Moses said, "See, I have set before you this day life and good, death and evil. If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you this day, by loving the LORD your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his ordinances, then you shall live and multiply, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land which you are entering to take possession of it. But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, I declare to you this day, that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land which you are going over the Jordan to enter and possess. THE EPISTLEA Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to Philemon

Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our beloved fellow worker and Ap'phia our sister and Archip'pus our fellow soldier, and the church in your house: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers, because I hear of your love and of the faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and all the saints, and I pray that the sharing of your faith may promote the knowledge of all the good that is ours in Christ. For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you. Accordingly, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do what is required, yet for love's sake I prefer to appeal to you -- I, Paul, an ambassador and now a prisoner also for Christ Jesus -- I appeal to you for my child, Ones'imus, whose father I have become in my imprisonment. THE HOLY GOSPEL: Luke 14: 25-33Gospeller: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to LukeGlory to Christ our Saviour.At that time great multitudes accompanied Jesus; and he turned and said to them, "If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?   Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him,   saying, `This man began to build, and was not able to finish.'  Or what king, going to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an embassy and asks terms of peace.   So therefore, whoever of you does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple. Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ.ALL: Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s NotebookGreetings:

It is really to humanity’s shame that we have not yet learnt the art of living in peace. We have not yet learnt what it means to “love thy neighbour”.

In both biblical texts and in our hymn texts that elusive peace that must exist among us is sought.

The prophets of the 8th century BC all looked forward to the time when people would be treated

with dignity and there would be no need for the horror of war and the collateral damage that is the natural off shoot of war .

He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. (Isaiah 2:4 cf Micah 4:3)

Lewis Hensley (1824-1905 the author of the hymn 53 CPWI Hymnal, asks the question When comes the promised time when war shall be no more, and lust, oppression, crime shall flee they face before?

The hymn “O God of love, O King of peace" has not been included in the above mentioned hymnal; nevertheless its words by W. H. Baker remain pertinent for our time.

O God of love, O King of Peace, Make wars throughout the world to cease; The wrath of sinful men restrain, Give peace, O God, give peace again!

There are yet times when leaders of various countries in the world behave as though they are a law unto themselves and would go to any lengths to maintain power.

At times they use whatever dangerous weapons that are at their disposal and right thinking persons hold the view that such behaviour will wreak havoc not only in that individual nation; but that many more human beings, animals and plants too can be damaged and so the opportunity to do such biological harm must be prevented.

Interestingly, the Just-War Theory has its origins in Christian theology. Saint Augustine is identified as the first person to offer a theory on war and justice. The great Saint referred to the Bible and regarded some wars as necessary to amend an evil.

Saint Thomas Aquinas revised Augustine's version, creating three criteria for a just war: 1. the war needed to be waged by a legitimate

authority, 2. have a just cause, and 3. have the right intentions.

On Thursday September 5, 2013 Pope Francis has sent a message to the president of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, who will preside over the forthcoming meeting of the G20 group representing the world's largest economies.

In that missive His Holiness expressed the hope that these leaders not forget the situation in the Middle East and particularly in Syria.

We continue to pray for the situation in that country with the senseless massacre unfolding before the eyes of the world. We pray that a solution may be found, that humanitarian assistance may be given and that peace and good will may be pursued.

FOOTBALL RESULTSThe St. David’s Football Team kicked their way victoriously through the semi-finals and the finals last weekend and brought the trophy to the St. David’s Church. They have been hailed as one of the most disciplined teams in the tournament and we are proud of their performance. Well done lads! Thank to the management team and Edley Malcolm the Coach.
