Dear Fellow Parishioners,

We would like to take a moment to wish you and your family a Merry and Blessed Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. As we look forward to the New Year, we would like to take a minute to reflect on all we have accomplished this year.

We are happy to have been able to donate a per-manent Christmas tree that will stand in the Plaza on Broadway and West Broadway all year long. The hard work of our Past Grand Knights, Robert Williams, Oli-ver Giannotti and Joseph Lentini helped to make this a proud moment for our council and our parish. We were all proud as we watched it being its lighting earlier this month.

We held community events like the Basketball Shootout, Easter Egg Roll, bread for the Feast of St. Joseph, Halloween Gift Bag, Blood Drives, Mother’s Day Roses and a Communion Breakfast. Our Youth Council hosted dances for the youth of our community. This month we set up the Nativity and provided lights for the Christmas tree and bushes outside of St. Joseph’s and of course we continue to host the Christmas party following the pageant. We were able to donate 6 cases of coats for children in our community.

In May we held our sixth annual golf outing which raised over $15,000 for various charities includ-ing Camp Anchor, South Nassau Hospital Cancer Re-search and Long Island Council for the Blind. In Octo-ber we held our Annual Dinner and Dance which hon-ored Mr. James Giordano for his many years work and dedication to St. Joseph’s Parish and the community and our Past Grand Knight Robert Williams.

As you can see we do many great things for our parish and community and we could not do it without your continued support, both physically and financially. We hope that you will continue to support our efforts to help us build a better Catholic community here in the Five Towns.

May God continue to bless you and your family and all those you love.

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA

Fourth Sunday of Advent Imagine how Mary felt at the birth of

Jesus: excited, awed, frightened. Deep faith was her light in the darkness, for Jesus was born during the night of

the year when darkness is the longest. In faith is found the real,

lasting, and deep joy of Christmas.

. Thank you, Thank you,

Thank you… To all the parishioners who

donated a Christmas Angel to our neighbors in need. Once again the

Vincentian volunteers were overwhelmed by the response.

We wish you a very

Merry Christmas season and Happy and Healthy New Year.

Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish St. Vincent - DePaul Society

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul and Outreach would like to wish all our friends and family of Our Lady of Good Counsel a very Blessed Merry Christmas. As we prepare for Christmas we pray for the grace to be like Joseph, so that: For those who live in doubt, our lives will be a sign of faith. For those who live in fear and oppression, our lives will be a sign of hope. For those who do not experience God’s love, our lives will be a sign of charity. Amen God Bless Everyone Our Lady of Good Counsel’s Society of St. Vincent de Paul & Outreach

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Fourth Sunday of Advent Cuarto Domingo de Adviento

ECHOING MARY’S DECISION The angel Gabriel today confronts Mary with a mystery. The mystery of salvation in Christ is not a mystery that is solved, but a reality beyond our comprehension that we must choose to enter into. In the liturgy of the Eastern Church, everyone waits to see if Mary will enter into the mystery: God waits, Adam and Eve and all the souls of the dead who long for paradise wait, angels wait for new heavenly companions. And there is much rejoicing when her decision is “yes.” We have less dramatic choices offered to us, but the mystery of our salvation in Christ is by no means “solved.” We may understand it a bit better due to Mary’s “yes.” We may be a bit closer to it through the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. But it still remains a mystery to which we all must give our own “yes.” Soon we will be singing “O come, let us adore him.” May our Advent prayer, our echo of Mary’s “yes,” continue then, so we may enter into the mys-tery of our salvation in Jesus Christ, God among us. By the year 800, when anointing was defined as the proper office of priests, very complicated rituals began to take shape. Perhaps this was to reassure the laity, who had memories of an earlier practice, that the new way was not only better, but impossible for a layperson to conduct. Blessings and sprinkling of holy water, the

singing of as many as seven psalms, penance, anointing of all the senses, viaticum, all capped off by the clothing of the sick person in penitential gar-ments, were part of the rite. This proved unwieldy, and creative spirits got to work. By the 1500s people made distinctions between visiting the sick, anoint-ing, and viaticum. The attempt of the Church to be faithful to the image of a healing Christ has some complicated history, including centuries when the celebration was rare. Most sick people had no access to the rites at all; only monastics or the welloff had much hope

of this care. Today, those unhappy days are long behind us, and the care of the sick is an essential task in every parish’s life. As Christmas approaches almost everyone comes in contact with someone who is a candidate for pastoral care. You live out the best of our tradition when you arrange for a sick person to receive Holy Communion or the sacrament of the sick and the consolation of regular contact with the faith community. —Rev.
