Korach
My son is fascinated with the Torah. He is constantly singing, “V’Zot HaTorah – And this is the Torah,” the
song that we sing when the Torah is lifted. He takes his toy Torahs in and out of his toy ark, and marches them
around the house loudly singing the songs of our people.
We just finished the holiday of Shavuot, when we celebrated God’s giving our people the Torah.
In our tradition, the Torah is seen as an incredible gift, a tremendous blessing. The Torah is an expression of
God’s love for us, and as Psalm 119:165 says, “There shall be great peace for those who love Your Torah.”
The Torah not only connects us with the Holy Blessed One, it also connects us with one another. We have
taught it joyously from generation to generation. It binds our generation with our ancestors, and we form a
beautiful link extending back to God’s revelation to our people at Mount Sinai.
Here at OZS, our synagogue motto is: “Learn Torah; live Torah; pass it on with love.”
Our congregation is in love with Torah, and we lovingly pass it on.
It is no surprise that when our congregation moved from downtown to our current location, we lovingly walked
our Torahs the whole way.
Not only did we show our reverence for the Torah, and our appreciation of this holy gift from God, but our care
of the Torah brought our community together, binding us as one as we walked the path together. And every
Shabbat, as we carry the Torah around our beautiful sanctuary, we similarly join together to celebrate the Torah,
and are bound together again as a community.
Perhaps this is part of the meaning of Psalm 19:8, when it says, “The Torah of God is perfect, reviving the soul.”
The beautiful connections that we make with one another do indeed help to revive our souls.
The incredible Kippah Project, displayed above our social hall stage, visually manifests the tremendous joy our
community has shared as we celebrated our many joyous occasions together. This connection, this community,
this joy, with God’s Torah as its base, has a way of reviving our souls.
And as we continue our journey together, may we be blessed with a deepening of our study of Torah, with a
strengthening of our connections with our community, and with a new awakening to the blessings that the Holy
Blessed One brings into our lives.

9:00PM at OZS
I’m of an age where that time seems moments ago. I
remember walking that day with Michael and children in
tow. We had only been in Lexington for a couple of years
and were new to the synagogue. Andrew was five years old,
Jonathan 2 ½; we pushed our one year old daughter Becky in
an umbrella stroller. I remember that Joe and Ricki
Rosenberg were in similar straits, with little kids. About 75
members of the congregation walked down Maxwell Street
to where the road segued to High Street, then Tates Creek
Road. The group winded along Alumni Drive, walked over
the little bridge next to the creek and arrived at the parking
lot of the new building. Lagging far behind the others, our
family was the very last to arrive, exhausted but victorious.
In the back corner of the social hall, a framed photo montage commemorates the transfer of the Torahs from the
old synagogue on Maxwell Street to our current location. Have a look at it next time you are in the social hall.
The walk took place on May 10, 1987.
Looking back, I’m grateful that we were present for a highlight in OZS’s history. Over the years, each of our children
has had a wonderful Jewish education at OZS, which they get to take with them wherever they may go in their adult
lives. Bricks and mortar are important, but the learning and human connections are the real strength of their heritage
here.
It is a blessing that our family has been able to remain engaged and active in the life of the synagogue through the
years. We are so lucky to be here in this vibrant congregation. I know that so many of you feel the same way.
This month, as noted on the cover of the bulletin, we are “Walking Forward,” commemorating the anniversary of that
historic walk by gathering together for a celebratory dinner at congregant homes, and later at Portofino’s for dessert.
You won’t want to miss this special event, and we won’t want to miss you. Please RSVP and come prepared to
enjoy a special time with your OZS family.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
B’shalom,
Kathy

MONTHLY THOUGHTS FROM THE RELIGIOUS COMMITTEE
Kabbalat Shabbat: The Friday Night Synagogue Service, part 8
As at every Ma’ariv service, the Friday night Amidah is only said individually, without a repetition (this is
done to differentiate it from the other services, Shacharit, Minchah, and Musaf, which, unlike Ma’ariv,
correspond to sacrifices in the ancient Temple). The opening three blessings (for our ancestors, for God’s
saving power, and for God’s holiness) are the same as at every other service.
The thirteen petitions in the middle of the weekday Amidah, however, are replaced here with a single extended
one about the holiness of Shabbat. This includes the passage from Genesis also recited at the Friday night
Kiddush, the Va-y’khulu, which describes God’s day of rest after the Creation, and a prayer that we might be
made holy through the mitzvot, gladdened by God’s goodness, and able to find true rest on Shabbat. The final
blessing praises God for making Shabbat holy. The Amidah then concludes with the usual final three blessings
(for the restoration of Zion, in gratitude for blessings, and for peace).
Although, as mentioned above, there is never a full repetition of a Ma’ariv amidah, we want to make the
Friday evening one special, so the individual amidah is followed by a single extra blessing that summarizes the
themes of the main prayer. This begins by the leader chanting a version of the usual opening blessing, with a
different conclusion, “God, creator of heaven and earth.” At this point, the congregation joins in, singing
Magen avot, repeating the themes of our ancestors, God’s saving power, God’s holiness, and the holiness of
Shabbat. This is sung to one of the oldest melodies we use, one that even gives its name to one of the
traditional modes of synagogue chanting: the Magen avot mode. These themes are then continued with the
Eloheinu veilohei avoteinu, which completes the Amidah, followed, as always, if there is a minyan, by the
Kaddish shalem.
Shabbat shalom!
