PawPrints Magazine's HOMELESS COVER MODEL

Begin your New Year with puppy kisses! My name is Alex (which is short for Alexandra)

and I’m an 8 to 10-month-old

Terrier mix girl. Just take a look at my

face. It’s so scruffy and

adorable! Now let me tell you a little bit about

myself: I was once running out of time at Brunswick County Animal Control. SOAR found me there,

took me in, and now I’m waiting at the shelter for a new family. I am a happy, playful girl who is always ready to make new friends. I’m also very smart and

affectionate. I can sit on command and will take treats ever so gently from your fingers. I love to run, skip and play and I also enjoy cuddling with my human friends. I think everyone is my buddy. There is just something so sweet about the way I

gaze up at you with my soft brown eyes. Won’t you please adopt me? All you have to do is call SOAR at 910-457-6340 and arrange a day for us to meet. You’ll wonder how you ever lived without me! Oh, one last thing, I’d like to thank my SOAR pals for bringing me to the PawPrints photo shoot, and I’d like to thank photographer Dick Parrott for taking my lovely portrait. Happy New Year, everyone!

I want to lay my full-grown, luxuriously-furred 80 pounds at your feet! I’m Annabelle,

a 4-year-old, dry mouth, “teacup” Saint Bernard. I love

to sit next to my foster folks (with my head in a lap) or play with them and my housemates in a fenced open area. I get

along very well with my room-ies - a Hound mix about half my size, another St. Bernard (Nala, featured on page 20), and a cat. My favorite toys

squeak, bounce funny, or drop treats. My foster mom makes sure I get to chew on big natu-

ral beef bones. I’m working to overcome shyness with new people and new dogs. On my leashed walks, I love to greet and be hugged and petted by neighborhood kids. On occa-

sion, as a special treat, I get to run loose on a farm far from the road. I love lumbering through the brush and swimming in the

pond. I obediently come back to a big hug and treat when called. My favorite spot is in the house close to my people. In my former life, I had to live penned outside, but now I’m house-

trained and crate savvy. I’m spayed, have been treated for heartworms, and vaccinated. I’d be so happy in a family with lots of hugs and attention. If you’d like to share your life with

me, contact Cape Fear Saint Bernard Rescue at 910-547-4823 or email [email protected].

I am sponsored by The Gentle Canine Certified

Professional Dog Training, www.gentlecanine.com.

I’m a very hand-some cat named

Track! I’ve got quite a story to tell, too. I was found in a park-ing lot by a vet tech who just happened to see me huddled under a car. I was afraid to move and, because it was 94

degrees outside, all four of my feet and

even my tummy were burned from

the hot pavement. I needed water, food and help. Luckily, I

got all three and now I’m doing great! I’m completely healed and I’m ready to find a wonderful new home. I’m a 3-year-old boy who is neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. I’m good with children and friendly to dogs and other cats. In fact, while staying temporarily in a foster home, I came nose to nose with the family

dog and didn’t even bat an eye. I also spent time with a 10-week-old kitten and was very gentle. I’ll be a won-derful companion for some lucky person or family. If

you’d like to adopt me, please call Cat Adoption Team at 910-792-9014 or come visit me at Petsmart in

Wilmington. You’ll be so glad you did.

I am sponsored by WilmingtonForSale.com in honor of Elsie Flanagan-Stein. Thank you!

My name is Kameron, but you can call me Kami for short! I’m an

adorable male kitten, just 16-weeks-old. I was bottlefed as a baby, so

I’m quite comfortable

being held and am very used

to being around

humans. In fact, I really

enjoy sleeping with my foster mom in the bed at night. Adopt me and I’ll keep you warm all winter! We can snuggle up and count the

days until spring. I also get along well with other cats and am neutered, up to date on shots and litterbox-trained. Please give my SOAR foster mom a call at 910-278-7901. She’ll be happy to tell you all about

me and arrange a time for us to meet.

URGENT, URGENT!! I’m Running Out of

Time! If I look a bit sad to you, it’s be-cause I’ve been living at Pender County Animal Control’s animal shelter for over two months. I’m ready to be part of a family! My name is Ella (CF2735) and I’m a 2 to 3-year-old girl who was found as a stray. They tell me I’m a Catahoula Leopard mix -

sounds exotic, huh? It’s an American dog breed, though, and if you look us up on the

internet, it says we’re intelligent, even-tempered, and love interacting with our families. Could

your heart and home use a sweetheart like me? I’m very good with people and love to go for strolls in the great outdoors. I

walk well on a leash and am so happy to receive attention and some well-deserved treats. Please give me a chance at a long

and happy life with you! Just call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196 and they’ll

be happy to tell you how we can meet.

I am sponsored by Kathy Lanio. Thank you!

Hey there! Make 2011 your best year ever by

adopting me! My name is Maverick and I’m a 3-year-old Great Dane mix. To say I’m a friendly, happy boy would be an under-statement. I know

how to make friends quickly - whether

they’re the human kind or the doggie kind. I used to have a home, but my owner traveled

and had no time to spend with me. He

wants you to know that I lived inside the house and was never destructive - I guess that means I have good

house manners! I got along great with the 4-year-old child who lived there and am OK with cats, too. I love to play ball and I can’t wait to take a ride in the car. At 70

pounds, I’m a big boy, but I know how to sit on com-mand and am already house-trained and leash-trained.

As for my health, I am neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. What do you say - could you be looking at your future best friend? Call the New Hano-ver Humane Society at 910-763-6692 and let’s find out!

I am sponsored by Levi Donovan.

Please consider adoption.

Are there any Jack Russell Terrier fans out there? My

name is Jack and I hope to find myself in a loving home soon.

Family life is all I’ve ever known and I don’t understand why I’m at a shelter. You see, my hu-man parents got divorced and moved away. My mommy was

so upset to let me go - she wants you to know that I’m a

great dog who got caught up in an awful situation. She says

I’m a very calm, quiet boy who loves to meet new people. I

enjoy sitting next to you on the couch, fetching balls and snug-

gling with other dogs. I know several words and phrases, such as: ‘Sit’, ‘Go lay down’, ‘Inside’, ‘Who’s Hungry?’,

‘Leave it alone’, and ‘Who needs to go outside?’ That’s quite a vocabulary! She also says I’ve never, ever tried to start a

fight with another dog and I come when called by either whis-tling or clapping your hands. At 6-years-old, I’m house-trained, good with children, neutered, vaccinated and on

heartworm prevention. Can I move in with you? I promise to love you with all my heart. Please call the New Hanover Humane Society at 910-763-6692 and let’s get together!

In memory of George, New Hanover Humane Society's faithful canine mascot, companion and my best canine

buddy, by Turk "Turkeydog" Bradley.

Sweet and Petite, that's what my foster mom calls me. Although, I'm more of a mom

than her! My name is Shelby. I was used as a puppy mill dog and when my previous owners were done using me for that,

they dropped me off at a shel-ter. My first check up didn't go all that well after a life outside

with little veterinary care. I had three types of worms,

including heartworms. I also had tumors all over (which is a good reason to spay and neu-

ter folks). Luckily, all of my tumors came back benign!

The vet says that is good news and hopefully removing my "estrogen source" will eliminate future tumors. Lastly, I was

underweight, but I love to eat and have had no problem putting on the right amount of weight. I am probably be-

tween 3 to 5-years-old, and weigh around 55 pounds. I am an excellent leash walker and am very treat motivated for

training. I would love to snuggle on your couch and I do get along with other dogs. I am an experienced mommy, so rowdy dogs will have to listen to me. I am so cuddly and affectionate. I do not chew on non-toy items, which is a definite plus to adopting a lady at my young age. I also

rarely bark, so I could probably be content in an apartment, going on nice frequent walks. After what I've been through, I really don't need much. Just someone who will love me

and who I can depend on. Is that you? Visit our website at www.nobleshepherdrescue.com or call 910-431-6294.

I am sponsored by TopsailForSale.com in honor of

Carli and Max McCaffrey.

Hi, I’m Annabelle. I am a gorgeous

Shepherd mix who is 6-years-young

and spayed. I am a big girl (100 pounds)

with lots of love to give! I have many exceptional quali-ties. I am a great watchdog with a deep bark who’s protective of my

family’s territory. I walk well on a leash

and have been obedience-trained. I am invisible fence trained, too! I would love to live inside again and you’ll be pleased to know, I'm 100% house-trained! I enjoy hiking in the woods, barking at and chasing squirrels and lounging on the porch. You could say I like country-style living. My requirements are simple! I need a fenced yard or invisible fence, a strong pack leader, and a home where there are NO other dogs or cats. Because of my extra-large size, I would do best with older children, too. I deserve another chance to find a great home, could it be with you? If you are interested in adopting me, please call Amy today at 910-253-0501 to arrange a visit. Hope to see you soon!

I am sponsored by Francesca Slaughter in loving

memory of Casper and Lucy.

►I am a super friendly and goofy guy! That's why they named me Squiggy. I get along great with other pets,

people, kids - you name it. I am a well rounded guy. I spent a couple of months at Animal Con-

trol, but hey, no biggie. I like my foster home and love to stretch out and roll around on the soft carpet. I would love to snuggle in bed with you and some cozy blankets. I am neutered, up to date on my shots and a lot of fun to be around. I am

litter-trained, too.

►My name is Spike and they are not sure of my breed. How-ever, I am a hand-

some boy with grey, tan and black mark-

ings. I would make a good companion for

some human out there! I don't pull on the leash or act crazy at all. I have a mod-erate energy level. I am neutered, up to date on my shots,

and heartworm nega-tive. I am crate-

trained, too. I can't believe I ran out of time at a local Ani-mal Control, but I did. Please don't let me languish in

homelessness anymore.

◄My name is Bernie and I am super sweet and happy.

I was found walking down the street incredibly emaciated when someone took me in and helped fatten me up. I

had an old injury where I had been hit by a car. The vet

says it is not hurting me at all. It does make me limp, but I can get around fine. I am neutered, vaccinated and heartworm negative. I am

house-trained, and get along with cats, dogs and kids, too. Will you please adopt a dog with special needs?

Special thanks to the Fur Ball Committee for allowing Adopt-an-ANGEL to be a part of

the Wilmington Fur Ball. And thank you to everyone who came to support us!

Check out our BRAND new website at www.adoptanangel.net!

◄I’m Mowgli - just like the little boy in Jungle Book. I got this name

because I was an owner turn in...and no one

wanted me once I was in the shelter. Kinda

like the boy! (His mom gave him to the wolf

pack, and then the wolf pack sent him away to the man village when they didn't want him

anymore). Not to men-tion the boy is fun and young like me. I am around 9-months-old and a complete love

bug! I love to sit right next to you while you

pet me. I can get excited sometimes, just like any puppy, but I already know “sit” and “no”. I love dogs and playing

with them and the kitties are ok, too. (Mom says I get a little rambunctious around them, but I wont hurt them). I am

a great boy in need of a wonderful home. I can get scared when people yell - someone used to hit me so I cower to the

ground, but I mean well I promise! Now that I am with Adopt-An-ANGEL, I know no one will hit me ever again - but this is still going to take some getting used to. I might want a quiet home for a bit. Good news is I am young and will

learn very quickly the right way to be treated. I am good in the bath and I ride well in the car. I am also getting better on the leash. Won’t you please adopt me and give me the

forever home I deserve? Call Adopt-An-ANGEL today!

◄My name is Speckle and I’m everything you could ever want in a kitty! I’m cute, I’m loving, I make biscuits, I’m a

purr machine, I like to be held and I’m good with kids, dogs and other cats. I even let a litter of kittens smack me on

the forehead and on my back as I walked by their cage.

And when I make biscuits, I can make them anywhere…

on the floor, in the air, on you. Yummy! I love to be petted and will even rub

around your ankles. I’m just 8-months-old and was surrendered by my family because they were moving. Would you give me a second chance?

Page 10: PawPrints Magazine January 2011

URGENT, URGENT! This Is My Last Time in

the Magazine! This is my fourth appearance in the magazine and it looks to be

my last if I’m not adopted. There are just too many dogs coming into the shelter and not enough

room for us all. Won’t you please consider adopting me? A Good Samaritan has agreed to pay for my neutering, vaccina-

tions and heartworm test, so my new family won’t even have to consider that expense. I’m a beautiful boy with lots of love to give. My name is Midnight (CM2579) and I’ve been at the shelter since June of 2010. I watch the visitors as they come and go but, for some reason, no one seems to notice me. It’s quite a mystery as I have soft brown eyes, glossy ebony fur and a friendly, loveable personal-

ity. I’m a young Black Lab mix, probably 2 to 3 years of age, and I was found as a stray in Pender County. I’m an affection-ate boy who is happy to make friends with everyone and I have a playful attitude toward life. I would love to become part of a

loving family, play in the fenced-in yard, and cuddle on the couch or rug with you. Could you make my dream come true? Please call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196. You’ll find me here, waiting to

hear your voice outside my kennel door.

I am sponsored by the Keffer family: Dixie, Luke, Kira, Nikki and Charly. Thank you!

URGENT, URGENT!!

I’m Running Out of Time!!

It’s hard being at Ani-mal Control, but it’s especially hard for dogs like me. We

once had families and know what it feels like to be loved - now all I know is the feeling of

being abandoned. Could you restore my life to the happy one it once was? My name is Misty (CF3021) and I’m a black Lab mix with a wavy coat of hair. I’m such a pretty girl and I am always smil-ing despite my sad circumstances. I was so excited to come out of my kennel for my photo, and I sat down on

command as soon as they asked me. I’m already spayed, so my new family won’t have to worry about that expense. I’m good on a leash, I listen well and I

enjoy dog cookies. I’ve been living here since October and I need to find a home soon! They have so many

dogs and not enough room for us all. Would you please come visit? You’ll get a warm reception, I prom-

ise! Call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196 for directions or

more information.

I am sponsored by Kathy Lanio. Thank you!

◄I’m a baby girl kitten named Broadway

(A036480). If I was a star on Broadway, and you were sitting in the audience, I’d sing these lyrics from A

Chorus Line to you: “One smile and suddenly nobody

else will do; You know you'll never be lonely with you...know...who!” You

see, that song is about me! You’ll never be lonely again if you adopt me. I’m a very

affectionate girl, just 4-months-old. I love to be

picked up and held in your arms. Kids would love me. YOU would love me!

◄Looking for a young, happy boy to make your life complete? Your

search is over! My name is Dasher

(A035609) and I’m a 1-year-old Lab mix who is friendly to all the folks I meet. I

walk well on a leash and have a quiet,

playful personality. The ladies here say they’ve never even heard me bark! I love to nibble on treats from your

fingers and will lean against you for shoulder and neck rubs. Let’s go!

◄I’m a puppy girl who will have you smiling and giggling as soon as you take me into the playroom! I’m full of love and life and am so happy to meet new people. My name is Bailey (A035118) and I was found as a stray by a nice family. I was wearing a pink collar but no one has ever claimed me. I’m an 8-month-old Shepherd mix who is already vaccinated. I love treats and I love to be rubbed. Let’s go home, ok?

◄Black Labs are superb family dogs! I should know because I’m one of them. Hi there, my name is Summer (A035124) and I’m a 2-year-old girl who was found as a stray. I’m so friendly and happy. I welcome every-one who comes up to me, whether I know them or not. I can sit on com-mand and I sure do love laying down at your feet so that you can give me belly rubs. Adopt me!

►Hello, friends. My name is Frasier

(A035586) and I’m an 8-month-old Walker

Hound mix. If my soft brown eyes could

talk, they’d say, “I’m lonely here. Please take me home!” I have a very gentle

spirit that melts hearts. Take me into

the playroom and watch my tail - it

never stops wagging. Sometimes it wags so

hard that my entire body from the waist down is wiggling! I was found as a stray and am a bit bewildered by shelter life, but it’s obvious that I want attention and love so des-perately. I enjoy eating treats and will do the puppy play-

bow to show you how happy and excited I am by your attention. Come on out to the shelter and get to know me!

►Start the New Year with a new best friend!

My name is Clarice (A035067) and I would be very happy to make

2011 your best year ever! You see, I’m a very affectionate and

friendly girl. You’ll feel like the most loved

person in the world with me around. And just look how pretty I am - wouldn’t it be nice to wake up to this face

every morning? I’m a 1-year-old Tabby who was found on Oak Island as as stray. Please hurry on over!

I’m a Russian Blue who lost my

right eye to an injury

when I was a baby, but

don’t worry, it doesn’t

bother me at all. I

play, skip, hop and melt hearts just like any other kitten! My name is Misty and I’m a 7 pound girl, just 5 to 6-months-old. I was in a foster home for a while, and they said I love to lay in laps and watch TV with my human friends. I also love to play! I get along great with dogs and other cats and am already spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Please

don’t miss the opportunity to share your life with a wonderful girl like me. For driving directions, or more

information, call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022. I’ll be waiting to entertain you in the playroom!

I am sponsored by the UNCW Pre-Veterinary Medical

Association. Thank you!

I’ve only been at the shelter for one hour, so

I’m a little perplexed. You see, my name is

Molly and I once lived in a home with a daddy

who loved me. He re-cently had a stroke so

now I’m looking for a new family. I’m a

3-year-old Cocker Span-iel who is very loving

and affectionate. I am happy to meet new peo-ple and am not a bit shy.

I get along well with other dogs, too. In fact, my best buddy, Peanut,

is at the shelter with me. He’s a Dachshund and can be seen on page 35. I am already spayed and house-trained and would be a great family dog for a household of kids, or

a household with just adults. I’d be great for anyone! If you’d like to meet me in person, please call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022 and let’s become friends!

I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in

Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thanks!

My name is Irwin, and I am named after Steve Irwin, another Aussie

gentleman. My perfect home would be with

someone who is famil-iar with Blue Heelers. I am completely true to my breed. I herd, I nip and I feel everything with my mouth. I am energetic and super

smart! I already know sit, down and give me paw. I am very train-able and food moti-

vated. Use it to your advantage. I am excellent with other dogs and I completely submit to them. I am learning not to jump or pull on the lead and would benefit from someone who is authoritative. I walk all over wimpy people - I am just too smart for them. I love to chew but just give me a chew toy and it can entertain me some. A fenced yard and another dog would be beneficial for me. I must be

exercised, stimulated, and would love a job to do. If you don't, I will be bored and will probably get into some trou-ble. I am gorgeous - just check out these markings! I am

neutered, vaccinated, heartworm negative and house-trained. If you would like to know more about me or

would like to inquire about the adoption process, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557.

I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance

Agency in loving memory of Dingo.

Hi there, my name is Uno! I was found

running down a busy street in Bur-gaw. A kind couple came to my rescue and now I’m waiting

for a permanent, loving home. I’m a female American

Staffordshire Terrier mix, just 3-years-

old. My personality could best be de-scribed as friendly and fun-loving. I

am spayed, vacci-nated, house-

trained and leash-trained. I love to be

petted and enjoy playing tug-of-war with my rope toys. Pender County Humane Society wants me to go to the

best home possible, so you must be experienced with han-dling my breed. A fenced-in yard is also a necessity. I’m not a big fan of cats, but I play just fine with other dogs as long as I’m introduced slowly. Since I’m a playful, active girl, I would do best in a home with adults-only or older

children, not tiny ones. If you think we could be a match, please call the shelter at 910-259-7022. I’ll get my rope

toy ready for your visit!

I am sponsored by Milo, a Pender County Humane Society shelter dog who found his forever home.

Despondent over the theft of Billie, her rescued Mal-tese mix puppy, Christine Pfohl was making yet an-other trip to New Hanover County Animal Control in the hope that Billie might have been found. When an attendant asked if she had tried calling PawPrints Magazine, Christine picked up the latest issue. There, on page 33, was Jellybean. The scruffy face, so much like Billie’s, tugged at her heart. She soon found herself on a new search, one which led to Pender County Animal Control. Although not yet ready to give up the search for Billie, she was more than prepared to rescue another de-serving soul. Here, Christine describes her first meeting with Jellybean (destined to become ‘Jillie’ in honor of Bil-lie) and what life has been like for them (and Billie!) since: “I recognized Jillie from her photo right away. She was

in a kennel out-side near the road, just bark-ing her head off. In fact, she had grown quite hoarse. I spent a long time walking her and sitting alone with her there. She had a calm demeanor, and was actually not

a barker at all once she was away from the other dogs. I knew I would keep her during the drive home. She lay quietly in the back seat, and every now and then would nudge me. At the house, she snooped all over and fol-lowed me around. She let me groom her and enjoyed cud-dling. From the beginning, she was good around people. That very first night, she crawled under the bed and slept there. She really likes enclosed spaces, such as under chairs and tables, so she was very easy to crate-train.

Now, however, she sleeps on the bed! In July, we stayed a week in a pet-welcoming cabin above Asheville. My veterinarian daughter brought along her big Shepherd from Santa Monica, and the two dogs became Mutt and Jeff buddies. The cabin was secluded, with lots of wildlife around. Jillie couldn’t wait to go for walks, because of all the butterflies and deer smells. One night I was taking the ‘girls’ out one last time before bed - it was quite dark out there! - and two fawns went galloping past within inches of the front porch. Suddenly, these two lost all bravado, tucked their tails, and raced back into the cabin. Four months after I got Jillie, my little stolen Billie was returned to me by a Good Samaritan. It was truly a dream come true. I then had to rename Billie because the two names were so similar that it confused Jillie. So now I have a Jillie and a Hunter. Jillie took charge of her ‘little sister’, Hunter, and taught her all about playing, patrolling the yard, hunting for toads, riding in the car. The two are inseparable, and they follow right at my heels wherever I go. Almost every morning, they take each and every one of their toys, one by one, out of the basket and into the yard. I never tire of watching their antics, or of snuggling and petting them. These two have become best buddies, and I love them so much. People are always asking me where I got such ador-able little dogs. I tell them, ‘From Animal Control! They’re rescues.’”

Jellybean, re-named Jillie, enjoys snuggling with mom Christine Pfohl.

Christine and Jillie smile for the camera while vacationing in the North Carolina mountains.

CAT: Cat Adoption Team

◄I’m a Manx! Know what that means? It means that I have no tail, just a little nubbin. It makes me look like a bunny, so that’s how I got my name, Rabbit. I also have long, silky, black fur so I’m quite a stunner! I’m a neutered boy who gets along great with kids and other cats. I am quiet, gentle and love to be cuddled and rubbed. I’m also vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Take this bunny home with you!

Volunteers Needed Desperately!

To help, please email or call:

[email protected] or 910-792-9014 and leave a message.

◄Look how adorable I am! Just think, you could be playing with me in your home very soon. All you have to do is come meet me and fall in love! I’m a very sweet girl named Jerri-Lynn, and I have

been waiting for a loving home for quite a while. I’m playful, friendly and affectionate - it’s a true mystery why I haven’t been snatched up! At

9-months-old, I get along well with children,

dogs and other cats. I’m also spayed, up to

date on shots and litterbox-trained. You’ll love me!

◄Hi! I’m Marianne and I’m an 8-month-old female Tabby. I was rescued from Animal Control with my five babies. They’ve all found homes and I’m ready to be part of a loving family, too. I am sweet and gentle, and just a little bit shy when you first meet me. Don’t worry, I warm up quickly and am always happy to get a nice back rub. I am friendly to other cats, spayed, up to date on vaccinations and litterbox-trained. Adopt me!

►I’m a precious kitten named Maria, and I’m just 12-weeks-old. My mama,

Julia, is pictured below me. We were rescued

from a shelter where we were running out of time. I

was the runt of the litter but I’ve blossomed into a pretty girl with a smokey

Tuxedo coat. I love to play, but can be a bit shy when I first meet you. I’ll

need a loving home with a patient family. Oh, I’m

great with other cats!

►Hello there, my name is Birdie! I’m a young girl, just 14-weeks-old, and I

was found as a stray by a very nice family. They kept me safe until Cat

Adoption Team could take me in. I got along great with the little girl in the

family and really enjoyed laying in her arms, just

like a baby doll. I have a calm demeanor and will cuddle with you forever

and a day, if you’ll let me. I have beautiful orange and white fur and am

already spayed, vaccinated and litterbox trained. Please hurry to Petsmart and meet me. I’m ready to get my New

Year off to a wonderful start with someone like you!

◄Hi there! My name is Julia and I’m a beautiful dilute Calico girl who was rescued with my baby Maria (pictured above) from a shelter where we had run out of time. I love to be held and petted and I get along well with other kitties and human children. I also have a playful streak and am a low maintenance girl. Like my daughter, I’m spayed, vaccinated and great in the litterbox. Let me be yours!

Cat Tails

▲Well, my name, Lady Gaga implies that I must be out-landish. Just take a look! I am the most unusual Calico you

have ever seen. My face is orange surrounded by black and white. I am about 18-months old and finally rid of all

those babies. You see, not only did I take care of my own, but I took care of seven others who lost their mom.

Whew, what a job.

►Calico kitties are always the first ones to be adopted so why am I still here?

As you can see, I am a

beautiful pastel Calico. My name is Shana and I am 1½-years-old. I am the only girl in a room of rowdy boys and let me tell

you, they don’t get over on me. I am very sweet, as every girl should be, and l love attention, just like every girl. If

you take me home I will snuggle with you forever! ▲Look into my beautiful blue eyes and let me mesmerize

you. My name is BeBe and I am an 18-month-old Siamese mix. I’ve had a tough life already being dumped at a car

dealership. Someone found me and took me home. I love playing with other kitties and get along great with puppies as well. Because of being abandoned, I am still getting

used to being picked up and held. However, I love to come lay beside you and will purrrrrrrr forever. Won’t you please think about me when you want someone new in your life?

▲Oh Poppycock! That’s what all the other kitties say to me! With a name like Poppy you better be cute, and

well I must say - I am. I’m a lovely white kitty with gray spots on my head. Everyone wants a white cat so why am I still here looking for a home? I am still a youngster

at just a year and a half, and very friendly as well.

▲We are actually much prettier than the flowers we’re named after, Buttercup and Tulip. We were adopted ear-

lier in the spring when flowers were in bloom. Then our owner moved away and didn’t want us. Who could give up their cats? I just don’t understand. We would love to stay

together but it isn’t mandatory. So if you want a little springtime in your house this winter, come adopt two beau-

tiful 1-year old cats with flower names. P.S. You can change our names, we’re not crazy about them either!

►For all you race car fans, I am the cat for

you. My name is Full Throttle and as

you might guess, I am “wide open”. I am a 1-year-old boy who is definitely in the teen-

ager stage. One of my favorite past-times is to perch on your shoulder and go for a ride. So if you want me to watch Dale Earnhardt Jr. with you - I would be happy to.

Cars going around in circles are entertaining to watch!

If you have ever wanted to

meet a true lady, here’s

your chance!

I’m Jetta, a petite 12 pound,

4-year-old mini-

Schnauzer who has

experienced horrendous pain and still managed to remain a lady through it all. Schnauzer Rescue of the Carolinas fig-ures I had suffered from bladder stones for some time with no relief. I went through my surgery to remove the sturvite stones. Even while I was passing bladder stones, I tried desperately to not have any accidents in the house. I get

along very well with other dogs and am ambivalent towards cats. I deserve a wonderful home that will shower me with

love and attention! My diet should consist of Hills KD canned/dry food to keep me from getting those painful

stones again. If you are interested in me and would like to find out more, visit www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org.

There you can fill out an application online and view other adoptable rescues. If you need an application mailed or

faxed to you, please call 910-264-8300 to have an application sent.

I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance

Agency in honor of Molly.

“Wow!” is usually the word I hear

when people first meet me. My

name is Bernice (CF3112) and I’m a large, gorgeous

girl, possibly mixed with Saint Bernard,

Collie or Shep-herd. I have a

gentle and loving spirit and would be a perfect compan-

ion for a family with children, or

even a household with just adults.

Anyone would be so lucky to adopt

me! At a young 3 to 4-years-old, I was found walking by the side of the road in Burgaw. No one has claimed me, so I can be all yours! I walk well on a leash, am friendly to all the people I meet and sure do enjoy getting mas-

sages on my thick, luxurious coat. I can jump small fences, so a privacy fence will be perfect for me. If you’d like to live life with a show-stopping sweetheart by your side, please call Pender County Animal Control at 910-

259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196. Prepare to fall in love when we meet!

I am sponsored in celebration of Abbey’s long and

happy life with Penny and Rick.

◄My name is Calypso (A248789). I’m a Calico Tabby and a purr ma-chine. My owner could no longer keep me so I was surrendered to the shelter. I’m a very loving girl who loves neck and chin scratches and being held. I’m good with cats, even pesky kittens. I was laying on the floor in front of a kitten cage and two kittens were doing their best to annoy me...but I just laid there. Adopt me!

◄There is a fabulously charming pooch just waiting at Animal Control for you to adopt him...and it’s me!! My

name is Jackman (A248027) and I’m a Jack Russell Terrier and Corgi mix. I know how to sit, lay down and shake hands on command. I am both food and praise motivated. I’m

also as smart as a whip and eager to please so teaching

me new things will be a breeze. I was picked up by Animal Control as a stray

and had been running loose for several days. I was hop-ing to find my owners but I was unsuccessful. I’m a really

great dog who’s just looking for a really great person to cherish. I seriously think that could be you!

►Talk about lucky! I was found as a stray running loose near Independence Boulevard

and Oleander Drive. It’s a miracle that I didn’t get hit by

a car. My name is Sugar Ray (A248558) and I’m a Boxer

mix who is sweeter than sugar! I know how to sit and

lay down on command, I’m good on a leash, I’m social

and fun and I’m ready to bring joy to your life. I’m only about

1-year-old so we’ll have plenty of time to make each

other feel special.

►Even though you can’t tell by my picture, I’m so sad-

dened by the fact my family surrendered me. They said it was because of the new

twins. I’m excellent with kids and was excited at the pros-pect of our family growing by

two but unfortunately, that meant no one had time to spend with me. So alone I

sat in the backyard with nothing to do and no one to

love. I did the only thing that came natural...I dug some holes. I’m accepting the

change in my life and am ready for a new start. My name is Hogan (A248404) and I’m a 1-year-old petite Lab mix who is house-trained and good with kids and dogs. Would you

let me love your family?

►Who doesn't need a little buddy to make them feel

loved? My name is Little Buddy (A248791) and

I’m here to make you feel loved - and to make you

laugh. I was brought to the shelter and surrendered by my owner because they could no longer keep me. I’m a 1-year-old boy who is handsome and

charming. I’m a really nice guy who loves to be held.

Even though I’m pretty laid-back, I also love to play and explore. Won’t you please come out to the shelter and

save me? I promise to be a great companion.

►My name is Oreo (A248563) and I was

given as a gift about 1-month ago. Now, here I sit alone in a cage at the shelter. That tells you

how good of an idea giv-ing pets as presents is,

doesn’t it? I’m 10-months-old, very loving

and already spayed. I’m an affectionate girl who enjoys being touched

and has become an ex-pert snuggler. My favor-

ite toys are ones with feathers and they make me act silly. Please consider

making me part of your family.

I want to lay my full-grown, luxuriously-furred 80

pounds at your feet! I’m Nala, a 3-year-old, dry

mouth, “teacup” Saint Ber-nard. I love to sit next to my foster folks (with my head in a lap) or play with them and my housemates in a fenced open area. I get along very

well with my roomies - a Hound mix about half my size, another St. Bernard

(Annabelle, featured on page 3), and a cat. My favorite toys squeak, bounce funny, or drop treats. My foster mom makes sure I get to chew on big natural beef bones. I’m comfortable meeting new people and new dogs, espe-

cially if we can take a little walk together. On my leashed walks, I love to greet and be hugged and petted by

neighborhood kids. On occasion, as a special treat, I get to run loose on a farm far from the road. I love lumbering through the brush and swimming in the pond. I obediently come back to a big hug and treat when called. My favorite spot is in the house close to my people. In my former life,

I had to live penned outside, but now I’m house-trained and crate savvy. I’m spayed, have been treated for heart-worms, and vaccinated. I’d be so happy in a family with lots of hugs and attention. If you’d like to share your life

with me, contact Cape Fear Saint Bernard Rescue at 910-547-4823 or email [email protected].

URGENT, URGENT!! This Will Be My Last Time in the Magazine!

What’s going on? I just know there have got to be folks out there who love

cuddly, kissable, orange

Tabbies! I’ve been featured

in the magazine month after

month, and my friends at Animal Control are trying desperately to help find

me a family. They know what a gem I am. They even have me in a cat cage in the lobby so that folks can see me when they first walk in! Doesn’t someone out there want to kiss my chubby cheeks and take me home? My name is Citrus (FM2225) and I’m a young boy who has been living at the shelter since June 15. It’s just bizarre

that I’ve been overlooked! I was born to be by someone’s side, or on their lap, or in their arms. I’m not picky! I do have good news: a reader paid for my neutering. It’s all

done and my new family won’t even have to think about it. If you’d like to be the lucky one who takes me home,

please call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196. Officer Clewis can tell you all about me and give you driving directions.

I am sponsored by the Keffer family: Dixie, Luke, Kira,

◄I’d be so grateful for you to take me home! My name is Serena and I’m a 2-year-old spayed female who was dropped off at a local veterinarian’s office. I’m a very friendly and affectionate girl and have soft and silky, medium-length fur. I’ve already been vaccinated and am a pro when it comes to using the litterbox. ◄Hi there, I’m Chloey! I’m a 7-month-old, 36

pound Hound mix who is ready to love you for the rest of your life. You’ll find that I’m all ready to move in with no trouble

at all: I’m already house-trained, I like other dogs,

I’m OK with cats, I’m good with children (I once shared a home

with an 8-year-old) and I enjoy car rides. It won’t

be long before you’ll wonder how you ever got through your days without me! I’m also

spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. Let’s start the New Year on the right foot: Adopt me!

◄My name is Boots! I’m a 6-month-old kitten with a fun and friendly approach to life. I love to play with toys and will entertain you for hours with my kitten-adorable ways. Just give me a ball or feather and watch me go! I get along so well with the other kitties in the playroom. We stand side by side and have no squabbles at all. I’m already neutered, up to date on shots and litterbox-trained. Let’s go!

►You can’t tell from this photo, but I am surrounded by other kitties! We are all

standing shoulder to shoulder, watching a

peacock feather held just above the camera. I’m

letting you in on the secret so you’ll know how friendly I

am to other felines! My name is Midnight and I’m a

6-month-old boy who is neutered, vaccinated and

litterbox-trained. I love to be held, kissed and cuddled.

Visit me at the shelter today!

◄Looking for a kitten who will make you smile and laugh all day long? Prepare to rejoice, because you’ve found him! My name is Tiger and I’m a 6 pound, 6-month-old boy who loves to play, eat, nap and snuggle...not necessarily in that order. I get along great with the other kitties at the shelter and I also enjoy being held by humans. Oh yes, I’m neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Enjoy 2011 with me by your side!

►Take a look at my big smile! This should

show you what a friendly, happy-go-lucky

boy I am. My name is Duke and I’m an

adorable combination of a Chocolate Lab

and a Boxer. At just 11-months-old, I weigh only

41 pounds and am as sweet as can be. I’m already house-trained, so you won’t have to

worry about that. And I’m great with children, so bring them on! I’m used to living indoors with the family and playing outside in a fenced-in yard. Adopt me and let’s get started on our fabulous new life!

I'm Beatrice and I'm still looking for my for-ever home. The last

six months have been eventful for me. First, I was dropped off at Ani-mal Control (I'm still not sure why). Then after I

was rescued, I was diagnosed with heart-worms. I went through the treatment with no problems and have been a foster ever

since. You might think that I'm sad, but I'm not.

I'm such a happy girl, always eager to meet

someone new. I'm good with kids and I get

along with other dogs, although I like to be in charge. They think I'm about 5-years-old, a Retriever and Shep-herd mix. I'm up to date on my shots and neutered and I'm ready for my new home! Please call Pet Friends of Duplin County at 910-271-3101 and we'll get together.

I am sponsored by Pet Friends of Duplin County.

Here I am, relaxing on the floor in my foster

home, but I hope to soon be relaxing in

my perma-nent home with my for-ever family! My name is Zoe and I’m

a 7-year-old female Beagle. I was once a beloved family member, but my owner could no longer keep me after going

through financial struggles. The good news is that I’m a perfect family companion! I am house-trained, leash-

trained, and love to be cuddled and kissed. I have a good-natured personality, am friendly to children and other dogs and I really enjoy going for walks. I am so happy to receive attention from my humans and I love to be petted. I’m also spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I’m the best friend you’ve been searching for! Please call Paw’s Place at 910-845-7297 to find out how you can adopt me.

◄Hello! My name is Bella Maria and

I’m a 2-year-old Walker Hound girl. I hope my photo,

which was taken in my foster home,

shows you what an excellent friend I would be. I have

terrific house manners and want nothing more than

to cuddle with you and please you. I’m a petite girl, just 31 pounds, and I get along very well with the six other dogs living with me. I’m also spayed, up to date on vaccinations and on

heartworm prevention. Call Paw’s Place today and let’s meet!

◄Hello, animal lovers! I’m a people lover so

we’d make quite a match. I’m Freddie, a

3-year-old house-trained boy with the friendliest, most loving disposition. I enjoy being with hu-

mans and will sit on com-mand for some yummy treats. I also enjoy get-ting belly rubs and hugs. I’m not a big boy at 40 to 45 pounds. I guess you could say I’m just right, not too large or small.

I’m also a Redtick Hound mix. If you want to live a

happy life with a happy boy, plan on adopting me!

►Hi, my name is Peaches. You can’t tell

by my smiling face, but my earlier life was a sad one.

I was kept outside and gave birth to litters of pup-

pies. But all that has changed! I’m spayed and looking forward to living

inside with my new family. I am already house-trained and I get along great with other dogs. I’m a friendly

and loving 8-year-old Golden Retriever mix. All I want is TLC and a nice place to live with a family who adores me. I’m also vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I’m not asking for much,

just kindness and affection. I’ll give it right back in return!

►My name is Sugar Pie and I’m a 3-year-old Redbone/

Bloodhound mix girl. I have floppy ears as soft as butter and I also have the most kissable mouth. In fact, I’m kissin’ people all the time because I’m extremely friendly and affectionate. I enjoy

playing and being with people. I love other

dogs, too. I really want to be part of a family. Would you let me be your new baby girl?

I’ve been at Paw’s Place for such a long time!

►I might be nothin' but a hound dog, but I sure am proud! My name is Beau and I was part of a litter of twelve puppies that was adopted out four years ago. Sadly, my owner became very ill

and could no longer keep me. The good news is

that I have perfect house manners and am very well behaved! I walk nicely on a leash, am

house-trained, can sit for a cookie, and I get along well with other dogs and human children. I am

even used to sleeping in bed with my family, if it’s allowed. Please give me a home where I can be loved and adored!

►My name is Luna and I’m a 3-year-old Terrier mix who is

extremely laid-back and easy-going. You’ll find that I’m a darling, awesome girl who

has NO issues. I’m already house-trained, leash-trained, spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I

adore other dogs and I love people, especially kids. I

behave beautifully at adoption fairs and am instant friends

with everyone who ap-proaches. I love giving and receiving hugs and am always happy to be by your side. I was featured on the PawPrints

cover in October 2010. Adopt your very own cover girl!

My name is Ellie and I am a fun,

playful, ener-getic girl who would do best

in a home with a fenced in yard. I am spayed, up to date on my vaccinations and heart-

worm nega-tive. I do great with

other dogs. I was adopted as a puppy and returned by my family because they felt that they couldn't meet my needs. What I need right now is a new family. It's very sad for me to be stuck in a cage at a boarding facility. Please don't let me be homeless for six months, like some of these other guys I am looking at! HOW SAD! I would benefit from a fenced in yard or even if you had a lonely, lazy dog who needs some exercise. If you would like to know more

about me or would like to inquire about the adoption proc-ess, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557.

I am sponsored by the Miss Avis Davis Fund, thanks!

Howdy folks! My name is Howie

and I’m a super

special doggy with

special needs.

As a very young

puppy, I suffered a

serious back in-jury and

because of it, I’m unable to walk. I can stand up and I do hope to walk again one day. I’ve been going to Eastern Carolina Veterinary Referral for physical therapy every

day. My friends at Capeside Animal Hospital also got me a nice set of wheels so I can get around quite a bit. I love

playing fetch and I like swimming. In fact, I can move my back legs when I’m in the pool! I am 1-year-old, neutered, heartworm negative, current on all of my vaccinations and good with kids and other dogs. I love people and would

love for you to give me a forever home so that I can be part of your family. Come see me and you will be amazed at

how playful and energetic I can be. Just wait until you see how fast I can move with my set of wheels! If you could

love a smart, happy and loving Border Collie mix boy with a heart of gold, I hope you’ll consider me. I’m a really good

dog. Please call Furever Friends Animal Rescue at 910-383-2100 (Monday through Friday between 8am-6pm).

I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance

Agency in honor of Luna.

How is it that an adorable pup like me sits alone in a shelter? My name is Bear and I’m a 3½-

month-old Lab/Shepherd mix

boy with a cuddly and loveable

personality. You might remember that my brother, Bandit, was fea-tured on the De-cember cover of

PawPrints. I also came to the photo shoot and

had my photo taken. I was a perfect angel, even sitting un-der hot lights and meeting new people. They had me sit in various poses (some next to a kitten!) and I never made a peep. I was just happy to get all the attention! I get along great with other animals and am already neutered and vac-cinated. If you come visit me at the shelter, I promise you’ll fall in love with my adorable ways. You can watch me play, cuddle me, and take me for a walk. I’ll show you why I’m

the one you’ve been waiting for! Please call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022 and let’s get started.

I am sponsored by George, Brenda and John Harriss in loving memory of Miss Scarlett, Rosie Belle, Candy

and Lady, special friends, all.

Hello! I’m Duke (A035677), a well-trained,

gorgeous, male Border Collie

who would be a fantastic com-panion for any lucky person or family! I’m al-ready house-

trained and neu-tered, so you

can mark those two require-ments off the

list. I listen well and will sit and shake on com-

mand. I just love to receive treats and praise when I do things like that! I’m friendly to all I meet and have a luxurious black and white coat. My legs are white and speckled with black fur, so I must say I’m quite a handsome boy. I once was part of a fam-ily, so I’m a bit sad at being here. Like most Border Col-lies, I enjoy having a family to take care of - it makes me

feel like I’ve got a job to do! If you have room in your heart for me, please call Brunswick County Animal Con-trol at 910-754-8204 and tell them you’re on your way!

I am sponsored by Adam’s Folly Pet Boarding,

Can you hear me purring? My name is Rosie and I’m an ex-

tremely affectionate cat who is looking for a good home. I was brought to Pender County Humane Society by a nice lady who had been feeding me when I was a stray

hanging out by a storage unit. I get along great with the other kitties at the shelter and I love getting attention from humans! I'm spayed,

current on vaccinations, litterbox-trained and 1-year-old. I’d be so grateful to have a furever home! Come to the shelter and get to know me. It’s a cage-less environment, so you can play with me and watch me interact with the other kitties and all the toys that

are laying around. If you’d like to get things started, please call Pender County Humane Society at

910-259-7022 and tell them you’re on your way!

I am sponsored by Christine Watkins of A Pet Nanny. Thank you!

My name is Abbey Mae. I found

myself in rescue

because my dad passed

away and my mom is unable to care for a dog by herself.

I am 7-years-old and

sweet as can be. I love to please and just hang out with my family, I get along great with other dogs, but I do enjoy

chasing cats. I am fully vetted and ready to go to my next family, whether it be a foster family or adoptive family. I have lots of love to give and I love to be with my people! I’m still playful and have a zest for life! Please consider

fostering or adopting me. For more information, please visit www.blueridgeboxerrescue.com or contact Sonya at

NOW OPEN - 9am to 4pm on Saturdays!

My name is Ricky Bobby and I am a

1-year-old, male Great Dane mix. I am full of

energy and will keep you on your toes. I am still learning how to interact with humans so some-times I take a little while to warm up to new peo-

ple. I am doing very well with the other dogs in my foster family. I am also good with cats. I some-

times forget what the proper etiquette of the

household is so I have to be reminded of the rules

often. I love to eat and I will try to eat out of everyone's bowl, too! My foster family says I am still learning that I'm a big boy when interacting with people and dogs and my enthusiasm sometimes gets the best of me. I get excited playing and forget that not jumping on people is one of the house rules. I hope to make someone a great and loyal dog, but I just need an owner who will continue to create boundaries for me. I really want to please my foster par-ents and am trying very hard to learn what rules are and why they should be followed. My family tells me what a

sweet boy I am and how quickly I learn from them, includ-ing the Great Dane in my family. For more info about me

or to give me a forever home, please contact the NC Chap-ter Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League by calling Terri

at 252-566-8934 or visiting www.magdrl.org.

Hello there, my name is Nesbitt

but my foster Momma calls me Nezzie. I finally got rid of those

nasty heart-worms, so I am

ready to be adopted. I am a very handsome

boy who’s 3-years-old. In my opinion my pictures don't do me justice. I am tri-colored and have wonderful freckles, and nice long ears. I am a very fun, playful boy. I love to be the center

of attention, and be the first one to be petted. I am a great wrestler - just ask my foster dad, he gets on the floor and plays with me and my foster brother. I am very sweet and love to cuddle while giving you some sloppy kisses. I am also a great shadow. I follow my foster Momma around

everywhere, I even lay outside the bathroom door and wait on her. One thing I need to work on - my food is mine and whatever falls on the floor is mine. I’m trying to learn that I will always have food and I don't need to fight for it. I have made lots of progress, but it is recommended that I go to a home that doesn't have young kids - although I love kids, it's just for the best. I do get along with my foster siblings, but when it's chow time I am not willing to share, so I eat in my own space. If you are willing to love me uncondition-

ally, even with my minor faults, I promise to be a loyal Hound to you. So whataya say? I'll have my bags packed in a jiffy! To make me a member of your family, please call

◄Hello there! My name is Lexie (CF3208) and I’m

a petite, lemon and white Basset Hound mix girl. I’m just 6-

months-old and have a lot of years ahead to make you very happy. I guess you’re won-

dering how I ended up here. Well, my owner

didn’t have enough time for me and

brought me to Animal Control. I’m a true sweetheart who will

make your heart melt. I was so happy to

come out of my kennel for my photo opportunity. It made me so happy to receive

attention and be talked to. Would you make my dream of a family come true? Adopt me today!

►I’ve been living at Animal Control since October 2010

and I sure would like to spend the New Year with my new family. I can pic-ture it now: me curled up in your lap while you drink champagne and watch the ball drop in Times Square on TV. My name is Chloe (FF2868) and I’m a young and sweet Tabby girl who promises to dedicate the rest of my life to making yours very happy. I was

found as a stray in Burgaw, but I love to be held and

am a “great cat”, according to the folks here. Adopt me!

►Since October 2010! That’s how long I’ve been living at Animal Control’s

animal shelter. My name is Natalie (FF2819) and I’m an affecionate, ebony-colored beauty with golden eyes. I

was found as a stray in Burgaw and have been

impressing everyone with my sweet personality since my arrival. I enjoy playing with toys and will rub my face

against your fingers in appreciation of your attention.

Please hurry to the shelter and meet me - I’m wonderful!

►There’s nothing I’d rather do than spend the New Year

(and every year) with you! Hi, dear readers, my name is Penelope (FF3025) and I’m a very affectionate girl who showed up on someone’s

doorstep in Pender County. I just wanted to come in out

of the cold! I’m a friendly girl, a mere 1-year-old, and I

love to be petted, held and kissed. Someone must have

once loved me as I’m so comfortable with humans.

Please take me home today!

◄If you love chocolate (and very sweet dogs), you’ll love me! My name is Hershey (CM3149) and I’m a 2 to 3-year-old boy who is fully grown at just 30 to 35 pounds. It’s like I’m a miniature Chocolate Lab! I lost my home when I chased my owner’s chickens. It’s kinda my instinct to do that, so I really can’t be blamed, but I understand. I’d prefer a home without them anyway! I’m good on a leash and would love to be yours!

►Hi, everybody! My name is Eddie (CM3202) and I’m

an adorable Cocker Spaniel boy who may be mixed with Beagle.

It’s a precious combination, don’t

you think? I may look like a puppy, but I’m fully grown at about 2-years-old and a

light 15 to 20 pounds. I was picked up by the

side of the road on December 13, 2010. I’m as friendly as can be and love to meet new people. If you’d like to share your life with a happy

fellow like me, call or visit the shelter soon!

Hi, I'm Douglas and I am pleased to meet you

and just about anyone else. I am a super sweet, laid-back kind of fellow who would love to

cuddle up with you and look lovingly into your eyes until you fall under my spell. I was tossed into the animal shelter when my mate, Audrey, and I didn't produce enough puppies to sell. Although my

owner did not care enough about me to give me heart-worm preventative, I don't show any signs of being mis-treated and love to be around people. It will be a little

while before I am ready to go to a new home, since I have to undergo heartworm treatment, but I am worth waiting for! So go ahead and ask about me now. To make me a member of your family, please call 919-708-4247or visit

our website at www.cbhr.com.

I am sponsored in honor of all the special pets and people who visit Pine Valley Animal Hospital.

Hello, faithful PawPrints readers!

My name is Wheelie and I’m a very

happy, intelligent and loveable Hound boy who is friendly to

every person and every dog I’ve ever met. I am 4-years-

old, neutered, vacci-nated and on heart-worm prevention. I think it’s safe to say I’d be an excellent companion for any wonderful family!

I’m looking for folks who will kiss me, hug me and tell me everyday that I’m loved. Do you think you’re that special

someone? If so, please hop in the car and come meet me at Paw’s Place. We can take a walk together around the grounds and get better acquainted! If you need driving directions, please call the shelter at 910-845-7297 and

they’ll be happy to give you all the information you need.

I am sponsored by Hank and Grace Harrington. Thank you!

currently living at the shelter with my two other brothers. We have a good time wrestling, romping and cuddling. You

with a loving spirit. I easily sat for my photo and enjoyed getting ear rubs at the same time. I

am already neutered and vaccinated. Let’s go home!

►I’m a playful, happy, puppy girl with one blue eye and one brown! My name is Noodle and it’s

so wonderful to meet you. Wouldn’t you like to meet me in person,

handsome men are from Australia, you know! I’m

is Ace and I’m a 3 to 4-year-old male Labrador Retriever mix. I have an

affectionate personality and a happy demeanor. I’m

neutered, house-trained, leash-trained, vaccinated

and on heartworm prevention. I get along

will someone realize this and come get me?

►Raise your hand if you’re a Dachshund

lover! I hope there are a lot of hands raised because I’m a boy

give you all the love I have, and that’s quite a lot.

Hello, everyone! My name is Ally and I hope you’ll consider adopting

me. I’m a 7-year-old Ridgeback/Yellow Lab

mix girl who desperately wants love and affection. I spent most of my previ-

ous life outdoors and would love a home

where I can come inside and be part of the family. The folks at SOAR have

been teaching me all kinds of great things -

they have two obedience trainers who volunteer

their time at the shelter and they’ve been working with me, as well as with the other canines here. I am a little shy when you first meet me, but a few treats do wonders in

warming me up quickly. You’ll see that I’m a very friendly girl! I am already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I hope you’ll take the time to call SOAR and

come out for a visit. You’ll find a wonderful girl waiting for you! The number is 910-457-6340.

I am sponsored by www.TheKarmaFund.org, thanks!

I’m a fluffy, orange ball of fur named Ivy. To say I’m

handsome is an under-statement! With my bright eyes, long-haired fur and fluffy tail, I’m stunning. I hope you’re ready for a

lifetime of kisses and cud-dles, because that’s what you’ll get if you adopt me. I enjoy meeting new peo-

ple and will walk right up to you, hoping that you’ll rub me. I’m a little boy who

was born around May 17, 2010, and was found sit-

ting by the side of Highway 117. I was named Ivy in honor of my rescuer, who caught

a case of poison ivy while retrieving me! I’m adorable, playful and love to be kissed. I’m also neutered, vacci-nated and litterbox-trained, and I get along just fine with

the other kitties here at the shelter. Please consider taking me home! You can call Pender County Humane Society at

910-259-7022 and soon be gazing at me in person.

My name is Libby but you might want to call me ‘Libby the Lovebug’. I bet you can guess why, but

I’ll tell you anyway: I’m a very sweet and affection-

ate girl who is simply grateful for the touch of a kind hand and any loving words. I was found as a thin stray with my buddy, Gus. He’s a Hound and

is also at the shelter look-ing for a home. I’ve put on weight in the months that I’ve been here and have made quite a posi-

tive impression with my mellow, gentle personality. The folks here have yet to even hear me bark. I’m under 2-years-old and would love to be part of a family. I think I was born for that! I am already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention, so all I need now is for you to come fall in love with me. If you need directions or any

other info, please call SOAR at 910-457-6340.

I am sponsored in appreciation of everyone who has rescued a homeless animal.

I’m Lucy, and I’m looking for a man!

Bunny man is okay, but human man is

essential. My foster parents finally fig-ured out that I am

very partial to men. I can tolerate

women once they prove themselves trustworthy to me, but males – I just

love em! If you’re a guy who loves rab-bits, I will fawn all

over you, love you, lay by your feet, make you laugh

and beg for atten-tion. There’s nothing I won’t do to please you. So if you’re a

guy, thinking you might like a big beautiful bunny for com-panionship, I’m your gal! I’m spayed, litterbox-trained and

weigh 8 pounds. Please call Cape Fear House Rabbit Soci-ety at 910-471-7854 or email [email protected] to

adopt us! You can also visit www.capefearrabbits.org to see other bunnies looking for homes.

I lived in a loving home for years, then everything

changed. My owner be-came ill and could no longer look after me.

There was no one else to take me in and I was

brought to Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue (SOAR). It’s quite a

change to go from a comfy home with familiar sights

and sounds to the strange surroundings of an animal

shelter. My name is Gracie and, at 10-years-old, I’m hoping to find a special person or family who will

bring me back into the home environment where I belong. I enjoy receiving attention, being held, and will happily snuggle up in your arms. I’m also spayed, vaccinated

and litterbox-trained. There’s no doubt that I would make someone very happy with my purring, pleasing personal-ity. If you’d like to meet me, but don’t know how to get

here, please call SOAR at 910-457-6340. They can give you very easy directions and I’ll be so happy to greet you!

I am sponsored in loving memory of Speckles.

Hello up there! Want to go for a roll in the grass with me? My name is Sheba

and I’m a very friendly girl, just 1-year-old. I was

found as a stray in some-one’s yard. As you can

see, I’m a small-sized girl with a slender build. I’m a beautiful creamy-white and

I have the softest brown eyes ever! I’ve heard

some people say that they think I’m a Saluki mix. I’m doing great at the shelter

and am happy and playful. I get along well with every-one - adults, children, dogs

and even cats. I’ve also already been spayed, vaccinated and placed on heartworm prevention. If you’re looking for a

real sweetheart to spend the rest of your life with, I hope you’ll consider me. Just call SOAR at 910-457-6340 and

they’ll tell you how we can get together!

I am sponsored by SOAR in loving memory of all their wonderful, furry friends who made it safely to the

◄I’m a super-sweet boy with a loving heart. And I’m so glad to be on the search for a new home! When SOAR first met

me, I was tied to a chain in the yard, with no food or water to be seen. My owner had moved away and left me there. Now that I’m at SOAR, I’m melting hearts with my

loveable personality and my happiness at being given some attention!

I’m a 1-year-old Golden Retriever/Yellow Lab mix who is neutered,

vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I’m a big boy at 75 pounds, but I know how to sit on command and I take

treats so gently from your fingers. I haven’t yet played with the other dogs at the shelter, but I’ve shown no aggression

to them when they walk outside my kennel. I’ll be a fabulous friend for someone!

►Do you need your very own surfer boy? Catch some waves

with me! My name is Surfer and I’m a

5-month-old orange Tabby who was found as a stray on Caswell

Beach. Now I’m looking for a home

where I can sit on the couch and watch television shows about surfing. I heard Hawaii Five-O features some gnarly waves, dude! I am already neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained and I am so affectionate around people. I love it when they

hold me and cuddle me. I also get along well with cats!

►Hi there! We are Ebony and Jett, two

gorgeous brothers who are very

affectionate and friendly. We’ve been

at SOAR for quite a while and can’t figure

out why we haven’t been snapped up!

We are cuddly, playful and highly

kissable! I’m Ebony and I don’t have a

tail. Jett has a nubbin. I guess that

means we’re Manx cats! Come meet

us and choose the sweetheart you’d

like to take home!

◄I love attention and am very loveable! Can you tell by the way I’m staring intently at the photographer? I want her to put the camera down and pick me up! My name is Arnold and I’m a 5-month-old Tabby boy who was quite scared when I first arrived at SOAR. But boy, have I changed! Now I eagerly look forward to greeting everyone who passes by. I’d be such a good family cat! I’m neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Let’s spend the rest of our lives together!

►I’m a 6-month-old orange Tabby boy named Marma. That’s the short version of Marmalade, get it? I’m a very handsome, loveable

kitten who would be a great best friend for you or

someone in your family. I get along well with other cats, too. In fact, I had

several brothers and sisters with me here at one time, but they’ve all been adopted. It’s my turn! I just love to be held and kissed and have a very

friendly personality. Come meet me and fall in love!

►Hello! I’m an extremely affectionate

Hound boy named Gus. I was found on Ocean Isle as a stray and was so skinny. Since my

arrival, I’ve put on weight and I’ve impressed eve-ryone with my friendly, loving nature. I haven’t even barked yet! I love

to play and am estimated to be around 1-year-old.

I don’t jump up on people and I’m good with other

dogs. You’ll find I’m quite handsome, too, so come on over and meet me!

I May Have “Special Needs” But I Still Need A

Home! Hello! I’m Lola and I’m a very sweet and loving girl. I’m a 3-year-old Shepherd

mix and all I want is to please and be loved. I do have an old cruciate liga-ment injury which requires me to stay on glucosamine chondroiton for my lifetime. It would be helpful if I were hand walked on a regular

basis to strengthen my mus-cles. I don’t really get along

with other female dogs, but I generally interact well with larger, docile male dogs. I have been in a shelter situation for a long time and I’m really wanting a family of my own! I love people and would be a wonderful companion for some lucky person or family. I’m currently staying at a dog board-ing facility and the owners say I behave beautifully. Won’t

you please consider adopting me? Please call the Sunburst Foundation at 910-622-0011 or email

[email protected] for more information.

I am sponsored by the Karl Miller family. Thanks!

Well, you can already see that I’m an intelli-gent girl - notice how I’m sitting on com-

mand for my photo? My name is Sheeba

and my story starts out rather sad. You see, I

was adopted from SOAR as a puppy and was recently returned. My owner is moving overseas to Europe

and I am unable to join him. Now, at 1-year-

old, I’m back at SOAR, longing to be part of a

family again. I’m a female Hound/

Shepherd mix who is house-trained, leash-trained, playful and friendly. I get along with everyone - men, women,

children, cats and other dogs. I’m already spayed, vacci-nated and on heartworm prevention, too! I love receiving attention and am very affectionate in return. I hope you can see what a great companion and best friend I would be. Please call SOAR at 910-457-6340 and let’s get ac-

quainted real soon!

Sunburst Foundation of Wilmington Please call 910-622-0011 or email [email protected] to adopt us!

Blue Hand Home presents the 1st annual Cape Fear Dragon Boat Race and Festival slated for Saturday, June 4th. Wounded Warriors and Sunburst Foundation will be

the recipients. Sunburst Foundation will be using the bulk of the funds raised to help cats and dogs at Pender County Animal Control. By purchasing a seat on a long boat, your

seat will be $50 and you will need to raise at least $50 in pledges. That $100 can provide spay/neutering services for 1 dog or 2 cats, heartworm testing for 10 dogs, Pro-

heart injections (heartworm preventative) for 4-5 canines, etc. Sunburst Foundation has worked to develop pro-

grams at the municipal shelter with the goal of helping to establish a model shelter for other AC's to follow. Please be a part of this proactive approach to helping homeless

cats and dogs have a voice. For more information, please visit the website at www.capefeardragonboat.com.

◄I’m Rosie! I’m a medium-sized Pug/Spitz mix and, at

just 4-years-old, I’m a smart, friendly girl who would be a great agility dog. I adore

children and am friendly to adult humans as well! I am doing fine in getting along with other dogs and have

been working with an obedi-ence trainer. I would love to continue obedience training with my new family. I’m also spayed, vaccinated and on

heartworm prevention. You’d be so lucky to share your life with a great girl like me!

◄Hello! This happy face belongs to me, Ming Ming! At just 2-years of age, I’m a

Boxer/American Bulldog mix girl. I have a very

sweet personality and get along just fine with other dogs and people. I’m al-ready house-trained and crate-trained and I walk

well on a leash. I am also very happy to sit on com-mand for treats! And yes,

I’m already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm pre-vention. Don’t waste another moment - call today!

◄My name is Winston and I’m

looking for a loving family! I’m a big boy at 75 pounds and it’s believed that I’m a

Boxer/Saint Bernard mix. My name is

actually Sir Winston because I can act very dignified, but

sometimes I am silly like Winnie the Pooh. I am sweet and love other dogs. At just 1½-years-old, I am

also neutered, vacci-nated and on heart-worm prevention. I

would do best in an active, adult, cat-free home with another dog, probably a female who really likes to play.

I’m also house and crate-trained and doing well on a leash with a gentle leader. Come meet me!

◄I’m Hero, and when I posed for this photo, my

sweet face certainly disguised the rough shape

I was in. You see, the Sunburst Foundation later took me to the vet for an exam, and I had three

decayed molars that had to be extracted, erlichiosis (from tick exposure) and heartworm disease. I am now recovering nicely in a

foster home and doing well. Unfortunately, my medical bill is rising and will continue to rise while I undergo

heartworm treatment. Any donations toward my medical care would be greatly appreciated. Please send your tax-deductible donation to: Sunburst Foundation, P.O. Box 7527, Wilmington, NC 28406. Thanks for helping me!

◄I’m Dawson and I love all people, especially children! I’m a 3 to 4-year-old, flat-coated Retriever mix and I’d dearly love to belong to your family. I am house-trained, crate-trained, neutered, vaccinated, and on heartworm prevention. I play well with other dogs and I’ve had no problem with cats. Call today so we can meet real soon!

Shelter News & Events

‘Cool to Adopt’ Video is on YouTube! Visit www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Q6y3cuL6zE or go to Monty's Home (www.montyshome.org) and click on icon to see the finished project. The video features dozens of local pet lovers singing in unison that “It's Cool to Adopt, don't waste your money in a puppy shop!” The tune is catchy, the people are varied, and the pets are rescued. Most importantly, the message is crucial to change the trendy purchase of puppy mill or backyard bred pets. ADOPT is the mes-sage...check it out and pass it on.

Volunteers Needed: Adopt-an-ANGEL Adopt-An-ANGEL is in need of mature, responsible, dedicated people to volunteer at adoption fairs Saturdays and Sundays at Petco. Volunteers should be flexible, able to multitask and must get along with people and animals in a very stressful environment where there may be limited resources. You must be strong enough to walk large dogs, willing to carry large cages, willing to scoop litter boxes, pick up dog poop, and work with both dogs and cats. Adopt-An-ANGEL is a network of animal lovers that takes animals from Animal Control when they have run out of time or have special needs beyond what the shelter is able to provide. Through the week they also have animal trans-port jobs available where cats and dogs need rides back and forth to veterinary hospitals. Adopt-An-ANGEL pays no money or benefits for either of the jobs. The perk is finding a homeless animal a home or giving it a ride and doing a good deed for the day. Please call Marlo at 910-616-3708 if you are interested.

Drink Wine and Help the Cats! The Ruffian Foundation, a feral cat sanctuary, invites all animal lovers to its 3rd annual fundraiser at Noni Bacca Winery on Sunday, January 23rd, from 2pm to 6pm at 420 Eastwood Road., Unit 108 (near Racine Blvd.). It will be a wonderful evening of wine tast-ing, raffle prizes (including dog or cat boarding, fabulous Japanese dinners, an acupuncture session, 50/50 raffle, and many more), good food, and ex-cellent company. Chris Bellamy will also be playing! Please help them continue to help cats live a safer life. A $5 donation (tax-deductible) will be gratefully accepted at the door for much needed cat food, bedding, etc. All pro-ceeds benefit the feral cat sanctuary, a 501(c)3 non-profit, all volunteer, charitable organization. For more info, visit http://zadventurer.org/RF/

A Very Happy Ending Readers may remember Jagger, who appeared in the De-cember 2009 issue after being hit by a car and undergoing leg am-putation. Pender Endangered Animal Rescue (PEAR) reports

that he is doing very well and was adopted into a loving family! Jagger recently marched in the 2010 Wil-mington Holiday parade. Thank you to all those who donated money to Jagger’s vet bill back in 2009.

A Special Thank You to Readers The dogs and cats at Pender County Animal Control’s animal shelter are enjoying a warmer, happier winter thanks to an outpouring of donations and monetary con-tributions from the public. Says Darlene Clewis, the ani-mal shelter’s manager, “On behalf of The Friends of the Pender Shelter and Pender County Animal Control, we would like to thank everyone that helped with the gener-ous donations. All of our dogs now have dog houses and blankets. We even had donations of food and other sup-plies. If anyone would like to donate additional items, please send an e-mail to me at [email protected]. Thank you again so much!” The shelter’s most pressing need currently is dog/puppy food, cat/kitten food, and cat litter. Call 910-259-1349 or 910-279-3196 for more information.

Sponsor A Brick and Pave the Future The New Hanover County Animal Control is holding an ongoing Brick Fundraiser to benefit its new spay/neuter facility and adoption play area. Sponsored bricks, which can be inscribed to honor or remember your pets and loved ones, will be laid as a walkway in the play area and will lead up to the spay/neuter facility. Brick sponsorships start at $50 for two lines of inscrip-tion and $75 for three lines. The cost for businesses is $100. A paw print can be etched in the brick for an addi-tional $8. A portion of the proceeds will be used to equip the spay/neuter facility and adoption play area. Please call the New Hanover Animal Control at 910-798-7500 for more information or stop by the facility to fill out an order form. Order forms can also be faxed to your home or business.

Hello, my name is Minnie-Moo. I’m just 2-years

young and a very loving, energetic

and well-mannered girl.

That means that I’m both house-

trained and crate-trained! I love car rides and walks on the

beach (or any other adventure

you can throw my way). As a huge

bonus, I am currently residing with a professional dog trainer who works with me every day. I can get a little too

excited around small children and other animals so I should be your only fur baby. I am spayed and up to date on vaccinations. If you are ready to begin our adventure together, please call Amy at 910-253-0501. I’ll be waiting

for you.

I am sponsored by Francesca Slaughter in loving memory of Casper and Lucy.

I’m CoCo MoonPie and I’m a 9-year-old female Boxer mix. Seven years ago, I

was found wandering on Highway 17 by a

kind lady who scooped me up and rescued me. I’ve been living at Paw’s Place ever since! Please, won’t

someone take a chance on me and

bring me home? I’m a truly wonderful girl. I enjoy chew toys and being around other

dogs and people. I’m so very sweet - I love

giving lots of delicious doggie kisses. If you have a 6-foot fenced in yard and a cat-free home, I hereby promise to be your loyal, loving, lifetime buddy. To find out more, or if you

need driving directions, please call Paw’s Place at 910-845-7297. Let’s get to know one another, OK?

I am sponsored by Christine Watkins of A Pet Nanny.

My name is Biscuit and thanks for stopping to read my story. I want to say a

very special thank you to all those who’ve helped me

with my medical expenses! The growths I had on my face and behind my right ear are h-i-s-t-o-r-y! And

my pearly whites are again both pearly and white

again. I am a very outgoing and affectionate Sheltie girl. My foster family is amazed

at my level activity. I just love life! Since arriving at Sheltie Rescue Boot Camp, my foster dad has been helping me regain my svelte figure. I only have a pound or two left to lose. At 9-years of age, I am house-trained, leash-trained, come when called, crate-trained and good in the car. I am

ready to graduate to my forever home. To make me a mem-ber of your family, please call Triangle Sheltie Rescue at 919-306-5148 or 910-558-6963. You may also visit our

Hello, my name is Roo! I am a beautiful, female Ameri-can Classic Brown Tabbycat. I was found in the Hog-

gard High School parking lot in Wilmington and brought to my foster home on Oak Island. My approximate date of birth is October 18, 2010. At first, I liked to sleep in a bag (pouch) and therefore was called "Roo," as in Kan-garoo. I am sweet, playful and used to a big dog and other cats. I'm already spayed and have had my first round of kitten shots. If you would like to meet me, please call my SOAR foster mom at 910-278-4437.

Purrfect Pet Adoptions Please call 910-329-4700 to adopt us!

We are sponsored in honor of all cats and kittens who have found loving homes with forever families.

►I’m a 2-year-old girl named Bingo and I’d love

to be part of your family! I’m a very sweet and

friendly feline who gets along well with other kitties. I am already spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and

litterbox-trained. I’m a quiet girl who just wants a nice, cozy life with people who adore me. Oh, and if

you have a peacock feather or a few toys for me to play

with, that would be great, too. Swing by today!

►My name is Jack and I’m not at all a wiggle worm. No sir, when you hold me in your

arms, I don’t try to get down. I stay put and make biscuits with my

paws. Some cats don’t like to be held, but not

me! I’m an 8-month-old boy who was found in a

cardboard box on a hot day. I was so very tiny at the time. I was bottlefed by my foster mom, so I’m extremely comfortable being with humans. Come over and meet me today! I’ll be happy to let you hold me.

►A very kind lady found me in her neighborhood.

Someone had abandoned me on the street! My name

is Hershel and I’m a 7-month-old kitten with

sleek, soft, ebony-colored fur. I’m a very sweet boy

who would be perfect in any household. You see, I get along well with other cats but I also am fine on my

own. I like to be held, but I don’t mind being at home while you go to work. I’m

loving, but not clingy. I’d be such a wonderful addition to your household. Come visit!

◄▲We two brothers - Stark and Eric - were found all by ourselves

on a neighborhood street. I’m Stark, the Tabby on the left with the white chest. Eric has a glossy black coat. We

are just 8-months-old and have friendly, affectionate per-sonalities. We’re already neutered, vaccinated and litter-

box-trained. You can adopt us separately or together!

►The power of prayer works! You see, I

was at a local church praying for someone to help me. Next thing I

know, I’ve been scooped up and carried to safety.

Now all I need is a family! My name is

Princeton and I’m an 8-month-old male kitten. I’m a loving boy who is happy to be held and

kissed. In fact, they call me a certified “people cat” and an “absolute

doll”. You can rub my belly and flop me

around. If it’s affection you want, be sure to adopt me!

►I was abandoned as a baby kitten, so my

wonderful foster mom held me in her arms and gave me formula from a baby

bottle. Being held like that has made me extra sweet

and friendly toward humans. I’m quite accustomed to

being kissed and cuddled! My name is Stanley and I’m

a 7-month-old boy who is neutered, vaccinated and

litterbox-trained. I’m great with other cats and I’d love

to be your best friend!

Page 48: PawPrints Magazine January 2011

Have you ever wanted to make a

difference in your life or another’s life but didn’t know how? Well, here is your

chance! I’m Katy, a 12-year-old giant

Schnauzer who is in desperate need of a

loving home to spend the rest of my days. All of my previous life was spent outside in a confined dirt and concrete “prison”. I was so deprived of exercise that my back legs atrophied, which has now rendered me un-

able to jump. I am a most forgiving lady. Despite my previ-ous, lonely, isolated condition, I have a great and loving

personality! Schnauzer Rescue of the Carolinas truly be-lieves that I will adjust to the comforts of real life inside a

loving home. I have shown absolutely no signs of aggres-sion whatsoever, and am very appreciative of all the atten-tion I am now receiving! I am deaf so I watch the move-

ment of my humans closely for interaction and am very in-telligent - I catch on quickly. I have a hypo-thyroid condition

that is easily managed through once a day medication. I get along well with other dogs and ignore cats. I have had

so many days of neglect and abuse, so now I need to spend my remaining days in a forever home that showers me with love, affection, and attention - things I deserved from the very beginning. If you would like to open your home to a deserving, loving, gentle giant, please visit

www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org. There you can fill out an application online and view other adoptable rescues.

If you need an application mailed or faxed, call 910-264-8300 to have an application sent.

I’m a family dog who has somehow ended

up at a shelter! I hope you’ll read this and

bring me home where I belong. My name is Izzy and I’m a loving girl, just 4-years-old,

who is friendly to eve-ryone I meet. I am

already house-trained, leash-trained and obe-dient - I know how to

sit on command. I get along great with chil-dren and other dogs. I was once part of a family but my owner moved and couldn’t

take me. I’m a perfect size at 32 pounds - not too big and not too small. They tell me I’m a Lab/Terrier mix. I’m al-ready spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I’m such a happy, friendly girl and I love to receive atten-tion. Why not bring your kids to SOAR and meet me? I’d

love to go for a walk on the grounds. You just might realize I’m the companion you’ve been searching for! Please call 910-457-6340 for driving directions or any other questions

you might have about me. Can’t wait to meet you!

I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you!

PENDER ENDANGERED ANIMAL RESCUE

Hello and Happy New Year! My name is Mr. McDuff and I am

hoping for a great new home for the New Year. I have had an in-credibly hard beginning to my life. You see, someone had thrown me

away...they actually threw me over the fence at the dog ken-

nels. Yup, that is where I ended up, skin and bones and in some serious help. Pender

Endangered Animal Rescue (PEAR) has taken me in and now I am gaining weight and getting healthy. I am a

youngster and need a home. If you’d like to adopt me, please call PEAR at 910-675-0867 or send an email to

[email protected] for more information.

Various Local Rescues We are all from different Animal Rescues. Please read our stories!

DOOK-N-DANCE FERRET SHELTER

My name is Marshmallow and I came to rescue from a lady who

could no longer care for me or afford my vet care. I’m approximately 6 to 7-years-old. I suffer from adrenal disease. When I first came to the shelter, I only had hair on my head

and feet. Since then, I’ve had a me-latonin shot which allowed the symp-

toms to abate some and let me grow all my hair back. I get along great with most other ferrets. To sponsor my care or adopt me, email at [email protected] or call 910-

Imagine well-trained me, trotting proudly by your side as we take our daily walk! My name is Chaz and I will be the very next graduate of A Shelter Friend’s New Leash on Life Program at the Bladen County Cor-rectional facility. In this program I

have learned excellent manners like sit, stay, come, heel, plus more! They say I am “just a doll,” a happy, young,

medium-sized boy who gets along well with other dogs. Don’t you know I would make the

perfect addition to your family? I’ve already been neutered and vaccinated. Please call Denise at 910-862-1728 to

learn how we can meet! I can’t wait, can you?! No one will ever love you like a dog who was once abandoned. Visit A

A SHELTER FRIEND OF SE NORTH CAROLINA

COLUMBUS HUMANE SOCIETY

My name is Mako and I'm 10 to 12-months-old, weigh approxi-mately 40 pounds and am a

Husky mix. I have one brown eye and one blue eye and I

must say that I'm a very hand-some boy. I’m looking for just the right family. I'm very ener-getic and I love to run and play and have a good time. I'm fully

vetted (all shots, neutered, heartworm free) and micro-

chipped (can be transferred into new owners name). I'm a very

lucky boy who was rescued just hours before being put down and I show just how happy I am by giving plenty of

kisses. Please call Columbus Humane Society at 910-640-1505 or email [email protected].

PHOENIX LANDING FOUNDATION

My name is Frankie. I am a female Ringneck parakeet and am 8-years-

old. As I have grown older, I have be-come more vocal and my current own-ers are no longer able to keep me as

they are expecting a new baby and are afraid I may scare the baby. I am used

to having playtime outside of and on top of my cage daily. I love to get regu-lar spray baths and have a great deal of fun playing with paper towel rolls. My

favorite treats are kiwi fruit and apples. I am looking for that loving family who understands Ringneck parakeets and desperately need a foster home. Won't you please give me a chance? To foster or adopt me, or another of

the many parrots of all species, contact Phoenix Landing at www.phoenixlanding.org (click on adoption/foster), email us

at [email protected] or call 866-749-5634.

OPERATION TOPCAT

If there is such a thing as twin cats then my brother, Casper, and I would fit the

bill. We look very much alike except for the black

markings on the top of our heads. I'm Snowy and I'm a friendly guy who likes to play and be petted. My

brother does too but he’s a bit shy so if you could adopt

both of us, that would be really great. We have been together since birth. Please

email [email protected] or call 910-200-0612 to find out more about me. To meet some of the other kitties here,

FUREVER FRIENDS ANIMAL RESCUE

My name is Blackie and I was rescued by Pender

County Animal Control Shel-ter. I had been hit by a car and my back leg was pretty

banged up. They transferred me to Furever Friends so

that I could get medical treat-ment. My hip and leg had

been broken and have since been repaired. Now I’m go-ing to physical therapy a few times a week to help build the muscles back up in my

leg. I’m a very happy, super sweet dog who is full of love. I’m approximately 3-years-old, vaccinated, neutered, leash-trained, crate-trained and I’m good with kids, cats and other dogs. I did test positive for heartworms but will be treated for them at no additional cost to my adoptive family. I would really love a home be-cause I’m tired of being in a cage. For more information or to adopt me, please call 910-383-2100 (Monday through

Saturday between 8am-6pm).

My name is Cobra! I'm a super playful and very curious guy! I

was found in a dumpster and was fortunate to be brought to the

Carolina Beach Animal Hospital where the Pleasure Island Paws

group took me in. They have tested me for Feline Leukemia and FIV and both came back negative. I have even been

given my shots and am soon to be neutered. So why not take a few minutes to come

down and visit with me! I am sure you won't want to leave without me! Please call 910-458-3000 for more info on

me and the adoption process or for directions.

CAPE FEAR HOUSE RABBIT SOCIETY

Hi, I’m Elle, another big white bunny rescued

from being falcon food. I am very sweet once you get to know me, but I really think I would love a

bunny companion. I am very playful,

and want to be out of my pen dancing all day long. My foster mom says

she loves to watch me. I love my

hard plastic toys and I toss them

and flip them in the air. It is really so much fun, especially when they land in my water bowl! I was so scared when I was first rescued, but life is wonderful now. All I need is a

home of my own with lots of room to run around to my heart’s content - I will be totally happy. Won’t you be that

one? Please call Cape Fear House Rabbit Society at 910-471-7854 or email [email protected] to adopt us! You can also visit www.capefearrabbits.org to see other

bunnies looking for homes.

PET FRIENDS OF DUPLIN COUNTY

My name is Toby and I'm a handsome gray Tabby kitten with white paws. I was found as a stray. A little guy like

me wouldn't have had much luck surviv-ing out there all alone! I'm 3-months-old now and my foster mom says I'm great entertainment, always exploring and playing. I was tested for FIV and Feline Leukemia and was negative for

both. I'm up to date on my shots and neutered. Do you need some entertainment in your life? Please call

910-271-3101 for more information.

CAROLINA ANIMAL PROTECTION SOCIETY

Hi, my name is Boots. I am a black and white tuxedo kitty who is already neutered. I am a 1-year-old boy who was

rescued by a nice woman and turned over to CAPS. I have a visual impairment due to bilateral scarring but I am not blind. I am very playful and get along well with other cats and dogs. I love to knead and nuzzle a soft, fluffy blanket, especially at night. I love attention and enjoy cuddling. I would love to have a forever home but I need to be with

older children or adults. To adopt me, email [email protected] or call 910-330-1376.

URGENT, URGENT! We Need to Find Homes Soon! Hi there, my name is Page and

this is my best friend Coal. We’ve lived in a home together

for many years and are so sad to be searching for a new place to lay our heads. It would be won-derful to be adopted together, but we can be adopted sepa-rately if we each go to a loving home. I’m an 8 to 9-year-old

female Shepherd mix and I’m a 95 pound teddy bear. Coal is an 8-year-old male Lab mix with an easy smile and a loving person-

ality. We are house-trained, obedient and eager to

please. We love going for walks, playing with children above the age of six and we

have lived harmoniously with a cat. We would be great com-panions for anyone. We are

spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccinations and on heartworm prevention. I do take glucosa-

mine for some arthritis in my hips, but I am responding well. Because we’ve lived in a home all our lives, we have great house manners and are well-adjusted, social, friendly dogs.

Would you please consider adopting one of us? Or per-haps both? We promise to give you so much love and so

much companionship! You’ll never be lonely again. Please call the Sunburst Foundation at 910-622-0011 or email [email protected] for more information.

Hope to meet you soon!

COAL

Toss me a tennis ball and I’m in heaven! In

fact, that’s what I’m wait-ing for in my photo. You can’t see it, but my tail is a blur from wagging in anticipation. My name is Fly Boy (CM2431) and I’m the most fun

and friendly dog you’ll ever meet. You won’t have a boring moment with me by your side. I love life and I love peo-ple. Second to tennis

balls is my love of water. So if you’re an active

person who likes playing fetch or visiting the beach, I’m your fellow! I’ve been at the

shelter since May 2010, so I’m really looking forward to being a new family member. I’m a Lab mix who is good on a leash and just 1 to 2-years-old. I have a happy, playful personality and would love to meet you real soon! Please

call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196.

I am sponsored by Cindy Meyers and Patrick Bathurst

in loving memory of Harley and Maggie.

MID-ATLANTIC GREAT DANE RESCUE LEAGUE

My name is Obi and this is my brother, Rowland. We are brothers who were surrendered to the rescue. We are 6-year-olds and have been together our whole lives - won't cope well if we are

separated. Even though we are mature, we are very loving and still like to run and play! We love to lean and give hugs. We would prefer a home with a larger female and we don't like cats. When we sleep, we pile into a colossal crate in a

big pile. We love stuffed toys but sometimes enjoy de-stuffing them even more. Do you have room for me and my brother in your home? For more info about us, contact the NC Chapter Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League by calling Terri at 252-566-8934 or visiting www.magdrl.org.

Are you looking for a precious little girl who loves life, enjoys car rides, and longs for cuddling time? If so, then

look no further! I’m Trixie, a 5-year-old, 14 pound female mini-Schnauzer. I am crate-trained, house-trained, and I walk well on a leash. Sometimes I just mosey on into my crate to relax for a bit - it’s kind of my safe haven. Even though I am petite in stature, don’t let that fool you because I am full of per-sonality! I am a happy little girl but I

would be even happier if I could find a loving forever home! I am spayed, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm negative, and micro-chipped. If you would like a wonderful addition to your home, visit www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org.

There you can fill out an application online and view other adoptable rescues. If you need an application mailed or

faxed, please call 910-264-8300.

SCHNAUZER RESCUE OF THE CAROLINAS

Hello again... Chantik here. Well, Thanksgiving and Christmas have

come and gone and I'm still waiting for my new forever home. I really am a good girl, mature at 5 to 6 but not too old, totally house-trained, love walks, and ride well in the car. I'll even toler-ate other dogs! I do say tolerate, as

I'm not a huge fan of playing with other dogs, but I'm ok with just hanging out with them. I'm not a great fan of small children, so it is best that I be in a home where there aren't any of those. They think I am part Aus-

tralian Shepherd and part Golden Retriever. Everyone says I have beautiful eyes and am "unique" looking (whatever that means). To give me a forever home,

please contact the Cape Fear Golden Retriever Rescue at 910-791-5001 or visit www.cfgoldenrescue.com.

CAROLINA BORDER COLLIE RESCUE

My name is Early and I currently live with 5 other Border Collies. I love to play with toys, enjoy chasing balls

and I really like treats. I work on my house-training skills every day and I am getting better and better. I am

looking for a home where I can get a lot of attention and exercise. I do not like crates but to make up for it, I am warm and toasty when we cuddle on these cold winter nights. I like chil-

dren as long as they are not too young. To adopt me, please visit CBCR.org or call 919-682-6125 for more info about me or other Border Collie's available for adoption.

My name is Flame and I’m just 2-years old. I am an average size for a Greyhound, and just look at

me, muscles everywhere! I love to run in the yard at the kennel and

play with the other girls in my group. I sure would be happy to find someone who will give me a

wonderful loving place to call home. I promise you won't be sorry, as I am so ready to give

hugs and kisses to my new family. Please contact Barbara at 910-540-9644 for more info on adopting me. You can view other greyhounds looking for

GREYHOUND FRIENDS OF NORTH CAROLINA

CAROLINA BASSET HOUND RESCUE

Hi everyone, I am Maybell. Most peo-ple won't consider adopting an older

dog, but I wanted to let you know that if you take a chance adopting me, I'll show you the joys of owning a jewel

Basset. I am petite and my goal weight is between 30 to 35 pounds. I

like playing with my younger foster sisters and I enjoy being inside, but

also love investigating the outdoors. I know not to get on the furniture but to use a dog bed, how

to use a doggie door to go potty, and appreciate meals and treats. Like many older dogs, a house with a lot of

steps isn't for me. I'd love to have the chance to wrap you around my paw and show you that I am the perfect house puppy. To make me a member of your family, please call

919-708-4247 or visit our website at www.cbhr.com.

Meow there! My name is Sweetie because I'm one of the sweetest cats you'll ever meet. I'm about 1-year-old,

spayed, current on my shots, and litterbox-trained. I'm

extremely affectionate and love to be cuddled. I also get

along great with the other kitties in the playroom.

Speaking of the playroom, you should really come visit! It’s a cage-less environment, which

means that we felines are always free to move about.

You can come right on in and sit among us! You’ll find us eating, napping, cuddling and playing. It’s a cat lover’s

paradise! You can pet me for a while and get to know me. I’m sure you’ll soon understand how I got my name. Now don’t forget - if you are looking for a feline playmate and best friend, you’ve come to the right place! Call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022 and tell them

you’re coming over!

I am sponsored by NCBeachBargains.com in honor of Tim and Linda and Erica Scaife. Thank you!

I’m a wonderful fam-ily dog named Bella!

Look at my photo and you will see how

well-behaved and obedient I am. All

they did was hold up a treat, say ‘sit’, and I sat right down with no hesitation. I’m a 2-year-old girl who

was found at Animal Control with my nine puppies. They have all been weaned so I’m ready to find a

home where it’s my turn to be the baby. I love everyone and

never meet a stranger. I’m a brindle Boxer mix who is house-trained, leash-trained and great with children. I’m

sweet, gentle and calm and just an all-around terrific girl. I hope someone will recognize what a jewel they would

have in me. Please call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022. I can’t wait to get started on our new life

together!
