Newsletter from the Temporary Governing Body of

Ysgol yr Eglwys yng Nghymru Penrhyn Dewi

The Temporary Governing body are delighted to share with you the new school badge for

Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi.

The new badge has been designed by the Graphic Design Team at Pembrokeshire County Council and

incorporates many of the themes from the designs submitted by the pupils of the three schools.

The badge reflects the St Davids Diocese and the Peninsula and it also incorporates the colours of the

three existing schools.

We would particularly like to congratulate Tom Rogers in Year 7 at Ysgol Dewi Sant who designed the

Dove of Peace which features prominently in the badge.

We would like to thank all the children who submitted such a wonderful array of designs.

The Temporary Governing Body was delighted with all the design proposals and they will all be kept to

form part of the history of the new school’s development.

The badge has now been approved by the Temporary Governing Body.

We would like to thank all the parents who contributed their feedback to the School Uniform

Consultation.

The Governing Body received 24 responses to the questionnaire from across the 3 schools.

The consultation responses contained a mix of views - some parents in favour of bringing in a slightly

smarter uniform, some against change to the existing arrangement and some expressing understandable

views of concern about significant change. One common thread that came across in several responses

was for a ‘through uniform’ which would reflect the 3-16 nature of the school.

Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi is a new school and the Temporary Governing Body was keen for a new uniform to

be introduced that will reflect the community ethos of the school and to introduce a uniform that the

students will be proud to wear.

Following a full discussion of the proposals, the Temporary Governing Body has approved the details of

the uniform of Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi.

Reasons the colours black, white and gold have been chosen

These are the colours of the St Davids Diocese and incorporate the colours of the St Davids Diocese badge.

The colours are currently those used by Ysgol Dewi Sant and are unique within Pembrokeshire.

These colours will ensure greater flexibility in the transition.

This will help with the transition for the purchasing of new sports kit. It will make it easier for a secondary sports

uniform to be phased in gradually as the colours will not fundamentally change. This will help with reducing the

initial costs of purchasing new uniform items.

Black trousers/skirts and white shirts and polo shirts are very easy to purchase cheaply from any major retailer.

They are the easiest colours to buy ‘off the rack’.

Financial implications of the new uniform

For each year group a maximum of three specific items will be branded for the new school.

The primary option for the early years of school uniform is no different to what is being asked of parents at present.

Unfortunately the Local Authority is currently reviewing their School Uniform Grants Policy. We are sorry not to be

able to provide more information at this stage.

Flexibility for Year 11 students in their last year of the new school

The Temporary Governing Body is sympathetic to some of the concerns surrounding Year 11 in the consultation. Pupils

in Year 11 will be expected to wear a standard plain white shirt and a tie and all pupils will be encouraged to purchase

a school blazer or school jumper. The school blazer will not be compulsory for the 2018-2019 academic year only. We

hope that many of the students will however chose to wear the full new uniform as they will be our role models for the

younger students in the school.

Availability of the new uniform

The new uniform will be available to purchase during the summer term. This will give families several months to spread

the cost, and to purchase the new uniform items over time.

Uniform Open Evenings will be organised during the summer term across all three school sites.

The purchasing of uniform will move to an online shop and parents will be able to have uniform delivered direct to their

home address. All parents will be offered support and guidance if they have difficulties purchasing the items online.

‘Second Hand Uniform’

Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi is considering operating a policy where all old uniform can be recycled and returned to the school.

Over time there may be the option to purchase ‘second hand’ uniform items directly from the school and specific times

during the school year. Donations from all uniform will go directly into school funds.

Further details about the Uniform Open Evenings will be published in the

coming weeks. Look out for the next Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi newsletters. The

Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi Facebook page and Twitter feed will also be up and

running shortly.
