The air was cool and crisp as we set out to follow in the steps of Jesusa journey that has been trod by millions of faithful people from every corner of the world for nearly two thousand years. We agreed that day not to distract ourselves with picture-taking, so I don’t have any photos of our trek. What I remember is seeing and hearing people whom I love taking turns carrying a cross and reading the Gospel account of our Lord's trial, and suffering, and death as we walked along the streets and alleyways of Jerusalem. I also remember seeing all the other passersby who scarcely noticed us. This was a powerful epiphany for me, as someone in our group commented that it was probably no different on the day that Jesus carried his cross through the streets. Roman crucifixion was common, which made Jesus a common criminal in the eyes of the stateand of everyone else who did not view him as the Son of God. We know that very few people stuck around as he suffered and died except for the soldiers who had to stay; his mother, Mary; and only one disciple, John. On Wednesday nights during Lent we will gather for worship at 6:00, followed by dinner in Stockstill Hall at 6:35. After we have had time for eating and fellowship, Dorian and I will offer a presentation each week about the Stations of the Cross. Our goal is to share this ancient Christian practice of praying and reflecting upon the love of God we experience through Christ’s sacrifice on Good Friday. As a result, I hope you will feel equipped to utilize our new Stations of the Cross in the nave of the Church as a tool for your prayer and devotion during this season of Lent. We don’t have to travel to Jerusalem to walk the way of the cross, pray, and remember the love of God on Good Friday. Indeed, for nearly two thousand years faithful Christians from every corner of the world have done so in the churches and neighborhoods where they have lived. Let’s be honest. Most people will not choose this journey, or even choose to pay attention to it. The Gospel is very clear on this point. Yet, for those of us who have pledged our faith and trust in Jesus, we are already on this journey. We already recognize the contours of faith, hope, and love that are lived out in the way of Jesus, and we seek to follow these footsteps in our own lives. So, during this 40-day journey of Lent I hope you will delve more deeply into the way of the cross, for we are not distracted passersby. We are members of the Jesus movement, which is nothing less than the compassionate movement of God’s sacrificial love in the public sphere for all to see. God bless youand your journeyduring these holy days of preparation for Easter,

Dear People of St. Peter’s,

The sun was shining brightly the morning I joined other pilgrims from St. Peter’s, along with Christians from several other continents, to walk the way of the cross in Jerusalem. The air was cool and crisp as we set out to follow in the steps of Jesus—a journey that has been trod by millions of faithful people from every corner of the world for nearly two thousand years. The Season of Lent is here! A season of preparation... A time to prepare for our Lord's passion and resurrection. In planning your Lenten Journey, you are invited to daily reading and reflection, a time for praying and preparing to celebrate Easter. Lenten daily devotional booklets are available in the narthex and throughout the church:

Hope-Full Living - The daily devotions in this LARGE PRINT special edition provides older adults with reflections to ponder Christ's journey to the cross and empty tomb for their salvation and encourage them to faithfully share with younger generations the reason for the hope they have in the crucified and risen Savior.

Living the Gospel Life: The Season of Lent The daily devotions in this booklet highlight the concepts of being sent, demonstrating faith in action, and being mission-minded each day of Lent.

Jesus and the Gospels Devotions for Lent - This booklet follows the story of Jesus' passion, from his call to cross-bearing discipleship to the events of the passion narrative and the discovery of the empty tomb. These devotions draw on the diversity that comes from having four canonical gospels, thus providing a richer understanding of our Savior's sacrifice for us.

Be sure to pick up a Lent 2017 Children's calendar, which is a colorfully illustrated and spiritually enriching one-page calendar filled with prayers, thought-starters, activities, and numerous suggestions for Bible reading. Also available are a selection of previous year's booklets

St. Peter’s Children Making Lenten

Gardens at Sunday School

Dedicating our Kneelers Recently, St. Peter's received a generous gift enabling us to refurbish the kneelers in our nave. This gift has been given to the glory of God, and with thanksgiving for the men and women of the Armed Forces who have served--or are serving--our nation, for the civic employees who serve our communities with rescue and protection, and for their families who share in the sacrifice of these vocations.

We are grateful for this gift, and also for the volunteers who removed and reinstalled all 90 kneelers to facilitate this project

New Faces at St. Peter’s

Kathy and Vincent Greenan

23 Tormek Way Greenville SC 29615 Phone: 540-598-8951

Kathy and Vincent moved to Greenville from Smith Mountain Lake in rural Virginia. They had a large house and wanted to downsize. Upon retirement, they wanted to move closer to friends and family. They visited St. Peter’s and were delighted to find the same kind of “wonderful accepting community” and church that they left in Virginia. Karen said they are exploring how to participate in church activities and outreach. Because Kathy was an RN with a background in counseling, she feels that Stephen Ministries might be a good fit for her. Vincent retired from federal government procurement relating to drone systems and helicopters. Vincent and Karen love to play golf, travel, and read. Karen also loves to cook and entertain friends. Please take time to welcome this friendly couple to our St. Peter’s family.

CPR/First Aid/AED Training The Safety Committee has identified a need to get people trained and certified to make St. Peters a safer place. We are offering a CPR/First Aid/AED Training and Certification on Saturday, March 11, 2017. The class will be held at the church in Stockstill Hall from 9:30 AM until 3:30 PM. Lunch will be provided. We would like ushers, Sunday school leaders, staff and other group leaders to take advantage of this training. The only requirement is you must be 16 years old and physically able to administer CPR, which would require kneeling. Please consider this and sign up to participate. You can contact the church office to sign up. If you have questions, contact Bill Hawkins at 371-9794.

Please Welcome Jan Rhodes as

St. Peter’s new Coordinator of

Children, Youth, and Family

Ministries!

At the January meeting, St. Peter’s vestry restored a part-time position to our staffing plan for 2017. We re-established a staff role to help manage and coordinate the many details and communications associated with our expanding ministries with children, youth, and families.

I am very pleased to announce that Jan Rhodes has accepted a call to this role. She is a very active, faithful parishioner who recently completed a second term as St. Peter’s Junior Warden. Jan has a comprehensive awareness of the ministries of our parish, and she also has relationships with many of the children, youth, and parents who are engaged in the aspects of our parish life and mission which this coordinating role supports. Please join me in welcoming Jan to this work and ministry! Blessings, Furman +

New St. Peter’s Instant Church Directory

Our current church directory is out of date and the Communications Committee and the Vestry have approved a new digital directory for the members of St. Peter’s. We are in the process of updating member information in order to proceed with the new directory. If you have not completed the Directory update form, please contact the church office to get a form. Further information will be provided in the near future concerning how your pictures can be taken at the church or provided by members. Pictures are not necessary in order for your contact information to be put in the directory.

Pet Cemetery

If you’re wondering what to do with your pet’s ashes after you have had time to adapt to his/her loss, there is an attractive and restful pet cemetery in St. Peter’s back yard. Placed at the pavilion where the Blessing of the Animals is held each St. Francis Day, it is convenient for burying the ashes as a private or liturgical event. There is General Convention-approved liturgy that Father Furman+ is happy to use

at a mutually convenient time. Or you with your family can prayerfully bury the ashes on your own. There is no charge, no set formality, no permission to be granted. St. Peter’s is happy to afford a location that has been set aside and blessed for use as the last resting place for beloved pets.

There is also a memorial album for you to use a page to document your pet’s former life with pictures, notes, tags, etc. If this appeals to you, Donna Jones can help you get started. 268-5766 or [email protected].

College Care Packages The ECW will be sending pre-exam care packages to St. Peter’s youth in college. If you have a child away from home in college, please fill out the form and return it to the large envelope posted on the ECW section of the bulletin board in the lower narthex. If you have any questions or would like to help, please call Louisa Wagoner at 879-2709. Student’s Name:________________________________
