“Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will

you be because of their inability to repay you.” (Luke 14:13-14)

We have a difficult time with the concept of giving

without expecting something in return. Even when we give to charity we often want something in return – a

raffle ticket, a dinner, a chance to play golf or our name in print. Yet, as Christian stewards, we need to remember that the true reward for our giving awaits

us in heaven.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Saturday, September 7, 2019 St. John Neumann Pastoral Center 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

The Word of God: Celebrated and Lived Saturday, September 14, 2019

St. John Neumann Pastoral Center 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM On Saturday, September 7 & 14, the Diocesan Office of Worship will be offering a Formation Opportunity for those who serve as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion or as a Reader. This is an opportunity to learn and explore more about these areas of ministry and discover some practical ways of preparing for ministry. Presenter: Mr. Tony Varas – Director of Worship, Diocese of Metuchen. To find out more and reserve a place go to: www.diometuchen.org/liturgy-workshops or call 732-765-6438.

Last weekend I celebrated my first funeral Mass for a close friend. It’s a sobering experience. And the pressure

was on. I was instructed by his daughter that I was expected “to hit a home run.” Some laughter; some tears. But a good funeral homily is not be a eulogy, though there is certainly a time and a place for remembering the deceased. The homily should relate the person’s life to their living of the Christian faith. The funeral liturgy is not so much a memorial to or a remembrance of the deceased, but an effective aid to his or her eternal salvation. In the liturgy we ask the Father to purify this child of God of his sins and of their consequences, and to admit him to the fullness of the heavenly King-dom, remembering that, in death, the gift of life is transformed, but it is never revoked.

Some claim that Catholicism is a joyless religion of doctrine and rules. That its saints are limited to martyrs and

ascetics. And fasting and abstinence are certainly part of the Catholic tradition. It is a privilege to die as a martyr, a wit-ness, to the faith. And rules and doctrine do have their place. But the kerygma of our religion, its very essence, is the joyful message that we call “the Good News.” Christ has Risen! And in doing so He has opened the gates of paradise to us, if we but believe and follow. Take the analogy of baseball. One falls in love with baseball by going to a game, not from reading the 169 pages of the Rules of Baseball. And yet where would we be without those rules. Reinventing the game, one game at a time! Similarly, we fall in love with Christ because He is our Risen Lord, though we still need the rules and doctrines.

The second century bishop, St. Irenaeus, is one of the most important Fathers of the early Church. One of St.

Irenaeus’ more famous quotes is his anthropological observation that “the glory of God, is man fully alive.” And my friend, Richard, was certainly that – a man fully alive. He knew how to seize the day; how to suck the marrow out of life – and out of a good osso buco as well! For Richard enjoyed life like the marrow oozing from a tender and hearty osso buco; something that is unctuously rich and flavorful. Something to be savored and enjoyed and enthusiastically appre-ciated for all its goodness. Richard knew how to appreciate good food and good wine and good times. He was the con-summate entertainer, and the quintessential host. I will certainly miss sharing his carefully chosen selections of fine cheeses from Murray’s in the Village – even if one of the favorite cheeses that inevitably graced his table was Stinking Bishop!

The joy that Richard got out of life and that he shared with others is not surprising. The nineteenth century Brit-

ish writer, Hilaire Belloc, once observed that, “Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine, there’s always laughter and good red wine.” Above all, Richard was a man of faith. He loved and embraced his Catholic faith. Richard was living proof that being a man fully alive is not antithetical to living a life of faith. In fact, the two are complementary. For Richard, life was a journey and an adventure. It was never merely a commute. The commandment to love one’s neighbor came alive in Richard, and doing things for others came second nature to Richard. He had that rare charm for instant, yet abid-ing, friendship, and the knack for being the glue that kept both family and friends together. For Richard, family and friends was everything, with Jesus coming at the top of the list.

I will miss Richard. But death is not an end. With God there is always a future. This life has prepared Richard

to see our Risen Lord. Life is a mystery; a mystery, not to be solved, but, rather, a mystery to be lived -- and to be lived well. Enjoy!

THE DIGNITY OF WORKERS Workers are not to be treated as slaves; justice demands that the dignity of human personality be respected in them, ennobled as it has been through what we

call the Christian character. If we hearken to natural reason and to Christian philosophy, gainful occupations are not a mark of shame to man, but rather of respect, as they provide him with an honorable means of supporting life.

You who labor as you pray

lift your heart to God with your hands. -St. Bernard of Clairvaux

THE PARISH OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED this Monday September 2 in Observance of Labor Day.

PRISON GREETING CARDS First, a very sincere thank you for

your generosity and faithfulness to this minis-try! The women at Edna Mahan Correctional Facility have been blessed by your good-ness. The Chaplaincy now has a more than a sufficient number of greeting cards to distrib-ute to the women, thanks to Our Lady of Mt. Virgin. With the prison storage space for cards now at capacity, the collection of greet-ing cards will conclude at the end of Septem-ber. Please do not leave any cards in the Church after the end of September. Once again, a great "thank you" and may God re-ward you for your goodness to the least among us. Sister Kathleen Rooney, SSJ Chaplain

Thank you to all our generous parishioners who supported our Back to School Drive. We re-ceived a call from the coordinator thanking you for your support. The supplies enables them to

provide community sites with much needed school supplies. Community sites are aware of the annual donations our church provides and

they contact them throughout the school year requesting supplies. With your continued help,

they are able to fill those requests. Once again, thank you for your continued support.
