TINTAGEL VISITOR CENTRE With reference to the Visitor Centre, we will soon be into the main part of the season and we thank all of our volunteers for their help. Newcomers to the village may be unaware that the Visitor Centre belongs to the parish and we are always looking for new volunteers to cover for holidays, sickness etc. so if you have 3 hours to spare a week you will be very welcome to join us. Please see the volunteer registration form overleaf, or you can apply online or just drop into the Centre for a chat. I would like to once more thank all our advertisers for their support and to Roger, Sue, David and Jo for their help to produce the most recent Tintagel Guide for 2015. Information for advertisers for the 2016 edition will be available shortly. TINTAGEL PARISH COUNCIL Last month we welcomed two new councillors, Mr. Richard Dale and Mr. Richard Hart to serve on the council. It is going to be a challenging year for the council particularly with the new arrangements for the toilets. As a council we do wonder how many more responsibilities we will have to take on over the coming years. The councillors give freely of their time and it is not always an easy job. TINTAGEL PARISH NEWSLETTER Unfortunately, the newsletter is quite a short one this month. Reminders are sent out in good time to regular contributors but they do not always respond. Please ensure that any items for inclusion are sent to the Parish Clerk in time for the next publication (see back page for dates). If you would like to be added to the list to receive a reminder, please contact the Parish Clerk. Mary Dyer Chairman Tintagel Parish Council

Tintagel Garden Club May 2015 Newsletter

This months speaker was Howard Wills who owns the national collection of Sempervivums at his 3 acre small holding near Great Torrington. Howard gave a great talk last year on the flora and Fauna of New Zealand and we invited him back to talk about his great passion; sempervivums. Their name means always alive and they are tough little plants that grow naturally on or between rocks in the mountain regions of Europe,Turkey, Iran, Morocco and the Balkans. They grow very well in all weather conditions in the southwest provided they have very good drainage, and a little shelter from heavy rain or hail for some varieties in the winter. Sempervivims form cushions of spiral rosettes and can be easily propagated by potting up small plants from the edge of the rosettes or from seed. His ideal compost is 50% John Innes number 1 or 2 with 25% loam,25% of sharp sand, some slow release fertilizer and a top dressing of gravel. When the plants reach maturity which is only in a few years, they throw up large flower stalks which produce a multitude of attractive small flowers. The main plant then dies, but there are usually more than enough baby plants around its edge to take its place. Howard brought in a selection of plants grown in containers including troughs shallow clay pots and even in an air brick and they looked particularly attractive in small groups, which showed their great variety in shape and colour. He also brought in some plants for sale, which were quickly snapped up!! We all thanked for a very interesting talk with some excellent of photographs, and we now have many new beautiful little additions to our gardens! Chris Weight Newsletter Secretary

Do You Remember The Goon Show? This was a show in the 1950s that was either loved or hated by the public. I loved it and the wonderful characters, inspired by Spike Milligan, can never be forgotten. There was Major Bloodnok, Hercules Grytpype-Thynne, Bluebottle and Henry Crun (Peter Sellers). Eccles, Minnie Bannister and Count Jim Moriarty, (Spike Milligan). Harry Secombe as Neddie Seagoon, Uncle Oscar, Private Bogg, Nugent Dirt, Izzy, Welshmen and Yorkshire Men. Michael Bentine was a member of the Goons from 1951 to 1953, when he left the series. During 1951 to 1960 there were 238 shows and 12 specials, Originally the programme was called Crazy People but was changed to the Goon Show. The scripts had silly plots with surreal humour, puns, catchphrases and an array of weird sound effects. Some of the later episodes had electronic effects devised by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. These sounds were re-used by other shows for decades afterwards. The team made some unforgettable recordings, amongst the songs were Im Walking Backwards For Christmas , Bloodnok's Rock and Roll Call and the The Ying Tong Song. The last time all three Goons met up they recorded The Raspberry Song and Rhymes in 1978 There were some lovely catchphrases like . "He's fallen in the water!" (Little Jim), "You dirty, rotten swine, you! You have deaded me!" (Bluebottle), "You can't get the wood, you know." (Henry, Minnie), "You silly, twisted boy, you." (Grytpype-Thynne) and "You can't park 'ere, mate" (Willium) -- Milligan's dig at officious BBC commissionaires. I can remember some of the unusual titles for the programmes like "The Egg of the Great Auk:, "The Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler (of Bexhill-on-Sea)", "The Affair of the Lone Banana", "The International Christmas Pudding", "The Tale of Men's Shirts" and so on and so on. The Last Goon Show of All, was broadcast on 5 October 1972, Wonderful memories of as really crazy programme that was probably aired before its time. Marvellous Memories. Were you a fan?! Old Post Office update Our exhibition this month is Diggin deeper; as part of the Festival of Archaeology we are hoping to highlight the lesser-known medieval history of the building. There will be reconstruction drawings, talks and hands-on activities, such as a mock-excavation, for kids. The house is open every day from 10:30am to 5:30pm, last admission is at 5pm. Our volunteers play a vital part in the Old Post Offices season. We are currently looking for people who have an interest in the local area and a love of heritage to act as welcomers at the Old Post Office. If you would like to find out more about these opportunities then please pop in to see us. For our younger visitors we have the 2015 list of 50 things to do before youre 11 , pick up your booklet and start the adventure today. Activities on offer at the Old Post Office include a snail race, hunt for bugs and look out for special events in August for making a home for an animal and creating wild art! All events have normal admission charges linked to them but our friendly and knowledgeable staff can advise you on National Trust membership if you would like any information and free entry to all of our places of interest.

If you wish to find out any more about any of the above, please contact the property on 01840 770024 or check the website; www.nationaltrust.org.uk/tintagel-old-post-office. We can also be found on Facebook.com/nt.topo and @ntoldpostoffice.
