NEWS Distnct IV D~rectors Phihp Cohen (left) and William Powell led discussions durmg the business meeting of the first annual District IV Caucus linois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michi- gan, Ohio, Tennessee, West Virginia and Wisconsin. The Dis- trict IV directors, William Powell (Tennessee) and Philip Cohen (Michigan) presided over 1he busi- ness meeting, leading discussions on ADA insurance codes regarding endodontics, the recent AAE Board of Directors meeting in Washing- ton D.C., the election format for District IV directors to the AAE Board and OSHA requirements. The District also passed a resolu- tion commending the AAE Endow- ment & Memorial Foundation for their promotion and support of the advancement of endodontics and donated $200 to aid in their fund- raising campaign. AAE President Joseph Maggio and President- elect Gerald Dietz, both members of District IV, also attended the meeting and discussed the current status of the Association. In addi- tion to the business meeting, Dr. Craig Cooper, an Indianapolis dentist, gave a presentation on "Implant Update," discussing the demographics relating to implan- tology and the pros and cons of many different systems. received two gif ts tota l ing $500,000 from the Washington Dental Service Foundation (WDSF) and the state of Washington, in matching contr ibut ions. The money will go toward the creation of a new endowed professorship at the school. Booth Gardner, Gover- nor of the state of Washington, presented the check to the school. Attending the presentation were AAE members James C. McGraw, president of the Washington State Dental Association, and Joseph D. McNal ly, WDSF p r e s i d e n t . Over 200 clinicians, researchers and graduate students from 10 countries attended the Second World Conference on Pulpal In- flammation and Pain held Oc- tober 15 and 16 at Columbia University. The two-day con- ference generated much new infor- mation and excitement and was the second successful conference organized by the Department of Endodontics at Columbia Univer- sity, and the Pulp Biology Group of the IADR. The conference was par- tially sponsored by Block Drug Co. Internationally known researchers and clinicians spoke on such topics as the mechanisms of den- tal pathophysiology, the immunol- ogical aspects of acute and chronic inflammation, the manage- ment of pulpal pain and ways of protecting the dental pulp from the various restorative dental pro-

Naiclorf Scholarship Award of $10,000 has been awarded to Dr. Mintsai Liu for the second consecutive year. Established by friends and family of the late Dr. Irv- ing J. Naidorf, the award is given to an individual who has made a signifi- cant contribution to basic research in pulp biology and endodontics. Dr. Liu, a student member of the AAE, has been investigating pulpal hemodynamics and the neuro-vas- cular relationship in the pulp with laser Doppler technology AAE members Alfred L. Frank, Dudley H. Glick and Amaldo Castellucci presented a three-day lecture and slide course in Catania, Sicily in Sep- tember 1988. They addressed a broad range of non-surgical and sur- gical endodontic approaches. Dr. Castellucci also served as translator for the course which was given on behalf of the Italian Society of E n d o d o n t i c s AAE members James A. Harrell Sr. of Elkin, North Carolina, and W. Robert Bidding- ton of Morgantown, West Virginia, were installed as President and President-elect respectively of the American College of Dentists on Oc- tober 7, 1988, at the College's An- nual Meeting and Convocation held in Washington, D.C.
