Term 2 Week 9

Principal’s Message Seacliff Public Speaking Competition Talented speakers from Years 1 – 6 have showcased their persuasive techniques in the Seacliff Community of Schools’ Public Speaking competition. Congratulations, Herbie, Angelise and Juliana who represented the school today. These students demonstrated confidence, creativity, clarity, research ability, quick thinking and persuasive techniques to be selected to represent the school. Thank you, Mrs O’Brien, Miss O’Brien and Mrs Goodwin for organising this event.

SRC Semester One Thank you On Friday, the Semester 1 Student Representative Council will hold their final event. This event will be a ‘Comfy clothing and Movie Day’. Each child is requested to bring along a gold coin to support the Year 5 Leadership gardening project. The school is very grateful to the Semester 1 SRC representatives: Sam, Poppy, Harrison, Malakai, Ilana, Jermaine, Ruby, Jarrah, Lewis, Emery, Hannah, Boston, Cassia, Zac, Indy, Jacob, Audrey and Michael, and their patron, Miss Childs. Our Semester 2 representatives, including Kindergarten, are currently being elected and will be inducted on Wednesday 31 July at 2.30pm. Parents will receive an invitation.

Learning Conversations We hope many parents are able to come along on Tuesday 2 July at 3.15 – 4.30pm to have a conversation with their child about their learning. The focus of the afternoon is to learn about your child’s achievements and goals in literacy and numeracy and talk about how you can help them at home. You will also have the opportunity to view work samples. Learning Conversations complement the Semester 1 Report that is being sent home on 5 July. A reminder that siblings at Bulli PS are welcome to attend each others’ conversation. (No toddlers please.)

One hundred and fifteen children had parents attend in Term 1; wouldn’t it be wonderful to see more parents this time?

Enjoy your winter holiday! Rhonda Morton

SRC ‘Comfy Clothing and Movie Day’ – More info On Friday 28 June, the SRC are holding a ‘Comfy Clothing and Movie Day’. For a gold coin donation, students will be supporting the Year 5 Leadership Team Project in building a garden that all students will be able to access during recess and lunch. Students may come to school dressed in comfortable clothing including pyjamas, onesies, tracksuit pants and jumpers. We ask that care be taken when choosing a ‘comfy’ outfit as students must be dressed in clothing suitable for our school environment and sport day. We will get

‘comfy’ in the afternoon watching ‘Trolls’.

208-210 Princes Highway Bulli Footpath Works The footpath in front of the construction site at 208-210 Princes Highway Bulli will be reconstructed over the next week or so (weather pending). Please exercise additional caution when travelling to/from school. The footpath will more than likely be closed, requiring all those concerned to travel on the other side of the road (Church side) up until it is reopened. Please pay attention to and follow the signs at all times.

Student Reports Students who attended the school during Term 1 or commenced at the beginning of Term 2, will receive their Semester 1 reports on Friday 5 July 2019. These reports are based on student assessment and performance throughout Terms 1 and 2 and reflect the current curriculum taught in NSW schools. While every endeavour has been made to avoid errors, if one has slipped through, please return your child’s report after the holiday so it can be rectified.

Children in Years 1-6 will receive their Feedback to Parents Report for literacy and numeracy at the commencement of Term 3 as optional homework. This report complements your child’s Learning Achivements and Goals’ booklets that you will see at the Learning Conversations afternoon on Tuesday 2 July. The activities in the report are designed for you to assist your child to move forward in their literacy and numeracy.

Stage 3 Canberra Overnight Excursion 2019

To extend the classroom experience for Stage 3 students, an overnight excursion to Canberra has been planned for Thursday 24 and Friday 25 October 2019. The cost for the two day excursion will be approximately $165.00 per student. A note with the details will be sent home early next term and a deposit of $20.00 will need to be paid by Tuesday 6 August.

1/2MD Letters to Australian Defence Force In Week 1 Term 2, after attending the school ANZAC service and learning about ANZAC day in class, each student from 1/2MD wrote a letter to an unknown person in the Australian Defence Force. We asked them questions such as what do you eat for breakfast, do you get to watch TV, what type of bed do you sleep in and which part of the Defence Force are you in? Our letters were kindly posted by Zali and her mum Lou and they organised a little care package with some lollies and food to be sent alongside our letters to the servicemen and women overseas. Last week we received letters back all the way from Iraq. The students had a great day reading through the letters and learning more about what life is like on deployment serving our country. Henry was lucky enough to receive 2 patches of the NZ flag from a solider from New Zealand in his troop. Thank you, Zali and Lou, what a great experience and memory the students will have to cherish. Kate Childs 1/2MD Teacher

Sticks and Stones performance

Last week, students from Bulli Public School attended the wonderful Sticks & Stones performance in the school hall. Guy and Harry played the characters Toby, TJ, Joe and Dad and entertained everyone with their acrobatics, unicycling and juggling. As well, they gave important messages about dealing with emotions, standing up to bullies, cooperating with others and online safety. Teachers and students agreed that it was one of the best shows they had seen at school. Some of the strategies the character of Toby used when he was angry or frustrated were breathing, counting to ten, putting his hands in his pockets and finding his calm place. Follow up lessons will be taught at school to reinforce concepts from the show. You may like to talk to your child about some of the things they liked about and learnt from the show. Natalie Patterson (Assistant Principal)

What’s happening in KC?

Wow, what a busy term!

KC has been working hard reading, writing, solving

mathematical problems and exercising our bodies and

minds. We have also been painting. Please visit the

office foyer to see our beautiful butterflies.

Last week, students from K-6 watched the ‘Sticks and

Stones’ show. The highly engaging and entertaining

play was a brilliant way to give children strategies for

dealing with anger and resolving conflict. Students

learnt that problems can be handled in a calm

measured way without resorting to violence. The

message – if angry then stop, breathe, hands in

pockets, walk away, count to 10 and talk about your

feelings.

Yesterday, we went to the ‘Sticks and Stones’ show.

My favourite bit was when Toby became calm again.

Toby first was angry in the beginning because TJ was

mean to him. Thomas

My favourite part was that Toby was friends with his

brother. I learnt about getting angry and going to a

calm place and calm down. Kade

My favourite was the juggling. Toby was in his angry

place. Kenzie

My favourite part was when two people were doing

tricks. One person on the bottom was holding another

person pretending to be Superman. Andy

We went to the ‘Sticks and Stones’ show. My

favourite things was the juggling and the unicycle and

the dancing. Arkie

Friendly Kids Friendly Classrooms The social skill for home discussion this fortnight is…

SHARING It’s fair to share!

Dos * Offer to share your things when you feel that other people would enjoy them too. * If someone asks to use something of yours, say ‘yes’ and show them how to use and take care of it properly. * Put away or use privately anything you are not willing to share or aren’t allowed to share. * If you and another person both want to use something that neither of you own, take turns at using it for an equal amount of time. You may need to negotiate about this. * Remember to tell people that you allow to use your things, if there are special ways to care for these things. Other important tips * Food is not for sharing. This is about health and safety as some students have severe reactions to certain types of food. Your teacher will share any birthday cakes that are brought to school. * Always have your parent’s permission before you bring anything to school to play with. If you don’t want to share - leave it at home. * If you are thinking of bringing a special item to school and you are not sure if it is appropriate, check with your teacher. (eg pet, valuable technology, heirloom, collector’s item) * Items that belong to the school are for everyone to share.

LIBRARY NEWS Book Fair

The 2019 book fair was another successful event. Thanks to the generosity of families, the fair took $5025 on the day which entitles the school to keep $640 worth of books from the fair with a further $958 to spend on resources for the school. Thank you to those families who purchased and donated books to our library. It is very much appreciated by our students. The book fair would not happen without the help of our library monitors: Sally, Ashleigh, Rebecca and Kalani, and our cashiers: Mrs Goodwin, Mrs Anderson, Mrs Saddi and Mrs O’Brien. Thank you again for your support, Miss O’Brien Librarian
