Dear Cañada Community,

I hope that you had a restful holiday with family and friends and are off to a good start for the spring semester. I want to again extend my heartfelt thanks to all you for the warm welcome you have provided me in my role as Acting President at Cañada College.

It is an honor and privilege to join the Cañada family during this time of transition. Having been in the District for 15 years, I have had the pleasure of working with many of you and have also had the opportunity to learn about the outstanding programs and services available to Cañada students. In addition to the comprehensive programs and services available to students, I have been

very impressed with the many purposeful measures that have been launched to help ensure and increase student retention and success of Cañada students. I realize that these efforts are the result of the creativity, commitment and dedication of the faculty and staff. These efforts, based on an analysis of college data, are also well-aligned with the District’s Strategic Goals.

I want to welcome the new faculty and staff who have joined our college community. Thank you to Erin Moore and Maria Huning for leading, and to Debbie Joy, Doug Hirzel, Sarah Harmon and our facilities team for participating in, last Friday’s new employee orientation.

I hope you were able to attend the excellent Flex Day activities held this past Tuesday. I found the morning sessions on the State of the College and Crisis Management very informative. I believe it’s important that we all have a comprehensive understanding of college enrollment, our budget, and other important key topics, as well as the wide-ranging resources available to help students. And, it goes without saying that is it paramount that we continue to review procedures and practices to ensure the safety of our students, faculty and staff. Thanks to everyone involved in planning, logistics and implementation of these activities: Erin Moore, Debbie Joy, Michael Hoffman, Candice Nance, Jill Hornbeck, Rachel Corrales, Hugo Enciso, John Winchester and ITS staff, Cañada facilities team, Christine Huynh, Jose Garcia, Barbara Bucton, student ambassadors, and all the faculty and staff who volunteered to facilitate workshop sessions.

I also want to take a moment to recognize Vice President Anderson, Vice President Marquez, and Interim Vice President Lopez for their leadership during this time of transition at the college. With their leadership and your support, the college has continued its excellent tradition of serving students and the community.

Please be reminded that Chancellor Galatolo will be here on Monday, January 25 to address the college community. The meeting will be held at 3 p.m. in Building 3, Room 142. I hope you will be able to attend.

As promised, I’m scheduling open office hours to provide you with an opportunity to drop by if you wish. The hours will be on Mondays from 1-2 p.m. and on Thursdays from 2-3 p.m. Other times you will find me walking about the campus.

Have a great semester!

Jennifer

Jacket and Toy Drive Supports Over 100 East Palo Alto & Menlo Park Families

The Cañada College Marketing and Outreach Departments and Ravenswood School District joined forces this holiday season to create the 1st annual Jacket and Toy Drive, benefitting over 100 low income migrant families. More than 150 toys, 20 school backpacks and 35 jackets were collected in the span of three weeks. The donations were collected in partnership with Philz Coffee at four San Mateo County locations: South San Francisco, San Mateo, Palo Alto and Redwood City. Additionally, a huge appreciation shout out to Adolfo Leiva, Director of SparkPoint, who donated 20 backpacks for the children.

On December 18, the Cañada Marketing and Outreach team went to Ravenswood to distribute the toys and jackets. This amazing

event catalyzed the partnership between Cañada College, the East Palo Alto and Menlo Park communities, and Philz Coffee. Graciela Cabrera (Parent and Community Liaison for the Migrant Education program in Ravenswood School District) organized the event to provide all of the families with the donations. The families with farm-related work history have had a challenging time getting connected to educational and community resources. Our newfound partnership plans to provide future educational workshops for the parents and bring more families closer to the Cañada College community.

Graciela states, “I am very excited and very grateful for everyone thinking of the East Palo Alto Community and Migrant Families District program. A million thanks for making all of these children happy!”

Thank you to everyone that donated toys and jackets to the families and helped us to build a new partnership in our community.

Cañada Supports Expansion of Adult Education on the Coast

On Monday, January 11, several members of the Cañada Community celebrated the launch of La Costa Adult School in Half Moon Bay. More than 150 prospective students were in attendance to take advantage of key offerings such as: classes for immigrants, high school diploma or preparation for high school equivalency examination, job training, apprenticeships in business and classes for disabled adults.

Cañada College offers two more levels of ESL, also on Mondays and Wednesdays evenings, and Computer classes on Tuesday evenings, which prepare students to transition to Cañada College. When students successfully complete these courses, they earn the English for the Workforce Award, n Cañada College ESL Department award, which is a college

pathway partially funded by the Silicon Valley Community Foundation.

A special thank you to Gregory Anderson, Anniqua Rana, Jenny Castello, Diana Espinosa Osuna and Mayra Arellano who were in attendance to welcome the students.

Word Jam Spring 2016 Serves More Than 100 Students

During the week of January 11, the Learning Center hosted a group of students who participated in Word Jam. Word Jam is a free, one week, non-credit program for current and in-coming Cañada College students in all levels of English, Reading, and ESL. Students in Word Jam work with Cañada College faculty to practice college-level reading and writing strategies, practice English, learn the expectations of their specific English, Reading, or ESL courses, and become familiar with campus resources.

This Jam has been our largest to date. We were able serve 100 students during the week which is a 32% increase in participation over our summer session in August 2015. This was possible because of the amazing faculty and staff

members who drive Word Jam forward with their energy and passion to help students achieve. They, along with tutors, were instrumental helping students achieve positive outcomes, where some students placed higher on the Cañada College English placement exam, and others report that they feel much more prepared for their next English course.

Thank you to all faculty and staff who participated and made the event special to the students that we serve.
