrs Bergmann our Primary Sport Coordinator a photo and a brief description of their event. We are looking forward to displaying students' photos on our new Primary Sport's Wall of Fame.

Year 5 District BasketballOn Thursday September 12 the Year 5 students participated in the Year 5&6 District Basketball (Hoop Time) competition. The Year 5 students were put into three teams, a girls' All Stars, a boys' All Stars and a Rookie team. The students competed against 6 other schools from our Bridge Inn North District.

Unfortunately our Year 6 students were away on their Canberra Trip and were unable to participate in this event. All of the Year 5 students had an excellent day, demonstrating good sportsmanship and team work.

Division Athletics CarnivalCongratulations to Lavnoor, Sohani, Aira, Khoma, Cyrus and Eden who came either first or second in their events at the District Athletics Carnival on Thursday 22ndAugust, qualifying to compete in the Primary Division Athletics Carnival which was held on Tuesday 10th September.

House DebatingHouse Debating began on Wednesday with a Senior Debate involving Year 11 and 12 students. The topic was ’There is more hope than fear for the future” and both teams presented very persuasive examples in their speeches in an attempt to persuade their audience and the adjudicators Mrs. Kelso and Mr. Valderemao.

Barnett had the Affirmative side and Garmai, as the first speaker, began the debate strongly. She and Manreet and Melwyn all argued that with medical advancements, improved technology, more education and fewer people living in poverty it means the future is looking bright. On the other side we had Corliss with Declan, Joel and Dhvani arguing the negative case that we actually have quite a bit to fear from the future. They pointed to the invasive nature of technology, pollution and a lack of water as confronting issues for the future.

It was an outstanding standard of debating by our senior teams and the audience was very impressed with all the speakers. The research, preparation and presentation were evident in each speaker and all performed well with their respective teams. As a result, the scores were very close. In the end, Corliss won the debate with two of their speakers, Joel and Dhvani finishing on equal points for the Best Speaker award.

Congratulations to these students for setting a high standard for the upcoming debates at the Intermediate and Junior levels next term.

Senior Girls 3x3 BasketballWith the end of term came our final 3x3 matchup when the Barnett and Corliss Senior Girls took to the court in the fast paced 10 minute sport. Barnett took an early lead and some close misses from Corliss made it hard for them to get back in the game as they suffered a loss 6 points to 1.

Great work Barnett on taking out 4 of the 6 matches for this series.

Dear Gilson College School Community, We will be holding the School Fun-Run as a major fundraising event this year on 19th December 2019! We’re doing it to raise much needed money for school infrastructure and resources to maintain the school academic excellence. About the Program The School Fun-Run promotes healthy and active lifestyles while helping us raise funds! It’s all about participation, with students treated to a great day as a reward for their fundraising efforts. Family support is key to our fundraising success and we encourage everyone to get involved. How Does My Child Fundraise? Firstly, go to schoolfundraising.com.au and create a student profile page. Everything to do with your fundraising revolves around this page. Once you have completed this, read through your Sponsorship Form, which has instructions on how to raise money and order prizes. Students who raise just $10 will receive a reward for their effort. The more they raise, the better their reward – don’t forget to check these out in the sponsorship form! We have educated students on the dangers of door knocking without adult supervision, and we encourage you to reiterate this at home. The best people to ask for sponsorship are people you know (e.g. friends, family, work colleagues and neighbours). Online Fundraising The easiest way to help your child raise money is through online fundraising, where students raise an average of $120. On top of raising more money, it’s also safer and easier than doorknocking and you don’t have to worry about handling money! To start fundraising online, go to your student profile page at schoolfundraising.com.au and share your online fundraising link. Getting Involved Not only can you support the school and students with your sponsorship – but you can join in on the fun! We would love to welcome parents and family members to attend the School Fun-Run. If you would also like to volunteer to help on the day, please contact me on the details below. I can’t wait to see you at our event! Ordering Prizes – ALL PRIZES MUST BE ORDERED ONLINE Prizes MUST be ordered between the 15th November 2019 and 20th November 2019. Simply visit schoolfundraising.com.au to create / log into your Profile Page between these dates. Then click on the ‘CLAIM YOUR PRIZE’ button and follow the prompts. If you have any questions, please contact the School Fun-Run team on 1800 FUN RUN and they will gladly assist! Thank you, good luck and happy fundraising!
