INTRODUCTION

Pandion is an instant messaging service available to Facilities Services Division (FSD) staff. Simple to use with features like custom emoticons, avatars, and text markup.

INSTALLATION/PROFILE SETUP

1. Go to http://vjer.lausd.net, select “How to install Pandion (Jabber)”.

2. Click on “Download”. You may want to print the instructions for guidance.

3. Click “Run”.

4. Click “Run” again.

5. Pandion Setup Screen appears. Click “Next”.

6. Click “I Agree”.

7. Click “Next”

8. Click “Install”.

Installation begins.

9. Select “Finish” to complete setup.

The icon below will appear on the desktop.

The icon also appears in the tool box lower right corner.

LOGGING IN

1. Select “Sign Up” for first time users then continue with step 2. Previous users can log in (i.e., [email protected]) next to “Address” field, enter a password, click “Log In”; skip to INSTANT MESSAGING (CHATTING).

2. Click “Next”.

3. Enter your full name, click “Next”.

4. Enter information as seen below, replacing your own username and password.

Server: Erase text currently in field, if any, and enter “vjer.lausd.net” as seen below. Username: Enter your own email name (john.doe) Password/Confirm: Enter a password (must match)

5. Click “Next” when finished.

6. Account is being registered. Click “next” when registration is complete.

7. Profile has been completed. Click “Finish”.

ADD SOMEONE TO CONTACT LIST

1. This dialog box will appear once the profile set up is complete. To add to your contact list, click “Add someone to your contact list”.

2. To search for a user enter the full address of the user you want added to your contact list. For example, type next to “Username” [email protected], then click “Next”.

3. Or use the second option to search for a person. Click on “I want to search for someone”, then click “Next”.

User is then found and added to your contact list. Select “Finish” or “Add Another Person”.

4. Sample of a contact list below. If no names are displayed, click the “+”, it will

turn into a dash “-“and will then display any names in the contact list.

Note: “Awaiting Request” dialog box appears on the computer of the user you are trying to add to your contact list. This indicates that the user is waiting for the add to be accepted or denied. Once accepted by the other user, your name will be added to their contact list and theirs to your contact list. Below is a sample of the message.

INSTANT MESSAGING (CHATTING)

1. To begin chatting, click on desired user to begin chatting.

This is the dialog box that allows a user to instantly send a message to another user.

2. Type message in the second box and then click “Send” or simply just hit the “enter” key.

Below is a breakdown of the menu bar on the Main Menu. Included in the menu bar is File, Actions, Tools and Help.

My Status Change the status message which appears under your name in the contact list. Also allows you to notify users your status: Available, Busy, Away, Invisible (allows users to be active in Pandion without other users knowing)

HOW TO’S

Below are options available in the new Jabber and steps to achieve them.

o Send a message: Click on the user’s name or right-click on the user’s name and select Message. Type the message in the second box and click Send or press Enter.

o Status Change (Away, Available, etc.): Select File, My Status, then select either Available, Busy,Away or Invisible . To add a message next to your status, select File, My Status, Change my status message, enter your message you want to appear next to your status. Note: this message will be the same for all status (Available, Busy, etc.).

o Broadcast a Message to all: Right-click on the group, select Send a Broadcast

Message, type message and select either Normal Message or Alert Notification. Alert will pop up no matter what settings. Once read, the message will go away. Normal will be similar to someone sending you a message. If you have your message pop up turned off, the message won’t be seen until the user selects it.

o Add a Contact: Select Actions, Add a Contact. To search for a user, select I

want to search for someone, then click on Next, enter a name or email address and click Search. Then click on the user desired. To search for a user that you know the username, select I already know the person’s instant messaging address, and enter their name (ex: [email protected]), select Finish.

o Save/remove conversation/messages: Begin a new chat box for that user. In

the menu, click File, Message History. To delete, click on the trash can or select Erase icon, click Print to print the entire conversation or to save click on the floppy icon.

o Set the appearance of Pandion: Tools, Settings (Auto-Away, Blocking,

Connection, Privacy, Sound)

o Create a private chat room: Actions, select Create a Conference Room. Enter

data as seen below. Conference room name: Enter desired name. Conference server address: conference.localhost Invitation Message: Enter desired message. Invite these people: check those to invite.

o Invite user to Chatroom: Right-click on user’s name, select Invite To Conference Room, select room name or Create a new room. Follow above to fill out rest of form.

o Save your message: Messages are automatically saved. Refer to Save/remove

conversation/messages.

o Groups (Move To or Create New): Right-click on the user’s name, select an “Move To” or “Copy To”, then select existing group or select Create A New Group, type in the new group name.

o Block a person from emailing you: Open the chat box of that user, click

Actions, Contact, Block. To remove it, Actions, Contact, Block again (block should have a check next to it). Also, right-click on user name and select Block.

o Change the password: Select Actions, Change My Password, enter the old and

new password, click OK.

o Edit your Profile: Select Actions, Edit My Profile, enter desired data.

o Change Picture: Select Actions, Change my avatar.

o Sound: Select Tools, Settings, change as desired. o Emoticons (adding more): Right-click on any user name and select Message,

click on Emoticons. Click the three dots bottom right corner. Click More Emoticons. Click Install on any desired set of emoticons, click Close. Repeat for each set of emoticons desired.
