Hello! Thank you for taking the time to read this column. I know we all have very busy lives. This time of year parents are busy getting youth to various practices. It's exciting to watch their development and their efforts in the sports they have chosen. Sports have a lot of great characteristics: team building, trust, fairness, looking for and developing the best in each indi-vidual, and so on. In fact, sports as an example was chosen by Saint Paul to illustrate how Catholic Christians should live their daily lives. Running was a popular sport in his day as in ours, and in 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 he illustrates several points you and I should keep in mind as we help our youth become the best spiritual athletes they can be. We are going to discuss verses 24 and 25 this column, and the other two verses next time. REMEMBER: parents are the primary spiritual coaches according to Church teaching : Lumen Gentium (Dogmatic Con-stitution on the Church : “11. The family is, so to speak, the domestic church. In it parents should, by their word and example, be the first preachers of the faith to their children; they should encourage them in the vocation which is proper to each of them, fostering with special care a vocation to a sacred state.” Surely you know that many runners take part in a race, but only one of them wins the prize. Run, then, in such a way as to win the prize. (vs. 24) Running a race is difficult, and the prize only goes to one person. Heaven, or not heaven. How are your youth running spiritually speaking? Do they have the winning attitude? How do they feel about attending Mass every Sunday as a family? How about praying together at least once a day? Is Bible reading something they enjoy or dread? What could you do as their coach to help them become better Catholics? Set a good example! When it comes to our eternal salvation, it’s not, “those who can’t do, teach!” We have to be a good model of the type of spiritual running we want to encourage in them. If we tell them how important a spiritu-al routine is but we don’t do it ourselves, how will they trust us to coach them? Every athlete in training submits to strict discipline, in order to be crowned with a wreath that will not last; but we do it for one that will last forever. (vs. 25) What kind of a winning coach would say “it’s ok to miss practice...once in a while?” No, the best coaches look for the greatness in their athletes and PUSH them from time to time! Why? BECAUSE WINNING IS IMPORTANT TO THEM! We all know coaches who aren’t afraid to get tough. Sometimes coaches will tell players to avoid certain foods, eat certain foods, stay away from certain activities, how much sleep to get, even sometimes who to avoid associat-ing with. Wow. That seems like a LOT of control! But our youth submit to that strict discipline because they WANT the prize. If your youth will submit to these instructions from a sports coach for a temporary reward, then don’t be afraid to guide them towards activities and asso-ciations that will reward them with eternal life in happiness! The best coaches know how to be firm but not overbearing. When it comes to spirituality, learn to have balance. Let Jesus be your example, and ask the Holy Spirit to wisely guide you. and the Finance Council that he will be retiring after the first of the year. If
you or someone you know would be interested in a part-time bookkeeping
position (10-15 hours per week), please send a cover letter and resume to
Fr. Windschitl at St. Mary-Holy Cross. Qualifications include: bookkeeping
skills (3-5 years’ experience), computer skills (Microsoft Office [Excel, Word,

The results of our annual October Mass Count are in. You will see them below. Take a look.
We can see that our over-all Mass attendance has held, with a slight decrease. The Latin High
Mass is the only Mass with an increase—-nearly 20%. Recall, that we eliminated one Mass last
year—due to the decline in Mass attendance, so the statistics illustrate that we have not taken
a hit because of it. I wish we could increase to the point of having to add masses—rather than
eliminate them. Come Lord Jesus!
