Happy Easter!

Principal’s message What a strange fortnight we have all had. It’s been full of mixed emotions as we manage the heightened pace of change, often ‘flying by the seat of our pants’.

While the staff are missing the children, and from their Google Classroom posts, many are missing their teachers, we are heartened by the lovely comments from parents and students alike.

Thanks for teaching me all this spelling, Mrs Ellis.

The whole family look forward to listening to your reading, Miss Childs, from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I like that we can learn languages like French. Thanks, Miss O!

I didn’t know how to use EP but my sister helped me. It’s super cool. Thanks, Mrs Wedeman! (EP - Education Perfect is a program for older students and is an optional activity)

Thank you for everything you have done this week which has been very new and challenging to schools.

These links and resources are excellent - thank you.

Thank you so much for all this hard work on preparing resources.

Thank you for for structuring the work to match the school day. It’s just the right amount.

It’s great that our kids aren’t online all the time.

Just as routines are settling in at both home and school, we now break for Term 1 holidays where routines are thrown into disarray. To help our possibly exhausted parents, Mrs Patterson has prepared a list of ideas for the holiday period. Term 1 Week 11

Anzac Day 25 April 2020 Anzac Day is a little different this year with no formal ceremonies being held but this does not diminish its significance.

Families have been encouraged to stand on their driveway at 6am to commemorate Anzac Day. James Morrison, famous musician, is encouraging those with a brass instrument to play The Last Post.

Mrs Patterson has posted a reading of My Grandad Marches on Anzac Day on our You Tube channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3v4I3kGUj30&t=4s

The ode is recited as part of an Anzac Ceremony and your family might like to build this into your own ceremony.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them."

More information about Anzac Day can be found at https://www.army.gov.au/our-history/traditions/anzac-day

Lest we forget.

NSW Public Health Orders The NSW Public Orders issued on 30 March 2020 are located at https://gazette.legislation.nsw.gov.au/so/download.w3p?id=Gazette_2020_2020-65.pdf. Please be advised that these orders may be updated at any time but were correct as at 6 April 2020. This information is for the benefit of our community and to provide clarity. Below is an extract:

This Order directs that a person must not, without reasonable excuse, leave the person’s place of residence. Examples of a reasonable excuse include leaving for reasons involving— (a) obtaining food or other goods and services, or (b) travelling for the purposes of work or education if the person cannot do it at home, or (c) exercise, or (d) medical or caring reasons.

In addition, this Order directs that a person must not participate in a gathering in a public place of more than 2 persons. Exceptions include— (a) gatherings of members of the same household, and (b) gatherings essential for work or education.

P&C Update Greg Channer, our 2019 P&C Treasurer has now handed over the reins to Jess Swann. Thank you, Greg for all your wonderful work with the P&C’s finances, especially with extra demands of the 150th Anniversary Fete. Greg has now taken on the role of coordinating the Fathering Project along with Mr Simpson and Miss Childs.

Giving Feedback One of the most powerful tools to support student engagement and improvement is the giving of feedback. While we are using Google Classroom and telephone calls to provide our students with feedback, you can also try it at home. We often use a star and a wish to provide feedback.

Star – something correct or well done

Wish – something to work on for next time

Some examples:

on the weekend I went for a bike ride with my mum.

Star – correct use of the fullstop

Wish – capital letter to start the sentence

Somewhere deep in the forest, a lonely bear lived in a dark and glomy cave.

Star – correct spelling of forest, lonely and dark

Wish – ‘oo’ in ‘gloomy’ needs a double o. Let’s practise some other words with that sound.

When your child has read aloud to you.

Star – I loved the way you read fluently.

Wish – Try and use expression when the characters are speaking. (Model how this sounds.)

The teacher had 48 counters. Some were yellow and some were red. If there were 28 red counters, how many were yellow?

Sudent response:

48 - 28 20

Star – the answer is correct and you used an algorithm

Wish – line up the columns (in this case 10s & 1s)

48 - 28 20

We hope these ideas help our parents as they navigate their way through learning from home.

You don’t need to give feedback on everything, just one thing each day if you can.

You may like to encourage your child to give you feedback as well. That could be interesting so choose carefully.

Please remember, that if frustration levels begin to rise, walk away and do something different for a while. It’s okay not to complete everything and it’s definitely okay to have some down time.
