PawPrints Magazine's Dog Cover Model Winner

My name is Sebastian and I am so proud to have been

chosen to be this year’s cover

model. I would like to thank all the little people who made this

possible. I would like to start with my new family

and the two little girls, Isabella and

Sophia, who make me feel

special each and every day. I’d like to thank their mother who makes me the tastiest meals, I don't

know why everyone else complains about her cooking, I think she is great. I want to give a special

thank you to the Saint Bernard Rescue group headed up by Heather Crawford. She treated me like her own but never gave up hope that the right family

would come along and make me a part of a family I could call my own. After spending my whole life in a

foster home or rescue, I now really know what it means to love, be loved back and to have a purpose. I would like to thank PawPrints for reading my story and thinking I was special. I would also like to thank the big man upstairs for all of our blessings and who makes stories like this possible. Most of all, I would

like to tell all of my other comrades who are still looking for a family of their own, that great things can happen when people open their hearts to pets like us

who have so much love to give.

LOST DOG "Mango" - Male White Poodle

.

Disappeared from Long Creek area (across street from Long Creek School) in Pender County

Mango is greatly loved and desperately missed!

He is the only family left to an 80-year-old Wilmington woman. He was under the temporary care of a friend when he disappeared on December 22, 2010. Mango is a miniature white poodle, about 7 pounds. He is a house dog and a lap dog. He loves his home

and his human momma and is shy around strangers. Please help reunite him with his mother! She is deeply grieving his loss.

A reward will be paid and no questions asked for his safe return. Please indicate a time and place to pick him up.

If you have any info about 'Mango', please call 910-791-4239.

I’m as cuddly as a teddy bear - and I look like one, too! My name is Dixie (A037984) and I’m a 6-year-old Australian Shep-herd mix girl who melts hearts with my gentle, affec-tionate personal-

ity. I have no tail - just a cute little bottom that wiggles when I’m happy. I

adore being with people and can’t get enough hugs

and kisses. When I’m laying down, I’ll turn on my side and look up at you invitingly, hop-

ing for a belly rub. How can anyone resist? I walk very well on a leash and enjoy munching on dog cookies. I’m hoping to find a home where I can snuggle with my family members, watch TV, and sleep peacefully, knowing that my future is safe and secure. Please hurry to Brunswick County Animal Control and adopt me! For driving direc-

tions, or more information, please call 910-754-8204.

I am sponsored by Adam’s Folly Pet Boarding, Bolivia, NC. Thank you!

I'm Gracie and if you're looking for a small cat, I'm your girl. I'm

almost 1-year-old and weigh just 6 pounds.

I'm a very pretty, light

gray Tabby (if I do say so myself). I'm up to date on

my vaccinations, I’m spayed and I tested negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia. I'm a very loving, playful kitty, I en-joy the company of men and women and I get along with other cats and dogs. I'm an active girl who loves to play with my toys, I like to climb up on the chest or neck of my

foster parents for awhile and then I'm off to play some more. Never a dull moment with me around! How about

it? Don't you want to adopt a fun, cute kitty like me? Please call Pet Friends of Duplin County at 910-271-3101

to get more information.

I am sponsored in appreciation of everyone who has rescued a homeless animal. Thank you!

Hello, my name is Abe (Mac's

Abraham in the racing world). I am a very good looking 2-year-old. I love to run, but didn't care much for racing so they decided that I needed to go to a

loving home. I am an average size

for a Greyhound, and just look at me,

muscles every-where! I love to run in the yard at the kennel and play with the other guys in my group. I sure would be happy to find someone who will give me a wonderful place to call home. I promise you won't be sorry, as I am so ready to give hugs and kisses to my new family. I hope you will be interested in me, but if not, you can view other Greyhounds looking for good homes at www.greyhoundfriends.com. Please

contact Barbara at 910-540-9644 for more information on adopting me or one of my friends.

I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance

Agency in honor of Luna.

My name is Recess and I

was dumped in the K-2 play-ground at Bo-

livia Elementary School. Yup, you heard it right, they

dropped me into the play-

ground and left me there. Just in case I some-

how got in there on my

own, ads were run looking for

my owner, but no one claimed me. I am now neutered but I did test positive for heartworms, so I will be undergoing

heartworm treatment very soon. If you would like to donate toward my vet bills, you can do so online at

www.adoptanangel.net or you can mail tax-deductible donations to Adopt-An-ANGEL at P.O. Box 15095, Wil-mington, NC 28408. I am one of those very loving dogs

who leans into you for love and I melt when you touch me. I am very attached to my people so it would be great if I

went to a home where someone is home a lot. Also, I like dogs so that would be cool, too. If you would like to know more about me or would like to inquire about adoption, call

Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557.

I am sponsored by the Miss Avis Davis Fund, thanks!

URGENT, URGENT! I’m Running Out

of Time! I’m smiling for my photo in the hope that someone will see the friendly companion that

they’ve been searching for! My

name is Roxy (CF3492) and I’ve been at the shel-

ter for several months now.

Time is running out and it’s just not fair! I’m an

8-year-old girl who deserves to be surrounded by a loving family, not the cold

walls of a kennel. I was once part of a loving home but my owner lost his job and I was forced to come here. I’m quite bewildered and confused about my situation. I’m

already spayed (yay!) and most likely house-trained. I get along great with people, but would prefer to be the only dog in the household. I’m a golden-haired Lab mix who desperately needs someone today! Please call Pender

County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196. They’ll be happy to give you driving

directions or tell you even more.

I am sponsored by Kathy Lanio. Thank you!

THANK YOU!!! 2010 was a RECORD YEAR!

The numbers are in…

804 cats were spayed or neutered in 2010! YOUR support and YOUR donations

made this possible. We thank you with very

grateful hearts!

Our mission isn't over, however. There are still cats dying in the streets, needing care

and support. With your help, 2011 could be another record year!

Please send your tax-deductible donations to:

Friends of Felines P.O. Box 475, Castle Hayne, NC 28429

For more information, visit www.friendsofelines.org or

call 910-452-6721 Check us out on Facebook, too!

Can you tell that I’m posing for the camera? I’m Buster

and my enthusiasm to be loved is wonderful! My man-ners and training make me very easy to have around. I love to snuggle on the sofa, but not until invited. I have

no problems with other dogs and have adjusted well to my foster home. I am very hand-some and move well, but I’m

not looking to run off if the gate is open. My happiness and joy in life is very appar-ent by the "tap dancing" of my tall Schnauzer legs and the "woof-woof-crow" I greet you with. I am neutered, up to date on shots, heartworm negative, and appear to be one of those lucky dogs blessed with great health. I am so very intelligent and work to please my family in every

way possible. I’m house-trained, crate-trained, and micro-chipped. I’m sweet, calm, well-mannered, and basically just go with the flow. I will get along very well with other

animals in the family. I’ve never been around cats, but I’m a gentle boy so no problems are anticipated. To adopt

me, visit www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org. There you can fill out an application online and view other adopt-able rescues. If you need an application mailed or faxed,

call 910-264-8300.

I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance Agency in honor of Molly.

My name is Riley and I recently celebrated

my first birthday. I am a 60 pound, Chocolate

Lab mix and I don't remember where I was born or where I lived

during my puppy-hood. Several months ago a lady rescued me

but she is too old to play with me and she

doesn't have any other animals for me to play with either. I LOVE the play dates she makes

for me but I would really like it if she

would send me to a home with another dog who wants a playmate everyday and has a fenced yard for us to run. I am really quite polite indoors. I am crate-trained, only

chew my own stuff, and let my lady know when I have to go outside. I won most improved puppy at the obedience

classes I went to and I learned how to walk nicely on a leash, sit, lay down and even stay still for quite a while. I like fetching anything and I can put a ball right in your lap! I have all my shots, I’m on heartworm preventa-

tive and I am spayed. I get along well with dogs and peo-ple but I may be too playful for little humans. All I need to be happy is a home with someone else like me and a yard

we can play in. If your dog told you he/she's lonely and wants a playmate - well HERE I AM! Just call 910-200-5660 and tell them your dog is looking to adopt a friend.

Hi, my name is Peaches! You can’t tell by my smiling face, but my earlier life was a sad one. I was kept out-side all the time and gave birth to litter after litter of puppies. But all that has changed! My new friends at the shelter say I’ll soon

be someone’s faithful com-panion and, with my spay

surgery complete, I’ll never have to worry about pup-pies again. I’m an 8-year-old, friendly and loving Golden Retriever mix. All I want is some TLC and a nice place to live. I lived in a foster home

for a while and am fully house-trained. I discovered air conditioning is a wonderful invention! I’m also vaccinated

and on heartworm prevention. I’m not asking for much, just kindness and good care. I’ll give you lots of love in return.

Please call Paw’s Place at 910-845-7297 and let’s get started on our new life together!

I am sponsored by Marybeth and Elliott Tepper in

loving honor of Tripp (who was adopted from Paw’s Place). We love him so much!

A darling boy like me should be living with a family! When will it be

my turn to be loved? My name is Cole and I’m a

very affectionate boy who can’t get enough

cuddles and kisses. My 1-year-old birthday hap-pens in April, so please adopt me and let me do my celebrating with my

new family! I am already neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. I play

beautifully with the other cats at the shelter and

enjoy meeting every new person who walks in the door. We’re in a cage-less environment so you can pick me up

or watch me interact with the others. I’ll show you why I’m the one you should be bringing home today! Please call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022 and

let’s get started on our brand new life.

I am sponsored by Adair Douglass and Channell. Thank you!

►I’m Ruka, a happy, laid back, Black Lab mix who is looking for that special someone in my life. I was an owner turn in and ran out of time. I’m very loyal and personable. I’m extremely engaging and want to make you just

as happy as I am. I am young at only around 2-years and already house-

trained, crate-trained, and I know sit, stay, lay down, and no. I love my peo-

ple and do OK with other dogs, but should be an only pet. I am protective

and will alert you when someone is at the door or in the driveway. Once I see it's a person, my tail will wag so fast it hurts when I hit you with it! I LOVE car rides and getting baths. I do well on a leash and would make someone a

great exercising partner. I could truly fit in anywhere! Since I’m laid back, I will do just fine in an apartment or

small home with no fenced yard, or I would make a great, active family addition.

►My name is Shelby and I’m wonderful. I’m a balanced dog,

well-rounded, laid back and easy. I’m house-trained,

spayed, vaccinated and heart-worm negative. I am 1-year-old

and was one of the puppies who got returned as an adult

because my owner moved and took a job with long hours. I am

fantastic and get along well with other animals. I’m so very, very sweet.

◄My name is Brownie and I am a very sweet boy. I am

eager to please, overly friendly and can be energetic at times. I am very pretty with my brown undercoat. I do well with some

dogs and may be a little too energetic for others, so it's

best for me to meet your dog to see if we get along or not. I am neutered, vaccinated and

tested positive for heartworms. I will be undergoing treatment and there will be no additional

costs to my adopter for the treatment - unless you want to donate to help me. Adopt-An-ANGEL is accepting dona-tions on my behalf at P.O. Box 15095, Wilmington, NC

28408. I am homeless after running out of time at the lo-cal animal shelter.

◄My name is Katie and I am a humongous black

and white kitty! I lost my home when my owners were delivered a huge

medical bill they could not pay. I lost my home as a result. I am sponsored by

the New Hanover Re-gional Medical Center

Laboratory. I am grateful to them for their donation to Adopt-An-ANGEL. When a foster home became available Adopt-An-ANGEL took me in. I am spayed, vaccinated and very,

very sweet. I am shy, but very loving to you once you spend a little time with me. I am very good with cats and older kids.

Visit me at Petco every Saturday and Sunday from 11-5.

◄Hello there! My name is Rockster ("Rock") but don't let the name fool you, I'm sweet as

sugar. I came from Pender County Animal Control where I sat homeless for months, and then when they had a failing septic system, I HAD to go.

Luckily, I found a foster home that cares for me and is teaching me the rights and wrongs of the house. I am doing so well and I am now ready for a home. I am

100% crate-trained and have very good manners. I am excel-lent on the leash and don't pull

at all. I also love dogs! My family doesn't have any cats so they don't know how I will be with them. I do have a very calm and gentle nature and can't wait to find a permanent home to settle down in. I am already neutered, up to date

on shots, and heartworm negative.

◄My name is Marley and I am fantastic! I am a middle aged boy who still thinks he is a puppy! If you can't tell by my picture, I am

addicted to my tennis ball. It's like my pacifier, but I quickly drop it at

your feet so you can throw it again. I am what you call a fetch-a-holic and I am so fun! I do well

with other animals (I lived with another dog) and kids. I am a

little hefty so a diet wouldn't be a bad idea. I am house-trained,

quiet, and so alert and eager to please. I walk well on a leash, I am neutered and I tested negative for heartworms. I am homeless because my owner has gone into hospice.

A lot of people at the shelter fell in love with me and worked very hard for me to go in to rescue instead of being put

down. I have a lot of strikes against me…I’m middle aged, I’m black with some grey on my muzzle and I’m chubby - all of which made me very unlikely to get adopted straight from Animal Control. Special thanks to Abby and Tiffany Pickler

Rice for paying my adoption fee out of Animal Control.

Page 10: PawPrints Magazine April 2011

Hi, my name is Charlotte. I have been

caught in a web of puppy mak-ing and neglect

for years. I thought my

worst day was when I was

dumped on the street. But it was my best

day because I was rescued by Carolina Basset Hound Rescue (CBHR). Right now I am very skinny and in need of some meat on

my bonz. I also have 'Cherry eye' but these kind folks here at CBHR and the Dr's who work with them are gonna fix me right up. My foster family has been very hospitable.

I get 3 square meals every day! Who knew? It's like a never ending buffet...isn't it! I am being treated like a prin-

cess here. I never knew a life like this existed. I was a little shy and timid at first, but I am slowly coming out of

that web I was caught in. I am a middle-aged, sweet and laid back girl. I know I am safe now. I realize now that there are loving people in the world. Are you that loving family for me? If you'd like to meet me, or find out more

about me, please call 919-708-4247 or visit our website at www.cbhr.com.

I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange

in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you!

URGENT, URGENT!!! I’m Running Out of

Time!

How can this be? Doesn’t someone need a handsome man in their life?

My name is Dallas (CM3398) and I could

be the man of your dreams! I’m an Ameri-can Bulldog mix who

has been living at Pender County Animal Control’s animal shel-ter since February 9. That’s a long time to

be without a family to love. Why haven’t I been snapped up? Just take a look at my photo - I’m such a heartbreaker! If you ask me to sit, I’ll gladly do it. Then I’ll tilt my head to the side and gaze up at you so adorably. I walk well on a

leash and am friendly to other dogs. My new home should be free of felines, though - I have a tendency to chase

them. I’m so happy to meet new people and have a social, happy nature. Please give me a chance at a future with you! To find out more about me, or for driving directions,

please call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196.

I am sponsored by Kathy Lanio. Thank you!

◄Yellow Labs make perfect family additions. Come meet me and I’ll

prove it to you! Hi, my name is Chuck

(A038526) and I’m an 8-month-old boy with a

relaxed, friendly and loving personality. I

know how to sit and lay down for treats, and when I’ve earned my

reward, I’ll lay with the cookie between my front paws and nibble away. It’s so cute! My sweet brown eyes melt every-

one’s heart. Please give me a chance to melt yours!

◄I’m just popping in to say, “Please

adopt me!” My name is Roscoe (A037854)and I’m a fun, friendly boy. When they took me in the playroom, the first thing I did was pick up a rope

toy and carry it around. They said I was adorable! I’m a 1-year-old red-gold Lab/Shepherd mix, already neutered,

who loves people and can’t get enough

huggin’ or kissin’. I carry dog cookies in

my mouth, too. Come meet me and see how cute I am!

◄I’m a stunning young girl with a very loving personality! My name is Jetta (A038480) and I have the silkiest black fur. Around my neck and chest is a glorious silver mane that you’ll want to sink your fingers into! When my cage is opened, I want noth-ing more than to come out and receive attention. My owner moved away so I’m starved for human affection. At just 1½-years old, I’m al-ready spayed, too! Let’s go!

◄I know ‘sit’, ‘shake’ and ‘down’ and can give the sweetest kisses! I’m Daisey (A038151), a 2-year-old black and tan German Shepherd mix who would be a wonderful family dog. Check out my photo - this is what I look like when I’m sitting on command. I have a very friendly and social person-ality and I love to be talked to and given attention. My owners moved away so I’m ready to be your girl!

►Vince (A037884) is my name and stealing

hearts is my game! I’m a petite boy, fully grown at 2-years-old

and weighing no more than 35 pounds. (I’m sort of like a miniature Yellow Lab.) No one can stay sad or som-ber in my presence. I’m all about spread-ing love and having a

good time. I love playing with toys but

I’m also happy to focus on your needs, too. When you say ‘sit’, I’ll plop my bot-tom down and stare up at you, just like I’m doing in my photo. I really enjoy getting attention from humans and

will happily sit by your side while you give my body a nice massage. If an adorable little sidekick is the friend you’ve

been looking for, come on out and visit with me!

►I’m just yearning to be someone’s best friend and companion! My

name is Sugar (A038278) and I was

once a family member, but my owner went

through hard times and could no longer afford to keep me. I am already neutered and litterbox-

trained, and am a young boy at only 4-years-old. To say I am loving is an understatement - I am

so happy to be touched and will rub my face

against your fingers and cheek. Please adopt me!

Here I am at a Paw’s Place adoption fair, waiting for my new family to find me. I be-

have so beauti-fully in public

and would be a great compan-ion for anyone!

My name is Skittles and

I’m a 35 pound Hound girl who just turned 1-year-old at the end of March. I wish I could have celebrated my birthday in my new

home! Still, I have high hopes that I’ll soon find the family of my dreams. I am a house-trained darling who lost my former home because a new baby was coming and there was no time for me. I’m great with cats and other dogs, but would probably be happi-est as the only dog since I can be protective of my food. If you’d like to see what a wonderful, loving boy I am, please call Paw’s

Place at 910-845-7297 and let’s arrange a day to meet!

I am sponsored by Marybeth and Elliott Tepper in loving memory of Charleston and Scarlet, who loved all their sisters

and brothers. We all miss you so much.

Hi, my name is Fletcher! I am a Walker Hound dog

who has been neu-tered and

vaccinated. I am great with people and with other animals. I am not a

barker and have been

trained on an invisible

fence. I am house-trained

for indoor-living and

enjoy playing outdoors as

well. I am an all-around gentle soul with a great personality. If you’d like to meet me, please call

Renée at 910-512-2541 or 910-686-8537.

CAT: Cat Adoption Team

◄A loving, long-haired, friendly boy is waiting to be yours! My name is Beedee and everyone

tells me I’m simply wonderful. I love to be

brushed and I love attention. And at just 11-months-old, I have a lifetime of joy and

happiness to give you. My nickname is Pretty Boy (because I’m so handsome, naturally)

and I enjoy playing with cat toys. I’m already

neutered, up to date on shots and litterbox-

trained. I just love being with people and am a perfect companion for kids, dogs and other cats. Come get me!

◄My elderly owner could not keep me because she went into a

nursing home. I’m a bit

confused right now because I was given so

much love and attention in my former

home. I’m so happy when someone reaches in my cage and pets me - I butt my head against their head in

happiness. My name is Maggie and I’m a 3-year-old girl who is spayed, vaccinated, litterbox-trained and praying to

be loved again. Would you please come get me?

►When will it be my turn to go home? My name is

Moonbeam and I’m a 15-month-old girl who

was rescued as a stray with my mom, Galaxy, and brother, Sunbeam.

My family has found loving homes, but I’m

been in a foster home for over a year now! I’m a

gentle, sweet and loving girl who wants nothing more than to be loved

and given attention. I’m already spayed,

vaccinated and litterbox-trained and I get along great with children, cats, and dogs.

◄My name is Cinderella and, just like the fairy tale

princess, I’m hoping someone will change my life. I don’t need a fairy

godmother, but I do need you! If you’re looking for a cat who enjoys being

held and will not struggle to get down, I’m your girl! I am so happy to be held in someone’s arms and I

possess a sweet and loving personality. I am friendly to other cats and dogs and get along well with children. I’m just

1-year-old, spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained, too!

►I’m a gentle, loving Lap Cat named Willie. Has your lap

been empty for far too long?

Adopt me and I’ll keep you warm and

happy for a lifetime! I’m a 1½-year-old boy who is already neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. And

here’s even more good news: I get along just fine with men, women, kids, dogs and cats. That just about covers it,

doesn’t it? Let’s get started on our new life today!

◄Hey there, my name is Mandy! I’m a playful, friendly girl. In my photo, I am staring at a peacock feather, getting ready to jump for it! I love to interact with people and to be kissed and rubbed. I’m already spayed, up to date on shots and excellent in the litterbox. I’d be a great friend to those tiny humans called children and I also play well with other cats. At 9-months of age, I’m ready to give you all the love I have!

Hello! My name is Gracie, and I am looking for a family

to love. For eight years I lived with a great family, but when their house burned down I was stuck living outside.

Saint Bernards are really into being close to their people,

and just hanging out in good company, so I was scared and lonely. Could I come live with

you? I am healthy, house-trained and love to cuddle.

Although I am a "senior" dog at 9-years-old, I am playful

and energetic - for a Saint Bernard. I like to go for walks, and with my Gentle Leader collar I am very well-behaved on a leash. I like to play with squeaky toys and

take naps on your feet. At 90 pounds I am small for a Saint Bernard, but I have a big heart and want to share it with you. If you are interested in taking me home, email [email protected] or call 910-547-4823.

I am sponsored by WhatsOnWilmington.com in honor

of Kizzy Totten, the elder stateswoman of rescued Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Thank you!

I’m a wonderful family dog named Bella! Look at my photo and you will see how well-behaved and obedient I

am. All they did was hold up a treat, say ‘sit’, and I sat right down with no hesita-

tion. I’m a 2-year-old Boxer/Bulldog mix who was found at Animal Control with my

nine puppies. They have all been adopted so I’m ready

to find a home where it’s my turn to be the baby. I love

everyone and never meet a stranger. I’m also house-

trained, leash-trained and great with children and other dogs. I’m sweet, gentle, calm and just an all-around terrific girl. I hope someone (preferably with a fenced-in yard) will recognize what a jewel they would have in me. Please call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022. I can’t

wait to get started on our new life together!

I am sponsored by George, Brenda and John Harriss in loving memory of Miss Scarlett, Rosie Belle, Candy

and Lady, special friends, all.

►They say Patience is a virtue. I say it’s just my name - but I do have a lot of patience. You see, I was recently returned after a couple of years in a home. I’m

just 4½-years-old and now I have to live up to my name while I wait

for that special home again. I have the most beautiful round

face, similar to a China doll. And what a wonderful color, a cream

Tabby. I’m not always crazy about getting into a carrier, but we all have our quirks. I

think you can live with that one, I know I can.

►She looks like an Angel, walks like an Angel, she’s an Angel to me. That could be our song. I am a beautiful calico point Siamese mix.

My daughter found a wonder-ful home, but my first home didn’t work out. It was very sad. So here I am, looking again. I am a very sweet,

3-year-old young lady. I can get along with other cats if you give me some time to adjust.

If you want a real “looker” come visit and take me home. Everyone will be impressed by your beautiful cat.

◄Calicos are the most popular cats so why am I still waiting for a home? My name is Shana and I’m a 2-year-old female pastel Calico Tabby. I am one of the most unusually colored kitties you’ll ever see and I’m even prettier in person. I can be a little timid around other cats, but every day I get better. If you give me a chance, you won’t be disappointed.

◄After several years of wait-ing, Pacino, my brother, finally found a home, so now it is my turn. My name is Brando. I live at the Calabash Art Gal-

lery in Shallotte, which is pretty great. As an added

bonus, I’m an art connoisseur. I’ve had lots of experience

evaluating art as I wait for a home. I am a 5-year-old male,

lonely kitty, hoping for the best. My name should be Monet or Manet. Feel free to change it when you get me home.

◄Are you lookin’ for that special kitty? Well look no fur-

ther, because I am your answer, Nubbin. Granted it’s not the best name, and in fact it’s a bit conde-scending, as I am missing a leg. I deserve a better name after what I’ve been through. I am an 18-

month-old, male brown and white Tabby with one leg amputated. Someone found me in the

streets and my leg had been severed and was just hanging. After a little surgery, as you can see, I am ready to go!

Three-legged race, here I come!

◄I hope this picture shows how beautiful I am. I tried my best. My name is Pessa and I’m a friendly and affectionate 3-year-old girl. My life started

a little rough as someone dumped me in a feral colony.

Then, when I was getting fixed, they clipped my ear

before they determined I was a sweet pea! So now I am

ready for a new chapter in my life to get started. Let me spend many years making you

as happy as I was the day I was rescued.

◄Sometimes life just takes a great turn, and mine did.

Someone found me wander-ing around, lost and alone.

They took me home, had me spayed and checked out and

now I am ready to find a home. I can’t believe in

these economic hard times someone still cared enough to help out a stranger! My

name is Polly and I am about 1½-years-old. You know the other great thing about me? I get along with other cats, quite a feat for a Calico. We usually are so demanding!

◄I have been waiting almost 4-years for some-one to realize I am spe-cial and take me home.

My name is Joanie and I love everyone. I have

been at Cat Tails since I was just 3-weeks-old!

Please do feel sorry for me, someone please! My

birthday is March 20, and it would be great to spend it at my new home.

Page 16: PawPrints Magazine April 2011

Hi there, my name is Uno! I was found running

down a busy street in Burgaw. A kind couple came to my rescue and now I’m

waiting for a per-manent, loving home. I’m a

female American Staffordshire

Terrier mix, just 3-years-old. My personality could best be described

as friendly and fun-loving. I am spayed, vacci-nated, house-

trained and leash-trained. I love to be petted and enjoy playing tug-of-war with my rope toys. Pender County Hu-mane Society wants me to go to the best home possible, so you must be experienced with handling my breed. A fenced-in yard is also a necessity. I’m not a big fan of

cats, but I play just fine with other dogs as long as I’m in-troduced slowly. Since I’m a playful, active girl, I would do best in a home with adults-only or older children, not tiny ones. If you think we could be a match, call the shelter at

910-259-7022. I’ll get my rope toy ready for your visit!

I am sponsored by Pine Valley Animal Hospital in loving memory of Nala Lem and Buddy Prescott.

I’m a happy, cuddly boy named Wilson! At just 10-months-old, I’m a 36 pound Beagle mix with a

face that was made for kissing. I’m used to living inside with my family, but I also love to play outdoors and would be excited to have my very own fenced-in yard. I get along just great with other dogs - in fact, my brother, Charlie Brown, is also at the shelter looking for a home. You can see

his photo on page 19. Our owner moved away and brought us here. It’s sad,

yes, but I’m looking forward to the future with you! As you can see from my photo, I know how to sit on command -

they didn’t even have to ask me twice. I love delicious dog treats and receiving attention from humans. If you’d like to

say hello to me in person, please call the New Hanover Humane Society at 910-763-6692. They can tell you more

about the adoption process and answer any other ques-tions about me!

Sponsored in memory of our last feline companion

◄It’s a shame that a super nice girl like me is homeless. I’m the ideal companion, the bestest friend you could ever

want and I’ve perfected the meaning of loyalty.

My name is Bambi (A249099) and I’m a

spayed, 2-year-old Lab mix. I know several commands: sit, paw, stay and no. I take

treats gently from your fingers and I’m good on a leash. Heck, I’m even

house-trained! I’m a social dog who likes meeting new people and I’m good

with other dogs. I’m eager to please and will gently nuzzle my nose into your hand to be petted. Please love me.

►Are you looking for a feline buddy who isn’t shy about

being handled or who doesn’t mind being held? My name is Dorian Gray (A252119) and I would love to meet you. I’m a

10-month-old girl who was found as a stray. I’m very

social and not one bit aloof. I’m silly, goofy, purry, eager to

love and ready to go home with you today. I’m filled to

the brim with personality and I will even head butt your chin as we cuddle. Let’s get this

party started!

►Hey, I’m James Hetfield (A252219) and I

think it would rock if you

would take me home! I’m a

1-year-old, solid black boy who

has already been neutered. Animal Control saved me from life as a stray on the streets. Thank heavens they came

and picked me up. I enjoy tuna flavored treats, I like play-ing with feathered toys and, as you can see, I don’t mind being held. If you put your hand down to my level, I will

come running to get head rubs and to be petted. If you are looking to add a very loveable feline to your home, please

consider adopting me.

►Fortunately for me, I was picked up by Animal Control as I was straying down Highway 421. Now that I’m safely here at the shelter, I’m focusing my energy on finding a new

home. I’m a petite, Chocolate Lab named

Truffles (A252093). I’m just 2-years-old, I’m good on a leash, I will sit for a treat and I like squeaky

toys. Just being near you brings me joy and if you reach down and pet me, that’s even better! I will be a great family dog if only

given the chance. Would you love a sweet girl like me?

◄My name is Doc (A252019) and I’m a Boxer and Lab mix who is just 1-year-old. I really love playing with toys, I can sit on com-mand for a treat, and I think life should be all about having fun and feeling loved. I have already been neutered, I’m eager to please and I’m willing to learn new things. How about it? Could you and I be forever friends?

►I’m a pastel grey Tabby and a true gem! My name is

Opal (A252016) and I love people. I find joy in being petted and especially like

head rubs. They’re my ab-solute favorite! I’ll even rub

my head into your hand. Animal Control picked me

up as a stray and I have since been spayed. I like

hiding in and playing in pa-per bags but I don’t really

care for life in a shelter. I’d love it if you’d come adopt

me today! If you want to know more about me, feel

free to call the shelter.

Page 18: PawPrints Magazine April 2011

My name is Sheena, that means God's

Gift. Please go to my page at

www.oc-paw.com where there are many pictures

and the story of my life. (“Sheena was Shot” is my

page). They called me the Poster Dog of

NC. I had been hit by a car when I was young and

never received treatment, but I survived. I was abandoned and left to fend for myself, but I survived. When trying to ask someone for help, I was shot with buckshot, but I sur-vived. Now I am with my wonderful foster mom and dad,

and if you go to my website, you can see for yourself how I have flourished in their home with their love and attention. I am 1½-years-old, about 40 pounds, spayed, heartworm negative, microchipped and vaccinated. I love all crea-tures great and small: cats, dogs and children. I love to

hike, run and play in the surf. If you are looking for a companion to be true to you, please consider bringing me home and adding me to your family. To adopt me, please

call Onslow County Partners for Animal Welfare at 484-883-3552 and ask to speak to Dotty.

Could You Help Heal My Leg?

Hi there, faithful PawPrints readers! My name is

Brindy (CM3408) and I’m a 1 to 2-year-old Boxer/Terrier mix who has all it takes to be a wonderful

family member: I’m house-trained, leash-trained,

friendly to other dogs, can sit on command, will take treats gently from your fin-gers, and am already neu-tered and vaccinated. I’m pretty great, right? That’s

why my friends at Pender County Animal Control want to help me as much as they can. You see, I have a torn ACL

which will require surgery. The surgery costs around $900. If you could contribute any amount, no matter how great or small, I would be so grateful! Please send it to Pender County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 1209, Burgaw,

NC 28425. Please be sure to put ‘Brindy’s surgery’ on the memo line of your check, and make the check payable to

Pender County Animal Shelter. Thank you so much! Someone has already paid for my heartworm treatment,

which means I will come to my new family heartworm free, at no expense to them. See how committed folks are to

me? That should tell you how special I am! If you’d like to meet me, or if you have any questions, please call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis

at 910-279-3196.

I am sponsored by the Keffer family; Dixie, Luke, Kira, Nikki and Charly. Thank you!

◄My name is Cuddles and I’m a 9-month-old neutered boy with a loving and friendly disposition. I get along with everyone - men, women, and children. I also easily make friends with other cats and dogs. I’ve been playing very nicely with the other kitties here, but I’m ready to wave goodbye and travel to my new home. Oh yes, I’m vaccinated and trained to use the litterbox. Adopt me and you’ll never be lonely!

◄If a precious orange Tabby is your heart’s

desire, get ready to fall in

love! My name is Mr. Kitty and I think I’m the

perfect man for you. You’ll

never be lonely again with me around. I’m a neutered, vaccinated,

litterbox-trained sweetheart who

weighs in at a soft and cuddly 14 pounds. I sure do love being with humans and possess a calm, mellow, laid-back

attitude. Prepare to have your heart melted!

►My name is Squirrel and I’m incredibly cute, if I do say so myself! Look how I posed

for my picture - I was made to be in the spotlight! I’m a 5-month-old, 6 pound kitten

who once lived in a home that had too many cats. That’s

how I came to be here. I DO get along just great with other felines. I also had lived hap-pily with two children (7 and

10-years-old) in my previous life. You’ll find that I’m ex-

tremely sweet and highly en-tertaining. Come meet me!

►I’m Charlie Brown. Don’t you think I’m

adorable? At 39 pounds, I’m a cuddly boy who

loves being with people. In fact, I was a bit of a

couch potato in my former home. I loved sitting with my folks,

watching TV and snoozing. But don’t get me wrong, I also love to play and am very happy to be in a fenced-in yard

for some ball-tossing. I’m just 10-months-old

and lost my family when they moved away. I get along great with other dogs and would love to meet you!

◄Hi there, I’m Gracie! I’m a beautiful Shepherd/Boxer mix with perfect manners! I easily sit on command and am already house-trained. At just 4-years-old, I once lived inside/outside with my family and enjoyed going for walks and car rides. I get along very well with children, but ages 7 and up are best since I’m a playful girl. I stay in a fence and would love to play ball or Frisbee with you one day. Let’s get together!

◄This is your lucky day because I’m up for adoption! You’ll find I’m the perfect family companion. My name is Molly and I’m a 3-year-old Golden Retriever mix who is already spayed, vaccinated, and on heartworm prevention. I am house-trained, familiar with a doggy door, good in a fence, and have excellent house manners. I love other dogs and children and I enjoy walks with my family. I’m simply great!

Howdy! My name is Hampton and I’m a super

cute 8-week-old puppy. I’m a white Boxer mix who is fixed and current on age appropriate vaccinations. I’m also current on heart-worm and flea prevention. My owners surrendered

me because they couldn’t afford a new puppy. I love to play, I love playing with other dogs and I’m happy all the time. I’m ok around kitty cats and I’m looking for a home with a fenced

yard for me to go out and play in. I’m also good on a leash and I know how to sit for a treat. Pretty impressive for such a young pup, huh? If you are looking for a lov-ing, smart and eager to please companion, we need to

hookup. For more information or to adopt me, please call Furever Friends Animal Rescue at 910-383-2100 (Monday through Saturday between 8am-6pm).

I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange

Hello! My name is Gracie and, at 10-years-old, I’m hop-ing to find a special person or family who will bring me back home where I belong. I was once part of a loving family, but then a day came when everything changed. My

owner became ill and could no longer keep me. There

was no one else to take me in and I was brought to South-port Oak Island Animal Res-

cue (SOAR). It’s quite a change to go from a comfy

home with familiar sights and sounds to the strange surroundings of an animal shelter. I’m an affectionate Tabby girl who enjoys receiving attention - I like to be held and will happily snuggle up in your arms. I’m also spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. There’s no

doubt that I would make someone very happy with my purr-ing, pleasing personality. If you’d like to meet me, please call SOAR at 910-457-6340. They can give you very easy

directions and I’ll be so happy to greet you!

I am sponsored in loving memory of Speckles.

◄I’m a small Hound - just 30 pounds - and I was found as a

stray in South Carolina. My name is Juliet and I’m a sweet,

gentle, 1-year-old girl who would love to live in a quiet

home with my very own Romeo. I play extremely well with other dogs and enjoy taking walks.

I’m looking for a person or fam-ily with a fenced-yard and

a desire to share their life with a good-natured girl like me. I’m

already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. How

about giving this Juliet a very happy ending?

◄Hello! My name is Bella Maria and I’m a 2-year-old Walker Hound girl who was found on a

dirt road by a kind stranger. I was starving at the time but I’ve been

living in a wonderful foster home and am now

up to 31 pounds, fully grown. I’m very sweet

and I get along well with the six other dogs living

with me. This photo was taken at an adoption fair in Southport and I was so

happy to greet all the new people. Call today and let’s make plans to meet!

◄My name is Sugar Pie and I’m a 4-year-old Redbone/Bloodhound mix girl. I have floppy ears as soft as butter and I also have the most kissable mouth. In

fact, I’m kissin’ people all the time

because I’m extremely friendly and affectionate. I enjoy playing and

being with people. I love other dogs, too.

I really want to be part of a family. Would you let me be your new baby?

►It’s Puppy Time! Have you been hoping to share your life with a sweetie-pie like

me? Well, I’m up for adoption, so sit back and listen to how wonderful I am! My name is Pepper Ann and I’m a 16-week-old

Hound mix girl who was found as a stray. I’m currently in a foster home that consists of dogs ranging from Chihuahuas to Border Collies, so I

think it’s safe to say I get along great with all dogs from small to big! I weigh just 10 pounds right now and am

already spayed and vaccinated. I love going for rides in the car, love to play with toys and am crate-trained. I’m

also happy, affectionate and I LOVE people!

◄I’m a precious puppy named Rudi! Rudi is short for Rudolph be-cause I was found on

Christmas Eve. I’m 14 to 16-weeks-old and

they tell me I’m a wire-haired boy, probably some sort of Terrier. I’m in a foster home and I get along great with the other dogs

there. My foster family takes me to work with them, so I’m well socialized and happy to meet new people. I’m intelligent, adorable,

and I can sit and give you my paw. I’m small now, and they think I’ll be 30 to 35 pounds when grown. Oh yes,

I’m already neutered and vaccinated. Call today!

►I might be nothin' but a hound dog, but I sure am proud! My name is Beau and I was part of a litter of twelve puppies that was

adopted out four years ago. Sadly, my owner became

very ill and could no longer keep me. The good news is

that I have perfect house manners and am very well

behaved! I walk nicely on a leash, am house-trained, can sit for a cookie, and I get along well with other

dogs and human children. I am even used to sleeping in bed with my family, if it’s

allowed. Please give me a home where I can be loved!

Maci and I’m a 7-year-old Basenji/Australian

Shepherd mix girl who weighs in at a medium-

sized 52 pounds. That’s a perfect size: not too big and not too small. I’m already house-trained,

leash-trained, great during car rides and friendly to adults, dogs and cats. I

will even sit on command and wait for you to toss me

the ball. It’s sad that my owner moved away without me, but now I have a chance to live a new life with you! Would you come meet me? We can toss a few balls together. I’m

guy! I am very lov-ing and very sweet, and I’m hoping to find a wonderful home really soon! I

had two brothers and a sister, but they’ve been adopted. Now I’m playing with the other dogs in my foster home, counting the days until my new family adopts me. I love people, but I’d prefer a home without young kids. I am neutered and vaccinated and ready to be your boy! If

I was hit by a van that didn’t even stop! Luckily a wonderful couple saw me get hit and rushed to my rescue. They headed to

the vet and had me exam-ined. I had a dislocated

hip, a fracture in my pelvis and a lot of small wounds and scrapes. The couple have adopted two dogs

from SOAR, so they called the shelter and SOAR

agreed to take me in! My two guardian angels are fostering me while I heal. They decided to call me

Gracie and I’m a 9-month-old Boxer mix girl. My emergency room bill is covered, but I will need more medical attention, so SOAR is in desperate need of your help. If you would like to donate, please send your tax-deductible contribution to SOAR, 3376 St. Charles Place, Southport, NC 28461. An account has also been set up for me at Four Paws Animal Hospital, 4320 Southport-Supply Rd SE #500, Southport, NC 28461. Please put “SOAR’s Baby” in the memo line. PawPrints Magazine’s 9th Annual Cover Model Search

The Judges’ Decisions Are In: Winning Cover Dogs and Runners-Up

Winning Cover Dog “Sebastian”

Submitted by: Jean Strahan

I had promised my 5-year-old twin girls, Isabella and Sophia, that when we settled in to our new home in Hampstead NC, they could adopt a dog. I was thinking they would like a cute little something and we would of course rescue, so we picked up PawPrints Magazine and it has changed our lives! The ad that caught our eye had a photo of a Saint Bernard named Sebastian. It said he was a 2-year-old, goofy, playful, loving Saint Bernard that had a unique ability to make people smile. It also said he had a perfect heart-shape on his left side. We read that when he was little he had been kept in a crate that was too small and could not stand up, which caused his legs to become deformed. He was named Sebastian after the crab from the Little Mermaid because of the way he walked, but his awkward gait did not stop him from running and playing. How could two little girls pass all of that up - hearts, the Little Mermaid and a big, hairy playmate!! We went to see him at his adoption event at Petco and then he came for a home visit. He jumped out of the adoption van and ran straight into the pond, then this big, wet, hairy dog did what all Saint Bernards do...he gave a BIG shake and got us all wet. He fol-lowed the girls around and they hooked up their little red wagon with jump ropes and Sebastian gave them a ride. WE WERE ALL IN LOVE. The girls took him to Poplar Grove Plantation's Doggy Costume Con-test and, when getting their award for 3rd place, Sophia took the mic and gave an unplanned speech on how they had just adopted Sebastian and that it was a good thing to do because there are lots of dogs looking for families. I was proud of her and what adopting this big, loveable dog had done was given my girls understanding and compassion for animals. Sebastian has the title of "Farm Manager" and never misses a trip to the barn to help do chores. He watches over the girls and has come run-ning to get me when one of them is hurt and crying on a walk in the woods. He swims with the ducks, eats hay with the horses and, most of all, he tolerates being dressed up. Usually he is wearing something pink. Sebastian went from a dog who spent his entire life in foster homes to having a home where we believe he was supposed to end up. He changed our lives, especially the lives of two little girls who had tons of love to give and they found out that Sebastian did too. He will be, with-out a doubt, one of the BIGGEST parts of their childhood!

1st Runner-Up

“Biscuit” Submitted by: Vickie Pait

I went with my church on a mission trip to Frakes, Kentucky to work on a couple of houses in 2008. When we went to our first house, this precious little white dog came run-ning up to us and was so happy. I told the homeowner how sweet and cute he was and she said, “I’m getting ready to take him to the pound”. Well, I was horrified. I asked if she would keep him until that Friday when our trip would be ending and she answered positively. We played with “Biscuit” the whole week and he always greeted us with a smile. He came home with us on the church van and the next morning I broke the news to my husband. He also fell in love with him and he has been with our family ever since. Biscuit has really made our family whole. We had another rescue dog that we had to have euthanized after owning him for 15 years so we knew that we eventually wanted another dog. Biscuit fit right in. He does enjoy lying on our kitchen table. I consider him my cen-terpiece, as this is his preferred spot in the house. Last year, my husband had a heart at-tack and while he was in the hospital, friends took care of our “son” Biscuit. Each day when they came over to sit with him, he had a piece of my husband’s clothing, usually his boots on the table with him. This was odd behavior for him and we knew that he missed him terribly. He was so happy when he came home from the hospital. Biscuit deserves to be on the cover because he is the most beautiful dog ever! He is also the best dog ever.

2nd Runner-Up “Chloe”

Submitted by: Beverly French

Hi. My name is Beverly French and I adopted a black lab from New Hanover County Animal Control. I adopted her on January 14, 2009. The last two years have been the best two years of my life. It was actually Chloe's birthday the day I adopted her. She is a true blessing to me every day. I take her to the park at least once a day and enjoy her snuggles every night. She is truly my best friend. I love coming home to her and taking her everywhere I can. She trav-els with me and loves family time. She especially loves my little nephews, Noah and Ethan. She enjoys running on the beach and around the loop at Wrightsville Beach. The reason I think she should be on the cover is because my story can tell everyone how important it is to adopt and how it is so rewarding. For many months before I adopted, I tossed up the idea of buying a dog or going to Animal Control. The day my dad said, "You need to save a dog and when you get there, they will pick you, you won't have to pick them." He was right!!! When I walked into Animal Control two years ago, I opened the gate to see her and she licked me in the face. I knew she had picked me and I wasn't going home without her. After filling out all of the paperwork, Chloe and I headed to PetSmart for food, toys, and treats. I thank my dad daily for the wonderful advice. I hope you will consider Chloe in the search for the Cover Model. She just turned 3 and this would be the best birthday present!!!!

3rd Runner-Up (tie)

“Tiesto” Submitted by: Susan Miller

My husband and I spotted our dog Tiesto, then named Sammy, in the January 2009 edition of PawPrints. In his little black and white photo he looked tiny and frail, and his dark eyes looked frightened. But somehow we just knew that he was our dog. After we contacted Paws Place, Tiesto’s foster mom brought him to our home. We were delighted, but cautious too, as any new “parents” would be. Tiesto didn’t jump on us or wag his tail. He seemed to be silently and warily studying us. For several weeks he spent nearly all of his time, both sleeping and waking, huddled in a pile of fleece blan-kets in his crate. He sought very little atten-tion. Then, one evening as I sat on our liv-ing room floor, Tiesto approached me, coiled himself into a little ball, and plunked down into my lap. My husband and I knew that Tiesto finally felt like he was at home, and that we had created that bond of trust that is unique to man and dog. Now, sometimes my husband and I look at each other and ask, “What did we do be-fore we got Tiesto?” He keeps us constantly entertained with his playful antics, as he flings his toys all over our living room. One of our favorite things is when he does what we call “torqueing,” running at top speed in circles around our yard. Tiesto is truly part of our family, and we adore his sweet, silly, affectionate nature. Now, he wags his tail so hard that his whole behind wiggles. We think that Tiesto is a perfect example of how rescue pets can be wonderful companions, and are grateful every day for how he has enriched our lives.

3rd Runner-Up (tie) “ClaraBow”

Submitted by: Sheila Gardner

All I can say about “ClaraBow” is...she is a wonderful “old chiweenie lady”. She was adopted from Wayne County Animal Control and Adoption Center in Goldsboro, NC. Picked up as a stray, she was scared to the point of trembling, vomiting and diarrhea. She had extreme dental disease that was caus-ing her to have a very unpleasant odor. Nonetheless, she won my heart as I walked by her cage. She peeked out at me from under the blanket where she was hiding. It was love at first sight. After a trip to the veterinarian, to have her teeth cleaned (some had to be ex-tracted) and to be spayed, she was given a clean bill of health. The doctor esti-mated her to be approximately 10-years-old. It did not take her long to become a part of my pack and with her “old lady charm” became the queen of our home. She is a joy to live with and the greatest cuddle bug ever. I would like to see “ClaraBow” fea-tured as your cover model because so many times senior, homeless animals are overlooked. Older animals do make wonderful pets. She could be a testimo-nial that older animals are great compan-ion pets. They have a lot of love left to give.

I’m a gorgeous, long-haired boy named Ragdoll! And just like a

ragdoll, I enjoy being held and cuddled. I’m only 2-years-old and was recently rescued from a home where there were too many

cats. I heard someone say it was a ‘hoarding’ situation. I was treated well, though, because

I’m very gentle, friendly and laid-back. I get

along just fine with hu-man children, dogs and other cats. My friends at Cat Adoption Team made sure I was neutered and vac-cinated and, of course, I’m litterbox-trained. If you’d like to see how handsome and sweet I am, come to Petsmart in

Wilmington - we’re there 7 days a week! You can also call Cat Adoption Team at 910-792-9014 for more information

on adopting me.

I am sponsored by the UNCW Pre-Veterinary Medical Association. Thank you!

I’m the sweetest girl you will ever

meet! My name is Pitty and I would love to curl up in your lap and give you kisses. I love

belly rubs and basking in the sun. I am crate-trained,

love to play ball and I will do well in an active home. I am a 2-year-old

spayed female and am up to date on my vaccinations and heartworm

prevention. I get along with other dogs, cats and children. I was found on the side of a busy road and have been

living at Wilmington Animal Healthcare. Everyone there fell in love with me and would like me to find a forever home. I’d be such a wonderful family addition. Call

910-791-7101 and come meet me today!

◄If sweet-natured Tabbies are your feline of choice, you’re gonna love me! My name is

Mia (FF3030) and I’m a 2-year-old girl who

recently lost my home through no fault of my

own. My owner had too many cats and had to

bring some to the shelter. I’m a calm,

friendly and loving girl who happily sits at the front of my cage so you can rub me from head to

toe. Even though the door is open, I don’t try

to hop out, I just want to sit with you and be loved. Adopt me, please, and let’s get started on a happy new life.

◄I’m a gorgeous Tabby girl with distinctive Bullseye markings that make everyone say, “Wow, she’s beautiful!” My name is Tiffany (FF3120) and I came to the shelter on January 7 of this year. I had wandered up to a stranger’s house and he fed me for a few days while looking for my owner. No one claimed me, so you’re in luck! I enjoy being held and am very affectionate. Please take me home where I belong. I’m such a great girl!

◄I’ve been living here since January! Won’t someone please take pity on a darling boy

like me? I’m so ready to warm your home and

heart. My name is Mr. Mouse (FM3140) and I was picked up in Hampstead as a stray.

I’m a very friendly, 2-year-old fellow who

gets up excitedly when visitors approach. I

love attention and am so sweet! Please let

April be the month that I find myself held in the arms of my new family.

►Hi! I’m a 1½-year-old Beagle boy named

Marvin. Are you looking for a loveable, good-

natured companion? I’m the one for you, I bet! I’m currently in a foster home and really enjoy playing

with the 7 and 8-year-old neighbor children who

stop by. I just love to be petted and I walk well on a leash. I am vaccinated

and on heartworm prevention, too! If

you’d like to make my acquaintance, please call my foster mom at 910-285-6212 and she’ll tell you more!

◄I could have sat on this person’s shoulder all day! I’m not one of those cats who squirms when you hold me - I enjoy being cuddled in your arms or perched on your shoul-

der. My name is Confetti (FF3240) and I’m a

6-month-old Tortoiseshell who is simply adorable! I truly LOVE to have atten-tion from humans and will be great company for you if you live alone, or for the

entire family! I’m still quite a baby and petite in

size, so you’ll get to see me grow into quite a beauty.

►See how I’m flopped over in my photo, just begging you

with my eyes to touch me? This

is what I do when someone opens my cage door - I don’t try to jump out, my main objective

is to be rubbed! Affectionate, friendly cats like me are highly prized, so why am I at Animal Control? My name is Tabitha (FF3024) and I’m a 1-year-old girl who was found as a stray. I’d be such a friendly companion to anyone, from adults to

children. Won’t you please come meet me?

home to come along. I am only 6 or 7-months-old and was found run-ning loose. I sure am

lucky the dogcatcher got me before a car hit me. Now, if my luck holds out, I’ll get a forever

I’ve Been Waiting Two Years for a

Home! Hello! I’m Lola and I’m a very sweet and loving

girl. I’m a 3-year-old Shepherd mix and all I want is to please and

be loved. I do have an old cruciate ligament injury which requires

me to stay on glucosa-mine chondroiton for

my lifetime. It would be helpful if I were hand walked on a regular

basis to strengthen my muscles. I’m not so

fond of other female dogs, but I interact very well with lar-ger, docile male dogs. I’m behaving beautifully at a dog boarding facility and hope to soon find a forever family.

Let’s arrange a visit, okay? To do so, please call the Sun-burst Foundation at 910-622-0011. You can also email

I’m a 2-year-old Bluetick Hound mix who is already house-trained and leash-trained. I love greeting all the folks who come to the shelter and I get along well with kids and dogs. Let me be your girl!

►Hello, friends! My name is Shelby and I’m

a 6-year-old, female Lab/Retriever mix who

once lived with my buddy Amber, pictured next to me, in a home. Our owner fell on hard times so we are both at the shelter looking for

new families. You’ll be so happy to invite me

shots and on heartworm prevention. I get along great with children and am very affectionate! Let’s go!

◄Hi there! I’m Lenny, a 3-year-old neutered boy who loves to be rubbed and is very sweet. ready to bring you lots. My photo shows you how playful and friendly I am. Toys are so much fun! I’m Danielle and I was born on June 15, 2010.

►Hi there! My name is Amber and I’m a petite

Lab mix, just 5-years-old. I was adopted from Pender County Humane Society in 2006 with my friend Shelby (she’s pictured next to me), but my family fell upon hard times and had to return me to the shelter. Here’s the good news: I’m already

house-trained, leash-trained, spayed, up to date on shots and on heartworm prevention. I love all people

and would be great with children. Please come to

the shelter today. I am very friendly and happy!

◄I’m Ronnie, a playful Shepherd/Lab mix born on November 23, 2010. My pregnant mom was

found as a stray by a very nice family. She gave birth to seven babies

(including me) and the family found homes for

five. My sister Miley and I are still patiently waiting!

I love to play and can often be found romping around the room with a toy in my mouth. I’m

working on leash-training and am a very happy,

friendly pup. Hurry on over and meet me (or Miley) today!

who has already been neutered and vaccinated. And of course I’m litterbox-

◄I’m another one of those

poor souls who lost my home

due to the economy. My owner lost his job and could

no longer afford to keep me. My name is Zydeco and

I’m a 3-year-old Catahoula mix who loves people. I’m looking for a home where I can be the only 4-legged

companion. I walk well on a leash and will sit on command. I don’t like to use the bathroom in my kennel so it’s a safe bet that I’m house-trained. I love playing

with toys and I especially love getting attention from hu-mans. If it’s an affectionate girl you want, adopt me!

►I was a stray, but I chose the best place to

discover me! It was a veterinary hospital and a

kind worker took me inside. The doctor spayed and vaccinated

me, and now I’m at SOAR looking for a family. I’m Tequila Rose, a medium-haired Tortie girl, just 2 to 3-years-old. I’m very friendly and love to receive attention from humans!

►I have a sad story to tell,

but the ending hasn’t yet been

written - that will be up to

you! My name is Buster and I’m a 5-year-old medium-haired Tabby boy who once

lived in a loving home. Then my owner lost his job and could no longer afford to care for me. I’m a little shy at first, due to my

new surroundings, but I warm up quickly with loving atten-tion from humans. I’m already neutered, up to date on

shots and litterbox-trained. Please bring me home!

►I’m an adorable kitten named Streak! I was

born on April 14 and was found as an orphan,

completely alone. I’m now having fun in my foster home and I get

along well with a big dog and several other cats

and kittens. I’m extremely playful and

healthy as can be! I am pure white except for a black ‘streak’

between my ears. If you are interested in an exceptionally beautiful white male kitty,

call my SOAR foster mom at 910-278-4437.

◄I’m a loveable girl and my

name is Stella. I’m just settling down for a nap,

but I’ll gladly delay it for a chance to tell you my story. Not too long

ago, I wandered up as a stray

and SOAR took me in. I have

soft grey and white fur and love to be held and kissed. I get along great with the other cats (we live in a cage-less room) and am spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Adopt me!

►My name is Louie and I’m a friendly, affectionate

boy. I’ve been at

SOAR for too long, so I can hardly express how

grateful I would be to be adopted! Let’s just say that lots of purrs and kisses would be in store for the one who takes me home. It’s quite a mystery why I haven’t

been snapped up. I love to play with toys and will keep my new family entertained! I use my scratching post and

litterbox and am in great health. Adopt me!

street. My coat is a strikingly bold red and black

brindle, almost like tiger stripes. I may be mixed

with American Staffordshire Terrier and Lab. I’m still fairly small now, and play

well with other dogs. Adopt me and let’s enjoy life!

My name is Leroy and

I am a 2-year-old

Chow cross with a

pretty blue tongue! I am cur-

rently being fostered by

the nice people at Pets Plus

Grooming in Porter's Neck. When I came to my foster home I had been living at the Pender County Animal Shel-ter for a long time. My hair was so matted and smelly that no one would even think about taking me home. My foster mom said it was so bad that they had to shave me so that the sores on my skin could heal. They also say I probably started life out on a chain in the backyard. Wow, do I love living inside! I am a smart boy and am completely house-

trained and crate-trained. I have been neutered and treated for parasites, too! I am a sweet boy who loves the ladies! I am quite shy with men but do warm up to them eventually. I am good with kitties and love to play with

children, but I am not fond of other dogs. I want all of the hugs and kisses and attention to be mine, so I need to be

an only dog. I walk well on a leash and ride well in the car. The groomer here says I'm great! Won't you take me

home? Please call 910-681-0510 for more information on adopting me.

My name is Shiloh

and I’m an adorable Border

Collie mix looking for

a loving home! I’m

an 18-month-old girl who loves all people,

walks well on a leash, and enjoys going for

car rides. I’m doing very well with my potty training and have never shown any signs of aggression to anyone. My

foster mom has taken me to doggie day care and I did really well with the other dogs and had a fine time playing with them. I also love playing outdoors, but I’ll need a pri-

vacy fence since I can climb a chain link one. It would also be wonderful if there were children in my new family, or

other dogs, so that I’ll have playmates. Border Collies like to keep busy and we’re very smart! We also like water. As for my health, I’m already spayed, vaccinated and on heart-worm prevention. I’m with Columbus Humane Society, but I’m located in Wilmington. If you’d like to meet me, please

email [email protected] or call 910-640-1505.

I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance Agency in memory of Dingo.

Be a Saint and Foster a Saint Some big dogs need some big hearts in Wilmington. Cape Fear Saint Bernard Rescue is in need of foster homes for several rescued dogs. The rescue is filled to capacity and can take in no more dogs until these are placed in fos-ter homes. Some of the dogs include Gracie, who is healthy and loving; Naomi, who is undergoing heartworm treatment; and Sunshine and Ivy. The rescue group pro-vides all medical costs and support. If interested, please contact Heather at [email protected] or call 910-547-4823.

‘Smile’ for the Camera Paw's Place Animal Rescue in Boiling Spring Lakes will hold its Annual Pet Photo Fundraiser on Sunday, May 1 from 11am to 4pm in downtown Southport. The cost is $25 and will include one thumbnail proof with multiple poses and a CD of high resolution images of your pet, which will allow you to make as many photos as you'd like. For more information, please contact Paws Place at 910-845-7297 or Peggy at 910-253-9258.

Donations Needed for Rescued Dogs Undergoing Heartworm Treatment Currently, Adopt-An-ANGEL (AAA) has 22 dogs undergoing heartworm treatment at the same time! Even at non-profit discounted rates, the treatment runs between $250-500 per dog depending on each dog’s weight. With 22 dogs going through treatment at the same time, it will cost the organization between $5,000 to $8,000 - which is disastrous for a small rescue. If a lot of people help a little, the expense will be much more manageable. If you would like to pitch in, please mail checks to: Adopt-An-ANGEL, P.O. Box 15095, Wilmington, NC 28408 or visit www.adoptanangel.net. Vet bills are online for you to review at "our vet bills" under the "about us" tab. Call 910-392-0557 for other questions.

Puppies and Kittens Need Your Help! Adopt-An-ANGEL (AAA) is seeking foster homes for young kittens and puppies. AAA will pay for vetting if you provide transportation, food, room and board. Please call 910-392-0557 if you would like to foster and save the lives of puppies or kittens or for more info on the Brunswick dog voucher program.

Looking for the perfect family dog? Your

search is over - I’m your girl! My name is Lucy and I’m a Yellow Lab mix with perhaps a bit of Airedale thrown in.

You see, I have that adorable scruffy beard like Airedales do. I’d be an ideal companion for anyone - I love men,

women, children, other dogs and even cats! In fact, in my foster home, I’ll sleep with the cats sometimes. I’m already house-trained and have excellent house manners. I walk well on a leash and can sit on command. I rarely bark and sleep well through the night. I love chew bones, dog cook-ies and playing in the backyard. At my foster home, I play

within an invisible fence. I really enjoy it when humans give me hugs and kisses - that makes me so happy! As for my health, I’m spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm preven-tion. At just 2-years-old, I’m ready to spend the rest of my

life making you very happy! If you’d like to meet me, please call my Pender County Animal Control foster mom

at 910-285-6212.

I am sponsored by Cindy Meyers in loving memory of Tantar, who believed in second chances.

Looking for a well-trained, extremely loving dog? Just look at me - I’m a

professional when it comes to obedience AND affection! As

my photo shows, all you have to do is say

‘sit’ and I immedi-ately plop my little

bottom down on the ground. It doesn’t

matter if you have a treat or not - I in-

stantly obey. My tail keeps wagging, though - see the blurry thing in the photo? Oh yes, I can also shake with BOTH hands and

catch treats in my mouth! My name is Joy (A037883) and joy will be what you’ll have if you adopt me. At 3-years-old, I’m a female Terrier mix with a friendly and happy outlook on life. I love being rubbed and am extremely

attentive and eager to please. I was found as a stray, but someone took the time to teach me a lot of good stuff.

Now you can be the one to reap the rewards! I’m waiting for you at Brunswick County Animal Control. Do yourself a favor and come on over! For driving directions or more

information, please call 910-754-8204. See you soon!

I am sponsored by Willetts Horse Farm, Bolivia, NC in loving memory of Maya.

DOOK-N-DANCE FERRET SHELTER

My name is Gypsy Rose Lee and I came to the shelter after my owners left me with neighbors and never re-claimed me. The people I was left

with were going to put me outside on a day when it was 25 degrees! I was eating hot dogs and cheap cat food. I

am about 9-years old and have hair on my face and front legs only. I am also blind. I recently got my first melatonin implant. Even with all of my issues, I still play like a kid and have loads of energy. To adopt me, call 910-548-2831 or

email [email protected]. You can view other ferrets at www.petfinder.com/shelters/NC189.html.

Are you upside-down or am I? Hee, hee, don’t worry, I am sim-ply a happy kitty turning somer-

saults for attention. A hand-some guy like me can’t get too

much lovin’. They call me Curly and wait until you see my striking black and white mark-ings. Let’s see, affectionate,

handsome...and let’s not forget already neutered, up to date on vaccinations and used to being around friendly dogs.

What more could you possibly want in a companion? Please call my foster mum, Edna, at 910-866-4289 to learn

how we can meet. You can also visit A Shelter Friend online at www.AShelterFriend.org and on Facebook at

A SHELTER FRIEND OF SE NORTH CAROLINA

PHOENIX LANDING FOUNDATION

My name is Sunshine. I am a cheerful and affectionate

Sun Conure who is less than 10-years-old. My wings are not clipped and I love to take short flights around the house but I always fly right back to

my cage after a short flight. I love to perch on shoulders and

give kisses. My favorite food treat is a pistachio nut and I eat a well-balanced diet of pellets, a few seeds and fresh

fruits and veggies. I love to take daily baths in a large bowl of water! I spent the last 5-years in a household with dogs

and young children so I am used to both. Would you please consider making me part of your family? To adopt me, please contact Phoenix Landing at 866-749-5634, visit www.phoenixlanding.org (click on the link for adoption/

foster) or email [email protected]. We have an urgent need for temporary foster homes for many species of parrots; please go to our website and fill out an application if

you would like to help.

OPERATION TOPCAT

My name is Muzzie and I’m a long-haired Torti. I’m a sweet girl who is

about 1-year-old. I had a rough begin-ning in life. For some reason, I was

kept in a cage outside in the hot sum-mer sun by the person who found me. A neighbor contacted Topcat and they took me in and got me ready for a for-

ever home. I was adopted but the other cat in the home hated me so I’m back with Topcat looking for a new home. I

like to be petted and will lay down next to you so you can love on me. I am good with cats but not small children. To adopt me, please email [email protected] or call 910-200-0612. To meet some of the other kitties here,

visit www.petfinder.com/shelters/NC250.html.

ONSLOW PARTNERS FOR ANIMAL WELFARE

My name is Sheena, that means God's Gift. I had been hit by a car

when I was young and never received treatment, but I survived. I was aban-doned and left to fend for myself, but I survived. When trying to ask some-

one for help, I was shot with buckshot, but I survived. Now I am with my

wonderful foster mom and dad, and if you go to my website, you can see for

yourself how I have flourished in their home with their love and attention. I am 1½-years-old, 40 pounds, spayed,

heartworm negative, microchipped and vaccinated. I love all creatures great and small: cats, dogs and children. I

love to hike, run and play in the surf. If you are looking for a companion to be true to you, call Dotty at 484-883-3552 to adopt me. For more information and to see more pictures

or me, visit the OC-PAW website at www.oc-paw.com.

PLEASURE ISLAND PAWS

Hi! My name is Mocha. I'm an ener-getic, sweet, spayed Chihuahua Min-

Pin mix. I love to play with other dogs, but haven't been around any cats. I am approximately 6-months-

old and a little over 10 pounds. I was dropped at someone's house as a

baby and then adopted out. But my owner relinquished me back because of her hectic work schedule and didn't

think is was fair for me to sit in a kennel all day. So of course, I am

kennel-trained but would love to cuddle with you at night. Please, if you are looking for a small, fun, loving puppy -

I'm your girl! Come meet me and let me warm your heart. Please call 910-458-3000 for more information!

COLUMBUS HUMANE SOCIETY

My name is Kayla and I was rescued from a puppy mill. I was kept in a barn with no light and used for breeding. I'm so happy to have been

rescued and now I'm a healthy and happy little spitfire who loves to zoom around the

house and play. I'm a little scared at first of strangers and especially men, so I would

do better in a home with an older lady or a couple. I've been around children, cats and other dogs but I'm a little

food aggressive with other dogs - that can be remedied by feeding me separately in my crate. I'm crate-trained and

my foster mom is house-training me. I’m just hoping to find a nice quiet home with a warm lap to sit on and a gentle

hand for belly rubs. For information on me, please send an email to [email protected] or call 910-640-1505.

PENDER ENDANGERED ANIMAL RESCUE

Hello, my name is Budee, and I am very grateful to be here in the PEAR rescue. I was pulled from

Pender County Animal Control last spring and have spent the entire time here. Christmas came and went and so did Valentine’s Day, and I am still with PEAR. I am a Shepherd mix and am waiting for

that special someone to find me. I love to get attention and just love

to be hugged. I am very healthy and the summer season is approaching, so I would really love to call someone my

family. If you are interested in adding me to your family, contact the rescue at [email protected] or

contact me at PEAR at 910-675-0867.

Hi, I’m Hawkeye, named after that practical joker, Hawkeye Pierce on the TV show MASH. Believe me, I live up to his carefree, fun-loving personality. I’m an intelligent, 65 pound boy and they tell me I’m a

Lab mix. My owner was quite eld-erly and he said I got too big. I am fully grown now and learning lots in my training with the Pawsitive Part-ners Prison Program. Please call if you would like to meet me and if someone asks if there is a Dr. in the house you can say yes! Meet Hawkeye, he’s

a surgeon! For more info, call 910-297-1338 or email [email protected]. Check out the rest of the

My name is Sir Galahad. I will be your knight in shining armor if you will give me a

chance. I am 1-year-old, up to date on all of my shots, and

neutered. I have soft white fur and beautiful eyes. I love to play and sometimes get a

little carried away. I'm not aggressive but I do play a little rough (so no little children please). I was left behind in a housing development and I was very scared. I wandered house to house until a nice lady rescued me. She called CAPS and they took me in. I enjoy hanging out on the sofa with my foster family and sleeping next to them at night. I like being scratched around my neck and head

and I get along with other cats. I would love a family with lots of love and a forever home. If you would like to

meet me or need more information, please email [email protected] or call 910-330-1376.

I’m Snuggles and I would love to be the bunny you give your child at Easter! My require-ments are few. I don’t need daily attention or exercise, I

don’t cost any money or take up any space, and I love to be carried around all day. If you get tired of me you can just

leave me anywhere and I will be fine, as I am just a toy, and

will never depend on you as a live rabbit would. So please consider me as the bunny you get for your child’s Easter basket. I promise never to scratch, bite or kick and will

always love hugs and kisses. Please contact Cape Fear House Rabbit Society by calling 910-471-7854 or emailing [email protected] to learn more about caring for a live rabbit. You can also visit www.capefearrabbits.org.

lovely golden eyes. I am an older lady, 10-years-old, and would love to have someone dote on me, rub and brush

me. I love attention and get along with other cats. I have been kept current on my vet visits, I am spayed and also front declawed so you don’t have to worry about me scratching your furniture. If you

think you would like for me to be your lap companion, please email [email protected] or call 910-259-3502.

Hello! I’m Lucy (SRC #962), a 3-year-old merle Schnoodle (a Schnauzer and Poodle mix) who has come to Schnauzer

Rescue of the Carolinas (SRC) as an owner turn-in. I am a happy, fun-loving girl

who has adjusted well to my foster home. I have shown no problems with men while being fostered and I love women! I

race to my feeding station each morning and evening

and wait for permission to be-gin eating. I walk well on a leash and love to explore the backyard! One thing I do not like is car rides, they tend to scare me. As soon as the car stops, I am fine. SRC be-lieves that I need a human companion who tends to be

more of a home body, since I prefer not to ride in vehicles for long periods and all I really want is lots of love and attention from my human companion. I do not require

another dog for company as long as my adoptive mom/dad gives me ample love and attention. I’m heartworm

negative, spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and micro-chipped. I get along well with other dogs and am playful

with cats, too. If you are interested in me, visit www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org. There you can fill out an application online and view other adoptable res-

cues. If you need an application mailed or faxed, call 910-264-8300.

MID-ATLANTIC GREAT DANE RESCUE LEAGUE

My name is Candy and I'm a 3-year-old girl. My owners surrendered me when they

could no longer care for me. I am good with all dogs

(large and small) and cats and children, too! I adapt very quickly to change and my foster family tells me I

have a bubbly personality. I would love to have a nice

yard and another fur buddy to play with. While I love to play, I also like to stay close to my humans. I sleep in my

own bed every night and do well out of a crate. I would love a home to call my own. For more info, please contact the NC Chapter Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League by calling Terri at 252-566-8934 or visiting www.magdrl.org.

If you are willing and able to give a loving home to some-one who will love you uncon-ditionally, then here is your chance! I’m Abel, a 3-year-

old mini-Schnauzer who wants to be your love bug, after warming up to you of

course. I am good with other dogs but a little shy at first, so it may be best for me to go to a home with no young kids. I am house and crate-trained

and should be the perfect companion for someone’s home. If you are interested and would like to find out more about me, visit www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org. There you can fill out an application online and view other adoptable rescues. If you need an application mailed or

faxed to you, please call 910-264-8300.

CAROLINA BORDER COLLIE RESCUE

My name is Josie and I’m a 9-year-old smooth coat Bor-der Collie. I am friendly to

humans and like to play with other dogs. I am already

spayed, microchipped, vacci-nated, and house-trained. I

really miss my family. I heard the words “too expen-

sive” a few times before I came to the shelter. I have Addison’s Disease and I need a shot about once a month. With this medicine, I am as

healthy as any other dog and I will live many more years. The medicine will cost about $70 a month. I assure you I

am worth it! Please apply to adopt me by visiting www.cbcr.org or by calling Ann at 919-682-6125.

Hi, my name is Carson. My foster mom says I am the

sweetest boy ever. Someone saved me from the interstate where I was cowering in the median. I was emaciated,

banged up, and very scared but I’m doing great now. I am a

very calm, well-mannered boy who is house-trained and crate-trained. I am great with

other dogs and kids and I am 1-year-old. I am a tall, lanky boy and weigh about 65 pounds. I am neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. All I want is to find a family or that spe-cial person to love me. If you might be that person, contact

DalPals at [email protected] or call 910-575-3141.

CAROLINA BASSET HOUND RESCUE

Hidey Ho...Ellie here. I'm a wiggly, happy kind of girl. I

love to go for walks, ride in the car and am completely-

SQUIRREL!!!! - house-trained. Sorry, I love to hunt out those

squirrels! I also love to snooze on the couch and I snore a tad,

what? Ladies snore. It's a sinus thing, I swear. Foster

momma thinks it's actually very endearing! I will let out a little "woof" when I'm excited, nothing too crazy, just to let you know that I'm happy about things. I fit in my foster home pretty quickly so I know I could fit into your home just as

quick. To meet me or find out more about me, please call 919-708-4247 or visit our website at www.cbhr.com.

Won’t you open

your heart to mine? My name is

Justice and I’m a very sweet, laid-back, Boxer mix girl. If you knew my sad story you would want to spoil me for the rest of my life! I am already spayed, vaccinated and on

heartworm prevention. I am also house-trained, and I do not chew or jump onto furniture. I have been around cats, other dogs and teenage boys and have been very friendly to everyone. Please give me your heart! I promise to love you forever and ever. For more information about adopt-

ing me, please call Patricia at 310-766-6011.

I am sponsored by Cindy Meyers in loving memory of Harley and Murphy.

How about a wink and a kiss? My name is

Mini Moo because my markings look like a milk cow, although I’m much prettier. I am a 2½-year-old spayed female with lots of love and energy.

I would prefer to live inside because I have very short hair and get

cold easily. I am house-trained and like my

crate, I know several commands (sit, down

and come) plus I’m great on a leash. I love to play ball and enjoy long walks. My only fault is that I don’t always like other dogs or cats.

That’s how I lost my first home, I didn’t play well with the other dogs. My foster home has lots of other dogs, too - so I don’t have the freedom I need and deserve. I am looking for an active home where I can be the only pet.

Please call Amy at 910-253-0501 for more information or to set up a time to meet me.

I am sponsored by Francesca Slaughter in loving

memory of Casper and Lucy.
