The 32nd Sunday In Ordinary Time

Jesus told his disciples this parable: "The Kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones, when taking their

lamps, brought no oil with them, but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps.

In the Gospel today, we hear Jesus tell one of His most famous and beautiful parables: the Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins, or the Parable of the Ten Virgins. Jesus told his disciples this parable: "The Kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them, but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps. Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight, there was a cry, 'Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!' Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' But

the wise ones replied, 'No, for there may not be enough for us and you. Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.” The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins is full of symbolism. First, we have the bridegroom and the bride. The Bridegroom represents Christ. The Bride is represented by ten virgins, who symbolize the Church. Ten was an important number to the Jews and represents an indefinite multitude. Virginity reminds us that the Church is the innocent and spotless bride being prepared for a permanent union with Christ at his second coming. All ten were preparing for the nuptial celebration, but only half of them did it well and entered into the nuptial banquet. Light is a very important symbol in this parable as well. What is the difference between the five wise virgins and the five foolish virgins? The five wise virgins had enough oil to keep their lamps lit. Light symbolizes our faith. The five wise virgins kept their light of faith burning, while the five foolish virgins let the light of their faith go out. All of us received the light of Christ at our Baptism, but how well do we keep this light of Christ burning in our life? Receiving the light of Christ at our Baptism is only the beginning. Yet, for most Catholics we treat it as the end. Our task in life is to keep the light of faith burning brightly for the rest of our lives. This is where the virgins themselves to be either wise or foolish. All ten virgins have the light of faith, but only five were be able to keep the light! How well do keep the light of faith burning in our lives? In the lives of our children? Not well. Recently, I read an article about Jean Twenge’s new book iGen. A professor of psychology at San Diego State University, Dr. Twenge has been, for years, studying trends among young Americans, and her most recent book focuses on the generation born between 1995 and 2012. These young people have never known life without an iPhone or iPad, so Twenge calls this generation the iGen. Dr. Twenge’s book and study reveals that this generation Americans are the least religious generation in America’s history. As recently as the 1980s, 90% of high school seniors identified with a religious group. Among iGen’ers, the figures are now around 65% and falling. Religious practice is even more attenuated: only 28% of twelfth graders attended services in 2015, whereas the number was 40% in 1976. Whereas even twenty years ago, the overwhelming number of Americans, including youngsters, believed in God, now fully one third of 18 to 24 year olds say that they don’t believe. As late as 2004, 84% of young adults said that they regularly prayed; by 2016, fully one fourth of that same age cohort said that they never pray. Parents and grandparents, what are you doing? Sounds like Jesus isn’t telling a fictional story in today’s Gospel, but He’s describing reality. At the end of October, we repaved all of our parking lots with a new surface of asphalt. Our parking lot no longer looks like the surface of the moon! Pictures of this project are in today’s bulletin. Due to early deadlines, I am writing this two weeks before you are reading it, so we could not include it earlier. Your contributions have enabled us to make much safety improvements to our parish this year, with new parking lot and new driveway to church, and beautification to our campus with the addition of our St. Joseph Grotto. En el Evangelio de hoy, escuchamos a Jesús contar una de sus parábolas más famosas y bellas: la parábola de las jovenes previsoras ylas descuidadas, o la parábola de las diez jovenes. Jesús les dijo a sus discípulos esta parábola: "El Reino de los cielos será como diez jovenes que tomaron sus lámparas y salieron a recibir al novio. Cinco de ellas eran previsoras y cinco descuidadas. Las descuidadas, al tomar sus lámparas, no trajeron nada de aceite con ellas, pero las previsoras trajeron frascos de aceite con sus lámparas. Como el novio se demoró mucho, todas se adormilaron y se durmieron. A medianoche, se oyó un grito: "¡He aquí, el novio! ¡Salid a recibirlo! ' Entonces todas esas jovenes se levantaron y recortaron sus lámparas. Las descuidadas dijeron a las previsoras: "Dennos un poco de su aceite, porque nuestras lámparas se están

apagando". Pero las previsoras respondieron: "No, porque no va a alcanzar suficiente para ustedes y para nosotras. Vayan mejor a donde lo venden y cómprenlo". La parábola de las jovenes provisoras y las descuidadas está llena de simbolismo. Primero, tenemos al novio y la novia. El novio representa a Cristo La Novia está representada por diez jovenes, que simbolizan a la Iglesia. Diez era un número importante para los judíos y representa una multitud indefinida. La virginidad nos recuerda que la Iglesia es la novia inocente e inmaculada que se está preparando para una unión permanente con Cristo en su segunda venida. Las diez se estaban preparando para la celebración nupcial, pero solo la mitad lo hizo bien y entró en el banquete nupcial. La luz es un símbolo muy importante en esta parábola también. ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre las cinco jovenes provisoras y las cinco descuidadas? W dzisiejszej Ewangelii, Jezus opowiada uczniom jedną ze Swoich najpiękniejszych przypowieści: tę o pannach roztropnych i nierozsądnych. Pan powiedział: „Wtedy podobne będzie królestwo niebieskie do dziesięciu panien, które wzięły swoje lampy i wyszły na spotkanie pana młodego. Pięć z nich było nierozsądnych, a pięć roztropnych. Nierozsądne wzięły lampy, ale nie wzięły z sobą oliwy. Roztropne zaś razem z lampami zabrały również oliwę w naczyniach. Gdy się pan młody opóźniał, zmorzone snem wszystkie zasnęły. Lecz o północy rozległo się wołanie: Pan młody idzie, wyjdźcie mu na spotkanie! Wtedy powstały wszystkie owe panny i opatrzyły swe lampy. A nierozsądne rzekły do roztropnych: Użyczcie nam swej oliwy, bo nasze lampy gasną. Odpowiedziały roztropne: Mogłoby i nam, i wam nie wystarczyć. Idźcie raczej do

sprzedających i kupcie sobie!” Ta przypowieść przesiąknięta jest symbolizmem. Po pierwsze: Państwo Młodzi. Pan Młody to Chrystus, zaś panna młoda to Kościół, tu przedstawiony pod postacią dziesięciu dziewic. „10” była dla Żydów ważną liczbą, reprezentującą nieskończoną wielość. Dziewictwo uświadamia nam, iż Kościół jest niewinną i nieskalaną panną młodą, przygotowującą się do pełnego zjednoczenia z Chrystusem w czasie Jego Drugiego Przyjścia. Wszystkie panny przygotowywały się do uczty weselnej, ale tylko połowa z nich robiła to prawidłowo i została wpuszczona na przyjęcie. Kolejnym istotnym symbolem jest tu światło. Czym różnią się panny roztropne od nierozsądnych? Te pierwsze wzięły ze sobą na tyle oliwy, aby ich lampy nie zgasły. Światło symbolizuje naszą wiarę. Panny roztropne utrzymały jasne światło własnej wiary, tymczasem panny nierozsądne pozwoliły, aby światło ich wiary zgasło. Każdy z nas na Chrzcie Świętym otrzymał światło Chrystusa, ale czy dbamy o to, aby ono nie zgasło? Chrzest to dla nas tylko początek. Większość z nas traktuje to jednak jako coś wystarczającego. Najważniejszym naszym zadaniem jest utrzymywanie płomienia naszej wiary przez całe życie. Tu ważny jest przykład panien z przypowieści – pięć z nich zdołało utrzymać płomień wiary, pozostałe pozwoliły mu zgasnąć! A my jak dobrze dbamy o światło naszej wiary na co dzień? Okazuje się, że niezbyt dobrze. Czytałem ostatnio artykuł na temat nowej książki autorstwa doktor Jean Twenge, pod tytułem „iGen”. Autorka jest profesorem psychologii na Uniwersytecie Stanowym w San Diego, od lat badającym aktualne trendy wśród młodych Amerykanów. Tematem jej najnowszej książki jest pokolenie urodzone w latach 1995-2012. Ci młodzi ludzie nie znają życia bez iPhone'ów czy iPadów, dlatego profesor Twenge nazywa ich „pokoleniem iGen”. Badania doktor Twenge dowodzą, iż to pokolenie Amerykanów jest najmniej religijne w całej historii Stanów Zjednoczonych. W latach 80-tych XX wieku, z konkretną wiarą utożsamiało się aż 90% absolwentów szkół średnich. Współcześnie, taką przynależność religijną deklaruje około 65% osób z „pokolenia iGen”. Jeszcze mniej jest osób faktycznie praktykujących – w 2015 roku, tylko 28% uczniów podstawówki uczęszczało na Mszę Świętą, w porównaniu z 40% w 1976 roku. Jeszcze 20 lat temu, wiarę w Boga deklarowała większość Amerykanów, włącznie z młodzieżą. Teraz z kolei, aż 1/3 młodych ludzi w wieku 18-25 lat twierdzi, że w Niego nie wierzy. W roku 2004, 84% młodzieży przyznawało się do codziennej modlitwy. Teraz wszakże, aż ¼ tej samej grupy wiekowej twierdzi, że nie modli się wcale. Rodzice i dziadkowie: co Wy robicie? Wydaje się, że Jezus dzisiaj wcale nie opowiada fikcyjnej historii, lecz opisuje rzeczywistość. Pod koniec października, odświeżyliśmy całą przestrzeń parkingową wokół kościoła, nakładając świeżą warstwę asfaltu. Nasz parking nie przypomina już powierzchni Księżyca! Cały ten projekt możecie zobaczyć na zdjęciach w dzisiejszym biuletynie. Przepraszam, że nie mogliśmy zamieścić ich wcześniej. Ze względu na wcześniejszy termin u wydawcy, piszę niniejsze słowa dwa tygodnie przed tym, zanim trafią w Wasze ręce. Bóg Zapłać wszystkim parafianom, którzy wsparli kampanię „Nauczać, kim jest Chrystus”. Dzięki Waszemu wsparciu, dokonaliśmy w tym roku znaczących napraw i ulepszeń na terenie całej parafii, MIĘDY INNYMI: nowy asfalt na parkingu, nowy podjazd, Grota św. Józefa. Bóg Zapłać za Wasze wsparcie. Staramy się dobrze gospodarować Waszymi darami. Chcemy w przyszłości stale ulepszać naszą parafię, nie dokonamy tego bez Waszej pomocy. Pamiętajcie, aby codziennie odmawiać modlitwę różańcową, zwłaszcza za dusze czyśćcowe. Święta Maryjo, Matko Nieustającej Pomocy, miej nas zawsze w Swojej opiece. Święty Józefie, módl się za nami. Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi!

End of Trimester - On Friday we reached the end of our First Trimester. Report Cards will go home with the children on Thursday, November 16. As is customary with the First Trimester we will hold Parent –Teacher Conferences on Tuesday, November, 21.

Confirmation Enrollment - Today, at the 9:30 a.m. Mass we are also celebrating the enrollment of our Confirmation Class for 2018. This year is a little more special for me than in the past as not only will I have a part with the young people in our school, I am the Catechist for our parish’s high school group. It has been years since I work with a group of high school students in preparing for Confirmation and I am finding it very rewarding. In working with our eighth graders and this small group of high schoolers I am very excited to see their development as we move through the preparation process of completing the Sacraments of Initiation. I feel very confident that our 2018 Confirmation Class will continue their faith journey long after Confirmation and the Catholic Church in Chicago will be in good hands. Altar Servers – As you will have noticed we have a new group of Altar Servers. While they have all been trained, experience in serving Mass is what is needed. I am asking for your help in encouraging our Altar Servers for the job they do in assisting at the liturgies. We are working hard with are experienced servers to renew their commitment to service so we can assure there are altar servers at every Mass. Finally, I would like to thank all who participated in our Home Run Inn Fundraiser. We don’t have the totals but have been told it was very successful. Thank you and have a great week! God Bless.
