Membership News … This year has provided us with some of the best weather in quite some time, and as I write this we have yet to see a day over 100 degrees. Timely showers have given us just the right amount of rainfall, and golf course conditions are flourishing. As the weather heats up and we edge closer to the inevitable “dog days” of summer, activities around the Club and opportunities for the entire family to enjoy the facilities are plentiful. Our new “Tunes ‘n June” concert series starts on June 5th and continues every Tuesday evening in June. This live music event is free for Onion Creek Members, and a great opportunity to hear some very accomplished musicians in the type of intimate setting that you can only find in Austin. Whether listening to the sounds of Kyle Park, playing a round of golf with Dad on Father’s Day, or enjoying a “Dive-in” Movie at the pool, be sure to take advantage of everything your Club has to offer during these summer months.
I am pleased to welcome our new Director of Tennis, Jennifer Gray, to Onion Creek Club. Jenny returns to the area after serving as the Director of Tennis at The Club at Cimarron in Mission, TX for the last three years. Jenny is an active member of the USPTA and USPTA Texas for over ten years, and was recently honored with the 2011 USPTA Texas Pro of the Year Award. Please join me in offering Jenny a big Onion Creek welcome.
Don’t forget to follow Onion Creek Club on Facebook for more updates and information about activities around the Club.
See you at the Club!
SUMMER IS HERE and it is time to plan your Pool Parties! What better way to celebrate the joys of summer than to gather
all those you love for a fun-filled day by the Pool? Birthdays, Anniversaries, Family Reunions, or no reason at all.

Golf Shop News Golf Course MaintenanceMichael Moore, Golf Course Superintendent
I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful spring weather we had over the last couple months and have geared up for the long dog days of summer. This year started out pretty well with a mild winter, but got a little rough in the spring time with a tough transition on about 6 to 7 greens throughout the course. These greens typically have a tougher transition each year due to the size of the green, the location of the greens near trees, as well as poor drainage. With the milder winter and spring however, we were able to get these greens back a little faster than in years past. These troubled greens have shown small signs of improvement each year; however we have not totally eliminated our annual problems. You can be assured that we are trying to learn from years past, and taking new and different approaches to alleviate these problems in the future. For example, on #1 Original green we changed up several ofthings this spring to hopefully make our transition next springseem more seamless. We reshaped the back half of that green toincrease its size, along with lowering the collar on the back of the green to create a place for the water to surface drain off of this green. Along with changing some of the grades and sizes around the green; we put a different type of grass on the back half of that green that performs better in the shade. This will be a test plot for the next couple of years to see how these newer grasses will perform on our course. We are very optimistic that this will alleviate many of the annual problems that we are having on this green. Each year moving forward, we will be doing this to all of these problem greens to hopefully keep these annual transition problems to a minimal. As always, we appreciate your patience as we make theseimprovements to the golf course, and look forward to a greatsummer of golf!

OCCLA News OCCLA has received confirmation fromSgt. R. Spiller that our packages have arrived in Afghanistan and were much appreciated. Thank you for all your support for our Save Our Soldier program.
I never imagined I would be writing this letter so soon, when we were installed as the OCCLA Officers in May 2011. But despite all of the unexpected events of the past year, due to the fantastic planning of our dear Diana Barnard and the OCCLA board members she assembled, we have had a very successful year. It has been a very unique year requiring much flexibility. Thanks to each and every one of our members who stepped in to help as needed. Without everyone’s help and generosity this would not have been possible.
We raised over $4800 at the Artisans Showcase, and $2792 for scholarships at a Silent Auction with items generously donated by OCCLA members. An additional $950 was added to the Scholarship Fund via memorials and individual donations.
In the name of OCCLA, we were able to make a total of $7600 in charitable donations to such worthy causes as the Bastrop Relief Fund, SafePlace, Breast Cancer Resource Center, and the American Legion. We were able to return over $3700 to our members in such items as programs, birthday lunches, and door prizes. We’ve awarded $3250 in scholarships to 3 very deserving Onion Creek Club employees.
And, along the way we were able to have a lot of fun. We went on a bus trip to Retama, enjoyed a wonderful production of Oklahoma at Texas State University, decorated and undecorated the club for the holidays, hosted a Christmas Dance for more than 150 people, and co‐sponsored the New Year’s Eve party attended by 135 people.
I don’t believe I have ever been involved with a more caring group of women. Thank you for allowing me to fulfill Diana’s Presidential term. Now it’s time for our new OCCLA officers lead by President Cindy Keister to make their mark. Best wishes to each of them. I look forward to another amazing year.
Blessings,Jill Brown

As of this writing, the course is really shaping up for some great summer play. There are still a few greens that are struggling with the transition even with the extra venting and sanding, e.g. Michael has already resodded some areas around number one Original while he reworks the back sand trap. Numbers 3, and 4 have a few bad spots as does 10 and 18. But by the end of May, these should be grown in as well. For those of us that have been here a while, this year has been a difficult one, primarily due to the drought last year and the fairly dry winter and spring we have had. Now that we are seeing 80 and 90 degree temperature, the Bermuda will take off.
The tree project is on schedule, though the tree types had to be adjusted due to the limited availability of certain species at the nursery. The crepe myrtle move to the area between number one tee and the practice green should be completed by the end of May. As you have noticed, the tunneling project has been completed and renovation of the area will begin in the next couple months.
Regarding the winner of my question on which green is the smallest - the answer is number 10 North with a green size of 3021 square feet. The winner of a sleeve ot Titleist ProV1's - Peter Villesi. Question for this quarter - Which green is the largest - include an estimate as to its size in square feet, in caseof any ties.
For those of you that know about my book writing project, my wife gave me a present for finally completing it - she sent me to the Legends of Golf in Savanna, Georgia the week of April 15th. What a treat - The first two days were the 70 and older group- 36 players of which 25 had played at Onion Creek. Unfortunately for them, the crowds were sparse - my guess is maybe 1000 people were on the course, if that many. These guys can still play with a winning score of 21 under for the two day best ball event. Gibby Gilbert and JC Snead each took home $60,000. The last place team of 89 year old Doug Ford and his partner 83 old Billy Maxwell were 12 over par. Of the 38 teams, only 3 were over par. I was able to meet a few of the players I interviewed over the phone which was a real treat. One thing was very apparent - the crowds for the tournament for the week might have totaled 25,000. But I guess by today's standards, that is pretty good - but not by Onion Creek standards.
Enjoy your summer on the course!

BAT BOXES. The bat nesting box sponsored by Mike Northcutt has been put in place between the two ponds on #8 North Course. A second box, sponsored by Don Milberger, is located about fifty yards beyond the green on #12 North Course. Look for it on your right as you walk or rideto the 13th tee.
We purchased these bat boxes, which are of a new cylindrical design, from Bat Conservation and Management, Inc., www.batmanagement.com. Anyone may sponsor a bat box. Contact me if you have questions. The total cost is about $225.
NATURAL AREAS. During the past several weeks, Superin-tendent Michael Moore cut the grasses in the 22 acres of the natural areas we set aside as part of the Audubon InternationalCertification project. Because of the recent severe drought conditions, these areas became a big weed patch. Michael’s crew has applied a herbicide that is completely safe to the animals and insects (when applied at the labeled rates, which it has been). Our goal is for these areas to look well-manicured with minimal maintenance (no mowing, watering, fertilizing and applying chemicals).
We had been using the expression Environmentally Sensitive Area. That was incorrect since that is an identifier assigned by a governmental agency in specific protected land cases. Henceforth, the areas at Onion Creek Club marked with grey stakes with green tips will be known as Natural Areas. Please, no cart carts in Natural Areas.
Our golf professional, John Ferguson, has already announced
that Natural Areas will be played through the green per The
Rules of Golf: If you find your ball, play it as it lies. If the
ball is unplayable, use the unplayable lie rule. If you cannot
find your ball, use the lost ball rule.
BLUEBIRD NESTING BOXES. Thanks to Tootie Boswell, John Drake, and Reed Helmly for stepping forward to monitor the many bluebird boxes throughout the course. We can always use additional help on this project. Just give me a call.

Did you notice the heat in May? The Red Chili team was smokin hot at the annual Onion Creek Cup! Congratulations to Debbie Staub and her winning team. Our thanks to Debbie and Jody Gratz for a great tournament.
I hope all of you were able to make Hilary Lunke Day either on the course or to hear her speak at the luncheon following play. It was fascinating to hear her story of how she became a professional golfer. She even shared some insightful information about the WPGA and how mothers like herself survive on tour. She was gracious, informative and we were delighted to have her. We would love to have her back again anytime.
Our thanks to Butch Dalton, Arlene Monroe and the 9-hole group for chairing the Audrey Gooden Member-Member. This article was turned in for publication prior to the event but I know it was great!
Mark your calendars for our July 24th General Meeting which will be a “pool side chat” with Justin and John. They’ll be telling us about the benefits we have with The Dominion Group plus it’s your opportunity to ask them questions.
Don’t forget, with the hot weather on the horizon we’ll be teeing off at 8:30 starting in June.
Our next publication will be in September. Until then, remember……

MGA NewsYou Can’t Beat That! – a Tale of Two Tourneys
By Greg Holloway
MGA tourney often turn into a photo finish, with many teams or players finishing at or near the top of the leaderboard. Sometimes, however, one team or player clearly separates itself/himself from the rest of the field and runs away with the title. Such was the case in the two most recent MGA events.
The Loophole (held April 14) was dominated by the team of Paul Romero and Peter Viliesis. They came out with the intent of firing at every flag and, apparently, were more than successful, aided by two gross eagles in the shamble event. Their net (based on 60% of handicap) score of 56 easily lapped the field. A total of ten teams finished in the money, although only the top five finishers came away with Golfer of the Year Points (as required by the rules of the MGA). Here is the full list:
2nd – Randy Allen / David Boyle3rd – Jeff Opheim / Peter Contreras4th – Mike Obrien / Brice Custer5th – Bill Uhls / Doug Wilda6th ‐ Lee Raines / Jackie Mills7th – Rusty Thornell / Hondo Howard8th – Jim Alaniz / Steve Radcliffe9th – Ken Berg / David Heath10th – Don Millberger / Stu Osantowski
The Jimmie Connolly individual match play tournament was kicked off the weekend of May 5‐6 with a full‐handicap stroke play “event‐within‐an‐event” that served to seed the brackets for the matches themselves. Fifty‐eight players entered the fray, and Paz Pena walked away with the medalist crown by firing an impressive net 59 (which translates to a 76 gross). Not bad at all for the Paz‐man.
As of press time, eight players (Bech Bruun, Peter Contreras, Brice Custer, Bob Lander, Hal Marsh, Mike O’Brien, Jonathan Staub and Doug Wilda) have made it into the quarterfinals of the match play tournament. Tourney VP Paul Romero will send an email to all MGA members with final results as soon as they are available.
The next stops on the MGA tour are the Club‐sponsored Club Championship (June 8‐10) and re‐scheduled Bill Bass tournament (June 30), and the MGA’s Legends team event (July 14). The Club Championship and the Bill Bass offer a choice of Open, Senior and other flights to be played from varying sets of tees, depending on the flights. Check in the pro shop or on the website for details. The Legends team event will feature a course set‐up reminiscent of the days of the famous Legends tournament that started the current Champions Tour. Don’t let these opportunities for fun competition pass you by – join the 125 MGA members who have already played in an MGA event this year!
