We are delighted to be able to present to you the programme for the 11th annual Clonmel Junction Festival.

This year’s theme is Our Town, Our Place, Our Festival. The banners and flags created by the artistic

team, with the help of nearly 250 people in the local community explored this topic and now transform the

town with their vibrant colour and creative splendour. The Cafés Carte Blanche return again with a new

range of exciting flavours and entertaining drop-in activities.

The theatre programme is, we believe, most exciting with several international shows and three new

shows created by Irish theatre makers in collaboration with Clonmel Junction Festival. Two of these are in

the Emerging Artist Series; the third is City of Clowns, a co-production with Barabbas Theatre Company

which will incorporate over 50 performers from Clonmel working with Raymond Keane in the run up to the

Festival. Local performers will also be involved in the Festival Choir with two concerts focussing on Austrian

music this year.

Once again, the Old Chadwicks building on Queen Street will be our focal point, housing the popular

Playlounge family space and café, the now familiar theatre and Jackie’s Catering Tent where one and all can

come to share a hearty meal.

We are deeply appreciative of all the support we receive both from the national funding agencies, local

funders, sponsors, patrons and from the public, who support us and enjoy the Festival as volunteers, friends

and audiences. It comes but once a year and offers so many opportunities for new adventures, wonderful

encounters and magical moments. Join us in the many venues around town and be a part of it.

Bear Trap (UK) presents Bound By Jesse Britton

Bound is a thrilling tale told with imagination and song that will live in your memory long after the lights

go down.

The threat of bankruptcy forces this incongruous crew out to sea in treacherous weather conditions.

Not only do they have to battle the relentless storm, they must also battle each others egos.

Their lives are not the only thing they could lose.

Why we picked the show:

We saw Bound in Edinburgh last year and were captivated by this gripping adventure, told with

enthusiasm and energy. The sea shanties sung in four part harmony are the icing on the cake.

If you loved Tom Crean Antarctic Explorer back in 2004, you will love this!

Barabbas Theatre Company in association with Clonmel Junction Festival presents

City of Clowns With Raymond Keane, Directed by Maria Fleming

A clown show with a difference - A clown story like no other

In a warehouse full of empty boxes emerges Fibril the clown. On seeing the audience he is confused

and frightened. But slowly he warms to his audience and grows mischievous. But Fibril’s new found

contentment is short lived as he realises he must earn his place in the City of Clowns.

Barabbas Theatre Company have been one of Ireland’s most important independent theatre companies

for over twenty years. Don’t miss this magnificent and magical collaboration between Barabbas and

members of the local community who populate the City of Clowns.

Why we picked the show:

We saw City of Clowns as a work in progress last autumn and fell in love with Raymond Keane’s

endearing clown Fibril. We were also captivated by the magic of the city of clowns.

An amazing family show.

Rannel Theatre Company (UK) presents Flhip Flhop

Classic comedy routines updated for the hip hop age with witty repartee, slapstick comedy,

laughter, breakdance, beatbox and Dj’ing… All creating a turbo charged comedy for all!

Two painters are doing a job in a friend’s flat. Acting more like Laurel and Hardy than two

decorators, things go horribly wrong when they try to outdo each other with their moves.

Throw into the mix an utterly brilliant police chase acted out to increasingly ludicrous

sound effects and you get a really manic show suitable for all the family.

“Wonderfully fresh and fine comic actors… superb funky moves and breaking…

A comedic gem.” The Scotsman

“An hour of genuinely breathtaking physical comic theatre. This is a laugh-out-loud funny

show, skilfully executed with razor sharp timing and intrinsic hip hop skills.” The List

Why we picked the show:

Another hit show from Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Flhip Flhop is snappy, slick, funny and

wonderfully performed. Think Laurel and Hardy meets Led Zeppelin, or The Marx Brothers

with beat box grooves and flipped baseball caps.

Venue Junction Theatre @ Chadwicks

Tickets €16 (Concs€12), Family Tickets €49

The Theatre Project presents

The Blonde, The Brunette and the Vengeful RedheadDirected by Breege Brennan

Rhonda is 43, happily married and settled into family life in the quiet suburban neighbourhood of

anytown… until Graham walks out on her and is seen with a “gorgeous blonde”. Lynette, the well-meaning

next door neighbour urges Rhonda to confront the woman and that’s when things begin to spiral out

of control…

Misinformation, mistaken identity, lies and half truths lead to a series of unexpected events, some comic,

some tragic. A story in which friends and strangers are drawn together, and relationships are torn apart.

“It is a wonderful piece of writing…we are constantly blindsided and misdirected by a very clever script

and characters so real they are often hilarious and truly frightening… you shouldn’t miss it…”

Sunday Mail, Adelaide

“A fascinating play, Hewett’s script is ingeniously written.” Cincinnati Citybeat

Why we picked the show:

A great scenario for a fun piece of theatre and what a great name for a play?

Think Desperate Housewives on the Coleville Road!

Bunk Puppets (Canada) presents Sticks, Stones and Broken Bones

Canadian puppeteer Jeff Achtem’s show is one of a kind. His effortless transformation of bits and bobs,

balloons and borrowed shoes into surreal shadow puppets is mesmerizing. His imagination is a wonder,

bedazzling the audience with flying chickens, brain transplants and sneaky ninjas!

“Something really exceptional. His imagination is glorious…you can’t help but be captivated”.

Advertiser, Adelaide ****

“He’s a master of the art. He’ll leave you wanting more” Glam, Adelaide

“The laughs began within seconds of the show starting… a truly captivating performance”

Independent Weekly, Adelaide

Why we picked the show:

Jeff Achtem’s creativity and charm are just amazing. The Festival Director loved every minute of this

unusual and wonderful show. Don’t miss it!

Anu Artistic Company (Iran) presents Trio Directed by Ahmad Kache Chian Supported by The Iranian Dramatic Arts Centre

A moving story of three courageous young Iranian women and

the boundaries they have learned to live with. Boundaries which

are self-imposed, enforced by peer groups, society, or the

state. Haunting images abound in a performance bristling with

tension that holds the audience in perfect stillness.

Why we picked the show:

The Festival Director’s visit to Tehran was a profoundly moving

experience. He felt that this show captured some of the

country’s extraordinary contradictions; creativity, censorship,

enthusiasm, despair, energy and lethargy.

Cheery Wild Productions in association with Clonmel Junction Festival present

Love All Directed by Donal Gallagher

From the Wimbledon finals to the hangman’s noose, this is the true and terrible tale of Irish

sporting legend Vere St. Ledger Gould. A whopping great hangover kept him from the

Wimbledon prize, but a head in a hat box almost sent him to the gallows…

The electrifying new theatre company ‘Cheery Wild’, have

starched their whites, re-stretched their racquets and are ready

to serve a virtuoso volley of Victorian melodrama. And if you’re

lucky you might even get strawberries and cream…

Why we picked the show:

Similar to One Small Step which played in Clonmel Junction

Festival 2009, Love All is a madcap comedy sure to leave you

astounded by our forgotten sporting hero. It’s sure be to be a hit!

Entre Les Mots in association with Clonmel Junction Festival present

MaDam Directed by Eleonor Nicolas

Playing is easy for children. But where does it all go when you

grow up and it all gets so very serious? Too much time spent

thinking, worrying and fretting! Too little time playing! MaDam

is the story of four women who decide to do something

about it, to connect their heads back onto their bodies and to

remember how to play.

Why we picked the show:

In 2010 Eleonore Nicolas brought her adorable production

of A Spoonful of Silence to Clonmel Junction Festival.

This year she is back with a new show which promises to be

quirky and playful.

Artist Maurice Caplice will be setting up The Sound Lab where he will be

joined by guest artists and musicians who will be rethinking ways of hearing

and seeing sound.

sound is just another tool in the artists bag of tricks, to be used towards an

idea and not the other way round. So whether you are a musician, a DJ, a

sound engineer, an artist in search of a new discipline, or just an interested

visitor, come explore the exciting world of sound art in all its forms. Bring

your instruments, your voice,an old tin can or a motorized fan; the limits to

noise are endless.

Storyhouse With Nina Tanis and Fiona Dowling

Stories foster empathy and assist in understanding our own cultural heritage

as well as that of others’. In our technological age, modern storytelling is an

invaluable tool using the simple power of the human voice to teach, comfort,

and entertain.

In Storyhouse, you are invited to practice and partake in creative

storytelling, workshops, games, and activities with a twist, that will help you

find a personal style and become more comfortable with your ability to tell

stories, practice new ones or sharpen old ones. Or you can simply drop by for

a cuppa and watch and listen.

Suir River Café With Lyn Mather, Landscape Interface Studio & South Tipp County Heritage Office

Suir River Café welcomes you to explore the watery world of the Suir, as

we travel with it on its journey’s past, present and future. Navigate your

way through our artistic installations, multimedia creations and community

mapping, where your ideas and thoughts on the river and how we can

integrate the river into our communities and our lives will be explored.

We hope to rekindle a connection with the river that has shaped not only

the landscape but also our town and our past livelihoods. The Café will be

a space to reflect and contemplate memories and create a shared vision of

how we can help the river flow into the future. Come and be inspired! Your

An evening of Flamenco with Mary Lambourne and her band

Constelaciones is an evening of exquisite music from one of Barcelona’s most

other styles and offering a repertoire tuned to the particular delight of Mary

from Almería (Spain). A fine example of her talent can be seen

in the latest film by Carlos Saura ‘Flamenco Flamenco’.

Breathe Owl Breath Support Little Wings

An evening of American folk

Hailing from a Lincoln-log style cabin in the woods of East Jordan, Michigan, Breathe Owl Breathe have

been making intimate, delicate and captivating music since 2004. Although reminiscent of other log-

cabin indie folk contemporaries such as Bon Iver, Breathe Owl Breathe is a much more assuring musical

experience - uniquely blending stunning harmony and clever instrumentation with elements of story-

telling, humour, and composition. Breathe Owl Breathe demonstrate a deep musicality and craftsmanship

in their songs that are ephemerally simple and yet remarkably enduring, crossing genres and generations.

Little Wings’ music is haunting, understated, and deeply personal. Within the lyrics we hear the natural

world and the seasons, as if they have been woven in with the scenery in which the music was created -

be it the countryside of southern California or the pervasive, stubborn fog of San Francisco.

Why we picked the show:

This is a wonderful opportunity to see two of the most sought after Indie Folk artists in the USA.

Their work manages to be both intensely real and yet infused with a dreamy whisp-like quality.

Schools and Community Banner Project

Abbott proudly supports the Community Participation Programme

Our Golden Story With Miriam Robinson

Our Golden Story is the theme for the tenth year of the Festival’s Banner Project. This year we invited

participants from local schools and community groups to express what was special, unique and valuable

in their lives, their homes and the town community in which they lived.

The project process, which took place in April and May, explored the language of symbols and their

expressive power through both the Celtic and the Aboriginal Art traditions. The development of personal

symbols for each student was supported through a series of visual activities by employing a range of

drawing and art tools.

Throughout the process, participants engaged in both individual and group art activities and in the creation

of original banners which transform the town centre, in both a unique and deeply meaningful manner.

Participating schools: Powerstown N.S., Presentation Primary, St-Mary’s CBS, St-Oliver’s N.S., Lisronagh N.S.

Participating community groups: CYTE/Active retirement, NLN/Marian Court, Rehab Care, Bridgewater House.

Brilliant BuntingWith Aishling Egan

This exciting textile art project ran over a three months period up to the Festival. Textile artist Aishling

Egan, a graduate of NCAD and specialist in embroidery, worked with over 40 volunteers from total

beginners to craft fanatics - who wished to learn new sewing skills or improve their current ones.

The inspiration for the bunting project is drawn from the rainbow, in all its shades, tones, gradients and

glory. Participants applied surface decoration to their flags by exploring a variety of sewing techniques

including embroidery, stitch, layering, appliqué expressing traditional skills in a contemporary way.

The project was a unique opportunity to create something for the community while meeting new people

and exchanging skills in the friendly relaxed atmosphere of the Common Thread Café. The bright and

brilliant bunting will be hung the length of Mitchell Street to celebrate Clonmel’s civic spirit during the

Festival. The bunting will also be kept as a resource to be used by other groups and organisations for

future occasions.
