From the Desk of Father David Last week I introduced the subject of Christian anthropology, that branch of theology that deals with the human person as it relates to God. I noted that the quintessential statement of Christian anthropology is set forth in the Book of Genesis. There we find clearly and succinctly set forth a statement of the fundamental principle of Christian anthropology: God created man in the image of Himself, in the image of God He created him, male and female He created them. In this single verse (Gen. 1:27) we learn three fundamental points of Christian anthropology: first, that mankind was creat-ed, and that it was created by God; second, that mankind was created by God in the image of God Himself; and, third, that God in-tentionally created both male and female. Last week I focused on the first two of these elements. Today I will speak to the third. “Male and female He created them.” From this we can reach two important conclusions. First, that God intentionally creat-ed male and female with a purpose. Second, that this male/female duality is the only fundamentally distinguishing characteristic between humans recognized by God. Because of what’s been going on in the news, I would like to address this second fundamental conclusion first, reserving the first conclusion until next week. Certainly, not all humans look and act alike. But these differences are not fundamental to our human nature, nor are they definitional. All differences other than the male/female duality are mere “accidentals.” These would include skin color, facial fea-tures, genetic makeup, height, intelligence, gender, and so forth. While it is important that we recognize the God-given distinction between a man and a woman, it is equally important that we recognize, as a corollary, that there are no other God-created distinc-tions among human beings. That being said, we humans love to classify and categorize. But when we do so with respect to our own humanity, we do so at our peril, because we are then almost naturally tempted to make something about the different classifications we’ve come up with. So, for example, for purposes of the census the government has come up with six categories of “races:” (i) white, (ii) black, (iii) American Indian or Alaska Native, (iv) Asian, (v) Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, and (vi) Other. But the census literature warns that these categories reflect merely a “social definition of race” and “not an attempt to define race biologically, an-thropologically, or genetically.” Then why have them? The government tells us that they are used to “create statistics.” Huh? What good are statistics if they are not used? The government goes on to tell us that the data, these statistics, are used by the government “in the basic research behind numerous poli-cies.” More specifically, that they are used in planning and funding government programs. Yep, it’s all about politics and money. That may be fine for the government, but theologically speaking these statistics don’t amount to a hill of beans. The Church teaches that we all share an equal human dignity. “The dignity of the human person is rooted in his creation in the image and likeness of God; it is fulfilled in his vocation to divine beatitude. It is essential to a human being freely to direct himself to this fulfillment. By his deliberate actions, the human being does, or does not, conform to the good promised by God and attested by moral conscience.” (CCC 1700). In a nutshell: It’s what we do that matters, not who we are. No person’s human dignity may be compromised by race or by heritage or by any other distinguishing characteristic – in-cluding whether or not they, having been conceived, have been born, or whether or not they have a good quality of life. Personhood begins at conception. All lives matter, from conception to natural death. Nor may anyone’s human dignity be denied by reason of their occupation. There are criminals and wrongdoers in every occupation under the sun – whether it be doctor, or lawyer, or banker, or police officer, or politician, or or grocery clerk, or even priest. It is what we as individuals choose to do – that is, our actions – that count. Our conception of race is a relatively modern concept, and it is a concept fraught with danger. In His Great Commission to the Apostles, Jesus instructed them to go out to all nations. To rich and to poor; to black and to white; to young and to old; to every-one, and preach the Good News. There have been heroic Catholics of every race and ethnicity and citizenship; some came from wealth and others from poverty. Some of the greatest saints in the church have been people of color – St. Martin de Porres, St. Kate-ri Tekakwitha, St. Charles Lwanga, and St. Paul Miki, to name but a few. The church has always welcomed all – not in the name of “diversity,” which is a purely political value of very recent vintage; but in response to Jesus’ mandate to go out to all nations, equally and without discrimination. The church’s doctrine did not address the issue of race because it wasn’t an issue – until recently. The Church never had to say it, because in the official teaching of the church there was never a doubt as to the human dignity of all. God did not divide the human family; we did. In the words of Bishop Checchio, “We are all equally made in the image and likeness of God. Racism occurs when this fundamental truth is ignored. It denies the teaching of Jesus and our common, created humanity. Racism is a sin that divides the human family.”

While some churches re-opened this past weekend, I am happy to say that Our Lady of Mount Virgin has never closed. While following Diocesan guidelines, the church has been open every single day, offering an opportunity for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and a peaceful place for prayer and meditation during these difficult times. On June 12 we resumed our regular Mass, Confession, and Adoration schedule. We will, how-ever, have to operate within certain continuing guide-lines. It is important that all parishioners be familiar with these guidelines and patiently cooperate in their observation. 1. DO NOT COME TO CHURCH IF YOU OR A MEMBER OF YOUR HOUSEHOLD IS SHOWING SYMPTOMS OF COVID-19. Prayer fully consider whether you should come to church if you are in one of the vulnerable categories because of age (65+) or a health condition. The Bishop’s suspension of the obligation to attend Mass on Sunday remains in effect. 2. Social distancing of 6 feet must be observed be-tween households. That means it is impossible to predict how many the church will actually be able to accommo-date. If possible, households should attend the same Mass. We are trying to avoid the necessity of parishioners having to make reservations in advance. Please consider attending the 8am, 11:30 am or 1:30 pm Spanish Mass, as these Masses are generally less well attended. Once the church reaches capacity, we will have to turn people away. The 10:00 am Mass will be broadcast on FM radio to the parking lot (similar to what we have been doing for the last three Sundays). Those participating in the 10:00 am Mass from their cars will have to come into the church for Holy Communion. We will re-assess our approach as time goes by. 3. Please follow signs regarding open entrances and follow the directions of the ushers as to seating. 4. YOU MUST WEAR A FACE MASK. We will not be able to provide face masks, so you must bring your own. (Children under 2 years of age or those with chronic respiratory issues need not wear face masks.) You may choose to wear gloves, but must remove them to receive Holy Communion. Please do not leave used face masks or gloves or anything else (e.g,, used tissues or candy wrap-pers) on the premises. 5. YOU MUST USE HAND SANITIZER UPON ENTERING THE CHURCH. PThere are sanitizer s at every entrance to the church. Please feel free to bring your own sanitizer as well.

6. For safety reasons Missalettes have been removed from the pews. Missalettes good until August 8, 2020 are available for your personal use. They are in the cry room. Please do not leave them in the church. Suggested dona-tion $5. 7. We will wipe down pews between Masses with disfectant. You may bring your own wipes if you choose to also wipe down your own area. Please do not leave the used wipes in the church. 8. Holy Communion will be distributed in the church after the conclusion of Mass. Holy Communion may only be received in your hand. You may not wear a glove for the reception of Holy Communion. Please remove your face mask for the reception of Holy Communion. There will be no distribution of the Precious Blood from the chalice. 9. There will be no exchange of a sign of peace. 10. There will be instrumental and some limited sung music, but there will be no congregational singing. 11. Please take a copy of the Bulletin home with you. If you read a Bulletin in church, please take it home with you. Do not leave it in the church. 12. The cry room will be closed. While the rest room will be open for emergencies, please use the rest room be-fore you leave your house. 13. The church will be open daily from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Thank you in advance for your kindness, understanding, and cooperation. Please be well and stay safe.
