Happy Fall from SESSC Executive Director Lynda GreeneDear SESSC Family,

It’s hard to believe 2018 is drawing to a close. And what a year it was! 2018 has been a year of incredible successes!

Our center successfully separated from Sound Generations and is proudly standing as a free and independent nonprofit senior center. This took an incredible amount of sweat equity from our board and staff, but we had the fortitude to see the project to completion. I am so grateful for the support I personally received from our board and our amazing staff. I could not have gotten through the process of separating without their unwavering support!

Karma is definitely working in our favor! SESSC wrote its first grant to the City of Seattle for funding and we are proud to be the recipient of funds from the City of Seattle for four years, beginning in 2019. As a result of the King County Levy, SESSC was also the recipient of a grant for capital improvements around our Center.

We continue to offer a wide variety of services for our seniors, and our Center continues to be full of fun, activities that are worthwhile, relevant information and delicious lunches. My personal favorite is the conversations that occur just in passing or at lunch: a silly joke, words of inspiration from one senior to another, or a recommendation to branch out and try a new activity. Then too, we are so proud to offer social services, an opportunity to have a confidential conversation with our social worker to problem solve around some of the challenges that life throws us as we age.

As we head into 2019, please don’t hesitate to connect with staff, including me. I will continue to have our quarterly “Coffee with the Executive Director” gatherings. The information that is shared is invaluable.

Please take some time to check out the contents of this newsletter and share it with your friends and family members who might benefit from our programs and services – We all need to stay active. One way to do this is to participate in the activities we offer. Check them out, come on in, and surprise yourself by trying something new.

Finally, as we enter 2019, I look forward to experiencing another incredible year with the best staff and board of directors!

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Happy Fall from SESSC Board President Barbara ChamberlainDear Friends,

This has been and continues to be a very busy year for SESSC. There are many who deserve a big “Thank You.”

Thank you to Lynda and our staff. They have been involved in submitting multiple grant proposals while continuing to plan and oversee the day-to-day operation of the Center. They are like magicians!

Thank you to our volunteers. They continue to help make the Center operate efficiently and cost effectively. In addition to the regular activities, volunteers have also been involved in the grant applications and are members of various Board committees.

Thank you to John Charles, Chairman of the Fundraising Committee. With input from staff and members of the Center, they have developed a new Logo and Mission Statement. These were presented to and approved by the Board last month.

Thank you to Gisela Baxter, Chairperson of the Building and Property Committee. Gisela sees to replacements and repairs that may not be noticea-ble but keep things running smoothly. Have you noticed that the windows have all been washed inside and out? Have you noticed that the leaking windows in the atrium have been replaced? The locks on many of the doors have also been repaired so they now work smoothly.

Thank you to SESSC staff and volunteers, to The Brighton involvement, Windermere Mt. Baker Office, to the Lonnie Williams, Kenny Mandell, and the other musicians, and to all who attended our Night Out event, to make it the great success that it was!

Thank you to everyone involved in the grant writing. We have been awarded $90,000 from the King County Levy for a variety of projects. The roll-up window in the kitchen has already been replaced. Before the end of the year, we should have several very visible improvements and other less visible ones.

Thank you to all our members and participants. It is you who keep the staff and volunteers inspired to continue our efforts to make SESSC the best senior center around. I am pleased and proud to be part of such a vibrant organization.

Lynda Greene, Executive Director

Senior Housing, Medicare/Medicaid, Support Groups, Emergency Assistance, Caregiver Support, Long-term Care Options, Home Care Options Through study that focuses on helping older adults with depression, I became certified as a Problem Solving Treatment Psychotherapist. Problem Solving Treatment or PST is an evidence-based therapy proving to help older adults with depression. Through nine weekly sessions, you work with your therapist on breaking down problems into achievable action steps. By the end of the nine weeks, the goal is for the participant to have gained the skills to help with their problems. Solving one’s problems can be directly linked to a decrease in symptoms of depression. Many seniors experience symptoms of depression, and PST can be one way to help make a change in your life. We Need Your Help, Especially with the Lunch Program

By the time you read this newsletter, there may be another volunteer in the house. Be sure to extend a warm welcome and thank you to our new volunteers, including the ones not on this list. Let’s keep it going strong! And we always need new volunteers.

Please consider becoming a volunteer in the following areas:

THANKS VOLUNTEERS - WE COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU!

Community Dining Lunch Program: Because participation in our lunch program has grown dramatically, Sharon Smith, our Master Chef, needs help in the kitchen with a variety of tasks, like food preparation and washing dishes. One of the perks of being a volunteer in the Community Dining Lunch program is that you don’t have to pay for lunch.

Volunteers for Wednesday Bingo: We need volunteers for Bingo!

Front Desk Receptionist: Our list of receptionists has grown critically short and your help is greatly appreciated. Receptionists have the special and distinct honor of being the first face new people see when they visit our Center for the first time. Use your warm smile to greet people, both familiar and new.

Special Events: One of the ways the SESSC is able to provide the activities you enjoy is by raising money through our various special events such as the Lifetime Member Dinner, Auctions, and Rainbow Bingo. Be a part of the group that truly makes it happen at the Southeast Seattle Senior Center.

Cheap Chickadee Thrift Shop: We need volunteers! Be a part of the team that plays a major role in providing revenue for the Center.

There are other volunteer opportunities. Stop by Kate’s office or call her at (206) 722-0317 to find the volunteer opportunity that is right for you. New idea to try: volunteer with a friend to make it even more fun!

ATTENTION VOLUNTEERSSESSC volunteers invest their time, hard work, and loving care and are committed to forming a strong community and welcoming culture at our Center. They keep us strong. We have new volunteers who keep our Center going:

Emily Weissman - Emily comes as an activities support person with one of our members. But she doesn’t leave it there. Emily returns to the center, plus works from home, to look for ways to fundraise for our programs. Thanks Emily, we appreciate the help!

Vicky Fisher - Vicky has chosen to volunteer with us as her retirement activity and we are so glad – she is a real asset in the kitchen: reliable, nice, and she can cook!

Celia Hanson - Celia is entering high school this fall but before she does, she is giving back to her community, helping serve lunch and selling snacks at bingo. Thanks Celia, glad to have you here.

Harry Hanson - Harry is Celia’s little brother but an interesting guy all by himself! He teaches origami with our seniors and helps sell snacks at bingo on Wednesdays. Yay Harry!

Jerry Farmer - That Jerry is a helpful guy, willing to lend a hand as needed. Always glad when Jerry is in the house! He has been known to brew coffee for members and participants to enjoy in the morning.

Dawn Crownover - Down is a businesswoman in our community, always on the go! But she takes time to serve on our Fundraising committee, networking in the community and generally helping plan fundraising activities. Thanks Dawn.
