From the Desk of Father David

Nowadays it seems that at this time of the year we have two celebrations going on in parallel, one a secular cele-bration and, the other, a Christian celebration. The secular celebration is the one with greeting cards; with gifts of stuff that we frequently don’t really need; with office parties; with holiday tipping, that sometimes feels more like a bribe; and let’s not forget the plethora of Hallmark TV specials about the miraculous things, frequently romantic, that seem to hap-py at this “special time” of the year, that seem to speak more of a magic than God’s grace. This is the celebration of “Happy Holidays” and “Seasons Greetings.” This celebration apparently ends at 12:00 AM on December 26; or maybe when the last pots and pans of Christmas dinner are done being washed and put away; or maybe when the unwanted pre-sents are returned or exchanged. Trees are tossed starting on December 26. By the end of the week, Valentine’s Day cards will be displayed in the card stores. The Church takes a different view. For the Church, Christmas is not a happy holiday, but a happy holy day. And it only begins on Christmas Day. Depending upon how far you stretch it, the celebration of Christmas might end on January 1 -- not celebrated because it’s New Years Day. After all, January 1 was not considered the beginning of the New Year until the year 567. But rather January 1 is celebrated because it is the Octave Day of Christmas. Christ-mas was considered one of those very important holy days, like Easter and Pentecost, the joyful celebration of which lasted for an octave, eight days – each celebrated as another Christmas Day. Or the celebration of Christmas could end on the Epiphany, January 6 – the Twelfth Day of Christmas. The one with the twelve lords a leaping. In fact, for many years the Epiphany was celebrated as a more important holy day than Christmas. Before Vatican II, Christmas Time ended on February 2, the Feast of the Presentation, forty days after Christmas, when the infant Jesus was presented in the Temple. Now, liturgically Christmas time ends with the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord. This year, the Feast of the Baptism falls on January 13, making January 13 the last day of Christmas-time. So our Christmas Masses are not the end of Christmas, summarily disposed of with the trashing of trees and the tossing of used wrapping paper, and celebrated with post-holiday sales. Rather, they are only the beginning of Christ-mas. The beginning of a grace-filled time during which to welcome Christ. Immanuel. God with us. Not only 2000 years ago in a far distant place; but right here and right now. God with us. Every year we have this awesome celebration of Our Lord’s birth, stretching over days, during which to let Jesus change us. During which to let Jesus transform us; if only we will let Him. If only we are willing to welcome Him into our hearts. The celebration of Jesus’ birth, is the celebration of His Incarnation. His becoming flesh. That is why at the Christmas Masses, when we profess the Creed, instead of just bowing at the words “and became man,” we are invited to kneel. We kneel at these words to drive home the importance of the Incarnation. God becoming man. God truly with us. Christmas is not just an ecclesiastical President’s Day; a memorial of things past; as though we were just cele-brating an event that happened some 2000 years ago. We are celebrating something that is happening to us now; some-thing that is happening to us today, at this time and in this place. As though for the first time, we are once again invited to welcome Christ into our world, and into our hearts. The crèche that we erect is not just an historical panorama. It is a symbol of Christ’s rebirth in us, if we but welcome Him. Christmas is a time for new beginnings. We welcome Christ, not so much as the Word of God through whom the universe was created, nor as Pantocrator, the ruler of all creation. He is these, to be sure. But today we welcome Christ as a little baby; as love incarnate -- the Christ-child; who offers us the opportunity to embrace Him with a parent’s love, even as He comes to us to embrace us as a brother. Newborns are tiny, fragile, and totally dependent humans. It’s not unusual for new parents, new fathers in particular, to be afraid to hold their new child for the first time. So tiny. So fragile. So dependent. So full of love. We must not be afraid to embrace the infant Jesus. To welcome Him into are hearts. Just as the angel told Joseph, not to be afraid to take Mary as His wife, so God tells us not to be afraid to wel-come His son, Jesus into our hearts and homes. The contemplation of the Incarnation invites us to be born again through a more vital union with Jesus Christ, Who became man for us. Christmas reminds us that Christ humbled Himself to share in our humanity, so that we might one day come to share in His divinity. And all we need to do that, to share in His divinity, is to follow the lead of Mary and of Joseph and do the will of the Father. To not be afraid to embrace the infant Jesus and welcome Him into our hearts. To not be afraid to let Him transform us with His love. The love of the only-begotten Son of the Father; whose birth we celebrate today. Welcome Him. Immanuel. God with us. Not only 2000 years ago; but right here, and right now.

Alma Redemptoris Mater The Marian Antiphon used during the Christmas Cycle (the First Sunday in Ad-vent through Candlemass (Feb. 2)):

O loving Mother of our Redeemer, gate of heaven, star of the sea, Hasten to aid thy fallen people who strive to rise once more. Thou who brought forth thy holy Creator, all creation wond’ring, Yet remainest ever Virgin, taking from Gabriel’s lips that joyful “Hail!”: be merciful to us sinners.

Christm[s M[ss @tt_n^[n]_ Please note that our seven Christmas Masses will be compliant with the limitation of 150 persons. We are making arrangements so that any overflow can be accommodated downstairs, in the church hall to participate via livestream TV. Please consult the parish website as Christ-mas approaches for further details. The Masses will also be broadcast to the parking lot on 88.1 FM. In addition, we are making arrangements for some of the Masses to be livestreamed to homes. Please note that the 4pm and 7pm Vigil Masses on Christmas Eve tend historically to be the most crowded. Please prayerfully consider attending the other Masses if you are concerned with numbers or want the best chance to have a seat in the church. We regret this inconvenience and appreciate your kindness and cooperation.
