Short Slide keysShort slide keys enable multitasking. For example,if you are viewing images, with the Music player onthe background, and you want to skip to the nextor the previous track, press the Play/Pause key tomake the forward and rewind keys available.

Insert SIM card and batteryAlways switch the device off and disconnect thecharger before removing the battery.1. With the back of the

device facing you,press and hold therelease button andlift up the cover.

2. Insert the SIM cardinto the cardholder. Ensure thatthe bevelled corneron the card is facingright, and that thecontact area on thecard is facing down.

3. Insert the battery.

4. To replace the cover,direct the top lockingcatch toward its slotfirst and then pressdown until the coverlocks into place.

Switch the device on1. Press and hold the power key.2. If the device asks for a PIN

code or lock code, enter it,and press the leftselection key. The factorysetting for the lock code is12345. If you forget thecode and your device islocked, your device willrequire service andadditional charges mayapply. For moreinformation, contact a Nokia Care point or yourdevice dealer.

Antenna locationsYour device may have internal and externalantennas. As with any radio transmitting device,avoid touching the antenna area unnecessarilywhile the antenna is transmitting or receiving.Contact with such an antenna affects thecommunication quality and may cause the device tooperate at a higher power level than otherwiseneeded and may reduce the battery life.

Memory cardUse only compatible microSD cards approved byNokia for use with this device. Nokia uses approvedindustry standards for memory cards, but somebrands may not be fully compatible with this device.Incompatible cards may damage the card and thedevice and corrupt data stored on the card.

Insert the memory cardA memory card may be already inserted in thedevice. If not, do the following:1. Place your finger in the recess beside the cover

of the memory card slot, and lift the cover. Pullthe cover to the left to reveal the hinge, andswing the cover to the side.

2. Insert a compatible memory cardin the slot. Ensure that thecontact area on the card is facingdown and towards the slot.

3. Push the card in.You can hear aclick when thecard locks intoplace.

4. Push the hingeback in, andclose the cover. Ensure that the cover is properlyclosed.

Remove the memory card

Important: Do not remove the memory cardin the middle of an operation when the card is beingaccessed. Removing the card in the middle of anoperation may damage the memory card as well asthe device, and data stored on the card may becorrupted.1. Before you remove the card, press the power

key, and select Remove memory card. Allapplications are closed.

2. When Removing memory card will close allopen applications. Remove anyway? isdisplayed, select Yes.

3. When Removememory card andpress 'OK' is displayed,open the cover of thememory card slot.

4. Press the memory cardto release it from theslot.

5. Pull out the memorycard. If the device is switched on, select OK.

Charge the batteryRegular charging1. Connect a compatible charger

to a wall outlet.2. Connect the power cord to the

device. If the battery iscompletely discharged, it maytake a while before thecharging indicator startsscrolling.

3. When the battery is fullycharged, the chargingindicator stops scrolling.Disconnect the charger fromthe device, then from the walloutlet.

Tip: Disconnect the charger from the walloutlet when the charger is not in use. Acharger that is connected to the outletconsumes power even when it is notconnected to the device.

USB chargingYou can use USB charging when a wall outlet is notavailable. With USB charging, you can also transferdata while charging the device.

1. Connect a compatible USB cable to your PC andthe device.

Tip: You can also use any compatible USBenabled device for charging.

2. If the device is switched on, you can select fromthe USB mode options on the display of thedevice.

HeadsetYou can connect a compatible headset orcompatible headphones to your device. You mayneed to select the cable mode.

Warning: When youuse the headset, your abilityto hear outside sounds may beaffected. Do not use theheadset where it canendanger your safety.To make handsfree phonecalls, use a headset with acompatible remote controlunit, or use the microphoneon the device.You can also connect acompatible TV-out cable to theNokia AV Connector (3.5 mm)of your device.Do not connect products thatcreate an output signal as thismay cause damage to thedevice. Do not connect anyvoltage source to the Nokia AVConnector.When connecting any externaldevice or any headset, other12

ShortcutsTo switch between open applications, press andhold . Leaving applications running in thebackground increases the demand on batterypower and reduces the battery life.To view your multimedia content, press themultimedia key.To start a web connection (network service), in thestandby mode, press and hold 0.In many applications, to view the most commonoption items ( ), press the scroll key.To change the profile, press the power key, andselect a profile.To switch between the General and Silent profiles,in the standby mode, press and hold #. If you havetwo phone lines (network service), this actionswitches between the two lines.To call your voice mailbox (network service), in thestandby mode, press and hold 1.To open a list of last dialled numbers, in the standbymode, press the call key.To use voice commands, in the standby mode, pressand hold the right selection key.

To remove an application from the menu, select it,and press C. Some applications may not be removed.

Display indicators The device is being used in a GSM network

(network service). The device is being used in a UMTS network

(network service). You have one or more unread messages in the

Inbox folder in Messaging. You have received new e-mail in the remote

mailbox. There are messages waiting to be sent in the

Outbox folder. You have missed calls.

The ringing type is set to silent, and the messagealert tone and e-mail alert tone are set to off.

A timed profile is active. The device keypad is locked.

A clock alarm is active. The second phone line is being used (network

service). All calls to the device are diverted to another

number (network service). If you have two phonelines, a number indicates the active line.

Your phone is connected to a network viawireless LAN or UMTS (network service) and readyfor an internet call.

A compatible microSD card is in the device. A compatible headset is connected to the device. A compatible TV out cable is connected to the

device. A compatible text phone is connected to the

device. A data call is active (network service). A GPRS packet data connection is active (network

service). indicates the connection is on hold and that a connection is available. A packet data connection is active in a part of the

network that supports EGPRS (network service). indicates the connection is on hold and that aconnection is available. The icons indicate thatEGPRS is available in the network, but your device isnot necessarily using EGPRS in the data transfer.

A UMTS packet data connection is active (networkservice). indicates the connection is on hold and

that a connection is available. 15

High-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) issupported and active (network service). indicatesthe connection is on hold and that a connectionis available.

You have set the device to scan for wireless LANs,and a wireless LAN is available (network service).

A wireless LAN connection is active in anetwork that has encryption.

A wireless LAN connection is active in a networkthat does not have encryption.

Bluetooth connectivity is on. Data is being transmitted using Bluetooth

connectivity. When the indicator is blinking, yourdevice is trying to connect with another device.

A USB connection is active. Synchronisation is in progress.

Transfer contentYou can use the Switch application to copy contentsuch as phone numbers, addresses, calendar items,and images from your previous Nokia device to yourNokia N85 using Bluetooth connectivity.The type of content that can be transferred dependson the model of the device from which you want totransfer content. If that device supportssynchronisation, you can also synchronise databetween the devices. Your Nokia N85 notifies you ifthe other device is not compatible.If the other device cannot be switched on withouta SIM card, you can insert your SIM card in it. Whenyour Nokia N85 is switched on without a SIM card,the offline profile is automatically activated, andtransfer can be done.To retrieve data from the other device for the firsttime, on your Nokia N85, select Switch in theWelcome application, or press , and selectTools > Utilities > Switch.Content is transferred from the memory of the otherdevice to the corresponding location in your NokiaN85. The transfer time depends on the amount ofdata to be transferred.For more information on Switch, see the user guide. 17

Navi™ wheelHereafter referred to as scroll key.Use the Navi wheel to move around the menus andlists (up, down, left, or right). Press the scroll key toselect the action shown on top of the key or to showthe most used options .To turn the Navi wheel setting on or off, press ,and select Tools > Settings > General > Naviwheel > Navi wheel.When the Navi wheel setting is switched on, you canscroll quickly through Photos, Music Player, NokiaVideo Centre, Contacts, and Messaging lists, or themultimedia menu. The rim of the scroll key lights upwhen one of these applications is in the foreground.1. Move the tip of your finger gently around the rim

of the scroll key clockwise or anticlockwise. Keepmoving your finger until scrolling starts on thedisplay.

2. To continue scrolling, slide yourfinger around the rim of thescroll key clockwise oranticlockwise.

Sleep mode indicatorThe rim around the Navi wheelilluminates slowly when the device is in sleep mode.The light varies periodically as if the device wasbreathing. To switch off the illumination, press

, and select Tools > Settings > General >Navi wheel > Breathing.

Multimedia menuWith the multimedia menu, you can access yourmost frequently used multimedia content. Theselected content is shown in the appropriateapplication.

1. To open or close themultimedia menu,press the multimediakey.

2. To browse the tiles,scroll left or right, or, ifthe Navi wheel settingis set on, slide yourfinger on the rim of thescroll key.The tiles are thefollowing:● TV & video — View your last watched video

clip, video clips stored on your device, oraccess video services.

● Music — Enter Music player and the Nowplaying view, browse your songs andplaylists, or download and manage podcasts.

● Images — View your most recently takenimages, start a slide show of your images orvideo clips, or view media files in albums.

● Games — Try out N-Gage games (networkservice).

● Maps — View your favourite locations in theMaps application.

● Internet — View your favourite web links inthe browser.

● Contacts — Add your own contacts, sendmessages, or make voice calls. To add a newcontact to an empty position on the list, pressthe scroll key, and select a contact. To send amessage, in the multimedia menu, select acontact, and Options > Send textmessage or Send multimedia msg..

3. To scroll up or down in a tile, press the scroll keyup or down. To select items, press the scroll key.

To change the order of the tiles, select Options >Arrange tiles.To return to the multimedia menu from an openapplication, press the multimedia key.

MapsWith Maps, you can see your current location on themap, browse maps for different cities and countries,search for addresses and different points of interest,plan routes from one location to another, and savelocations as landmarks and send them tocompatible devices. You can also purchase extraservices, such as guides and a turn-by-turnnavigation service with voice guidance.

Tip: Location information is automaticallyadded to the file details of an image if Recordlocation is set on in the camera settings. Ifyou want to see where the image wascaptured on a map, open Photos.

Press , and select Maps. When you use Maps forthe first time, you may need to define an internetaccess point for downloading map information foryour current location. To change the default accesspoint later, select Options > Tools > Settings >Internet > Default access point (shown onlywhen you are online).Almost all digital cartography is inaccurate andincomplete to some extent. Never rely solely on thecartography that you download for use in thisdevice.

When you browse the map on the display, a newmap is automatically downloaded if you scroll to anarea which is not covered by maps alreadydownloaded. These maps are free of charge, butdownloading may involve the transmission of largeamounts of data through your service provider'snetwork. For more information on datatransmission charges, contact your serviceprovider.To prevent the device from automaticallydownloading maps through the internet, forexample, when you are outside your home cellularnetwork, select Options > Tools > Settings >Internet > Go online at start-up > No.Download mapsNokia Map Loader is PC software that you can use todownload and install maps for different countriesfrom the internet to your device or a compatiblememory card (if inserted). You can also use it todownload voice files for turn-by-turn navigation. Touse Nokia Map Loader, you must first install it to acompatible PC. You can download the PC softwareat www.nokia.com/maps. Follow the instructionson the screen.20

If thisdoes not resolve your issue, try the following:● Reset the device: switch off the device and

remove the battery. After a few seconds, replacethe battery, and switch on the device.

● Update your device software with NokiaSoftware Updater. Visit www.nokia.com/softwareupdate or your local Nokia website.

● Restore the original factory settings as explainedin the user guide. Your documents and files arenot deleted in the reset.
