WE WANT TO KEEP EVERYONE HEALTHY

Due to being in the middle of flu and cold season, in an effort to keep everyone healthy, we will not give people in the congregation the cup for Holy Communion until Holy Thursday. Also we will not encourage people to give the handshake for the sign of peace, but rather invite people to give their best smile and a wave of the hand with the words: "Peace be with you." And the response is: "And also with you." (Thank you for helping us in our effort to keep everyone healthy. Please note that the Church teaches that in receiving the Conse-crated Bread we receive both the Precious Body and Blood of Christ.

We also want to say “Thank You” to Scout Pack 106 and their leaders for providing the 14 beautiful food baskets each containing a Stop & Shop Gift Card to assist with Christmas Dinner. Thank you also to those who made donations of cash or gift cards to share with our families. We have much to be thankful for - YOU!!

February 2nd, 2020 The Presentation of the Lord

EMBRACING THE REFINING FIRE OF CHRIST

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of Je-sus in the Temple. St. Sophronius says of this Feast: “The Mother of God, the most pure Virgin, carried the true light in her arms and brought him to those who lay in darkness. We too should carry a light for all to see and

reflect the radiance of the true light as we hasten to meet him. The light has come and has shown upon a world enveloped in shadows; the Dayspring from on high has visited us and given light to those who lived in darkness.” (Referring to Christ as “the Dayspring from on high” reminds us of Zachariah’s canticle when he regains his speech.) In our First Reading from the Prophet Malachi, we are told: “And suddenly there will come to the temple the Lord whom you seek, and the messenger of the covenant whom you desire…He will sit refining and purifying… like gold and silver that they may offer due sacrifice to the Lord.” We might ask: “How does the silversmith refine and purify? He does this by putting the silver in the hottest part of the flame. But he must not overdo it or the silver will turn black. And how does he know it is ready? It is ready when he can see his own reflec-tion in it.” The Lord purifies us by the fire of His Love, which burns away every speck of selfishness in us. And when He sees His own reflection in us, He knows we are ready. Bishop Barron talks about as the three paths to holiness: “Finding the Center (of your life) in Christ, Knowing You are a Sinner, and Realizing your Life is Not About You. These three paths are found in today’s Gospel. One of the most tender scenes of Luke’s Gospel is when Mary and Joseph bring Jesus to the temple to dedi-cate Him to God. Simeon, who had grown old while patiently waiting for God to fulfill his promises that he would see the Messiah before he died, now embraces a tiny newborn infant, who is God incarnate. Origen, an early Church father, says that if you want to hold Jesus, you too ought to embrace him with your own hands. Christian discipleship is nothing less than our embracing Jesus Christ, the incarnate Word of God, who has already embraced us. As Pope Benedict XVI has repeated a number of times, to be a Christian is to enter into an intensely personal friendship with Jesus. Origen teaches us that the Christian embrace of Jesus is not an abstraction that occurs in our imagination. We embrace Jesus in concrete ways, with our own hands: we truly em-brace him in our service of others, most especially the poor; we em-brace him in our spouses, children, parents, siblings and friends; and, above all else we embrace him in the sacraments, especially the Eucha-rist, that is, in Holy Communion when we hold God in our hands. Simeon embracing Jesus is the experience of every Christian, whose heart burns with Love for Christ and truly becomes what he or she receives The Christian journey is one of increasingly seeing Jesus in everyone we meet and experience the presence of His Spirit everywhere we go. And along the way we travel not alone, but with many companions who, like Jesus, realize that we are all brothers and sisters, going home to the Father.

INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is for adults who de-sire to become fully initiated members of the Catholic Church. The goal of the process is full, conscious and active participation in an exciting life with Jesus within the Catholic Church. RCIA helps adults grow in their relationship with God, become familiar with Catholic teachings and practices, get acquainted with the faith community and get involved in service within the community. Many people who want to join the Catholic Church have already been baptized in another Christian Church. They do not need to be rebaptized. They participate in the process with those never baptized to famil-iarize themselves with the Roman Catholic Tradition. Others may have been baptized in the Catholic Church and need to complete the sacraments of initiation by receiving First Eu-charist and/or Confirmation. If you know of someone who might be interested in learning more about RCIA, please con-tact Darleen Farland at [email protected].
