It was the night before Shabbat Shuva, the Shabbos that occurs between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. I had already thought

about what I might say the following day, and I went to sleep satisfied that I would speak about one of two possible topics.

But then, in the middle of the night, I woke with a start. I had seen myself, up at the Bima, speaking about neither one of those

two topics I had planned to speak about. Instead, I was speaking about Shuva, about returning.

Now this should seem natural for a rabbi to speak about Shuva, about returning, on this special Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah

and Yom Kippur. But this time, it was different. Normally, rabbis speak with their congregations about the need for each

individual to return to God and return to one another. But that's not what my dream was about. Instead, my dream was about us

helping others to do Teshuva, to return to God and to the Jewish community.

So often in Judaism our focus is to be an Or laGoyim, a light to the nations. So often, we speak about doing Tikkun Olam, about

healing the world. So often, we strive to help other peoples, and we forget about our own people. We may forget about the

importance of being a light for our own people and about the need to help our fellow Jews to return to Judaism.

In the Haftarah of Yom Kippur, God calls out, “Clear the way; remove the obstacles from the path of my people.” (Isaiah 57:14)

Can we help clear the way for other Jews to return?

There are so many Jews who are disconnected from Judaism. While there is certainly a need for balance, most Jews in our

society live lives focused on secular goals, rather than the Holy Blessed One and the Jewish community. Perhaps we can help

others find a greater sense of balance so that they can hold both their desires for secular success and their ability to use Judaism

as a path to spiritually connect.

Part of us may feel uncomfortable with the idea of sharing Judaism with others. We certainly don’t like to feel forced or coerced

into religious observance. But it is also true that when we care about something, we share it with others, especially when we

think they might appreciate it. It is also important that we recognize that we are simply creating an opening for fellow Jews to

return home. The rest is up to their desires and abilities at the time.

As always, reaching out should be done with gentleness and with love. Perhaps we could invite someone with us when we come

to shul. Maybe we could invite them for a Shabbos meal. Or perhaps we could simply recommend a Jewish book that we found

inspiring.

This year, let us indeed be a light to the world, but with balance in mind, let us also be a light to our own people. Let us reach

out where we can. Let us work to clear the way. Let us do our best to invite our friends and loved ones back home.

Thank you so much to the many people who helped make this year's High Holiday season so successful, and may we all be

blessed with a very good and sweet new year!

MONTHLY THOUGHTS FROM THE RELIGIOUS COMMITTEE Time to Get Up! Jewish Morning Rituals and Prayers, part 2

As discussed in last month’s column, our first obligation upon waking up in the morning is to say

Modeh ani to thank God for returning our souls to us. However, Jewish tradition tells us that we must also

value our bodies, and thank God for their continued functioning. Therefore, before more formal morning

prayers, the usual practice is to relieve ourselves, followed by a special blessing, known as Asher yatzar

(which is properly said every time we go to the toilet, not just in the morning). This blessing is also said in

synagogue as part of the morning service, so the complete text may be found in any siddur.

Although the ancient rabbis did not understand, in the modern sense, how the body functions, they

were very aware that it was complicated and that things could go wrong. The beginning of Asher yatzar,

therefore, blesses God for constructing our body with wisdom, “creating within it many openings and

passageways” (nkavim nkavim chalulim chalulim - the repetition of the words for openings and passageways is

a way of saying there are many of them). The prayer continues with an expression of a very human fear: “...

should even a single passageway rupture, or a single opening close up, it would no longer be possible to exist.”

Since this apparently has not happened (we did, after all, successfully relieve ourselves), we can say this

prayer, concluding with praise to God, “healer of all flesh, who creates wondrously.”

Having relieved ourselves and said the appropriate blessing, we are almost ready for more formal

prayer. All that we need to do is wash our hands, in the usual way done before a meal (pouring water three

times on each hand from a special two-handled vessel), with the usual blessing, al n’tilat yadaim. (Note that

although we always wash our hands after using the bathroom, we only say the blessing if we are about to pray

or eat.)

Boker tov!

JOIN THE TEN-FOR-TEN CLUB

Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav said: “Nine Tsaddikim (righteous ones) do not make a minyan, but one ordinary person

joining them completes the minyan.” I don’t know how many tsadikkim there are here in Lexington, but we have plenty of

ordinary folks, and it would be wonderful if a few more of us would come to weekday minyan. To help accomplish this, we

have established the Ten-for-Ten Club.

Joining the Ten-for-Ten Club is very simple: all you have to do is commit to attending afternoon minyan ten times

in the next year. There are no big prizes (other than spiritual ones), but those who complete this commitment will be

recognized for their contributions to the OZS community. To join, or for more information, contact Jon Glixon or Lisa at
