“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; who comforts us in all our afiction so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any afiction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 Discouragement is a thief. It steals energy, enthusiasm, joy, peace and contentment. Discouragement never goes anywhere without his friends: fatigue, hopelessness, despair, self-pity, depression, doubt, and bitterness. Discouragement is dissatisfaction with the past, distaste for the present, and distrust of the future. It is unawareness of the presence of God, unconcern for the needs of our fellow man, and unbelief in the promises of His Word. When we forget our blessings and choose instead focus on our problems that is when discouragement begins to take hold. Instead, what we need is encouragement. Seems easy enough, doesn’t it? If you are sad, choose to be happy instead. Unfortunately, it never tends to be that simple. There is not a switch for happiness that we can turn on and off at will. Instead, we humans must ght against these thoughts and feelings. To combat these difculties, we must look to God for encouragement for ourselves, and in turn become encouragement for others. Keeping our eyes on Jesus is the best way to be encouraged. In Him, we can have comfort, peace and encouragement. We need the knowledge that the Lord knows our troubles and that He has great concern and compassion for us. That is a testament of our faith and trust in Him. The best way to show your love is to spread that faith and trust, that concern and compassion, that encouragement to your family and your friends, your neighbors, and yes, even your enemies. Use your times of struggle to help others who are struggling. Be a comfort to one another just a He is a comfort to you. Glorify Him and uplift Him by uplifting others in turn. Don may be described as “Oklahoma City born, Oklahoma City raised, Oklahoma City educated, Oklahoma City loved and Oklahoma City employed.” But these terms may be just the beginning of becoming acquainted with this interesting, gifted, and busy man and member of the Baptist Village of Oklahoma City community - Don Baxter.

Don’s education (both formal and life experiences along the way) have helped prepare him for this phase of his life. A lifetime of Baptist life has led him along the entire path. He reported that he thought perhaps his name was added to the Cradle Roll on the day he was born. (For any readers not familiar with this term, Cradle Roll was a listing of infants too young to add to Sunday School attendance rolls.)

He grew up in Trinity Baptist Church where his Mother worked as the church secretary and sometimes as fi nancial secretary. His dad was a charter member of that church and taught Sunday school, so it was a natural progression of his life that Don became a Christian and was baptized at age nine. As of 2018, he has been a Christian for 76 years. After graduating from high school, he continued his education by going to Oklahoma Baptist University (OBU) and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. While at OBU, he sang with the widely known “Bison Glee Club.”

Don married Loritta on February 15, 1957 and they celebrated 55 years together. They welcomed a baby girl and a baby boy to their family. Kathy and Jeffrey live in Oklahoma City and see Don each week for family dinners out in the larger community. This “larger community” has been widely bless-ed by his training, as he has served on music faculties at Oklahoma State University for 13 years and a Pentecostal college. Prior to that, Don served for 15 years as a minister of education and music in several churches. Kerrville was blessed with his leadership during his fi ve years on their staff. Following that, he served part-time as music director in many other churches.

Baptist Village benefi ts greatly from Don’s expertise and dedication in planning, training, and leading the choir here in our neighborhood. The choir sings regularly for worship at several venues on campus. During the recent holiday season, they sang at other senior living communities and areas of the city.

Don may be best known as the leader of the choir at Baptist Village, and that is a very important contribution to the Village. But some of us remember most vividly an occasion when he heard a loud noise in his bedroom. Rushing in to see what was happening, he was faced with about the front half of an automobile sitting where his bed had been previously and a scattering of the bricks of the wall! In telling the story, Don took the positive approach by explaining that 1) no one was hurt, and 2) a repair team rapidly made necessary repairs making it possible to safely sleep in his bed.

If you haven’t met this wonderful resident, do so today!
