From the Desk of Father David This weekend Blessed John Henry Newman will be canonized a saint of the Universal Church. Newman (1801 – 1890) was a theologian, a poet, and a Catholic priest. He was first an Anglican priest, but then converted to Catholicism in 1845. Already recognized as a leading churchman of his times, New-man’s conversion strained his relationship with both his family and his friends. Newman was ordained a Catholic priest in Rome in 1846. There is no room here to do justice to all the accomplishments of this leading educator, scholar, and defender of Catholicism. Suffice it to say that in recognition of his work for the Church, Pope Leo XIII elevated Newman to the rank of cardinal in 1879 at the age of 79, a rare honor for one who was neither a bishop nor the head of a dicastery in Rome. For more on Newman, I would rec-ommend Fr. Ian Ker’s excellent book, John Henry Newman: A Biography (Oxford:1990). Newman took as his motto, cor ad cor loquitur, “heart speaks to heart.” The motto has two mean-ings. At one level, it refers to the personal relationship between God, the Creator, and man, His creation, which is achieved especially through prayer. At the same time, it refers to the interpersonal relationship achieved by Christians within the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ, which has Christ as its head and Christians as its members. Within that Body we speak a common language of love. Newman realized that the personal influence of Christian upon others, Christians and non-Christians alike, is an important form of evangelization.

This past weekend I was at my alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania, to participate in the 125th anniversary of the founding of its Newman Club, the first of its kind in the nation. While I was at Penn, I was an active member of, and eventually president of, its Newman Association. Newman Associ-ations are the official Catholic presence on non-Catholic college and university campuses. It was no sur-prise that Timothy Harrington, then a medical student at Penn, chose Newman as the patron for the organi-zation he founded in 1893. Newman was already recognized as the leading English-speaking Catholic theologian of the 19th Century. Newman had served as rector for the newly founded Catholic University of Ireland. His collection of essays written during his term as rector, published under the name The Idea of a University, still ranks among the classics on the subject of higher education. Newman favored a broad and liberal education, challenging the claims of those who espoused a more utilitarian view of edu-cation. According to Newman, a University should be a place where students are “educated,” rather than merely a place for them to be “instructed.” A place where they would learn to think and to analyze and to synthesize information. A place where they could acquire “intellectual skills” rather than practical, “mechanical skills.” This debate between knowledge for the sake of knowledge and information for the sake of practical application is still ongoing as we enter the 21th Century.

In a sermon delivered in 1873 on the occasion of the opening of the first Catholic seminary in Eng-

land since the Reformation, Newman warned the future priests in the audience that the world in which they would minister would be far more challenging than what priests had previously been facing.

Newman opposed relativism. A recent biographer of Newman summed up Newman’s life as one

driven by a “passion for truth.” Newman vigorously opposed “religious liberalism” which held that “there is no positive truth in religion, but that one creed is an good as another” since all are just “matters of opin-ion.” On Newman’s tombstone appears the epitaph: Ex umbris et imaginibus in veritatem – “from shad-ows and images into the truth.”

St. John Henry Newman, pray for us.
