SIGN SCIENTISTDAWOOD RELM-ONE
WORDS: SEANO | PHOTOS: JOE BRUNOIn 1985, a young boy from Boston was beginning a life-long love affair with style. It was at this point in young Dawood’s life that graffiti became a massive influence and unbeknownst to him, this admiration of graffiti writers like Sly, Wombat, Sick, Target and SPone would ultimately lead him to running his own professional sign painting and printing business called Sign Scientist here in Raleigh .
What seems to be a logical path—graffiti painting to sign painting—is actually quite unique in the graffiti community. It is rare to encounter an artist who manages to carve a path from the creative expression he holds a passion for and lean it into a successful small
business. Dawood has been providing professional sign painting and printing services since 1998 when he began hand painting fluorescent storefront advertisements for car dealers and fast food joints. His business has since grown to provide vehicle wraps, banners, and print media. Never loosing focus, Dawood still finds creative inspiration from his memories of watching graffiti roll by on the rail tracks in Central Sq. however he is firmly grounded as a family man. Dawood optimistically looks to the future, “Later in life, when money isn’t so much of an issue, I’m going on lots of spraycations... and I’ll probably take my kids!”
Hey Dawood? Can we tag along?

THE HELPING HAND MARCHING BAND
WORDS: ERIC TULLIS | PHOTOS: GUILLERMO QUETZALCOATL
There’s neither a manicured football field for the Helping Hand Marching Band to practice on, nor even a single, visible patch of grass, for that matter, but this community show band thrives off of performing in unique environments. In the weekend prior to this particular practice, the band held center-stage at the Raleigh Convention Center in front of over 2,000 science professionals during the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) annual conference. When asked if he preferred events like this or parades, Helping Hand’s drum major of four years, Maurice Carter, responded, “Anywhere. I don’t care.”
As a music-loving teenager in the 1960s, Sylvia Wiggins loved everything about her John R. Hawkins High School marching band in Warrenton, NC, except that no one in it had the same skin complexion as her. “When I got started, years ago, I had a dream,” said Wiggins. “Back then, there were only light-skinned people in bands. That dream said to me that when I grow up, I would have my own band where anybody and everybody could join.” Years later, in 1976, she’d create the
Helping Hand Mission Marching Band, which is comprised of a wide spectrum of children and adults from Raleigh’s low-income communities of color. The band’s headquarters—a brimming compound in Central Raleigh and home to the charitable institution, Helping Hand Mission--is also where Wiggins serves as Executive Director.
These days, the band is as strong as ever. On a late-October evening, more than 50 of the band’s members and the few spectators who wandered in from the busy Rock Quarry Road entrance, have all congregated in Helping Hand’s wide driveway for a weekly practice. Inside, Wiggins’ seemingly routine day as the momma of this whole operation is met with a medley of interruptions: a drummer with an update about his ongoing court case, a man requesting gas money so that he could drive his children to school the next morning, and a woman with an offering in the form of a sandwich bag filled with bite-sized, fatback, pork slivers. With charmed patience, Wiggins fields each request for her time, resources, and advice with assembly line-like efficiency.

Maurice Carter took over the distinguished drum major position four years ago--a year after Helping Hand joined legendary hip-hop group Public Enemy on stage in downtown Raleigh during the inaugural Hopscotch Music Festival. In that same year, a Helping Hands alum, Kornelius Bascombe, was announced as one of eight finalists in Oprah Winfrey’s “Your OWN Show: Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star.”
Bascombe would end up graduating from NCSU, which, like other schools in
the area--especially HBCUs like Shaw, St. Augustine, and NCCU--have their own prestigious marching bands. In comparison, Helping Hands’ uniforms may not look as spiffy, and the band may not have a celebrated music director, but what the band lacks in funding and vanity, it makes up for with sheer enthusiasm and most of all, raw soul. “We play with those schools all of the time,” Wiggins says with a shrug and a laugh. “Man, we ain’t stuntin’ them. We get our groove on, baby.”
Learn more about the Helping Hand Mission @ HelpingHandMission.org and check out the band in full glory at the Christmas Parade on Nov. 22nd.

POWER LINES WITHYAIRON MARTINEZ
INTERVIEW: SABRINA GALLI
Follow the power lines and take a left at the pine trees, maybe then you’ll be lucky enough to have Yairon Martinez include you in his work. His ability to transform a phone interview into poetic diction mirrors his capacity to fuse nature and humanity into art. The Cuban native is a graphic design student at NSCU, presenting his talent to both the school and the internet world. I had the opportunity to talk to him about what he’s working on and where we can find him next.
How and when did you get started as an artist?
Design school first opened my eyes to the interlace of image and messaging-- communication through imagery. I was taking tangent classes, and at the time, I was really into surrealism. It brought out something--- the hidden aspects of realities and the influential nature of perception.
I started producing work daily to start diminishing the gap I felt between the great artists and myself. Whatever you can produce in those 30 minutes is
what you have. You have the ability to be instinctual and you can’t second-guess anything. When you arrive at whatever that product is, you have to think fast. Set a limit. Hold yourself to using one color pallet or a specific amount of time. These projects gave me a coordinate of comparison. I saw work that was amazing and then self-analyzed why my work didn’t look like that. What was missing? These tasks make you completely self-aware of your design choices.
What made you decide to experiment with foliage and power lines? What’s next?
It was during my phase of these daily experiments that I created this double exposure series. I had twenty-four hours with a rented camera and began experimenting with the multiple exposure feature. In terms of my subjects, I took inspiration from what was around me. There are really beautiful pine trees around my house and the power-lines were the only man-made objects that I saw. The two people in the images are myself and my sister.

I am currently a student, graduating from the college of design at NC State. I want to continue these side projects because graphic design rarely gives you enough room for experimentation. I try to continuously push boundaries of what I can produce. I usually like to write poetic text with my work, using both the image-making process and elaboration through language. Attaching a word to an abstraction definitely makes you appreciate what that abstraction is. Anyone can bend it to whatever narrative he or she wants but a subtle hint from the author can definitely make that idea much more concrete.
Where can we find your work? What will you do after you graduate?
My main output is the internet. I love blogging because it creates a visual journal; you’re documenting your own creativity. I can pinpoint when I made a piece and where I was, and then I can see a trajectory of how I’ve grown. Functionality anchors me to design while art can only give you perspective and commentary for a brief moment. I think for now the only place where art and design live together is in editorial design and print- in letting consumers connect visually to an idea. Once we settle for something that doesn’t allow us to create, work gets redundant and monochromatic. I think I will always experiment with image-making because it’s such a perfect outlet.
Keep up with Yairon and check out more of his work at YaironMartinez.com along with Behance.net/yaironmartinez.

ARTIST YOU SHOULD KNOW: DAVID EICHENBERGER
WORDS: SEANO
David Eichenberger is as much a weaver as he is a painter. His illustrative storytelling manages to weave us out of reality and into fantasy so seamlessly that it is often hard to tell which is which. David’s paintings open a door for the viewer allowing them to take a brief vacation from the mundane and enable the mind to get lost in the intricacies of flying chunks of soil, mystical weather vanes and musical mammalian critters.
A current member of the Bonded Llama Studios, David leads the pack when it comes to eclectic Raleigh illustrators. We caught up with David to inquire on what keeps him inspired and his creative process.
“When I need inspiration I’ll go running or ride my bike. Something about the passing scenery helps me think. I also get inspired from long road trips. If it’s for my own projects I get inspired by something I saw or a phrase that I cant shake form my head. For instance, right now I’m slowly working on a series of paintings that are inspired by the nautical term ‘consent bearing’. I will sketch out several thumbnails that are all about 2 inches big then pick my five favorites and develop those into paintings or pen and ink drawings.”
We recommend keeping up with David. You never know what world he may take us to next.

NORTH CAROLINA FIRST IN FLIGHTWORDS: ANTHONY AFTERWIT | PHOTOS: JOE BRUNO
Birds flying south in the beautiful skies of North Carolina were forced to make room for the world’s elite BMX riders and skateboarders last month, The 2014 RedBull Dreamline event held on the Oskar Blues REEB Ranch near Asheville along with the “Get Rad For Ray” charity event presented by Endless Grind was host to the likes of Tony Hawk, Ryan Nyquist, Ben Raybourn, James Foster, Christian Hosoi, Kyle Baldock, Steve Caballero and many others.
The 2014 RedBull Dreamline was imagined by pro rider Anthony Napolitan and realized with an insane course created by master builder Adam Aloise. This is one of the premiere showcases in the BMX dirt competition universe so we
were blessed to witness the best of the best pushing their limits on a course that was absolutely mind-blowing.
Tony Hawk brought the 80’s back to Raleigh’s Marsh Creek Skatepark with the “Get Rad For Ray” fundraiser and he didn’t come alone. Tony and friends celebrated the life and legacy of one of skateboarding’s all-time greats, Wilmington, NC native and member of the infamous Bones Brigade Squad, Ray Underhill.
Oak City Hustle was lucky enough to have our cameras to the sky, capturing the majestic athleticism occupying the North Carolina atmosphere last month. Remember to keep your head up. You never know what (or who) will be flying overhead.

ARTIST YOU SHOULD KNOW:GRIFFIN HART DAVIS
INTERVIEW: RACHEL STEBING
ART
Griffin Hart Davis studied fine art and photography at Brevard College, and has been working with Elon University for the past five years. He uses film for his photographs as he feels something gets lost in the digital translation. His first video production, a music video for Citizen Shade’s “Thank You for Your Time”, can be seen on his website, GriffinHartDavis.com. I spoke with Griffin to explore is style, motivation and what we can expect from him in the near future.
Describe your personal artistic style in your own words.
I love to pull together the abstract elements to create something that’s either thought-provoking or has a story to it. Usually these pieces have something to do with multiple contrasting elements that create an alternate universe. I want my viewer to see my work and have to stop and be emotionally involved from the get-go. On the other side, a lot of my work is pairing up with other artists, mostly musicians and actors. These folks have a craft of their own, and that
craft needs to be visualized. I look at it as compounding art. For example, for a blues musician, we might find more soothing tangible and light elements that are going to suggest the sound of blues to help showcase that person’s work.
Where can we see some of your work?
The majority of my work is platformed on my personal site, www.griffinhartdavis.com. I’m also hoping to set up some gallery showings in the next year, and those will be announced on my site.
What is your favorite production from the past year?
I can’t say that there’s only one. These ideas come into mind and you get really excited about them, but usually I’ve been thinking about them for about three months by the time they make it to my site. There are some that I look back and think “Oh I really love that!” I think “Plaskin Contrast” is one that sticks out to me, that’s on my site. That particular segment was nice because it dealt with simple elements, plastic and skin.

More of the incredible photography work of Griffin can be seen at
GriffinHartDavis.com
Where do you see your art taking you in the future?
In the past year and a half I’ve seen myself growing into more of a director role. I’m making a leap in this point in time to the bigger production side of things, to bigger projects in general. I have this one idea, that’s been in the works for three years. This piece has to do with contrasting elements and wrapping structures in different colors of plastic. One of my ideas is to wrap the Jefferson Pilot building in plastic and take a photo of it so it looks like this element that’s out of place. So you’re obstructing the city and creating this dreamscape that people don’t really know what they’re looking at.
