G LO SSA RY
[ condensate ] Liquid hydrocarbons obtained from natural gas re c o v e red in conventional s u rface separators
in producing oil and gas fields. Includes liquid hydrocarbons condensed in natural gas pipelines.
[ contributions ] Include the hydrocarbon-extraction duty, the extraord i n a ry - h y d ro c a r b o n -
extraction duty, the additional duty on exports and the import duties. For the 2000 fiscal year, the
h y d rocarbon-extraction duty was 52.3% and the extraord i n a ry - h y d rocarbon-extraction duty was 25.5%;
they tax the value of crude oil and natural gas extraction calculated with the weighted average price of
c rude oil exported. The additional duty was 1.1% of the hydrocarbon extraction duty rate.
[ crude oil ] Excludes condensates and natural gas liquids production. The crude oil re c o v e red can
be light or heavy as follows:
h e avy crude oil. C rude oil with API density less or equal than 27°. Most of this oil is
p roduced in the Campeche Sound.
light crude oil. C rude oil with API density range from 27° to 38°. This type is produced in
the Campeche Sound and others areas in the country.
lighter crude oil. C rude oil with API density higher than 38°. This type of crude oil is
p roduced in the Mesozoic areas of the Southern Region
R e g a rding crude oil marketing, Mexico exports three varieties with the following typical characteristics:
[ maya ] Heavy crude oil, 22°API density and 3.3 weight % sulfur.
[ istmo ] Light crude oil, 33.6°API density and 1.3 weight % sulfur.
[ olmeca ] Ve ry light crude oil, 39.3°API density and 0.8 weight % sulfur.
[ drilling rigs in operation ] Average number of rigs daily engaged in drilling wells and
c o rresponding activities such as disassembling, transport, and maintenance.
[ domestic sales ]Invoiced sales by PEMEX to distributors and national customers throughout the country.
[ field (producing) ] Fields with producing wells, which include producing and water injection
wells in operation and productive wells temporarily shut-off .
[ petrochemical products ] A re those chemicals which are derived in whole or in part
f rom crude oil or natural gas. PEMEX produces 39 petrochemicals, nine are classified as basic
p e t rochemicals according to the government resolution published on November 13, 1996 in the
g o v e rnment´s official daily bulletin. Aditionally some products manufactured by PEMEX are not strictly
p e t rochemicals, nevertheless they are traditionally considered so since they are raw materials or by
p roducts of petrochemical plants. The following basic petrochemicals can be manufactured only by the
state through PEMEX or wholly-owned PEMEX´s subsidiaries.
1.- Ethane
2.- Propane
3.- Butanes
4.- Pentanes
5.- Hexane
6.- Heptane
7.- Carbon black
8.- Naphthas
9.- Methane, when it proceeds from hydrogen carbides originate in the re s e rvoirs located in national
t e rr i t o ry and is used as raw material in industrial petrochemical pro c e s s e s .

[ refining capacity ] Capacity per day in operation, not capacity per calendar day. The capacity
per day in operation refers to the maximum volume processed by a plant working without interru p t i o n s .
Capacity per calendar day includes the normal interruptions due to maintenance and other causes.
[ region ] Geographycal coverage assumed by Pemex Exploración y Producción for administrative division.
The headquarters are located along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico: Poza Rica, Ve r. (Nort h e rn Region),
Vi l l a h e rmosa, Tab. (Southern Region) and Ciudad del Carmen, Cam. (Nort h e a s t e rn Marine Region and
S o u t h w e s t e rn Marine Region).
[ assets ] Administrative branch into each region. Regarding the criteria of main assets,
administrative re s t ructuring into the regions was designed, so in 1998 the new division has seventeen
assets distributed as follows:
[ northeastern marine region ] C a n t a rell, Ku-Maloob-Zaap and Ek-Balam.
[ southwestern marine region ] Abkatún, Pol-Chuc and Litoral Ta b a s c o .
[ southern region ] Muspac, Samaria-Sitio Grande, Jujo-Tecominoacán, Luna, Chilapilla-José
Colomo, Bellota-Chinchorro and Cinco Pre s i d e n t e s .
[ northern region ]: Burgos, Ve r a c ruz, Poza Rica y Altamira.
[ san jose agreement ] In August 3, 1980 Mexico entered into an agreement with Ve n e z u e l a
to provide each one 80,000 barrels of crude oil daily and refined products to several Central America and
Caribbean countries under favourable sale conditions. In 2000, the agreement included eleven countries:
Costa Rica, Barbados, Belice, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica,
Nicaragua and Panama.
[ sdps ] In the 2000 fiscal year, only were monthly taxed the gasolines, diesel and natural gas for auto-
motive use with a taxing formula that mix international prices re f e rences, cost of distribution and other factors.
[ vat (net) ]. It is the diff e rence between the value added tax that PEMEX transfers to its customers
and the value added tax payed by PEMEX when it buys goods and serv i c e s .
[ wells ] A c c o rding to their function, wells are classified in exploratory, which include stratigraphic
test wells, and development, which include injection wells. According to the degree of completion, they
a re classified in wells drilled and wells completed.
[ wells drilled ] A re those whose ro t a ry drilling operation has been concluded and have
cemented casing, but the activities of completion still have not start e d .
[ wells completed ] Drilled wells whose total depth has been reached; casing has been ru n
and cemented and is ready to produce after being perforated contiguously to the producing zone; tubing
is run; and control and flow valves are installed at the wellhead.
[ notes ]
The totals may not add due to ro u n d i n g . Annual changes are on a weight basis.
. . . Negligible figure . - Z e ro value.
