Passing It On
(I Timothy 4:12; II Timothy 2:2)
II Timothy 2:1-2 “You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard
from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”
I Timothy 4:12 “Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in
love, in faith, in purity.”
It is a beautiful thing to witness the passing of faith from generation to generation. This morning we
are blessed to hear a message from Jacob Scott. It is not the first time he has shared a message here, and
will not be the last. It is worth thinking about, however, that when our younger people step into more public
roles we are witnessing the passing of our faith to another generation.
When we are gathered as the body of Christ, there is always more going on that what we see with
our eyes and hear with our ears. The body here at Pennyrile is alive and active. There are many Sundays dur-
ing the year when some of us are in other places serving or growing. Each week we gather here we can re-
mind each other of the things we do during the week that matter.
It is a blessing to hear the conversations before and after our worship time. They are about our chal-
lenges, they are about encouragement and comfort, about meaningful relationships, about the good works
this congregation is involved with, about solving problems and working together. It is not like this every-
where in our lives and we should remember that. Our children and grandchildren are among us and see us
as we talk and visit. And I believe that even though they do not always know what is being said (or need to),
they see that these are conversations that matter – from fishing and gardening to loss and struggle.
They sing with us, they witness the event of the Lord’s Supper, and they pray with us. All of this has
the effect of forming what they will become as God’s men and women. Your presence is important here, and
your children’s presence is important. It is worth the effort and planning that it takes to get a family here.
There is no other place where we can be around such a variety of people who love and care about us and
our families. It is a strength of our congregation.
So we will all share this morning in witnessing part of the process of faith passing to the next genera-
tion. But never forget that this happens every time the church gathers. Let us all continue to encourage,
guide, and strengthen our children in the things that matter most. Our priorities will be their priorities.
Please pray for the group in Honduras.
Thank you for worshipping with us today!
