Welsh Castles Relay

Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th June

from Carole Harrison

So it‟s 3 weeks to go to the annual Welsh Castles Relay and Team Captain Dave Livingstone asks me if I would help organise the event this year. “Yes,” I said. “No problem,” I said. “Have we got a full team?” I said. “Err, not quite,” he said!! So with the usual Altrincham finesse and last minute juggling about, Graham and I managed to get a decent team together and they all did a pretty fine job. There were a few issues along the way but what happens at Welsh Castles stays at Welsh Castles!! Leg 1: Caernarfon to Penygroes (9.1 miles) - an excellent 15th place

by Duncan Wilson

“Leg one of the Welsh Castles Relay undoubtedly has the most unusual start of any race I've done. The race sponsors led the sixty four runners on a slow procession around Caernarfon castle and the race began as we reached a very narrow footbridge over Afon Seiont. We ran the first four miles on a flat coast road, with a cool breeze making for good conditions, and I managed to settle into a second group of runners in sixth to ninth place. We all took turns to do the hard work at the front, but once we turned off the coast road and hit the hills my lack of race fitness showed and I quickly slowed down. After a brief tussle with a runner from the Haarlem Globetrotters (no, not those ones) I completely blew up at six miles. Luckily for me, the rising temperatures meant everyone had started to struggle; I was only overtaken by three runners in the last three miles and managed to finish in a respectable fifteenth place. The atmosphere for the last four miles or so was by far the best I've encountered. The cycle path to Penygroes was packed with supporters ringing bells, waving flags, and cheering on all runners whatever their allegiances. It was good to see some familiar faces urging me on when I was clearly struggling, with special mention to Mansel Pope and Dave Telford for their encouragement at the finish when I could barely put one foot in front of the other. The biggest thanks has to go to our organising team though: to Dave Livingstone, for getting the ball rolling, and to Graham and Carole Harrison for doing all the legwork work that ensured we had a team out at this fantastic event for the Sixth year running. Well done to everyone who ran, and roll on 2017.”

Welsh Castles Relay

Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th June

Leg 2 saw Paul Abraham (pictured right) have an excellent run

coming home in 11th place on a very hot day.

He was greeted by the usual Altrincham banter and a little

catch-up with Colin “panther” Banno-Thornton!

Leg 3 saw Matt Kelly have an excellent race coming home in

16th place on the first mountain stage of the weekend and to

be greeted by the welcome sight of Steve Renny offering him

a pint and some warm and wise words from Alan along the way.

Leg 4 saw WCR newbie Dave Telford (pictured below) tackle a lovely flat leg to Harlech and coming a very credible 27th:

“I have wanted to do this race for years. Now I have experienced

it I cannot wait for next year and hope to make a full weekend of

it. Thanks everyone as the oldest member of the team for your

encouragement out on the course.”

Leg 5 saw another WCR newbie Lora Blann (right) with a baptism of fire and intense heat come a very respectable 17th and, more importantly, second lady and she did eventually manage to find her “boys“ in the very large car park at Barmouth beach.

Welsh Castles Relay

Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th June

Leg 6 saw new member, and Dave and Andy‟s housemate, Karl Lee have a brilliant run to come home in 10th place and then to have another baptism of fire - meeting all the crew on the fun bus that he had never met before. Thanks Karl for your brilliant effort and a very big welcome to the ADAC team. Leg 7 saw WCR stalwart Mark Hunter (below right with Graham) tackle a very tough mountainous leg

and a very respectable time and place as usual from him in 28th place.

Leg 8 was run by our Stage Winner -

Dave „I‟m going to take it easy‟ Norman:

“This was my second Welsh Castles Relay, having taken part in the clubs first appearance at the event in 2011. That year, I tackled leg 3 and managed to (just) win the stage, really enjoyed the whole weekend and had it ear-marked as a must do event on the calendar! For various reasons (usually post marathon fatigue!) I hadn't taken part since, so when the opportunity to take part again this year came up, I jumped at the chance. Again, I was allocated a stage on the first day, this time tackling stage 8. With recent training focussed on 5K, I was a bit concerned that my training would leave me underprepared for a hilly 10.5 mile race. I decided to start very conservatively and spent the first four miles in third place, occasionally drifting a few yards off the leading two runners on the early down-hills as I felt they were pushing a little too much down them. Shortly after 4 miles, I started to feel that the other two runners were starting to feel the early pace and the warm conditions and decided to move to the front. I found that once I hit the front, I was able to find a much more comfortable rhythm and started to slowly move away from the others. The stage was almost all uphill for the first 7 miles and then undulating for the final 3 miles. I was surprised at the finish line to find that I had pulled almost four minutes clear to win the stage and had obviously judged the effort well. Having run on the opening day I was then able to enjoy the rest of the weekend, watching the remaining 12 stages and joining the 'fun bus' with Lord Hardman, Bev, Bob Buckley and the rest. If you haven't yet run the Welsh Castles, I can thoroughly recommend it to you. The atmosphere, camaraderie and uniqueness of the event will inspire you when you run and it will definitely become a „must do‟ on your own racing calendar.”

Dave on his way to victory on Stage 8

Welsh Castles Relay

Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th June

Leg 10 „the toughie‟, a half marathon on hills starting at 17.50 Which mad fool would “volunteer” for that one David Hughes?

by David Hughes (pictured right with Graham)

“After seeing Matt Kelly start Stage 3 and Paul Abraham finish Stage 2 we made our way from Criccieth to the start of stage 10. This was my first WCR mountain stage and I knew it would be a tough one, with a 170 metre climb in the first 2 km. By 5 miles most of the hills were behind me and I could settle into a rhythm and start to catch runners ahead of me. The finish at Newtown was fantastic with all the teams gathered round. Thanks to the Alty team for cheers and liquid refreshment. The noisy support from all the teams along the course was great. There's nothing quite like the WCR!”

Day 2 saw Captain Dave Livingstone on Leg 11 with the early morning 7am start that no one wants to do - his “punishment” for being on holiday the week before the relay. Thanks as always Dave for all your hard work and efforts - it is very much appreciated by all of us. Leg 12 saw Bev tackle a new leg for her and after a stay in the B&B with the Alty crew she was primed and ready for action, producing an excellent run to be third placed female and second FV. Leg 13 was Carole Harrison (pictured left):

“Glad to get this leg over with and concentrate again on getting everyone to the right places at the right times. Thanks to Alan for his words of encouragement and all the teams along the way who supplied me with much needed water on this extremely hot day. I managed a credible 32nd and 3rd FV.”

Leg 9 saw another WCR stalwart Tom „I‟m not late today‟ Lavin have an excellent and steady run. Thanks as always for being there and being part of the team Tom.

Welsh Castles Relay

Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th June

Leg 14 „the killer leg‟ - Thanks for volunteering Steve Renny!

by Steve Renny (pictured right)

“I was on the fun bus and with Duncan getting the show on the road we headed out of Caernarfon and on to the 20 legs of some of the most beautiful scenery in the UK. With the sun shining and Bob driving we were soon at Criccieth. On to leg 3 where I have started the tradition of giving the finisher a pint - Bev, Adrian and this year Matt Kelly the grateful recipient. We seemed to be at Newtown in no time and rounding off the day on Leg 10. We camped at the sports centre and, after a chippy tea, Dave Livs ,Pat Bonner and I rambled into town to sample some local ales. We rocked up at the Sportsman Pub and after being joined by Dan and partner, Andy & Dave Norman and white Kenyan Karl Lee we saved a few beers going off. Dave Livs got day two off to a flying start and, as the temperature began to rise, Pat and I began to ponder our nutritional prep - i.e. chips „n beer. The support on the relays is fantastic. With the hot weather, everyone began handing runners water and encouragement. This year I had volunteered for Leg 14 Drovers Arms, about 1000 foot climb for 3.5 miles after an undulating 10K. I have seen Matt Kelly, Mike Berks and Andy Pickford tackle this leg on previous years, all posting great times and getting kudos for the bargain. I had run London feeling confident in my training and was looking forward to testing myself on a mountain leg. Dave Norman summed up the Welsh Castles Relay: “It's everything that's good about running clubs in this country.” Dave won his leg in style by about 5 minutes but still stayed the weekend, supporting other runners and I'll never forget the the shout, “He likes to move it, move it,” out of Andy‟s car as I began the brutal climb up to the Red Kite centre. I began my leg cautiously, as I had gone too quick at London and this was the first time I'd raced since, so I let people get ahead and settled into a nice rhythm with the aim of finishing well. The road bends left after 10K and then climbs. I had found a buddy who was matching me stride for stride and we worked off each other and overtook quite a few vests. I was very honoured to see the club flag and fun bus at the top of the mountain and this gave me the boost to finish strong, leaving my buddy I headed for the top. My time was about 6 minutes slower than my fellow Alty athletes on Leg 14 but I was pleased and had gained a few places on the hill. A great experience and I would like to thank Carole and everyone who took the time out to give me and the other guys the opportunity to take part in an awesome event.”

Leg 15 to Brecon

from Dan Martell (pictured right with Graham)

“12.8 miles predominantly downhill to Brecon... Sounded straight

forward to me! It wasn't! After an uphill start, all was going good if

not a bit warm before a number of downhill and undulating sections

got me to around 10 miles in reasonable shape in about 22nd

position, the remaining 2.8 miles went rather less swimmingly for

reasons those at the finish know, as I announced it over the finish

line! The convoy of cars got me through the event which as a first

time Welsh Castles runner found to be a great experience although

it did confirm that a trip to the pub the night before running in those

temperatures may not be ideal running preparation... Who would

have thought!?”

Welsh Castles Relay

Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th June

Leg 16 was a very tough hill leg up to Brecon reservoir for Patrick Bonner (pictured below left) with searing midday heat and little race fitness prior to the relays.

Thanks for supporting the team and hope this hasn‟t put you off doing the relays again.

Leg 17 Graham „no mates‟ Harrison (pictured below right):

“Lining up at the start of Leg 17, Brecon Reservoir, having done this leg previously, I knew what to expect, a fast downhill section. So we‟re off up and running. I check my watch for pace, 6.10, then 6.20. Am I going to crash and burn? Having said that it was 25 degrees. I latch on to two runners. I don‟t see any of my own support, they must be held up in traffic. Eventually I see the one mile to go marker. I hear people shouting my name and giving me encouragement. Is it my team mates? No it‟s Jerry Smith and the Sale bus. I smile and wave. I take over the two runners I‟ve been tracking, I approach the park gate, only 300m to go, they won‟t catch me now. The session training kicks in, this is my medal, well not quite. I finished 16th, I‟m happy with that. I cross the finish line, grab my goody bag, then 30 seconds later Carole runs up the steps apologising. Don‟t worry about it I say, all good fun, and a great weekend, with fantastic people.”

Welsh Castles Relay

Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th June

Legs 18 & 19 run by the Campbells

from Lockie (pictured below)

“Having learnt last year that Mansel can judge the width of a van down to the thickness of a layer of paint, and that a takeaway from a UK restaurant is so sophisticated you get real crockery and cutlery to take with you (well Bob and Ken do anyway), I was quite happy to continue my education into English customs this year via the WCR. What I now know is that arriving 58 seconds before your leg begins is fine, particularly on a hot day when a warm-up is most likely counter-productive. Previously I might have been in a state of anxiety but Dave Livingstone‟s pervading calm during the touch and go drive meant all nerves were well settled by the time we pulled into the start area. I was particularly looking forward to the heat. Running in temperatures touching 30 degrees was bound to shed the pound - something that was obviously needed given Bev‟s motivational pep talk which ended questioning when it was that I last saw my knees. With that kindness ringing in my ears, along with the innocently remarked “most teams put their weakest runners on this leg” I waddled off, attempting to break into a sweat, glancing down every so often to see if progress was being made. It was, and it was tough, but on completion I was really pleased with my run. Not quite at the pace I was aiming for, which I‟ll put down to the heat, but I did manage to concentrate and remain focused for the whole leg which is something I‟m not normally very good at doing, certainly not for that length of time. It also turned out that there was a few more behind me than in front of me so in some clubs I may even have been given another leg, but I was very happy in the Alty vest, which literally now has blood, sweat, and tears engrained in it. I‟m not going to go as far as Mark did last year. Much thanks to Carole for her organising, and Bob for his driving (don‟t mention the sat nav). Welsh Castles has been one of the surprise bonuses Annette and I have encountered in our time over here, and we‟ll be doing as many as we can while we have the chance. Next year‟s aims: not take the same wrong turns, listen to Bev‟s sat nav; get away from Cardiff early, make sure Alan doesn‟t buy Chinese batteries, get Jeff Norman to run a leg, leave the Middleton girls alone, limit Bob‟s chat up time to an aggregate of an hour;….. “

Welsh Castles Relay

Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th June

Leg 20 „the glory leg‟ run by Andy Norman - “I was not ready for that!”

“Having recently had 7 months out with injury (a stress fracture followed by a torn calf) I reluctantly agreed to come along and run a leg of The Welsh Castles. I hadn‟t raced anything over 5K in distance since a 5 Mile race in Ireland on the 27th August 2015 and nothing over 10K since I pulled out of the Manchester Marathon well over a year ago. Having done the Welsh Castles on 3 previous occasions I knew how much of a fun weekend it was and it didn‟t take much persuasion to get me along to have a go at stage 20 in to Cardiff. This would be my fourth different leg. Maybe I‟ll try them all if I keep going! Being wary of the distance I made sure to tell everyone that they could expect me to be taking it easy on the day.

Well done all Altrincham Welsh Castles team what a good bunch of people you all are. Same time next year - well 10th & 11th June 2017

Turning up at the start line in Caerphilly I went for a short warm up and spotted a runner I didn‟t recognise that looked quite nippy… asking a couple of friends I quickly found out he had recently moved to the UK from North Africa… My mind quite quickly changed from „taking it easy mode‟ to „competitive mode‟. From the gun myself and the African named Tes quickly moved away from the rest of the field. By mile 3 I decided to try and test him early and ran a 5:03 mile… Tes just sat behind me seemingly not under too much strain. Between miles 3 and 7 I repeatedly tried to surge to break away… At this point at 3pm on one of the hottest days of the year it was reaching over 25 degrees and it wasn‟t long before I realised I had completely broken myself! Tes moved away… The last 3 miles seemed like a very long way and I was very relieved to hit the finish line in Cardiff in second place around 45 seconds adrift of Tes, pictured with me here at the finish. After drowning myself in water I very quickly got over the disappointment of not being able to win the stage and as ever vowed to come back next year! Looking forward to Welsh Castle 2017 already. What stage next?”

Birchwood Brook 5K - Friday 3rd June

With this race being held on the weekend of the Welsh Castles Relay there were only three ADAC runners in a small field of 121 finishers. Bev Jackson took the chance to pick up maximum points in her bid to retain her ladies‟ club road running championship title and finished second lady over 50. Alan Williams wasn‟t far behind and he was followed home by Colin Davies who was second man over 65. The race was won by Salford Harriers‟ Christian Prior in 16.08 and the first lady was Alison Russell of host club Spectrum Striders in 20.08.

Bowdon 5K - Thursday 9th June

It was a rather warm and humid evening for the 178 runners who gathered on Green Walk for the start of this two lap race. The race was won in a fairly slow time of 16.02 by Damian Nicholls of Wilmslow Running Club and first lady was Lisa Craig, who improved on her second place at Dunham Massey, in 18.46. Mike Berks was first home for Altrincham in an excellent third place overall whilst Dan Racle was inside the top twenty and first junior, and Dan Martell had another good run. Mark Hunter, Richard Jellyman and another junior, Henry Thompson all finished inside 20 minutes, ahead of Lora Blann, Paul Abraham, Brad Johnson and Peter Waterson. Alan Williams had a good run only 24 hours after picking up gold medals in the javelin and the 200m at the Joe Moran Memorial Veteran Track & Field meeting at Sportcity and he was followed home by Duncan Dickinson. Steph Thompson just managed to get the better of Jane Nicholson and Diane Hunter showed daughter Hannah a clear pair of heels. Dave Attwell and Alan Barlow were the other Altrincham runners in a field of 177 finishers.

Fell Running

2016 Fell Running Championship

A navigational error by Jon Powell towards the end of the Kinder Trog allowed Shaun Jackson to take the 5 points, but it didn‟t stop Jon extending his lead to 27 points in the championship. If Jon is way out on his own at the head of the table, a group of four are separated by just 3 points in the chase for places. Shaun‟s 5 points enabled him to leapfrog John Stockdale but still leaves him behind Ann-Marie and Lockie Campbell, neither of whom competed on Sunday 26th.

Cheshire Track & Field League

Round 2 - Eccles - Saturday 4th June

from Mark Simpson

17 PERSONAL BESTS, BUT UNDER 11 HOLIDAYS

WEAKEN CHESHIRE LEAGUE TEAM AT SALFORD

The two week Trafford schools half term caused big problems for the Cheshire League U11 team at Eccles on 4th June, with the result that the team was, in fact, Lucy Pearce. Fortunately the Pearce and Simpson families and five others ensured that the senior team was somewhat stronger, and an impressive 17 personal bests were achieved on the day.

Under 11

Lucy Pearce dramatically improved her personal bests in all three of her events, marking her impressive progress as an athlete this year.

Under 13

Tessa Pearce won the A and Jade Buckley-Ratcliff the B high jump (I have that phrase saved on the clipboard this season!) Each of them had personal bests in their other 2 events, with Jade currently placed 54th in the national shot put rankings and Tessa 47th in the high jump national rankings. Matilda Kelly won the B shot put, although the absence of her team mate and friendly rival Nya Livingstone presumably caused her not to set a new personal best for once!

Under 15

Jack Bradburn placed himself an amazing 8th in the national rankings with another personal best of 11.5s in the 100m, and also set a new personal best in the shot put. Millie Pearce set new personal bests in all her 3 events, while Emma Simpson and Izzy Miller set new marks in javelin.

Under 17

Without being quite at his best in hard sand, Peter Simpson won the A long jump.

Seniors

Mark Simpson won the B long jump in a personal best, also setting a new mark for 200m. Barry Chapman won the B hammer, and Harriet Pearce set a personal best in 200m as well as running another impressive 3000m. I will not disclose the average age of the overall senior team, but the male component of it was 62!

With U11s hopefully restored, we look forward to the last two matches and hopefully nudging our way

a place or two up the respective league tables.

At the halfway point of the season the senior team remain in 18th place, while despite Lucy Pearce‟s

heroic solo efforts the U11s slip to 17th, although I expect the latter to finish higher with stronger

North of England Track & Field League - Division 4W

Round 2 - Wrexham - Sunday 5th June

from Mark Simpson

LACK OF WOMEN HURTS NORTHERN LEAGUE TEAM AGAIN

Despite 13 personal bests from 30 events, our Northern League team again finished bottom of their second match in a highly competitive Division 4 West. Alison Vesey, now happily recovered from illness, was our sole female representative, although we did manage to field seven men. But with a very tough battle on for both the championship and promotion, that is not enough to be seriously competitive in this league.

Women

Alison‟s one woman team put up a heroic effort, running four races, throwing discus and amassing a total of 20 points.

Men

Top point scorer was again Peter Rice, with 25 points, including 3 second places and a personal best in the high jump. Close behind him on 18 points was Nick Bulger, with 18 points from his four runs, including 2nd place in the 1500m and 2 personal bests. Busiest man of the day was Justin Thompson with 6 events yielding 5 personal bests and 14 points, while Mark Simpson‟s 5 events yielded 13 points and 3 personal bests. Valuable contributions also came from Barry Chapman, Theo Kelly (personal best in the 100m) and Lee Martin (personal best in the triple jump). We are promised a stronger team for the next match at Salford, which would be most welcome!

FOURTH AGAIN FOR NOMADS IN SECOND

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE MATCH

17 athletes turned out for the M60 Nomads in their second league match at Blackburn on 29th May, and again were rewarded with fourth place out of 7. Oldham & Royton (particularly the Hall and Holt families) provided nearly half of the team, and despite our serious shortage of under 17 and under 20 athletes we provided Peter Simpson, who picked up 16 points for second places (both with personal bests) in long jump and triple jump, as well as contributing to second place in the 4 x 100m relay, whilst Joe Fisher picked up 15 points for his two throwing events, as well as acting team manager and field judge Mark Simpson and field judge John Snape. The Nomads remain a vital opportunity for the four clubs‟ older junior athletes to compete at a high

level, and they continue to grasp the opportunity and perform impressively.

8 ATHLETES, 4 MEDALS AND 9 PERSONAL BESTS AT

HIGHLY COMPETITIVE TRAFFORD MEDAL MEETING

If John Snape and I thought 98 long jumpers was a lot at the Mayday Bank Holiday, the late Spring Bank Holiday meeting brought us 104, for 5½ hours of non-stop long jump judging. This reflected a massive entry, and an even more competitive Trafford Medal Meeting than usual. It was therefore greatly to the credit of our 8 athletes that they managed to win 4 medals as well as achieving 9 personal bests. Leading the way, not for the first time, was Jack Bradburn, who won gold in the long jump and silver in the 100m (personal best). Our other medallists were Zak Martin (silver in the 80m hurdles – he also established a new long jump PB) and Jade Buckley-Ratcliff (bronze in discus). Ella Hughes achieved personal bests in the 75m and long jump, Matilda Kelly narrowly missed a medal (by 2cm) with a personal best in shot put and Emma Simpson set a high jump personal best. Not to be outdone, Dan Edmundson ran personal bests in the two sprints and Harry Sinclair followed suit in the 1,500m. These meetings continue to attract very high class as well as large fields, so the results our athletes

achieve are very impressive when put in proper context.

ALTRINCHAM JUNIORS (AND EX-JUNIORS) PROMINENT

AT GREATER MANCHESTER SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS

A very impressive total of nine of our athletes (8 juniors and 1 intermediate) were invited to compete at the Greater Manchester Schools Championships at Trafford on Saturday 11th June (all but one of them for Trafford), of whom eight were able to compete and three qualified for the Mason Trophy inter-counties match on 18th June. Conditions were truly appalling for all events, so anyone who achieved a personal best can be credited with an outstanding performance. Jack Bradburn achieved English Schools standard in finishing second in both heat and final of the 100m, so although eligible for the Mason Trophy he will not need to attend. Lucy Diss matched Jack‟s achievement and positions in the junior girls‟ 100m, posting a personal best in the heat, and will be off to the Mason Trophy along with Zak Martin, who achieved a personal best in coming second in the 80m hurdles, representing his native Oldham. Millie Pearce achieved a personal best in coming fifth in a very strong 1500m, and Jess Richardson massively improved her shot put lifetime mark in coming 6th. Emma Simpson ran in the worst of the weather against very strong opposition in the 800m, whilst brother Peter came 4th in the intermediate triple jump. Jess Grundy was unfortunately unable to record a height in high jump, conditions again being the main contributory factor. Also invited to attend but unavailable due to holidays was Isobel Miller (200m). Two other athletes who competed for us until this season also qualified: Chayce Smith (who still trains with Howard Tarry, like Jack, Lucy and Zak) achieving English Schools standard in coming second in the intermediate girls‟ 300m, and Harry Briscoe coming second in the intermediate boys‟ 200m. So our athletes continue to improve by leaps and bounds and are starting to enjoy the representative

selection recognition that comes with high performance. With 7 of our Lower Age Youth Development

League team selected, 4 of them in their lower year, it is easy to see why our performances in that

competition have taken such a recent upturn. We are a very fortunate and proud club to have so

many young athletes of such quality, with others in the younger age groups who show promise of

being well worthy to follow in their footsteps.

PROMOTION ACHIEVED WITH A MATCH TO

SPARE IN YOUTH DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE

Yet another brilliant performance from our young athletes, at Warrington on Sunday 19th June, resulted in a second successive match win, and in winning promotion with a match to spare (as long as we turn up for the last match). A reasonable second place finish in the last match at Colwyn Bay on Saturday 16th July would secure the championship of Division North West 4, which would be just reward for the team‟s sterling efforts this season. Another 43 personal bests, 4 club records and 31 event wins (16 A and 15 B) were the highlights of another dominant performance from a team that has grown in confidence and experience as the season has progressed. These athletes, the vast majority of whom will be in the same age group next year, will in my view be well up to the challenge of competing in a higher division next year.

Under 13 boys

Josh Wilson‟s fairy tale start to his YDL career continued with 28 points, including wins in the A long jump (personal best) and high jump. The ultra-consistent Oskar Richardson clocked up 26 points, winning the A javelin and shot put. Ben Lomas and Callum O‟Reilly each achieved two personal bests and collected 20 and 18 points respectively (Ben doing great work in very competitive events and Callum winning the B javelin), and then teamed up with Josh and Oskar to come second in the 4 x 100m relay. The 4-strong team collected an amazing 100 points for under 13 boys‟ events.

Under 13 girls

Tessa Pearce equalled the club record with a staggering 1.43m in the high jump (personal best - now better than older sister Millie!), also winning the 1200m in a personal best and achieving a PB „hat-trick‟ in the 150m on her way to 26 points, a total matched by Jade Buckley-Ratcliff who won the shot put and the B high jump. Matilda Kelly won the B shot put and javelin (personal best) for 16 points, a total equalled by Katie Hewett, who rose from her sick bed for three hugely competitive events on the track. Hannah Gregg won the B 1200m in a personal best on her way to 11 points from her two events, which was matched by Ysabella Barnes on debut after recovery from a broken toe, with a personal best in long jump. Our other under 13 girl debutant, Daisy Ainsworth, collected 9 points from two very competitive events, picking up a personal best in the 150m. Tessa, Jade, Daisy and Ysabella then combined for second place in the 4 x 100m relay, to complete an impressive haul of 123 points for this element of the team.

Under 15 boys

One of two outstanding performances from long standing YDL competitors, now enjoying some success after a few frustrating years, came from Jack Bradburn, fresh from winning the Mason Trophy 100m 24 hours earlier. Jack won all his 3 events (100m, 200m and long jump) with a personal best in long jump and a club record in 200m, which his team manager had finally persuaded him to run (he is, after all, the Greater Manchester county champion at that distance!) Oliver Lau racked up 26 points and three personal bests in his three throws, with a win in javelin his personal highlight, while Zak Martin also returned from Mason Trophy action to achieve 24 points, winning the 80m hurdles and B long jump, both in personal bests. Ollie Jones made a startlingly impressive debut, winning his three B throwing events to match Zak‟s points total. Fellow debutant Olly Huggon also impressed with 18 points in his 2 events, winning the A hammer and the B 800m. Oliver Nicholson contributed 16 points, winning the B javelin, while Harley Geraghty (two personal

bests) and Dan Edmundson (personal best in the 300m) each chipped in 12 points from two very

competitive track events. Harry Sinclair bravely ran through injury in the 4 x 100m relay to contribute

to a second place finish, a result matched by the 4 x 300m team.

Particular credit goes to Dan Edmundson, who ran both relays, and thus contributed to a 16 point

haul from those events. This element of the team collected an awesome 178 points.

Under 15 girls

The other outstanding performance from our long standing competitors came from Emma Simpson, who achieved something I cannot recall one of our athletes doing before (although I do have a bad memory!) in winning her three A events (hammer and javelin in personal bests and long jump) and being in a winning relay team. Another experienced YDL athlete who recalls the lean times, Izzy Miller, clocked up an impressive 26 points, beating her own 300m club record again in winning that event. Millie Pearce achieved 24 points from a hat trick of second place finishes (personal bests in 1500m and discus) while Lucy Potter did the same thing in a different way by winning three B events (discus, hammer and high jump), all in personal bests. Also above the 20 point mark was Halle Thompson, winning both the B javelin (personal best) and the B shot put, whilst also chalking up a personal best in the 800m. Courteney Disley collected an impressive 18 points from a hat-trick of second place B finishes in

three very competitive events, whilst Lucy Diss came second in the 100m and ran a personal best

in the B 300m.

Lucy‟s main contribution, though, was in running both relays, teaming up with Millie, Emma and

Isobel to smash their own club record in winning the 4 x 300m, and also contributing to a strong

second place in the 4 x 100m. Overall the under 15 girls almost matched the boys with 174 points.

Match Result League Table after 3 of 4 Matches

I long ago ran out of superlatives for this team, which has come from nowhere this season to dominate its division (at least so far). Its achievements are all the more striking when you consider that we only effectively have around 35 eligible member athletes to select from, of whom 30 have appeared for us so far this season, 27 of them in this match. The team is a wonderful balance of a number of outstanding athletes (I will not name them – you can read the results) and a greater number of athletes who faithfully turn up and do the events that suit the team rather than themselves, regularly contributing huge numbers of points to the team both through individual events and relays, as well as steadily improving as a result of the experience. They are the ones who have made the key difference to the team‟s performances this season. The „stars‟ would be the first ones to say that this team could not have achieved this season‟s success without the rest of the team – they know that because a number of them are in their third and fourth year of doing YDL, and have experienced the lean times that came through lack of strength in depth in the past. And I should say that even the most talented athletes in this team are prepared to „get their hands dirty‟ and do different events to suit the team‟s requirements. And possibly the best thing about this team is that the vast majority of them will be in the same age

groups next year, which may well mean that the team is even stronger, provided we can find a few

more boys!

NOMADS ACHIEVE IMPRESSIVE SECOND PLACE IN

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE UPPER AGE GROUP MATCH 3

An unprecedented 20 athletes appeared for the M60 Nomads in their latest match at Oldham on

Sunday 26th June, although satisfaction with the 2nd place finish from an Altrincham perspective

was tempered by the fact that we contributed only one athlete, although Peter Simpson did the club

proud with a personal best and 1st place finish in the triple jump, placing him at 121 in the national

rankings for the event. This result moves the Nomads into third place in Division North West 2,

although a glance at the table suggests that West Cheshire and Border will not be caught with

only one match to go, so promotion is likely to be beyond us. Next year though ………

VETERANS PILE UP THE MEDALS AT JOE MORAN MEMORIAL OPEN

From 27 events, 11 golds, 11 silvers and 4 bronzes (yes that‟s 26 medals) were won by the six Altrincham athletes, who achieved 15 personal bests, at the massively well-attended Joe Moran Memorial Open on 8th June at Sport City.

Veteran 70

The evergreen Barry Chapman won 4 gold medals (including PBs in shot putt and javelin), a silver and a bronze to be (just) our most successful athlete on the night.

Veteran 65

John Snape won 2 golds and a silver medal.

Veteran 55

Alan Williams ran Barry close with 3 golds and 2 silvers, and personal bests in all of his 5 events.

Veteran 50

Perpetual „bridesmaid‟ Mark Simpson won 4 silver medals, with personal bests in long jump and javelin, and looks forward to being a V55 next year.

Veteran 45

Justin Thompson won a gold, two silvers and a bronze, while Lee Martin won a gold, a silver and two bronzes, with personal bests in all his 5 events, missing out on an Altrincham medals clean sweep by only 0.1 of a second in the 100m. Unfortunately all the old people were kept up way past their (early) bedtimes by the wait for field event results, which in the case of shot put was literally interminable, as Manchester Harriers had to shut up shop before the results were available – the recorders I think were overwhelmed by sheer force of numbers, and victims of the event‟s huge success. Still, it was great fun, and very lucrative indeed in terms of a medal haul. We veterans can still give these youngsters a run for their money………

Alan Williams proudly displays his medals

Junior News

Two of our three athletes who qualified for the Mason Trophy Inter Counties Schools match in Birmingham on Saturday 18th June were able to compete, with Jack Bradburn producing a brilliant win in the U15 100m in a time of 11.59s, a tremendous achievement at such a prestigious and strongly-contested event. Zak Martin was our other representative, coming 13th in the 80m hurdles with a personal best time of 13.21s. Next step for Jack is the English Schools championships at Gateshead on 8th & 9th July, and we wish him the best of luck in this extremely high quality event. Lucy Diss, who had qualified for the U15 100m, was unfortunately unable to attend this event,

which in no way diminishes her achievement in qualifying for it.

ADAC MEMBERSHIP FEES & ENGLAND ATHLETICS AFFILIATION

There have been recent changes regarding compulsory athlete registration held under UKA Rules.

While athlete registration has been a part of the rules of the sport for a number of years these changes mean it is essential that athletes are registered and aware of their registration details. While road runners will still be able to compete unattached, athletes, who wish to represent their club (and claim the registered athlete discount on entry fees) in all events including road running, will need to be registered.

Club membership fees are now due. You will be registered with EA on receipt of your fees which include England Athletics registration fee of £13.

Club fees for 2016/17 are:

Adults £45 Junior and students in full time education £25 Senior citizens £25 Social members £20 Second claim £10 1 Adult & 1 Junior £65 1 Adult & 2 Juniors £85 1 Adult & 3 Juniors £105 2 Adults & 1 Junior £110 2 Adults & 2 Juniors £130 2 Adults & 3 Juniors £150

Preferred method of payment is online bank transfer; account number is 33466590 sort code20-01-96.
