OBLATES of the VIRGIN MARY (OMV)

( August 24 & 25, 2013 ) Father Jeremy Paulin, OMV will make a Mission Appeal to our parish in all the Masses on the weekend of

August 24 & 25, 2013. Please, kindly use the enve-lopes provided in the pews and please be generous to the work in the missions. Thank you very much.

MISSIONARY COOPERATIVE PLAN 2013

The Oblates of the Virgin Mary began giving the Spiritual Ex-ercises in the Philippines in 1994. At first, an Oblate priest sta-tioned in Italy made trips to the Philippines for several months at a time to carry out this ministry. Due to the great demand for retreats coming from the Filipino people, the Oblates soon be-gan to consider starting a permanent mission there. After meet-ing with bishops in several dioceses, the Oblates decided to start their foundation in the Archdiocese of Cebu. It was 1997, and our foundation in the Philippines officially began. Cebu is, by the way, the island where the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan landed to spread Christianity in the Philippines and Asia.

In coming to the Philippines, it was an Oblate goal to train young Filipino men to become Oblate priests. In late 1999, work began on building a house of formation and by late 2001, construction was completed. The opening of school year 2002 saw the admission of the first Filipino seminarians to the priestly formation program. In addition to Cebu, we now have a house of theology for seven seminarians in Manila.

There are also many challenges. The Philippines is a very poor country and majority of Filipino families are poor and live on very modest means. Our seminarians are no exception. The Oblates therefore shoulder the full cost of training a young man for the priesthood. Presently, it costs approximately $2,500 a year to educate, feed, and clothe a seminarian.

The future, however, looks bright for the Oblate presence in the Philippines. As the retreat ministry continues to flourish, the coming school year June 2014 will also welcome twenty-six seminarians at different levels of formation.

Floods cover sections of Manila

Record-breaking rainfall in the Philippines over the last several days has led to flooding in many communities around Manila, a me-tropolis of 18 million people.

The Associated Press is reporting more than 600,000 people affected by flooding, with water in some communities waist and neck-deep. Reuters said that a month’s worth of rain fell in one day, overwhelming low-lying areas.

Joe Curry, CRS’ country representative in the Philippines, noted that reservoirs and rivers are breaching their banks. “The poorest families often live closest to flood-prone areas,” said Curry, “and are likely to suffer disproportionately from heavy rains.”
