A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR….
Please see below the words of Pope Francis in a prayer I use each day. Indeed, may the Risen Jesus enter all of your lives.“Let the risen Jesus enter your life, welcome him as a friend, with trust: he is life! If up till now you have kept him at a distance, step forward. He will receive you with open arms. If you have been indifferent, take a risk: you won’t be disappointed. If following him seems difficult, don’t be afraid, trust him, be confident that he is close to you, he is with you and he will give you the peace you are looking for and the strength to live as he would have you do.”
WELCOME!You may have come as a stranger to us, yet you are known to Our Lord, Jesus Christ. In His name we pray you will find peace, hospitality and friendship with us.

CLOTHE THE NAKEDFor the next few weeks, let us work on Clothe the Naked
as our Corporal Work of Mercy. While we won’t always see people on the street shivering in the cold, most of us know that many people find it difficult or impossible to purchase new clothing. Going through our closets and dropping off excess clothing to the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store is a no brainer but there is an element to clothing the naked that we must not ignore. Clothe the naked must involve restoring human dignity. We can restore the dignity of the poor by giving them our best; not just the clothes we no longer need but clothing that is in good condition and fashionable. We can take our involvement one step further and donate our time at the Thrift Store.
Giving our best means changing our attitudes. We need to “live simply so that others may simply live” as Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta instructs us. We don’t really need 50 pairs of shoes, 30 handbags, and 15 pairs of jeans do we? Is a bargain really a bargain if we don’t need it? We can put our funds to better use as a donation to a charity thus helping others and simultaneously freeing ourselves from the accumulation of possessions.
Giving our best means scratching below the surface of the traditional meaning of nakedness. When we look for the “naked” people in our community we should not be looking only for the people without clothing. People stripped of meaningful relationships are “naked” without friends and family. The “invisibles” are the people we pass who we don’t see because we are too involved with our own lives, because they don’t look and/or act like us or because we are too afraid to step out in faith and acknowledge them. They need us to clothe them with our love, our time, and our presence. It is as simple as looking them in the eye and asking them how their day is going.
To start us out on our quest to clothe the naked, the Women of Saint Edward are collecting NEW underwear and socks for men (M to XL) and women (size S to XL). There will be boxes in the Gathering Space to collect your donations April 2nd through April 10th. Donations will be taken to the St. Vincent de Paul Haven and New Beginnings. Thank you in advance for your donations.
WELCOME SUNDAYWelcome Sunday is April 3rd after both Masses. The Knights of Columbus will be providing the coffee and donuts. If your family or business would like to be a sponsor for Welcome Sunday, please contact Scott Scholten at 740-258-3287. We thank you for your contributions!
STEWARDSHIP INFORMATIONThere is a Stewardship binder available on the Welcome Table at Donut Sunday for anyone wishing to sign up for new Ministries. Please stop by if you have new interests and/or want to begin serving our Parish Family in a new Ministry.

Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord
Today’s Readings: Acts 10:34a, 37–43; Psalm 118:1–2, 16–17, 22–23; Colossians 3:1–4 or 1 Corinthians 5:6b–8; John 20:1–9. The refrain of today’s psalm captures the sen-timent of the Church this day. With hearts full of joy, we rejoice and give thanks to God for redeeming us in Christ. Christ, who suffered and died, has trampled death and bestowed life on those in the grave. We were once dead, but now, through the power of the Cross, we have life. For me, it’s always difficult to articulate what I feel on this day. After forty long days of prayer and purification, it’s an awesome wonder to relish in the gift of new life. Examining the areas of my life that have risen with Christ and been renewed invigorates me to share the Good News. Several years ago,
when the “alleluia” erupted during the Easter Vigil, I was brought to tears because it announced with great vigor Christ’s victory, and I knew how much I was loved. How have you or do you experience the Resurrection? The Gospel describes the story of Mary Magdalene arriving at the tomb while it was still dark. Do we need to see the Christ to believe in the Resurrection? Instead of joy, the Gospel paints a picture of distress and confusion. Where has the body of the Lord gone? The clue we get is that the burial cloths are still there — Jesus must have risen. When and where have you encountered the Risen Christ? In renewing our baptis-mal promises, we have been invited to show forth the Risen Christ to all we encounter. Go forth rejoicing.
BeliefO God who works wonders,we marvel in the Resurrection of Jesus,
your Son.In Christ, you have redeemed us and
brought us to life.May our “alleluia” proclaim
the Resurrectionand profess our willingness to join
ourselves to the Paschal Mystery.Grant us, we pray, O Lord, eyes to see you and ears to hear your voiceso that we might grow stronger in faithlike the disciples on that first Easter.Help us to bear witness to your
Son’s Resurrectionand give us a desire to seek and serve
you among the living.May your Holy Spirit fill us with joy, rousing our hearts to proclaim Christ,
the victor King.Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Sunday, March 27, 2016Let Us Rejoice and Be Glad
Reproducibles for Lent–Triduum–Easter 2016
This Week at HomeMonday, March 28, 2016WitnessThe speech Peter gives in the First Reading reminds us that each of us is a witness to the Resurrection. In Baptism, we have been raised to new life in the Spirit. Our commission, like the women in the Gospel, is to go and announce the Good News to our brothers and sisters. Rejoice, for our Lord is risen from the dead! Make time to attend Mass each day of the Octave of Easter. Today’s Readings: Acts 2:14, 22–33; Psalm 16:1–2a and 5, 7–8, 9–10, 11; Matthew 28:8–15.
Tuesday, March 29, 2016HeraldIn today’s Gospel, Mary Magdalene is found weeping at the tomb. When she encounters Jesus, she thinks he is the gar-dener. When he calls out her name, she recognizes him and becomes a herald of the Good News. Think of an instance when it took a while to notice Jesus’ presence and then how you proclaim the Good News. Today, spend a few moments meditating with an image of the Resurrection. Today’s Readings: Acts 2:36–41; Psalm 33:4–5, 18–19, 20 and 22; John 20:11–18.
Wednesday, March 30, 2016Good NewsJesus has bestowed upon his people many great gifts. In the First Reading, Peter and John proclaim Jesus as Savior in the healing of the crippled man. In turn, the man went about praising God. The Gospel tells the story of Emmaus and how the two disciples recognize Jesus in the breaking of the bread. They quickly go to share this Good News. With whom could you share the Good News of Jesus Christ? You do not need to do this with words. Your deeds could share the work of Christ. Today’s Readings: Acts 3:1–10; Psalm 105:1–2, 3–4, 6–7, 8–9; Luke 24:13–25.
Thursday, March 31, 2016Raised UpThe First Reading continues from where the reading left off yesterday. The healing stories presented in chapter 3 help prove that God has raised Jesus from the dead. Peter calls those who deny that Jesus is the Messiah to repent or be cut off from God. Ignorance is not an excuse because the proph-ets foretold these days. God is merciful to those who seek his holy name. Today’s Readings: Acts 3:11–26; Psalm 8:2ab and 5, 6–7, 8–9; Luke 24:35–48.
Friday, April 1, 2016EatingEvery time I hear the account in today’s Gospel, I am struck by the passion Peter has to greet our Lord. He cannot wait, and I presume he was filled with joy at the sight of Christ, because he jumps out of the boat. We need to be seized by the joy of Christ. How do we run to greet the Lord? Finally, can we be as bold as Peter and John in witnessing to the Resurrection? Prepare a festive meal in the coming week and share it with friends and family. Today’s Readings: Acts 4:1–12; Psalm 118:1–2 and 4, 22–24, 25–27a; John 21:1–14.
Saturday, April 2, 2016Go OutReading Acts is like reading a great novel. Today, Peter and John are forbidden to speak to anyone about Jesus, but they reply that it would be impossible not to do so. Has your heart been roused this Easter season to speak of the wonders Christ has done for us? Have there been times you’ve been silenced when talking about your faith in Christ? At the end of today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us to go into the world and proclaim the Gospel. If you have not done so, download Pope Francis’ The Joy of the Gospel from the Internet. Plan to read parts of it during each week of Easter Time. Today’s Readings: Acts 4:13–21; Psalm 118:1 and 14–15ab, 16–18, 19–21; Mark 16:9–15.

MERCY NOW ~ CELEBRATING THE YEAR OF MERCY
Mercy Mantra “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone.” John 8:7b MERCY IN MARRIAGE When was the last time you tried to one-up your spouse? Who did the most chores, who had the hardest day, how many practice pick-ups or bath times each spouse had done. We’ve all been there. Our harried lives and our human nature make many things in life a competition filled with demands, even with those we are supposed to love most. Even Pope Francis talked about spouses who resort to throwing plates. Next time you find yourself tempted to start the friendly banter which we all know can quickly turn snarky, stop and instead offer your spouse a “may I?” “May I hang up your coat?” or “May I pick up the kids for you?” or even “May I give you a few quiet minutes alone, locked in the bathroom?” “May I” is so much more than proper manners. It’s compassion, it’s consideration, it’s mercy, it’s love. MERCY FOR ME God doesn’t want to interrupt us. God is always there, but God doesn’t want to come between us and the gift of free will He gave us. We have to give ourselves the space to hear God and his plans for us. We do so much that drowns out the voice of God – be merciful this month and give yourself one minute of pure silence each day to hear God.

BETHESDA POST ABORTION HEALING MINISTRY As we prepare to embrace our Risen Christ this Easter, sometimes we cling to unbelief. We, in Bethesda, invite you to take time today to pray about what is “old” in you that He wants to make new. Ask Him to turn your mourning into joy and to put a new song in your heart. Many in Bethesda now move beyond the empty tomb; no longer tired and worn out. Come join us as resurrection people. Confidential Ministry lines: 614-309-0157 or 614-309-2651 or visit our website at bethesdahealing.org.

EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD MARCH 27, 2016
SPONSOR OF THE WEEK:
Happy Easter: Alleluia His is Risen! Indeed He is Risen. On this Easter weekend we conclude the Lord’s Prayer with petition 7: “But deliver us from Evil” and the Final Doxology: “For the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory are yours, and forever. Amen.” 2850 – The last petition to our Father is also included in Jesus’ prayer: “I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one.” John 17:15. We pray in communion with the whole Church, for the deliverance of the whole human family. 2851 – In this petition, evil is not an abstraction, but refers to a person, Satan, the evil one, the angel who opposes God. 2852 – “A murderer from the beginning…a liar and father of lies – Satan is the “deceiver of the whole world.” John 8:44; Rev. 12:9. One who entrusts himself to God does not dread the devil. “If God is for us, who can be against us?” Rom. 8:31. 2853 – Victory over the “prince of this world” was won once and for all at the Hour when Jesus freely gave himself up to death to give us his life. 2854 – When we ask to be delivered from the Evil One, we pray as well to be freed from all evils, present, past, and future of which the devil is the instigator and author. At the conclusion of this seventh petition, the priest at Mass will continue with these words from the Roman Missal: “Deliver us Lord we beseech you, from every evil and grant us peace in our day, so that aided by your mercy we might be ever free from sin and protected from all anxiety, as we await the blessed hope and coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.” 2855 – The Final Doxology: “For the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory are yours now and forever” – takes up the first three petitions for our Father, the glorification of his name, the coming of his reign and the power of his saving will. 2856 – Then we say “Amen,” so be it, and ratifying with our “Amen” what is contained in the prayer that God has taught us. Lk. 1:38. In review of the 7 petitions of the Lord’s Prayer and the corresponding paragraphs in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) see below:Our Father who art in Heaven. Petition 1: “Hallowed be thy name” – CCC: 2807-2815. Petition 2: “Thy Kingdom come” – CCC: 2816-2821. Petition 3: “Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven” – CCC: 2822-2827. Petition 4: “Give us this day our daily bread” – CCC: 2828-2837. Petition 5: “And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us” – CCC: 2838-2845. Petition 6: “And lead us not into temptation” – CCC: 2846-2849. Petition 7: “But deliver us from evil” – CCC: 2850-2854. And the final doxology: “For thine is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory” – CCC: 2855-2856 AMEN. So be it!
T h e C a t e c h i s m o f t h e C a t h o l i c Church reminds us that “Easter is not simply one feast among others, but the ‘Feast of feasts,’ the ‘Solemnity of solemnities,’ just as the Eucharist is the ‘Sacrament of sacraments.’ The mystery of the Resurrection, in which Christ crushed death, permeates with its powerful energy our old time, until all is subjected to Him.” (#1169)
It is difficult for us to fully comprehend the importance of this day and its meaning for us, its fulfillment of hope for us. We consider this to be the most important day on our Church calendar. If we have properly approached the Lenten period, this day comes at the end of a period of prayer and fasting and almsgiving. We should have been prepared to spiritually die with Christ, and to rise as He did on this day to the promise of new life both in this world and the next.
Christ has saved us, and that alone is reason for our joyous celebration. By receiving the Eucharist (communion) on this day, we make a visible sign of our faith and our participation in the Kingdom of God.
Some are here today who may only come to church once a year, but this is the day to come to be sure. We welcome you with the love of Christ, and as good stewards, we invite you to become a more intimate part of our faith community, so that you, too, can realize that “God is good — all the time.”

“What page, what passage of the inspired books of the Old and New Testaments is not the truest of guides for human life?” ~Saint Benedict, from the Rule of Saint Benedict (73:3)
“Easter is not sufficiently well understood if we think of it only as the time when we reaffirm our belief that Christ rose from the dead. That the historical fact of the resurrection is the keystone of the whole structure of Christian faith is still not sufficient reason why Easter should be the great feast that it is. Easter is not a day to be compared to the Fourth of July although it is in all truth the celebration of our Christian freedom. But this celebration does not merely recall the act by which we are liberated, it revives our freedom itself, in the renewal of the mystery in which we become free.” ~Excerpted from “Seasons of Celebration” by Fr. Thomas Merton, OCSO
Easter Monday, March 28 ~ The Octave of Easter
Holy Gospel: Matthew 28:8-15 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went away quickly from the tomb, fearful yet overjoyed, and ran to announce the news to his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them on their way and greeted them. They approached, embraced his feet, and did him homage. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.” While they were going, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had happened. The chief priests assembled with the elders and took counsel; then they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, telling them, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him while we were asleep.’ And if this gets to the ears of the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” The soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has circulated among the Jews to the present day.
Meditation: Have you ever asked what the basis is of our faith in the resurrection? The scriptures tell us that "faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen"(Hebrews 11:1). Faith is an entirely free gift that God makes to us. Our faith is a free assent to the whole truth which God reveals to us through his word. Faith is certain because it is based on the very word of God who cannot lie. Faith also seeks understanding. That is why God enlightens the "eyes of our hearts" that we may know what is the hope to which he has called us (Ephesians 1:18). Peter the Apostle says we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead (1 Peter 1:3). Through the gift of faith, the Lord reveals himself to those who believe in his word and he fills them with "new life in his Holy Spirit". Do you live in the joy and hope of the resurrection? And do you recognize the presence of the Risen Lord in his word, in the "breaking of the bread", and in his church, the body of Christ?
Prayer: O God, who give constant increase to your Church by new offspring, grant that your servants may hold fast in their lives to the Sacrament they have received in faith. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: Are you always prepared to meet the Risen Lord? The disciples of Jesus were as unprepared for his resurrection as they were for his death. The empty tomb made them fearful and joyful at the same time. "Where did they put the body or did he really rise just as he predicted?" Even though Jesus had spoken to them before of his death and rising, they could not believe until they saw the empty tomb and met the risen Lord. Aren't we the same? We want to see with our own eyes before we believe! The guards brought their testimony to the chief priests and elders who met the news with denial. They were resolved to not believe that Jesus had risen and they bribed the guards in the hope of keeping others from believing.
Easter Tuesday, March 29 ~ The Octave of Easter
Holy Gospel: John 20:11-18 Mary Magdalene stayed outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent over into the tomb and saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet where the Body of Jesus had been. And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to
them, “They have taken my Lord, and I don’t know where they laid him.” When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus there, but did not know it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” She thought it was the gardener and said to him, “Sir, if you carried him away, tell me where you laid him, and I will take him.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni,” which means Teacher. Jesus said to her, “Stop holding on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am going to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and then reported what he had told her.
Meditation: The resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of our hope – the hope that we will see God face to face and share in his everlasting glory and joy. “Without having seen him you love him; though you do not now see him you believe in him and rejoice with unutterable and exalted joy. As the outcome of your faith you obtain the salvation of your souls” (1 Peter 1:8-9). And so, do you recognize the Lord's presence with you, in his word, in the "breaking of the bread", and in his church, the body of Christ?
Prayer: O God, who have bestowed on us paschal remedies, endow your people with heavenly gifts, so that, possessed of perfect freedom, they may rejoice in heaven over what gladdens them now on earth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: How easy it can be to miss the Lord when our focus is on ourselves! Mary did not at first recognize the Lord because her focus was on the empty tomb and on her own grief. It took only one word from the Master, when he called her by name, for Mary to recognize him. Mary's message to the disciples, I have seen the Lord, is the very essence of Christianity. It is not enough that a Christian know about the Lord, but that we know him personally. It is not enough to argue about him, but to meet him. In the resurrection we encounter the living Lord who loves us personally and shares his glory with us. The Lord gives us "eyes of faith" to see the truth of his resurrection and victory over sin and death (Eph 1:18).
Easter Wednesday, March 30 ~ The Octave of Easter
Holy Gospel: Luke 24:13-35 That very day, the first day of the week, two of Jesus’ disciples were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus, and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. He asked them, “What are you discussing as you walk along?” They stopped, looking downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days?” And he replied to them, “What sort of things?” They said to him, “The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him. But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel; and besides all this, it is now the third day since this took place. Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his Body; they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive. Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described, but him they did not see.” And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the Scriptures. As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther. But they urged him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the Eleven and those with them who were saying, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!” Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
Meditation: St. Augustine provides a reflection on the dimness of their perception: "They were so disturbed when they saw him hanging on the cross that they forgot his teaching, did not look for his resurrection, and failed to keep his promises in mind" (Sermon 235.1). "Their eyes were obstructed, that they should not recognize him until the breaking of the bread. And thus, in accordance with the state of their minds, which was still ignorant of the truth (that the Christ would die and rise again", their eyes were
similarly hindered. It was not that the truth himself was misleading them, but rather that they were themselves unable to perceive the truth." (From The Harmony of the Gospels, 3.25.72) How often do we fail to recognize the Lord when he speaks to our hearts and opens his mind to us? The Risen Lord is ever ready to speak his word to us and to give us understanding of his ways. Do you listen attentively to the Word of God and allow his word to change and transform you?
Prayer: O God, who gladden us year by year with the solemnity of the Lord's Resurrection, graciously grant that, by celebrating these present festivities, we may merit through them to reach eternal joys. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Contemplation: We often wonder how it would have been difficult for the disciples to recognize the risen Lord. To put it simply, Jesus' death scattered his disciples and shattered their hopes and dreams. They had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. They saw the cross as defeat and could not comprehend the empty tomb until the Lord appeared to them and gave them understanding. Jesus chided the disciples on the road to Emmaus for their slowness of heart to believe what the scriptures had said concerning the Messiah. They did not recognize the risen Jesus until he had broken bread with them. Do you recognize the Lord in his word and in the breaking of the bread?
Easter Thursday, March 31 ~ The Octave of Easter
Holy Gospel: Luke 24:35-48 The disciples of Jesus recounted what had taken place along the way, and how they had come to recognize him in the breaking of bread. While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them. He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.”
Meditation: Isn’t amazing how much we are like the apostles? We won’t believe unless we can see with our own eyes. The gospels attest to the reality of the resurrection. Jesus goes to great lengths to assure his disciples that he is no mere ghost or illusion. He shows them the marks of his crucifixion and he explains how the scriptures foretold his death and rising. Jerome, an early church bible scholar, comments: "As he showed them real hands and a real side, he really ate with his disciples; really walked with Cleophas; conversed with men with a real tongue; really reclined at supper; with real hands took bread, blessed and broke it, and was offering it to them...Do not put the power of the Lord on the level with the tricks of magicians, so that he may appear to have been what he was not, and may be thought to have eaten without teeth, walked without feet, broken bread without hands, spoken without a tongue, and showed a side which had no ribs." (From a letter to Pammachius against John of Jerusalem 34, 5th century)
Prayer: O God, who have united the many nations in confessing your name, grant that those reborn in the font of Baptism may be one in the faith of their hearts and the homage of their deeds. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: A central teaching of the gospel is the cross; but it does not stop there. Through the cross Jesus defeated our enemies – death and Satan and won pardon for our sins. His cross is the door to heaven and the key to paradise. The way to glory is through the cross. When the disciples saw the risen Lord they disbelieved for joy! How can death lead to life, the cross to victory? Jesus shows us the way and he gives us the power to overcome sin and despair, and everything else that would stand in the way of his love and truth. Just as the first disciples were commissioned to bring the good news of salvation to all the nations, so, we, too, are called to be witnesses of the resurrection of Jesus Christ to all who live on the face of the earth. Do you witness the joy of the gospel to those around you?
Easter Friday, April 1 ~ The Octave of Easter
Holy Gospel: John 21:1-14 Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way. Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We also will come with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” They answered him, “No.” So he said to them, “Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish. So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards, dragging the net with the fish. When they climbed out on shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.” So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore full of one hundred fifty-three large fish. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast.” And none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they realized it was the Lord. Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish. This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead.
Meditation: Why didn’t the apostles immediately recognize the Lord when he greeted them at the Sea of Tiberias? John gives us a clue. He states that Peter decided to return to his home district of Galilee, very likely so he could resume his fishing career. Peter was discouraged and didn’t know what to do after the tragedy of Jesus’ death! He went back to his previous career out of despair and uncertainty. The other apostles followed him back to Galilee. When was the last time Peter was commanded to let down his net after a futile night of fishing? It was at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry in Galilee when the Lord dramatically approached Peter in his fishing boat after a futile night of fishing and commanded him to lower his nets (see Luke 5:4-11). After the miraculous catch, Jesus told Peter that he would be ‘catching people” for the kingdom of God. Now Jesus repeats the same miracle. John, the beloved disciple, is the first to recognize the Lord. Peter impulsively leaps from the boat and runs to the Lord. Do you run to the Lord when you meet setbacks, disappointments, or trials? The Lord is ever ready to renew us in faith and to give us fresh hope in his promises.
Prayer: Almighty ever-living God, who gave us the Paschal Mystery in the covenant you established for reconciling the human race, so dispose our minds, we pray, that what we celebrate by professing the faith we may express in deeds. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Contemplation: Skeptics who disbelieve the resurrection say the disciples only saw a vision of Jesus. The gospels, however, give us a vivid picture of the reality of the resurrection. Jesus went out of his way to offer his disciples various proofs of his resurrection – that he is real and true flesh, not just a spirit or ghost. In his third appearance to the apostles, after Jesus performed the miraculous catch of fish, he prepared a breakfast and ate with them. Peter’s prompt recognition of the Master and exclamation “It is the Lord!” stands in sharp contrast to his previous denial of his Master during the night of Jesus’ arrest. The Lord Jesus reveals himself to each of us as we open our hearts to receive his word. Do you recognize the Lord's presence in your life? Do you receive his word with faith? Are you open to conforming your mind and heart to that of Jesus Christ, so that you can follow him with love as a true disciple?
