parishioner, we invite you to contact our pastor, Fr. John Dakes at [email protected] or any member of our parish staff at

our registration form or stop by our Welcome Table in the church entry to pick up a Welcome Folder.

~ Father John

Dear Friends, This weekend at the 10:00 AM Mass we are celebrating our second Special Needs Mass. On behalf of the parish I want to welcome our guests with special needs to our church as well as their family members and caregivers. Our parish is happy to have you worshipping with us.

In our gospel for this Sunday it is not a group of Sadducees approaching Jesus in an attempt to trip Him up, instead it is some Pharisees. They approach asking a much debated question: “Which is the greatest commandment of the Law?” In response, Jesus names not one, but two commandments:

“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

By naming two, Jesus is saying what God truly cares about; he is saying what

God is really like, and therefore, how people God draws into relationship with him are to respond to him. They are to imitate the one who called them into relationship.

By pairing these two laws together Jesus says that our love for God is

demonstrated in our love for neighbor, and that our love for neighbor is to work as God’s love works for us, unconditionally, with mercy, compassion, forgiveness. Our behavior towards one another is to mirror God’s own love.

For example, when we approach the altar to receive the Lord’s love in

Communion we are saying that we are in communion with him and with everyone else coming to receive the Lord. It is why Jesus can say elsewhere, “If you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother [or sister] has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother [or sister] and then come offer your gift” (Mt. 5:23-24). Being in loving communion with God and one another truly identifies us as the body of Christ on earth. Loved by God, we are not strangers to one another nor are we to be estranged. Loving our neighbor is equivalent to loving God. Peace and blessings,

Father John

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Jesus the Divine Word Catholic Church

PARISH MINISTRY FAIR FINISHES TODAY Serving the Lord with Gladness

Psalm 100:2

In today’s Gospel Jesus puts before us the two greatest commandments – love of God and love of neighbor. One way to love the God we cannot see is to love the neighbor – serve

the neighbor – we can see through the many service ministries of the parish. Through prayer and discernment each of us has to

undertake the hard work of deciding exactly how to love God and neighbor through the use of our time, talents and treasures.

This weekend the parish is holding the third and final weekend highlighting the parish’s ministries. Tables are located in the Church Narthex with volunteers from the Ministries of the Word (Adult and Youth Faith Formation, Bible

Study, Youth Ministry, Good News Pre-School, Vacation Bible School, Walking with Purpose and more). These volunteers will be ready to answer any questions you may have that you may fully discern how to use the gifts God has given you. After Mass you are invited to spend time visiting the tables, learning the mission

of the ministry so as to make a decision to become involved in one or more ministries for the next year. Ministry Booklets entitled Serving the Lord with

Gladness, distributed last weekend, also contain descriptions of all parish ministries.

Inserted in each booklet is a Ministry Commitment Form. After having spent time visiting ministry tables and reviewing the booklet please complete the form

and sign the pledge to take part in a ministry of the parish for the next year. Next weekend, November 4th and 5th, you are asked to bring the completed

and signed form to Mass with you. After the gifts of bread and wine have been received you will be invited to bring your commitment form to the sanctuary and

place it in one of the baskets provided. Extra Commitment Forms will be available in the church narthex so that every member of every household

(adults and youth) can make their own commitment.
