Our Parish Mission Statement We are a welcoming Catholic Christian community alive in the faith! Through Baptism, we are called to become the heart, the hands and the voice of Jesus. We do this through Eucharist, liturgical celebrations, prayer, and nurturing parish ministries, “That in all things God may be glorified.” (Rule of St. Benedict)

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Living As the Body of Christ

Some of Saint Paul’s best known and most beloved imagery is contained in the passages from First Corinthians that we have heard last week and this week: the many gifts granted by the one same Spirit and the many members making up the one Body of Christ. Few passages from sacred scripture more accurately sum up how Christian vocations work together.

Unlike some of Paul’s other writings, which are a product of the social and religious conventions of his time, these enable us to look at our own lives and the lives of those around us to discern what gifts, what vocations the Holy Spirit has given for the good of all.

We can likewise know the joys and sorrows of the other members of the Body and share in them for the strengthening of the whole Body of Christ.

FOLLOW ME 2016: “We Walk by Faith” - 2 Cor 5:7

In this Jubilee Year, experience the mercy and love of Jesus in a small group Lenten faith journey!

We invite you to deepen your faith, grow closer to Christ and connect with fellow parishioners! Consider spending some time each week during the six weeks of Lent by joining one of our many different Follow Me groups, each with its own unique theme and facilitator. For details or to register, go to our website at www.ndcarmel.com. If you do not have online access, please contact Jean Pankow at 973-538-1358, ext. 122.

Registration deadline is Thursday, January 28.

OUR PARISH LENTEN RETREAT “BE NOT AFRAID: EMBRACE MERCY!”

Please join us for our Parish Lenten Retreat, “Be Not Afraid: Embrace Mercy!” on Monday & Tuesday evenings, February 8 & 9, 2016, at 7:30pm. Fr. Anthony Ciorra will lead us in this spiritual kick-off of Lent, guiding us through the beautiful theme of embracing God’s Mercy:

Monday Night - MERCY : It Can Reawaken Your Life: Pope Francis invites us to respond to the God of surprises by accepting mercy’s gifts of healing, hope and freedom.

Tuesday Night - MERCY : Transforming Our Lives, Changing the Culture: How to bring healing to the family, the workplace, and the relationships in your life.

Father Tony is the Assistant VP for Mission and Catholic Identity at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut. His experience has included parish life, teaching, administration, retreat work, preaching and formation ministries. He has graduate degrees in psychology, history and pastoral theology, and is a certified spiritual director.

Anyone who has heard Fr. Tony speak can testify to how engaging and inspiring he is, and to how powerful his spiritual guidance can be. Father Tony will be speaking at all Masses the weekend of February 6 & 7.

ASHES FOR OUR HOMEBOUND

Do you have a homebound (or temporarily ill) family member or friend who lives in our local area and would like to receive ashes on Ash Wednesday? Please contact Dick White at 201-280-8943 to make arrangements for one of our Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist to visit and bring ashes to him/her.

A SPECIAL WEEKLY BLESSING!

Whether you have ever participated or not, come to our St. Benedict’s Chapel any Monday night at 7:00pm for a spiritually enriching prayer opportunity. We pray the Rosary at 7:00pm, followed by the Miraculous Medal Novena at 7:30pm. Our gathering includes music, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction. Come to honor Our Lady, because, after all, it is Mary who brings Jesus to us every day!

DO YOU ATTEND OUR SUNDAY, 7:30am MASS REGULARLY?

We could use your help! We are in need of ushers at this Mass, as well as a few people to take turns setting up for hospitality before the Mass. Many hands make light work! If you come to this Mass regularly and can lend a hand, please call Maria in our parish office at 973-538-1358, ext. 100.

PASTA DINNER THANKS!

We extend our deepest gratitude to the Social Events Ministry for their leadership, time and dedication in planning and hosting our Pasta Dinner last Saturday evening. What a blessing it was to share an evening of fellowship, entertainment and delicious food!

Special thanks to Anthony & Sons for donating the wonderful Italian bread and rolls for this event. If you have the chance, stop by the store, 20 Luger Rd. in Denville, and let them know how much we appreciate their generosity!

WHEN WINTER WEATHER CANCELS ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS

In case of inclement weather, all event cancellations will be posted on our website and on our app. You may also call our main parish number (973-538-1358) and you will be prompted to check extension #108 for all cancellation notices.

PRAYING FOR YOUR MARRIAGE…

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

—Genesis 2:24

“Before marriage,” author Gary Chapman says, “one’s allegiance is to one’s parents, but after marriage allegiance shifts to one’s mate.”

Why? Because God commands married couples to leave their parents and cleave to each other so they might become truly one.

Even so, there are many daddy’s-little-girls and mama’s-little-boys—husbands or wives whose heartstrings are still tied to their childhood roles. Whenever this is the case, there will be problems in the marriage.

Cleaving connects couples. It bonds them soul to soul and heart to heart. When a husband and wife look to each other for their needs to be met, they are in essence saying, “I trust you,” and trust is at the core of any successful marriage.

Ask God to continue building trust in your marriage -- to make your first allegiance to your spouse, and then to each other as husband and wife.

ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Friday, 7am-7pm

In our St. Benedict’s Chapel

“Many voices ask for our attention. There is a voice that says, "Prove that you are a good

person." Another voice says, "You'd better be ashamed of yourself." There also is a voice that says, "Nobody really cares about you," and one

that says, "Be sure to become successful, popular, and powerful." But underneath all these often very noisy voices is a still, small voice that says, "You are my Beloved, my favor rests on you." That's the

voice we need most of all to hear. To hear that voice, however, requires special effort; it requires solitude, silence, and a

strong determination to listen.” - Henri Nouwen

ALTAR SERVERS NEEDED

Altar Serving is a wonderful opportunity for children and teens to be active in ministry and serve their parish, and it also counts toward Confirmation service hour requirements. We are in need of servers, especially at the 5pm, 7:30am and 12:15pm weekend Masses. If your child is in 4th grade or above and you regularly attend any of these Masses, please consider participating in this ministry. For more information, please contact Maria Caivano at 973-538-1358, ext. 100, or [email protected]
