From the Desk of Father David We know precious little about the visit of the mysterious visitors from the East that we know as the magi. The little we do know comes from a mere 12 verses in the second chapter of St. Matthew’s Gospel, the only Gospel narrative that mentions the visit. They are described as magi, a name given to Zoroastrian priests from Persia. They are presuma-bly learned men who, among other talents, have a good knowledge of astronomy and astrology. They observe a “star” – an astronomical or astrological phenomenon that signifies to them the birth of a king of the Jews. Whatever it was, this phenomenon launches them on a journey to Jerusalem, the capital of the Jewish peo-ple. Although described as a star, it must have been something out of the ordinary – not a shooting star or a comet, as these were well known; and, comets were thought to be bad omens. Perhaps a nova, a stellar explosion, except that such a phenomenon would have been visible to everyone, and this particular phenomenon seems to have been recognized on-ly by our travelers. Perhaps it was an astrological event, a conjunction of planets, that would have meant nothing to King Herod’s court or to the average sky-gazer, but had great significance to the magi. A similar astronomical event occurred just last month on the winter solstice. By the same token, just maybe it was a miraculous event, seen only by the magi. Whatever you choose to believe, it is clear that God took the initiative in bringing these men to Jerusalem. It is always God who takes the initiative; God who imparts the grace that brings us to Him, and who invites us to believe and to follow. We don’t know how many magi there were. The Gospel account relates no number, only the fact that they brought with them three gifts – gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Tradition gives them the names Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar, and identifies them as coming from India, Persia, and Arabia, respectively. This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany; traditionally, celebrated on January 6, it was the twelfth day of Christmas, made famous by the Christmas carol, The Twelve Days of Christmas,” and by William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. The word Epiphany comes from two Greek words meaning “to show to,” and, consequently, to reveal or to make manifest. Today’s feast celebrates the manifestation of the coming of Jesus to the Gentile nations, as represent-ed by the magi. The story of the magi is the story of a life changing revelation; an encounter with the Word Incarnate. The ma-gi, men living their lives as seekers of the truth, find the heart of truth itself in the Christ-child. They pay Him homage with gifts that acknowledge Christ as priest, prophet, and king. And then, having been transformed by what they have seen, their lives are forever changed. Their life journeys take a dramatic change and, while they return from whence they came, they return “by another route,” having been radically changed. It is through this encounter and relationship with Christ that the human quest for truth and fulfillment is given shape and a new direction. Christ’s arrival – Christmas, the Nativity – is not enough. For Christ’s Incarnation to have meaning, it must be complemented, brought to completion, fulfilled, by His Epiphany. By His manifestation. Without the Epiphany, Christ-mas soon risks going the way of tossed trees and trashed wrapping paper. Our lesson from the magi is that the celebra-tion of Christ’s manifestation, His Epiphany, should bring us back to a personal encounter with Christ. And there we must, like the magi, fall on our knees and do Him homage, recognizing Him as our one and only king, seeking to do His will, and not our own. The celebration of the Epiphany calls us to re-invigorate our relationship with Him who we hail as Prince of Peace and King of Kings. And, having encountered Him again, and done Him worship, we are admonished to go on our way, only now, by a different route; radically changed; called to live a different way of life. Living lives in and through a growing relationship with the new born king, the Word Incarnate, the very personification of love, Jesus the Christ, Son of God and Son of Mary. Emmanuel. God with us. We are each called upon to answer the question, “How has Christ’s appearance to us changed us? Are we more humble? More charitable? More patient? More forgiving? More kind? – because of our encounter with Christ? Or is He soon forgotten and tossed like tinsel off the tree or packed away like the lights and the ornaments? Christ is born. And that’s great. But it must not stop there. He beckons us to a close encounter; we, too, are called to follow His star. And now, His having appeared to us, we are called to go forth by a different route. Living and loving as He did.
