Here we are in early Autumn already, headed toward the holidays! October is such a beautiful month, with an explo- sion of color, crisp air, and football games. Christmas Baskets & Ornament Raffle

Melanie Wilmhoff

We have had ornaments or baskets turned in by 20 members as of the September meeting. I know several of you

told me you were almost done, but just couldn’t get finished in time to bring to September’s meeting. Believe me

when I tell you I understand but please, please, please make this a priority and bring to the October meeting. Turn-

ing in six (6) hand painted ornaments or painting a raffle basket is a requirement for you to obtain Member in Good

Standing for next year. (There are other requirements you must meet as well. Please refer to the ChaptersStanding

Rules; they are defined under item 7. Item 8 describes the benefits of obtaining Member in Good Standing status.)

The following members brought in ornaments: Joan Bruce, Carol Cole, Kim Kohler and Jean Sanning. You

all did a great job on them! Below is the basket painted by Jo Sharpshair and brought to the September meeting. It

is adorable!

Please contact me for Raffle tickets to sell. I will have them at the next meeting or if you need some sooner, contact

me to make arrangements to get them. Raffle ticket sales are the second largest fundraiser we have for the chapter

so let’s get busy and sell some tickets. The baskets with ornaments will be raffled at the Member Christmas Party

on December 13th.

GCDA SERVICE

Peggy Hermes, Coordinator

Dear GCDA Members,

Thank you sooooo very much for your generosity to the Yellow Ribbon Center and for being gracious and

friendly hostesses!!! You all ROCK!! It was really great to load up Keith Maupin’s van last meeting with

so much STUFF!! Both the conversations and food were sensational! It’s easy being the Service Chair

when chapter members provide such wonderful support!

Our October Meeting is the Official Service Meeting, and

Robert and Candace from Starfire Council of Greater Cin-

cinnati will be attending our meeting. They will stay for

lunch and help paint the rest of the Walker Bags. Please

bring your painting gear and stencils. I will also bring

stencils and plenty of paint. Robert will take the painted

bags with him to distribute to the Residents of the Nursing

Home where he volunteers.

Thanks again for your support. I am so proud to be part

of such a giving chapter!!

Peggy

What is the Starfire Council of Greater Cincinnati?

Starfire is focused on decreasing the social isolation felt

by people with disabilities. The study below was done by

Jack Peeler in the 1990s. He asked 51 people with disa-

bilities, "Who's in your life?"; and the results were this

startling picture of isolation. As you can see, out of all the

people in a person's life, friends and other citizens com-

prised the smallest number by far. That's why at Starfire,

we are challenged to change this picture by helping peo-

ple with disabilities and their families connect to a network

of friends, neighbors, and others in their community.

Working with one person at a time, we believe we can de-

crease people's sense of loneliness, and work toward a

good life.

October Program Report Emily Stamm, VP Programs

The month of September has passed quickly! There have been so many things to do-lots of fall activities, craft show season be-

ginning, fall sports, GCDA activities--makes me think that I better start painting for the holidays!

Our September meeting was a canvas painting class taught by Sandie Tieman. Thank

you so much Sandie, for sharing your talents with us. The class was well attended and

enjoyed by all!

Stephanie Hauser taught a 6-hour seminar on Saturday, September 19. The project,

called “Cat and Company” was a gourd painted with Acrylics. 16 people attended this

second seminar of the year! Thank you to Stephanie for all of the work that was put into

making the class very successful!

Our October meeting will be our Service Project/Painting meeting. We will also paint

our nametags as time permits. Thanks to Peggy Hermes for getting the service project

together for us!

I will be teaching the November class project. Please look for the project information/

registration form in this newsletter. The class is a galvanized steel Christmas ornament

painted with multi-surface acrylics. Please sign up by November 5th.

Thank you for all of your suggestions, help and support in planning our programs. I have

scheduled the monthly programs for 2016. It is wonderful that we have so many members

willing to share their talents with us! Please come to our monthly meetings and take classes

and seminars!

Happy Painting!
