FOLLOWING JESUS MUST INCLUDE FOLLOWING JESUS IN HIS MISSION…

“From the very first words of His call, Jesus made it clear that to follow Him as a disciple had a purpose — a mission. Earlier I mentioned the challenge of convincing believers that they are disciples; now the challenge becomes to convince these disciples that they are actually missionaries. Of course, the word “missionary” can bring various reactions, but in its most basic sense, a missionary is someone on a mission — and a disciple of Jesus is a person with a mission. We are to be disciples making disciples. That means we are people still learning what it means to follow Jesus as His disciples ourselves, and an important part of that discipleship is helping those who may be a few steps behind us.”

THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT

THIRSTING FOR LIFE-GIVING WATERS

Especially during the Lenten, Holy Week, and Easter seasons, the prayer texts of the Eastern Church revel in paradoxical images of Christ: the eternal life who is put to death, the host of the supper who is also its meal, the thirsty crucified one with living water streaming from his side. These images flow from the evangelists' portrayals of Jesus and from his very ministry, during which he often upset or reversed people's expectations about him or the ways of God. This "reversal" is at play in today's Gospel, as Jesus speaks to an enemy foreigner who is also a woman

beneath his status. In addition he, the thirsting one, shows the woman to be the one truly thirsting. He--whose parched lips will say "I thirst" before he dies--is the source of life and life-giving water. Lent calls upon us to dwell on how each of us is thirsting for Christ, and it leads us, ultimately, back to the life-giving waters of our baptism into his Body.

AN INTRODUCTION TO CENTERING PRAYER

Do you seek the still, small voice of God? This workshop will help you to become more open to the God within and hear with the "ear of the heart." Presented by Contemplative Outreach of New Jersey, Saturday, March 25, 9am-noon (“coffee and…” beginning at 8:30am), here at Notre Dame, upstairs in Room 201. The workshop will include presentations, discussions, and opportunities to practice Centering Prayer. To register for this workshop or for further information, please contact Carol Schindler at [email protected] or call 973-285-9305.

FAITH FORMATION HAPPENINGS!

On Saturday, March 4, our 2nd grade Faith Formation families (72 children and 69 parents) participated in a retreat as part of their preparation for the children to receive their First Holy Communion this May. The retreat was intended to deepen the participants' understanding of Mass and the Eucharist. Experiences included a reenactment of the Last Supper, a sacred object scavenger hunt, a powerful video and a flower-making activity. At a point during the retreat (while the children played a game about the Mass and painted chalices) parents had the opportunity to participate in a brief adult catechesis session.

We extend our deepest thanks to our Elementary Faith Formation Coordinator, Diane Byrne, and to the teens and adults who assisted along the way with the preparation and completion of this discipleship experience for our families!

Please visit our website (click on Events/News and select Photo Albums) to view pictures from these wonderful discipleship sessions!

CERTIFICATE IN CATHOLIC EVANGELIZATION St. Paul Inside the Walls, in collaboration with Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology at Seton Hall University, is proud to offer a Certificate in Catholic Evangelization (CCE), and is now accepting applications for its 2017-2020 class.

This unique program seeks to equip Catholics to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to their homes, parishes and local communities. This corresponds with the wishes of Pope Francis, who emphasizes: "I want the Church to go out to the streets! I want us to resist everything worldly, everything static, everything comfortable, everything to do with clericalism, everything that might make us closed in on ourselves. The parishes, the schools, the institutions are made for going out."

The Certificate program offers two track options: non-credit bearing courses, or 18 credits in graduate courses through the School of Theology. These 18 credits may be applied toward a Master of Arts in Theology. Courses include Biblical Call Narratives, Catholic Evangelization, Evangelizing Church, The Parables of Jesus, Practical Evangelization, and Prayer, Discipleship and Community. Classes meet on Tuesday evenings at St. Paul Inside the Walls, Madison, and include two Saturday sessions per semester. Please visit www.insidethewalls.org for more information and to download an application.

"The CCE program exceeded my expectations. The scope of knowledge shared was impressive and of tremendous value. From gaining greater understanding of the theological and scriptural foundations of evangelization, to navigating the practical application of principles at the parish level, this program served as a springboard for advancing the mission of evangelization throughout our diocese and beyond. “

Note: Several disciples here at Notre Dame have journeyed through this program. since it was first offered in 2012. If you would like to speak to any of them regarding their experience, please contact Cristina Folan, [email protected] / 973-538-1358, ext. 105.
