BEYOND THE NUMBERS

There are many of us that when faced with long columns of numbers, our eyes have a ten-dency to glaze over. I’m afraid that I didn’t inherit my father’s gift for accounting, which provided for our family’s upbringing and college education for all of us. Certainly the graph and pie charts help some, but what is even more helpful is the counsel I receive from Don Colonna our business manager, and the members of the Finance Committee. Their knowl-edge and experience have been a great help to me in beginning my time here as pastor. Certainly knowing the financial state of St. Mary of the Woods Church is important to all of us. The members of this faith community entrust a considerable part of their treasure to our parish leadership so that we might preach the Good News, educate our children, care for the poor, and provide many other ministries inside and outside our community. Doing all this in a time of economic insecurity makes this task not only more difficult but also more neces-sary. As you can see, the deficit that we experienced last year has been cut by more than 90%. This was accomplished before my arrival here due to your generosity. I am most grateful that you have “dug deeper” in order to keep our future secure. I am also grateful to all those in leadership who have found ways to make our funds go further. Through the implementation of new tuition and aid management systems, accounting software and the reduction of staff and staffing hours, we have been able to reduce our expenses. As you know, we will break ground to complete our building program in June, 2011. I will be very happy for our church, school and parish hall to be handicapped accessible, to have more and improved space for our students in our school and religious education program and to enlarge and improve our church lobby. These and other parish improvements have been on the “drawing table” for some time, and I am excited that the time has come for them to be completed. This will not come without cost, but I believe the cost will be reasonable when you consider the benefit we will share. Next month, I will be speaking to our parish about the practice of stewardship. This topic has to do with the the way we use and care for all the gifts that God has given us and not just what we contribute to our parish. It is not my favorite topic on which to speak, and it may not be your favorite topic to hear, but it is one that is important to the life and future of our faith community. I hope I have helped you to see what lies “beyond the numbers.” I am most grateful for all that you share with our parish in terms of your time, talent and treasure. May God continue to bless St. Mary of the Woods and all that we do in God’s name. Peace, Father Pat

Financial Notes

Saint Mary of the Woods Parish has experienced a remarkable rebound after recording only a $37 thousand dollar deficit for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2010. One year previous, the parish and school recorded a $546 thousand dollar deficit in ordinary income.

When comparing the parish results to last year regarding other income and expenses (such as capital collections, insurance recoveries and capital improvements) the parish experienced a net reduction of nearly 92%. This can be explained, in part, as the result of capital campaign pledges ending while capital campaign project spending started.

The Saint Mary of the Woods balance sheet showed assets increased 3.0% when compared to the same time period a year ago. The assets listed include restricted endowment funds and capital campaign funds which are not available for general parish operations.

Gluten Sensitivity

Studies show that Celiac disease, gluten intolerance, is the most common genetic autoimmune disorder in the United States. If you suffer from this disease, there is no need to not receive Communion. We do have gluten-free hosts. We have some already consecrated and in the Tabernacle.

We would like you to identify yourself before Mass begins so both the priest and the sacristan can ensure

there is a host available for you. If needed, the priest will consecrate a gluten free host for you in a separate vessel during the liturgy. We ask that you wait until Communion is almost complete and approach the Tabernacle to receive Communion. Either the sacristan or priest can accommodate you.

KOLBE HOUSE JAIL MINISTRY

Dear Fr. Pat, Please express my gratitude to the prople of St. Mary of the Woods Parish for the generous $645.00 donation to Kolbe House. Our service to those in jail and in prison is to be present to these men and women who are incarcerated. Without judgement we listen to the stories of their lives. The Gospel man-date I was in prison and you came to visit me is the foundation of all that we do. We have come to realize that almost every parish has someone or knows someone in jail or in prison. If we can ever be of assistance, please know that we are at your service. We ask that you remember us and those whom we serve in prayer. Again, thank you for your gift. I remain Gratefully yours, Rev. Arturo Pérez Rodriguez Director

Dear Fr. Pat and our Brothers and Sisters in Christ at St. Mary of the Woods Parish, I would like to thank you for your ongoing generous support of the community of St. Sylvester. I would like to apologize for taking so long to write since last time. Please allow me to give you an update on the many wonderful things happening here through your support. Our food pantry has continued to serve the local com-munity. We continue to serve about 296 families (about 756 persons) a month. While we cannot give enough food to each family to sustain them an entire month, we do give them a helping hand to make it through. Each family leaves with several grocery bags of food. We also help distribute applications for food stamps each month. The poor of our neighborhood owe you a debt of gratitude. We have additionally been blessed with the presence of a community/parish nurse sponsored by Advocate Health Care. She not only assists parishioners without health insurance and directs to free resources, but also provides basic blood pressure screenings and other ba-sic services. She has been a great resource to some of our elderly parishioners who do not understand their medications or how to file certain Medicare docu-ments. With your support, we have been able to pro-vide her with space and basic office supplies to do her work. Like any older church in the city, we continue to care for our aging buildings. In particular, this summer we noticed a burning smell in the choir loft. As it turns out, there was cloth covered wiring that had never been removed and had deteriorated to the point of starting to burn. (Most of the wiring had been replaced after a fire in the 1980s.) With your generosity we were able to rewire that part of the choir loft to protect the church building. On behalf of the entire community of St. Sylvester, please allow me to thank you for what you have done for us. While we deeply appreciate your financial assis-tance, we are also very grateful for your prayers. Apart from God's grace we are unable to thrive, and your prayers for us have been a source of grace this year. May God bless you for kindness.

Best Regards, Rev. Paul C. Stein Pastor, St. Sylvester Parish
