1History Why? Two factors prompted teachers to evaluate what they were doing in the classroom, the writing of their curriculum and the philosophy of education review. 2History Why? Part of CAJ Philosophy of education, is Students learn best within a nurturing environment which fosters an enduring joy in learning and the desire to honor Christ through learning; and where teachers pray for students and use biblical principles and sound, current educational research and practice to determine what students learn, how they are taught, and how they show what they know. This flows into Equipping students to impact the world for Christ. In order to figure out what students know, teachers looked at authentic assessment3Teachers read articles and did a book study on assessment and evaluation. Teachers discussed what authentic assessment is and how can authentic assessment be used to help them understand what the students know. Teacher researched4The teachers looked at what assessment for learning really means. Why do we give grades? What do the grades really mean?

Teachers researched5As part of the discussion to figure out authentic assessment, the teachers watched a video series by Ken OConnor Fixes for Broken GradesDecision was made to separate behavior standards (Approaches to Learning) from academic reporting. In 20116Teachers looked at the CAJ adopted standards for the subjects they taught.Teachers determined how they would gather evidence to show what the students know. In 20127What will this look like?Teachers reported on the standards rather than giving one letter grade for the subject. In 20138Beginning just starting to learn.Developing showing some understanding of the standard.Meets Standard demonstrates understanding of the standard.Exceeds Standard can connect the understanding of the standard with other information or apply the knowledge of the standard in different situations. No Evidence the teacher has no evidence of your childs understanding.Descriptors used for reporting9Your childs assessments are not averaged. We report on what your child has shown the teacher, what he/she knows. An example: For a standard such as Can add three digit numbers with three digit numbers, there may be six assessments which results are, Beginning, Beginning, Beginning, Developing, Meets Standard, and Meets Standard. The teacher realizes the student knows how to add three digit number with three digit numbers, so on the report card, the child will receive a meets standard. There is no averaging. The teacher is reporting what the student has shown to understand at the time of the report.
