Spring is upon us as we head into September and October. Life starts getting a bit more active again especially as the night time heats up.

Thank you to everyone who made the recent Ekka Day at the club such a huge success. Without a doubt the biggest one we have had and the new children’s play area certainly got the thumbs up of approval from many of the (younger) attendees and the surrounding new outdoor areas proved a big success with mum and dad being able to make great use of them.

If you haven’t already got tickets for the Australian Foo Fighters playing here on 1st September, you might just have a few days to do so as you receive this magazine.

We had a blast last month with Mark Anthony’s hypnosis show and next month we welcome along Matt Hollywood one of Australia’s best known Comedy Magicians to the Auditorium. Matt’s stage shows are renowned for their hilarity and you can check out some clips of his shows and TV appearances on YouTube or at www.matthollywood.com. Matt comes to Norths on Saturday 6th October.

And then in November we have the Australian Roy Orbison Tribute Show on Saturday 3rd November. One of the best tribute shows to the Big O that you can see, check it out on the web at www.theroyorbisontributeshow.com.

And then the race that stops the nation is upon us once again – Tuesday November 6th is Melbourne Cup Day. Make sure you book your tickets early for this once a year event.

The fun and exciting Melbourne Cup Calcutta will be held on the evening of Monday 5th November so make sure that you have your tickets for this – there is a guaranteed prize pool up for grabs of $7,500. If you have never taken part in a Calcutta they are a lot of fun and all it takes is one ticket to win it!

We commented last month in our magazine of our adopted charity for this financial year being Breavehearts.

Friday 7th September will see us going all out to support White Balloon Day in aid of this organisation, its message and its activities. This is becoming a

bigger and bigger day every year and we will have the club decked out with white balloons throughout and along the Anzac Avenue fence line to draw attention to the message of “Help us protect our kids”. We hope that many of you within our local community will join us on that day and raise your voice with us to make our community safer still for our children in which to grow up.

I would also like to take a moment to remember the passing of one of our former chefs at this club and our sister club at Nundah, as very tragically Nicci Dunn passed away at the young age of just 33 after her battle with cancer. Nicci leaves behind her a husband and a young daughter of just two years old.

We look forward to seeing you all here at the club over the next couple of months, I can’t reveal everything here of course and you might find one of two other surprises coming up soon too! A whole galaxy of surprises in fact. Watch this space!

How does the Calcutta work? Raffle tickets costing $1 each are sold, concluding at 6.45pm on Monday 5th November 2012 (the night before Melbourne Cup Day), with the Calcutta commencing then at 7pm. These ticket sales create a pool of money called the “prize pool”.During the Calcutta, 24 of the tickets sold are drawn out for the respective 24 Melbourne Cup Horses (2012). If your ticket is one of the 24, you will be a ‘horse owner’ for the Calcutta Event. Following the draw each horse will be auctioned in descending order of barrier numbers. Anyone can bid on any horse during the auction. The new successful bidder must pay the full amount of the bid. 50% of the bid, is paid to the original horse owner, final 50% paid to the prize pool. The successful bidder is now the new ‘Horse Owner’ If the original ‘horse owner’ would like to keep their horse, they must have the highest bid. However the owner only has to pay half the amount that they bid, this amount will be added to the prize pool.

Friday 7 SeptemberWhite Balloon Day is a Bravehearts signature event held annually during Child Protection Week to raise awareness about child sexual assault and help empower survivors to break their silence. This year their goal is to raise $500,000 to help make Australia the safest place in the world to raise a child. One in five children will be sexually assaulted. You can easily help reduce this alarming statistic. Money raised will support education, prevention and counselling programs for children who have been sexually assaulted.

The white balloon was considered symbolic of the issue of child sexual assault following a public demonstration held in Belgium on October 20th, 1996. On this day, 300,000 people gathered with white balloons and white flowers in a show of public sympathy and support for the parents of several young girls who were either murdered or missing at the hands of a previously convicted and released pedophile Marc Dutroux. White Balloon Day is now an annual national event run by Bravehearts. It is widely supported by commercial, government and community sectors.

White Balloon DayIn addition, White Balloon Day enjoys overwhelming support and encouragement from the media, schools, churches, health practitioners, emergency services, the legal fraternity and community organisations.

In 1999, White Balloon Day was labelled a ‘phenomenon’ by the authorities after sparking a flood of child sexual assault disclosures to Queensland Police. Bravehearts now employs more than 30 staff and has offices in four states. The organisation provides a range of services for victims and their non-offending family members.Thanks to the dedication of Hetty, her staff, Bravehearts supporters and corporate partners, the silence is gradually being broken with more victims coming forward every day, empowered at last to speak out about their abuse and start on the path toward justice and healing.

Join us at Norths on Friday 7th September to help raise awareness and funds for Bravehearts. From 5pm kids will enjoy free face painting, magic, balloons and a visit from the Bravehearts mascot, Ditto.

EKKA FUN DAY


The Norths Ekka Fun Day was held on Wednesday 15th August and a fun time was had by all. Big crowds turned out to enjoy the many attractions including kids rides, animal farm, pony rides, face painting and free sample bags.

Norths has recently fostered a new training program with some of the local schools in the area. We spoke to the Human Resources Manager, Suzi Staples who has recently started this program within the Club, to find out exactly why she is on board with this exciting new opportunity. “Eleven years ago, Norths took me on board as a work experience student. Looking back at the time, never in a million years would I have thought the opportunities that were to arise for me would ever be possible. Whilst still at school, I was offered casual work after I completed my work experience. During grade 11 and 12 I was adamant to learn the ins and outs of Hospitality and do anything it took to keep going. Once I finished school, I was offered full time employment here at Norths.” From there, the Club invested years’ worth of training into me. I completed my Certificate III, Certificate IV and Diploma in Hospitality over the next 8 years of employment. During this time, my positions within the club grew and every day held new and exciting challenges for me. In 2011 I was then given the opportunity to apply for a position within the QCM Leadership Program. I applied and was accepted. I knew I had the potential to keep growing, and was so excited that the Management Team also had the confidence in me. By entering into

this program, I will complete my Advanced Diploma in Hospitality in 2013. During this time, I have seen Norths invest a lot of time and money into the staff training, and every year we have staff graduating from their Certificate III, Certificate IV and Diplomas!

After being given the opportunity to accept the Human

Resources Manager role this year, my first initiative was

around our area and giving some key students the

opportunity I was given. I currently have seven trainees

completing their Certificate III in Hospitality and 3

apprentices completing their Commercial Cookery

qualification.

I believe it is very important to invest time in young

people who have the passion for this industry, and I am

excited that I have some very keen students on board at

the moment, who will become the future of our industry.

Seeing them all grow with confidence every week as

they learn the industry, policies, procedures and most

importantly valuable life skills which they will be able to

take anywhere with them in life. This is something that

I look forward to continuing on, and look forward to

for fostering a great program which gives students the

ability to fulfil those dreams.
