Today is Passion (Palm) Sunday, and this day marks the beginning of Holy Week, the holiest week of the Church’s year. In Holy Week, we participate in Christ’s Passion, death, and Resurrection. It’s easy for us to want to jump straight to Easter, but the path to the Resurrection goes through the cross. The whole point and focus of the Incarnation of Christ is the death of Christ. God becomes man in order to die. Why? St Paul tells us that “the wages of sin is death” (Rom 6:23). In the paradox of the great Paschal Mystery, God, who cannot by His divine nature die, dies a real death, and is buried in a tomb, assuming the consequence of our sin and taking our place, even unto death. Laying Jesus in the Tomb is the 14th Station of the Stations of the Cross. When we pray the Stations of the Cross, it seems that we often like to rush through this final station, and focus our attention on something other than death. Yet, Christ’s death forces us to look at death, and should help us to prepare for our own death. To help us reflect on Christ’s death, and our own death and mortality, I have chosen two aids.
The first aid comes from the German artist Johann Koerbecke (1410-1491). The main work of Koerbecke is the altarpiece of Marienfeld, which comes from the high altar of the Marienfeld Cistercian Abbey, around 1457. The Marienfeld Altar of 1457 was composed of 16 picture panels. The 16 panels were dispersed after the dissolution of the monastery in 1803, and were scattered around the world. Six of the panels are exhibited in Münster, Germany. Nine other panels are on exhibit in Landesmuseum, Moscow, Berlin, Avignon, Krakow, Chicago, Nuremberg, Washington, and Madrid. One panel is lost.
To help us reflect on the death of Christ, I have selected the Entombment by Johann Koerbecke. In this panel we see the dead Body of Jesus being laid in a large, diagonal, stone tomb by three men, while a Sorrowful Blessed Mother kisses her Son on the cheek. St. John stands above the Sorrowful Mother, and we also see four faithful women weeping at Jesus’ tomb, one of whom is kissing Jesus’ pierced hand. It is sad to see Mary full of sorrows tenderly kissing her deceased son on his face. Perhaps, this is one reason why we don’t like to linger long at this station. It is sad and heartbreaking to watch a mother mourn the death of a child. It is even more heart wrenching to see Mary grieving the death of Son Jesus. Images seem to express feeling straight to the heart.
The second aid I have selected, to help us meditate on Christ’s death and our human death, comes from the Catholic author and mystic Adrienne von Speyr, particularly from her book The Mystery of Death. von Speyr writes that in death's mirror man recognizes how sinful he is, but in this whole dimension of punishment, he should also see the Father's solicitous care for man. We are presented with a twofold contemplation of death: we see ourselves dying as sinners, punished by death for our sins, but at the same time, we are privileged to know that our death is kept safe in the Son's death, that it shares in the work effected by the Son's death, and that, therefore, together with him, it is going to meet the Resurrection. Thus, its bitterness becomes blessedness. Yet, the bitter side is not simply identical with the blissful side; the two are not confused. The Christian should not be surprised by death nor even by the thought of death, for his whole life is a diligent preparation for death. All that he does in this regard rests on grace, for the Christian could not fight unless Christ, the Risen One, were living in Him. It is the Lord's death that helps him die his Christian death. Indeed, it so incorporates him into the Lord's dying that the Christian can suffer "what is lacking in Christ's afflictions." The death of each individual sinner has to point to the Lord's death and is vanquished in it. The mystery of the communion of saints in the Church has a parallel in this communion in the Lord of the deaths of all sinners. In reality no one dies his own death, for the death he is to die is swallowed up in the Lord's death. In the Lord's earthly life, all his fruitfulness is summoned up at the cross with a view to his death; since his Incarnation signifies fellowship with us, we too, within the Church and together with him, may gather up our Christian willing and hoping with a view to his cross. This means that our death, whatever form it may take, is to be seen as the final concentration of our surrender to God.
Come and pray with us in church this Holy Week. May our Blessed Mother, Our Lady of Sorrows, help us with her maternal care and may St. Joseph pray for us.

Hoy es el Domingo de la Pasión y este día marca el comienzo de la Semana Santa, la semana más sagrada del año de la Iglesia. En la Semana Santa, participamos en la Pasión de Cristo, la muerte y la Resurrección. Es fácil para nosotros ir directamente a la Pascua, pero el camino a la Resurrección pasa por la cruz. Todo el punto y enfoque de la Encarnación de Cristo es la muerte de Cristo. Dios se convierte en hombre para morir. ¿Por qué? San Pablo nos dice que "la consequencia del pecado es la muerte" (Romanos 6:23). En la paradoja del gran Misterio Pascual, Dios, que no puede morir por su naturaleza divina, muere una muerte real y es sepultado en una tumba, asumiendo la consecuencia de nuestro pecado y tomando nuestro lugar, hasta la muerte. En la vida terrenal del Señor, toda su fecundidad es convocada en la cruz con vistas a su muerte; ya que su Encarnación significa compañerismo con nosotros, nosotros también, dentro de la Iglesia y junto con él, podemos reunir a nuestro cristiano dispuesto y esperando con vistas a su cruz. Esto significa que nuestra muerte, cualquiera que sea su forma, debe ser vista como la concentración final de nuestra rendición a Dios. Vengan y oren con nosotros en la iglesia esta Semana Santa. Que nuestra Madre Santísima, Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, nos ayude con su cuidado materno y que San José ore por nosotros. ¡Vivat Jesús! ¡Viva Jesús!

Przypada dzisiaj Niedziela Palmowa. Jest to początek Wielkiego Tygodnia – najświętszego okresu w całym roku liturgicznym. W Wielkim Tygodniu mamy udział w Męce, śmierci oraz zmartwychwstaniu Chrystusa. Łatwo jest nam przejść od razu do obchodów Wielkanocy; pamiętajmy jednak, że droga do Zmartwychwstania zawsze wiedzie przez Krzyż. Wcielenie Chrystusa zapowiada Jego śmierć. Bóg staje się Człowiekiem po to, aby umrzeć. Ale dlaczego? Święty Paweł w swoim Liście do Rzymian (6:23) pisze: „Albowiem zapłatą za grzech jest śmierć”. Widzimy tu swoisty paradoks Misterium Paschalnego – Bóg, Który ze względu na Swoją naturę jest nieśmiertelny, ponosi śmierć i zostaje pochowany, biorąc na Siebie konsekwencje naszych grzechów. Czternastą Stacją Drogi Krzyżowej jest złożenie Jezusa do grobu. Często ccemy jak najszybciej minąć tę ostatnią Stację i skupić się na czymś innym niż śmierć. Ale śmierć Chrystusa przygotowuje na nasze własne
odejście. W ramach naszych rozważań na ten temat, wybrałem dwie rzeczy. Pierwsza rzecz to ołtarz z Marienfeld – dzieło XV-wiecznego niemieckiego artysty, Johanna Koerbecke'a. Ołtarz z Marienfeld pochodzi z 1457 roku i stanowi część głównego ołtarza opactwa cystersów w Marienfeld. Oryginalnie, owy ołtarz składał się z 16 paneli przedstawiających różne sceny biblijne. Kiedy opactwo rozwiązano w 1803, wszystkie panele wywieziono w różne miejsca na świecie. Jeden z nich zaginął. Sześć innych znajduje się na wystawie w niemieckim Münster. Resztę można podziwiać w Landesmuseum, Moskwie, Berlinie, Awinionie, Krakowie, Chicago, Waszyngtonie, Norymberdze i Madrycie. Spośród tych paneli wybrałem dla Was jeden zatytułowany: „Złożenie do grobu”. Widzimy tu trzech mężczyzn składających martwe Ciało Jezusa do dużego, kamiennego grobu, oraz Jego Bolejącą Matkę, całującą policzek Syna. Nad Maryją stoi święty Jan. Poza tym widzimy cztery kobiety płaczące przy Grobie Pańskim, z których jedna całuje Jego przebitą gwoździem dłoń. Zapewne dlatego nie lubimy tej Stacji, gdyż czujemy smutek, patrząc na zrozpaczoną Matkę Bożą całującą Jezusa. Takie obrazy zdają się nas trafiać prosto w serce. Drugą rzeczą, jaką wybrałem w ramach dzisiejszych rozmyślań na temat śmierci Chrystusa oraz naszej własnej śmiertelności, jest dzieło pod tytułem: „Tajemnica śmierci”, autorstwa szwajcarskiej mistyczki i stygmatyczki Adrienne von Speyr. Autorka pisze, iż człowiek w pełni uświadamia sobie swoją grzeszność dopiero w obliczu śmierci. W całym cierpieniu związanym ze śmiercią nie wolno nam zapomnieć o tym, iż Bóg nieustannie się o nas troszczy. Mamy świadomość, że umieramy grzeszni, że karą nasze winy jest śmierć. Z drugiej jednak strony dobrze wiemy, że umieramy bezpieczni dzięki Chrystusowi, który już śmierć przezwyciężył. Wiemy, że razem z Synem Bożym będziemy mieć udział w Zmartwychwstaniu. Dlatego nasza śmierć staje się czymś błogosławionym. Ani śmierć, ani nawet sama myśl o niej, nie powinna być dla prawdziwego chrześcijanina czymś zaskakującym, albowiem przygotowujemy się do niej przez całe życie. Wszystko, co w związku z tym robimy, ma swoje źródło w Łasce Bożej. Chrześcijanin nie mógłby przecież walczyć, gdyby nie nosił w sercu Zmartwychwstałego. Męka oraz śmierć Jezusa pomaga nam godnie mierzyć się z własną śmiertelnością. Nasza śmierć tak bardzo jednoczy nas ze śmiercią Chrystusa, iż chrześcijanin na łożu śmierci „doświadczyć może tego, czego brak w Męce Pańskiej”. Śmierć każdego grzesznika winna wskazywać na śmierć Jezusa. Tajemnica „świętych obcowania” ma swój odpowiednik w obcowaniu umierającego z Panem. Żaden człowiek tak naprawdę nie umiera własną śmiercią, bowiem każda śmierć łączy się ze śmiercią Chrystusa. Punktem odniesienia całej ziemskiej działalności Jezusa była Jego śmierć na Krzyżu. Jako że jesteśmy z Nim złączeni w Kościele, powinien to być punkt odniesienia również dla nas. To zaś oznacza, że własną śmierć (niezależnie od tego, jaka ona będzie) mamy postrzegać jako ostateczną formę oddania się Bogu. W tym Wielkim Tygodniu, zapraszam wszystkich do kościoła na wspólną modlitwę. Święta Maryjo Rozwiązująca Węzły, miej nas zawsze w Swej opiece. Święty Józefie, módl się za nami.

Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery.
Lunch follows at the famous MADERS RESTAURANT, serving authentic German cuisine since 1902. A tour of the
restaurant follows lunch.
Finally, before leaving Wisconsin, the group will stop Kenosha at the MARS CHEESE CASTLE.
The bus leaves at 8 a.m. and returns at 5 p.m. to
the Foran Funeral Home parking lot, 7300 W. Archer Ave. The cost is $46 per person, which
includes the tour and lunch.

Giving the training will be Dr. Mary Amore, who holds a Doctor of Ministry in Liturgy and a Masters of Arts in Pastoral Studies from Catholic Theological Union. She is the executive director of Mayslake Ministries in Lombard, as well an author.

The upcoming tutor training workshop will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 28 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 29. Tutors will help adults learn English at the center, 3540 S. Hermitage Ave., Chicago. Tutors, who volunteer for 90 minutes a week one-on-one, do not have to know another language. All tutoring is done in English. St. Laurence High School will be celebrating its annual Deceased Alumni Memorial Mass at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 29 in the school’s library, 5556 W. 77th St., Burbank (77th Street and Central Ave). The Mass, which remembers more than 630 students and graduates of the school who have passed onto eternal life, will be celebrated by longtime school chaplain, Fr. Norm Trela. It will fulfill the Sunday obligation. There will be a wreath-laying ceremony at the deceased alumni moment on the school grounds, weather permitting. A small reception will follow. ~~~~~~~~~~ St. Xavier University and Vicariate V will present screenings of “Full of Grace,” which is the story of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 27 in the St. Xavier University McDonough Chapel, 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago. “Full of Grace” begins 10 years after Christ’s resurrection. The film sheds light on a critical moment in the history of Christianity. Mary, the mother of Jesus, quietly awaits the return of Peter, whom Jesus asked to lead the Christian people. It tells of Peter’s travels and trials during those 10 years and Mary recalls the incredible mystery of her life with Jesus. “Full of Grace” Executive Producer Eric Groth will lead prayer and reflection. He will also share stories from his experience producing the film. Groth also is president and executive producer of Outside da Box, which produced “Full of Grace.”
The Ladies of the Rosary are urging everyone to start their spring cleaning. It’s time to get into those closets and pull out all those old clothes shoes, scarves and whatever is in there that hasn’t been worn in a long time. The St. Joseph Ladies of the Rosary will be holding their annual garage sale on Friday, July 21 and Saturday, July 22. Mark your cal-endars and details will follow at a later date.

TEXAS HOLD ‘EM TOURNAMENT
The St. Joseph School Chess Club Par-ents Association is hosting a Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament from 6:30 p.m. until Midnight, Saturday, April 29 in St. Joseph School Centennial Hall, 5641 S. 73rd Ave. Doors open at 6 p.m. The cost is $100 before Saturday, April 1 and $120 at the door. There will be unlimited rebuys for $20 for the first hour. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place. There will also be a 50/50 raffle. Seating is limited. LADIES OF THE ROSARY NEWS BEADS ... Monthly Mass The Ladies of the Rosary gather on the first Sunday of the month at the 7:30 a.m. Mass to attend Mass as a group. All ladies of the parish are invited to attend and celebrate with the group.
