National Masters Road Relay Championships

Sutton Park - Saturday 14th May

from Mansel Pope

A sunny morning greeted those of us who travelled to Sutton Park for the 28th running of the National Masters Road Relay championships. Pride of place goes to the M65 team of Colin Davies (22.40), Dave Telford (21.02) and Jeff Norman (20.54). This was the same team as in the previous year, but despite all being another year older, as a team they managed to run almost a minute quicker and their 7th place lifted them 2 places higher than last year. The race was won by local rivals Stockport Harriers with Rob Taylor posting the fastest individual leg by a minute! Within the same race we had high hopes for ADAC to field two M55 teams. These hopes were thwarted by last minute injuries to both Dave Ainsworth and David Hughes, arguably our strongest pair. The re-arranged ‘A’ team of Mark Hunter(18.43), Graham Harrison (19.46) and Pete Pickwell (20.10) all ran well to bring the team home in 19th from 40 entries. Lockie Campbell was left as the sole representative in an incomplete B team but enjoyed his masters relay debut with a leg of 20.10. The race was won by South London Harriers. Earlier in the day saw the women’s races. ADAC fielded a W45 team which again was hit by last minute withdrawals due to injury and work commitments. Many thanks to Heather Johnson(23.13) and Annette Campbell (22.58) for stepping in at short notice to support Carole Harrison (21.20) to finish a team in 15th , the race being won by Dulwich Harriers. Another really enjoyable day with very competitive racing in all categories. Salford W35 were victorious with 7 seconds covering the first three! Many thanks to all those who ran and fingers crossed all are injury free next year!

Start of the men’s race

All the team members would like to thank Mansel Pope and Carole Harrison for their hard work in organising the teams. Thanks also to Linda Pickwell and Dave Rudd for their support on the day.

Mobberley Round The Runway 5 miles - Tuesday 3rd May

The eighth race in this year’s club road running championship attracted over 350 runners and they were led home by Zack Bamber of Vale Royal in a time of 27.17. Less than a minute behind the winner was Jon Powell who had a great run to finish third. First lady was Luisa Candioli of Sale Harriers in 31.31. Dan Martell had another excellent run to finish in the top twenty and he was followed home by John Noblett, Dave Ainsworth, Dave Livingstone, Graham Harrison and Brad Johnson. Carole Harrison continued her fine form to pick up the over 50 ladies’ prize once again whilst Gordon Nicoll and Margaret Bullock both finished well inside the top half of the field of 350 runners.

The ninth race in this year’s club road running championship saw the return of Andy Norman to the road with a strong run, just outside the top ten of a very impressive field. Steve Renny was just 3 seconds outside the personal best he set at the second of the 2013 Sale Sizzlers whilst Lora Blann, in impressive form at the moment, improved her personal best by 15 seconds. Graham Harrison ran his fastest 5K since 2012 whilst Peter Pickwell, who joins the V65s next January, won the V60 prize. Bev Jackson and Carole Harrison were the first and second ladies over 50 and Dave Telford was second man over 65. Alan Williams and Colin Davies had a tussle further down the field with Alan pulling away towards the finish. The recent ‘short course’ controversy didn’t appear to have an effect on the size of the field with 407 runners finishing the race, an increase on last year.

Dunham Massey 5K - Thursday 26th May

The first race in this year’s North Cheshire 5K Grand Prix series attracted a field of more than 200 run-ners on a cool evening, perfect for racing. There was a large number of spectators to watch the race in this wonderful setting. Mark Offord of Dragons (Sale) won the race in 15.57 just three seconds in front of Dave Norman. The first lady was Mandy Vernon of Trentham AC in 18.48. Second home for Altrincham in twelfth place overall was 16 year old Dan Racle in a new personal best. Dan Martell was just outside his best ever 5K time which was at Stretford parkrun but did set a new personal best for a certified 5K race. Steve Renny finished ahead of Neil Walker whilst Lisa Craig was second lady and Mark Hunter also finished inside the top 50 of a field of 219 finishers. Paul Abraham, Brad Johnson and Gordon Nicoll came in next ahead of Dave Telford (1st V65) and Jeff Norman (1st V70). Alan Williams, Jane Nicholson and Diane Hunter followed them home and Dave Attwell (1st V75) was well under 30 minutes. Full results: www.ukresults.net/2016/dunham1.html

My First London Marathon

(Virgin London Marathon - Sunday 24th April)

from David Hughes

I qualified for the 2016 London Marathon with a ‘Good for Age’ time of 3:15 at the 2015 Manchester Marathon. Just a few days before this year’s London Marathon it was revealed that the Manchester Marathon course in 2013 - 2015 was 380 metres short so my marathon PB disappeared overnight! When I started marathon training at the end of December my target was sub 3:10 but after setting a PB of 38:11 at the Salford 10K in March I thought I might be able to run closer to 3:05, though not sub 3:00 as Steve Renny was suggesting! I decided I would run at 7:05 - 7:10 min per mile pace for the first half. This would allow me to go sub 3:10 with a small positive split or get close to 3:05 with a negative split. I kept any other possible scenario out of my mind! Weather conditions on the day of the race were perfect; cool and overcast with only a light breeze.

I started from the Green start and made sure I was close to the front of the first pen, right behind

the celebs. The first few miles were crowded but I had no problem keeping to pace. My family were

spectating at Surrey Quays at around 9 miles but I missed them as they had crossed the course

before the elite runners had arrived, a decision they regretted later when they tried to get back to

Canada Water tube station! The support just kept growing as the race progressed and the noise

was incredible at some points. I reached half way in 1:33:42, just inside 3:08 pace, and was able to

keep this going well past 20 miles. At 23 miles I was feeling strong and decided to up the pace as I

knew I could get close to 3:05 with a few sub 7 min miles. 6:50, 6:51, 6:31 and 6:02 pace for the final

0.2 miles saw me cross the line in 3:05:51. The VMLM online stats showed that I passed 554 runners

and was passed by one in the final 7.2 km! A fantastic event, a very satisfying result and I hope to be

back next year with sub 3 hours in my sights!

Derek Walton’s 200 Parkruns

Derek Walton became the fourth member of Altrincham & District Athletic Club to have completed 200 parkruns when he ran at Wythenshawe Park, where he has now run 107 times, on 14th May. He has also run 56 times at South Manchester (Platt Fields), 14 times at Stretford (Longford Park) and 10 times at Heaton Park where he did his first parkrun in November 2009. On his regular trips to South Africa he has also run 7 times at Greenpoint parkrun in Cape Town. His total of 200 parkruns is completed with 3 runs at Woodbank Park, 2 at Warrington (Victoria Park) and one at Cheadle Hulme (Grove Park). The other three Altrincham runners to have run at least 200 parkruns are Maggie Jones with 270, Mike Jones 266 and Colin Davies 235. Alan Barlow has completed 167 parkruns with 158 of them being at Woodbank Park.

Fell Running

Bob Graham Round

April / May 2016 will probably be best remembered by fell runners for the ladies who set new Bob Graham records. If you have never heard of Jasmin Paris, read - www.runnersworld.co.uk/news/fell-runner-jasmin-paris...bob-graham.../14863.html

I know we have some very worthy record holders in the club, this record may also take some beating. Is this the fell equivalent of Paula Radcliffe's marathon time, I ask? It's certainly unbelievable and probably unattainable for the average man.

And then of course, there is Nicky Spinks, who in May decided to do ‘the double’ in forty five hours thirty minutes! Something for the history books. Now back to ADAC.

Thursday Evening Fell Runs

In May our runs were from The Boot, Willington Corner (Very Good!) which I know is a bit of a drive out for most of the club, but gave us the chance to run parts of Delamere Forest and the Sandstone Trail, and The Devonshire Arms, Mellor (Fine and Friendly), where I seem to get lost every time I think I know where I am going. The weather was kind both nights. So far there have been no takers for the 2nd June, so the next run will be on the 23rd June from the Shady Oak, Fernilee.

Club Championships

Rainow

Well it was a lovely night, not a sign of rain, for a change. Eleven club runners turned out. I managed to get around in a not very good time, but scored two points. Jon Powell was at the other end of the pack and seemed to have a very good run, well done to all who turned out.

Shining Tor was on a bit of a mixed night weather wise, only four club runners this time, were led home by John Stockdale, 24th overall, in a time of 44.51. Well done all who took part.

Club Races in June

Two Super Races both in the same week as the Bowdon 5.

June 8th, Boars Head.

June 12th Passing Clouds

One Secondary race, the Kinder Trog on June 26th.

English Championships

The Up the Nab course was always going to be a bit of a puzzle which is understandable as it covers some areas of private land. In the end it proved to be a testing course with three good climbs and a long fast descent to the finish. The Keswick boys I spoke to after the race all agreed it was a suitable challenge. From the start it seems like a long running climb for around one mile before the first descent. It was very impressive stuff to watch the leading men at speed. Simon Bailey managed to prevail in the men's race and in the ladies’ race, which started one hour earlier, Heidi Dent took line honours by a very good margin, quite a few of the top ladies having run in the Three Peaks race the week before. Altrincham were represented by Jeff Norman who finished in 217th place overall, and third in the M70 class, in the men's race and Ann-Marie Jones who finished 41st overall lady, and first LV60, in the ladies’ race. Well done both!

Fell Running

continued from previous page

Other Events

Fell Inter Counties, Moel Ellio

Thirty years on, we decided to visit Moel Eilio again. Last time I dropped out, cream crackered after the first climb, whilst a very energetic Monica Shone battled on. This time I did not even bother to consider signing on. It was the inter-counties fell race so one could naturally expect a very good turnout of top runners. We were not disappointed. The weather was glorious and for once you could see the whole complex of Tops, a truly magnificent view. Walking the course uphill along the lane from the start, I was approached by a couple of Kent runners, who wanted to know the course. "Do we run along there" his finger tracking the skyline north to south, and finishing on Snowdon. "Well nearly," I replied, "you don't go up there", Snowdon, "but you do climb that little beastie," pointing at Moel Cynghorion, "which is followed by a nasty descent, don't worry." Trying to be helpful, I suggested, "the course is well marked and you should be able to follow the pack. The race does not really start till you start the climb up Moel Cynghorion from Bwlch Maesgwm!" For those of you who know the course, by this time the runner is required to climb both Moel Eilio and then Foel Gron, a total of around 680m of climbing out of a total climb of 915m for the whole race. "Ok thanks," was the reply. "Do you mind if I ask where you train?" I enquired. "Surrey" was the reply. "Not along the banks of the Thames" I suggested, "Well, yes, basically." "Have a good run," and with that we parted. Imagine my surprise when descending to Bwlch Maesgwm, I was passed by the first and second runners in the race who had a very good lead over the rest of the field. The second runner turned out to be one of the very lads I had spoken to from Kent, Max Nicholls. On the descent of Moel Cynghorion the leading two runners Chris Smith and Max Nicholls, elected to follow a longer route and were passed by the eventual winner Ben Mounsey, and Simon Bailey who finished second. Max finished a very creditable fourth overall and first U23! Yorkshire, with a 1st, 5th and 12th won the Men's team race. Cumbria with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place won the Ladies’ team prize. Two ADAC runners took part. Ann-Marie Jones finished a very creditable 222nd overall and 142nd in the Ladies’ race in a time of 94.30 (four minutes down over her previous time from 1986). Pete Hill finished 266th and 146th in the Men's race with a time of 105.51. A good testing run and a very good day on the fells for those of us who jogged/walked the course, irrespective of your team representation or whether you counted.

Fell Relays

This year the UKA British Fell & Hill Relay Championships are to be held on Saturday 15th October at Luss village, along the banks of Loch Lomond and hosted by Westerlands Cross Country Club. I am pleased to advise that Neil Walker has kindly agreed to organise teams and hopes to raise both mens’ and ladies’ teams. So please put the date in your diary and let Neil know you are available.

North of England Track & Field League - Division 4W

Round 1 - Eccles - Saturday 7th May

from Mark Simpson

HARD WORK FOR STRONGER SENIOR TEAM

IN DIFFICULT NORTHERN LEAGUE OPENER

Not for the first time in recent history, eligibility issues reared their head as our Northern League team began its Division 4 West campaign at Eccles on 7th May in a highly competitive match featuring five strong and well-represented teams. However, I suspect the lost points would have made the battle for fourth place with Crewe & Nantwich a much closer one, but not changed the overall result. The demise of Warrington’s senior team left only 5 teams in the division, but clearly on this evidence 5 strong ones. Most impressive performance of the day was Salford Mets’ first place finish above Southport & Waterloo, no doubt helped by home advantage but still a considerable achievement. We fielded a much stronger team than we have for some time, with 13 athletes; if there was a problem it was that 11 of them were male, which limited our ability to gather points from the women’s events, even before eligibility issues arose.

Women

The women were severely handicapped by the illness of Alison Vesey and the aforementioned eligibility issues. In terms of return per event, Lora Blann excelled with victories in her two distance races, but huge praise should also be given to Steph Thompson for doing 6, often unfamiliar, events each and gathering a significant points haul for the team.

Men

Andy Norman led the way with 26 points from his 4 events, with victories in the A 1500m and 5000m his personal highlights, with another victory in the B high jump probably a less anticipated bonus. Team manager Peter Rice, assisted by Barry Chapman on the day in view of his heavy commitment to events, had done a good job of putting together a team, and did an equally good job in collecting 26 points from his 6 events, with second places in the A high jump and 400m hurdles and third place in the A javelin his personal highlights of the day. Jon Powell also did a sterling job, collecting 16 points from his 3 distance races (which included an unaccustomed 3000m steeplechase) while debutant 15 year old Peter Simpson had a really good day with 15 points from his 3 A events, including a great second place in his first ever triple jump competition, an event at which he looks a natural, and installed himself firmly in the national U17 top 100 with a leap of 11.49m, only beaten in the last round. Justin Thompson also returned a double figure score from his 4 events, whilst Mike Berks and Nick Bugler added much needed strength in depth to the distance running and sprinting respectively. Barry Chapman, Lee Martin and 15 year old Henry Thompson (both on debut) and Mark Simpson also chipped in valuable points from their events. And we fielded two relay teams, again the first time for 2 years. We should not be disheartened by this result in view of the strength of the opposition, and this was

much the strongest team we have fielded for a couple of years. A few more ladies would be helpful

for future events, but otherwise I am feeling cautiously optimistic about this season.

GOOD START FOR M60 NOMADS WITH FOURTH PLACE IN

FIRST UPPER AGE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE MEETING

An impressive turnout of eighteen athletes, mainly from Oldham & Royton and Rochdale, for the first Upper Age Youth Development League meeting of 2016 at Bury on Sunday 1st May led to a satisfactory fourth place, beating the hosts and only losing out to three very strong teams, leaving only the question of who our mysterious 1500m runners were! We are not currently blessed with lots of U17 and U20 athletes, but we did play our part with

Joe Fisher coming second in the U20 A javelin and Peter Simpson third in the U17 A long jump.

And our officials more than played their part by doing Hyndburn’s field duties as well as our own

(they had 1 athlete and 1 track judge), although sadly we don’t get their field judging points!

LARGE ATTENDANCE AND GOOD ALTRINCHAM

PERFORMANCES AT MAYDAY TRAFFORD OPEN

Our athletes produced 8 personal bests and 2 silver medals (and 2 more near-misses) at a massively well-attended Trafford open on Monday 2nd May. For example, John Snape and I processed 98 long jumpers in an unbroken session from 12.00 to 5.30, but all of the events were heavily subscribed, and thus extremely competitive. That being the case it is good to be able to report that Aisling McHale won a silver medal with a big personal best in the U11 long jump and Jade Buckley-Ratcliff justified her top 20 national ranking with a silver medal in the U13 discus, as well as just missing out on a medal with a personal best in the shot (she also ran a PB in the 75m, so altogether a good day’s work). Zak Martin took our other 4th place in the 80m hurdles, whilst our other 4 athletes each produced at

least 1 personal best. At this high level of competition medal-winning-performances are a bonus, and

this was another good performance from a very talented group of junior athletes.

NOSEBLEED TIME AS YOUTH DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE

TEAM WIN MATCH AND TOP TABLE FOR FIRST TIME

Prior to Sunday 22nd May 2016 we had never won a Youth Development League match nor been top of a Youth Development League table. I am delighted to say that thanks to the talent and hard work of the 25 athletes who represented us at Trafford on Sunday, we have now rectified both those omissions, having won the match by a highly impressive 177 points from previous leaders St Helens Sutton. Promotion should now hopefully be within our grasp, although we will be taking nothing for granted at this relatively early stage of proceedings. A good insight into the quality of the team’s performance is that all 25 members achieved at least one personal best, which is extraordinary, with 34 personal bests in events previously done and 20 in new events at competitive level. 14 athletes (more than half the team!) achieved personal bests in all of their individual events, which is possibly even more extraordinary.

Under 13 boys

We had 3 out of 4 debutants and all younger year athletes. The boys did brilliantly to collect 99 points and finish a close second to St Helens Sutton in this section. Although Joshua Wilson (a tremendous 28 points on debut, winning high jump and long jump) and Oskar Richardson (27 points, winning the shot and javelin for the second match running) took the headlines, that still leaves 44 points (including relay) attributable to our other debutants, Ben Lomas and Callum O’Reilly, who can also be very proud of their first YDL appearances.

Under 13 girls

The younger girls collected 122 points to beat St Helens Sutton by 8 points in this section. Event winners were Jade Buckley-Ratcliff (javelin & B high jump), Tessa Pearce (high jump), Matilda Kelly (shot), Nya Livingstone (B shot) and Katie Hewett (B 1200m and B 75m hurdles). Debutant Hannah Gregg and Riya Hodgson (after a very late night) also played their full part in a strong team performance.

Under 15 boys

The older boys were on great form, beating St Helens Sutton into second place by 35 points in this section. Jack Bradburn won the 100m (club record) and the long jump, while Oliver Lau won the javelin and discus and Zak Martin the 80m hurdles and hammer. The 4 x 300m relay team also won (in a club record time), while Harry Sinclair won the B long jump and debutant Harley Geraghty won the B 800m. Dan Edmundson impressed in the high jump (second place) and the relay, whilst Oliver Nicholson also picked up valuable points in his 3 events and relay.

Under 15 girls

The older girls did wonderfully well to beat a very strong Colwyn Bay squad by 12 points – this was the section in which St Helens Sutton were very weak, and so where most of the impressive winning margin came from. Millie Pearce won the 1500m in a great race and also the discus, Lucy Diss won the 100m and the B javelin, Emma Simpson won the javelin, Lucy Potter won the B 75m hurdles and B discus, Courteney Disley made a strong debut by winning the B long jump and coming second in the two B sprints and Maddie Lord won the B high jump. Isobel Miller came up against the full might of the Colwyn Bay squad in her events, but performed admirably to collect 22 hard won points, and another club record in the 300m. She then also played a key part in the success of the 4 x 300m relay team in winning their event (in another club record). So the next match at Warrington on Sunday 19th June (St Helens Sutton’s home match) promises to be a classic, provided we can field a team of at least equivalent strength and St Helens can strengthen their under 15 girls’ team given home advantage. It seems likely that we are the two teams who will contest the North West 4 title this year, so this is definitely one to look forward to. If readers wish to come to cheer on the team your support would be greatly appreciated. Finally a massive thank you to everyone who helped to organise a match which we hosted at less than 4 weeks’ notice, and particularly John Snape, who reacted with great equanimity when I told him I wanted to host this match and arranged it very efficiently. We have received very complimentary comments from the other clubs involved about the organisation of the event, which is a well-deserved tribute to John’s organisational abilities.

8 MORE ALTRINCHAM MEDALS AT GREATER MANCHESTER

& CHESHIRE TRACK & FIELD COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Nine of our athletes amassed eight medals (three of them gold) and 13 personal bests at the very well-attended Greater Manchester County Championships in Macclesfield on 14th& 15th May, as well as earning at least three, and possibly four, call-ups to the Greater Manchester team for the Inter Counties Championships in Hull in August.

Under 13

Jade Buckley-Ratcliff won the gold medal in discus with a 20m+ throw that established her in 13th place in the national rankings. Over in the Cheshire championships, Sabrina Bracken-Worsley made a debut against strong competition that confirmed her promise as a sprinter.

Under 15

The star turn here was Jack Bradburn, who won gold in the 200m and long jump and silver in the 100m to earn himself a triple Inter Counties invitation. Jack is now 42nd in the national rankings in the 100m. Also off to Hull will be Zak Martin after his silver medal in the 80m hurdles, while Harry Sinclair has a chance of an invitation after his bronze medal in the 800m. On the girls’ side, Courteney Disley (on her competitive debut for the club), Lucy Diss and Emma Simpson performed well against very stiff opposition, mustering three personal bests between them - all are younger year athletes whose time at this level may well come next year.

Under 17

Our third Hull-bound athlete is Peter Simpson, who won silver in the long jump (personal best) and triple jump (sadly there is no triple jump in the Inter Counties) and ran a season’s best in the 100m.

It is good to see our youngsters performing so strongly in events of this depth of quality, and congratulations to Jack, Zak and Peter on repeating their Inter Counties selection of 2015, with good luck to Harry with his possible selection.

Vicki Perry elected Life Member of Altrincham & District Athletic Club Ltd

from Carole Harrison

It was proposed at the last committee meeting that Vicki Perry should be offered honorary life membership of the club.

Over the years she has done a great deal for the club and has promoted ADAC not least by holding British marathon records, bringing much publicity to the club.

At London in 2009 she ran 2.53.15 to set a British FV50 Marathon record which is still second in the all time list and in 2013, again in London, her 3.03.45 set a British FV55 British Marathon record which still stands.

The proposal was unanimously approved. We were delighted that she accepted our offer, bestowed on only a few, and richly deserved!

This was her reply:

I am absolutely thrilled. What an honour! Thank so much to you all. I do really think of myself as an average jogger and feel totally unworthy. I would like to write formally to the club to thank them. Hope to see you soon. Now that I can wear a club vest again you’d better let me know if you ever need me in action, although very sadly I am getting slower and slower!

Love Vicki

ADAC MEMBERSHIP FEES & ENGLAND ATHLETICS AFFILIATION

There have been recent changes regarding compulsory athlete registration held under UKA Rules.

While athlete registration has been a part of the rules of the sport for a number of years these changes mean it is essential that athletes are registered and aware of their registration details. While road runners will still be able to compete unattached, athletes, who wish to represent their club (and claim the registered athlete discount on entry fees) in all events including road running, will need to be registered.

Club membership fees are now due. You will be registered with EA on receipt of your fees which include England Athletics registration fee of £13.

Club fees for 2016/17 are:

Adults £45 Junior and students in full time education £25 Senior citizens £25 Social members £20 Second claim £10 1 Adult & 1 Junior £65 1 Adult & 2 Juniors £85 1 Adult & 3 Juniors £105 2 Adults & 1 Junior £110 2 Adults & 2 Juniors £130 2 Adults & 3 Juniors £150

Preferred method of payment is online bank transfer; account number is 33466590 sort code20-01-96.
