“We can be heroes, just for one day…”- David Bowie

“David Bowie!”- PHISH We love our heroes. We’ve seen them in the movies, especially with new Marvel and DC films coming out every year. Up next, Marvel’s The Eternals on November 4! But who are our real heroes? They are our first responders: the firefighters, police officers, men and women of the armed forces — people who are willing to run into a burning building or a war zone to protect and serve. This selflessness is one character trait of every hero—pu ng others ahead of themselves. Selflessness is inspiring but also really tough to do. Suffering is an aspect of selflessness because it requires sacrifice. If we don’t understand suffering, it’s hard to understand Jesus. That was the struggle for James and John in the Gospel. They wanted the glory that comes with si ng at Jesus’ side but didn’t understand what it meant to be there. A few chapters later in Mark’s Gospel, Jesus hangs on the cross, and we see what it means to be at His right and le . It’s only at Calvary that the meaning of James and John’s request is clear. Rarely do we have glory without sacrifice. Winning a championship requires hours and hours of prac ce on the field. Having a moment of success on the stage requires months of hard work behind the scenes. Struggle and suffering may be a part of discipleship, but it’s not something Jesus asks us to do alone. Saint Augus ne once wrote, “God had only one child on Earth who lived without sin, but he didn’t have any that lived without suffering.” Christ knows

NOTES FROM THE PASTOR

what it’s like to suffer and chooses not only to teach us how to live with suffering but stands side-by-side with us in the midst of it. What greater way can we share sufferings with Christ than through the Eucharist? It’s at the altar that Jesus takes, blesses, breaks, and shares with us, and by His grace, those struggles, and sufferings are transformed into something precious — new life and freedom. If you are suffering, bring it to the altar where Jesus will share in it and transform it. Looking for some CPOP 50th Apparel? Check out our online store, open now through Sunday, October 31! Deacons: Serving You…Since A.D. 33! Please Support Next Weekend’s Deacon Forma on Collec on. Did you know that the first Chris an martyr, St. Stephen, ordained at the hands of the Apostles as one of the first seven deacons, lived and died proclaiming the Joy of the Gospel of Jesus Christ? In the last four decades, hundreds of men have proclaimed the same Gospel Joy with their own lives, lives of loving service that have in turn changed countless other lives for the be er. Called by Christ to minister to the people of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, our Deacons are preaching God’s Word to us, praying fervently for us, and caring compassionately for us each and every day. Each year, many men discern that same call and begin the process of forma on that, God willing, leads to ordina on as Deacons. You can help support these men as they discern God’s will in their lives. Deacon forma on in the archdiocese relies heavily on the support of the annual Deacon Collec on held this year on October 23rd and 24th.

Expectant Parents To help us iden fy the expectant families in our parish, there is a stand with two shelves of roses over by the Mother of Perpetual Help icon. The bo om set of roses are for families to take and write their names on the card, then place the rose in the top vase. All of Christ, Prince of Peace parishioners can then pray for these expectant families throughout their pregnancy and delivery. Please feel free to take your rose home a er your child has arrived.

Tiny Tots Donuts Bring your family and join us for donuts and a meet and greet in the church basement a er 9:45 am Mass on Sunday, October 24th.

Book Club The Book Club will be mee ng to discuss Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary - Unveiling the Mother of the Messiah by Brant Pitre on Monday, October 25th, at 7:00 pm in the Rectory basement. Please join in any or all of the group gatherings! Contact Diane Bialis at [email protected] for more informa on.

FIAT at the Seminary All women are invited for prayer and a talk presented by a Kenrick-Glennon Seminary faculty member on the third Thursday of each month. The next session will take place on October 21st, beginning with the rosary at 8:00 a.m. and followed by a talk on Wonder and Awe presented by Fr. Jason Schumer, Vice-Rector of Cardinal Glennon College. To receive updates about this and other Fiat Women's Group events, visit kenrick.edu/fiat.

Mulligan Anyone?? It seems like every day is Na onal (fill in the blank) Day. Just in the past few days, we had Pumpkin Spice Frappe Day (I celebrated this one!), Boss’ Day (did you remember this one?). Na onal Golf Lover’s Day was October 4th which brings us to today’s Na onal Day (October 17) Na onal Mulligan Day. I do not play golf (except mini golf), but I know what a mulligan is. Golfers some mes allow each other a mulligan – a not so great shot that is not counted against their score. It’s a do-over, no strings a ached. This got me to thinking… now I have no idea what God thinks of golf, but I have to believe He approves of the mulligan. Do you ever find yourself in need of a spiritual mulligan? I know I do at mes. We have just begun the Autumn season and things are changing all around us. This may be just the right me to have a fresh start in your prayer life, or a resolve to grow closer to God. Perhaps you always intended to do more service for others. You started with the best of inten ons. Maybe even started a collec on but its s ll si ng in a pile or in a box somewhere. Fall and winter are one of the mes when service to others is needed the most. (We will be having two more Works of Mercy days in the coming months.) How will you resolve to do be er and serve others? God created you and me with talents and abili es so that we can use them for his glory and his purposes, not our own. Taking the fresh start God has given us involves a resolve to be used by him. Like a golfer ge ng a “do-over” and determining to do be er, we some mes need to set aside me when we would normally focus on ourselves and focus on others. How will you use your Mulligan today? Have a great week! Andrea Bonsan Director of Family Faith Forma on
